I'm probably going to order both ways. One from Rivendell to get a real dead tree copy, and from Amazon to hopefully tick the ranking up. Re: [RBW] Re: Fork rake radius
I would think that a continuous curve would be better looking but also more expensive and considering how aggressively this frame is priced, it's hard to fault it. Anyway, I considered buying one for my wife, since I think it's a beautiful bike and I think she would probably prefer a step through frame. But she says she is pretty happy with her early '80s Sequoia and also saw the Betty as more of an urban bike, which doesn't describe Westford, Vt, a town of 2,000 souls. Definitely going to get a copy of the book. I can't stomach V8 but I see lots of folks drinking it on brevets. It supposedly works great for keeping cramps at bay. [RBW] Wooden fenders, QB and SO
William: I'll take you up on the Toshi cloth tape offer. Let me know what I owe you. Re fender-wringing, the flat wooden fenders are very easy to install (a plus), have essentially unlimited flex fore and aft (making them ideal for tire removal on bikes with rear-facing drops like the QB and the SO) and often very attractive -- the ones on my Quickbeam (birds eye maple with some kind of wood inlays that match the frame color perfectly) are to my eye really pretty. Pic here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/37542512@N04/4411489919/in/set-72157623567913352 Functionally, they're not as good as normal fenders, although interestingly, using Riv flaps, especially on the front, helped A LOT. I can now ride happily with them through a drizzle and even a steady rain, but in anything I would characterize as a heavy rain, water begins to bleed out the edges. I'm really interested to see if the compound curve fenders I put on the SimpleOne will improve the performance; it seems like they should. Although I think they're even more attractive than the flat ones (of course, they're more expensive, too), they're much more difficult to install (virtually no flex, unlike the flat ones), and almost require additional firm attachment points. (I bolted the front of the front fender to the underside of the Nitto Mini Front Rack, pic here http://www.flickr.com/photos/37542512@N04/4411489919/in/set-72157623567913352 and the SimpleOne brake bridge is tapped for a fender mount, so the rear is bolted there, too, in addition to the two sets of stays and the kickstand plate mount.) OTOH, once installed, they are rock solid and VERY sturdy. On this list, "reply" goes to everyone, and while I've had years to adjust to that, I still sometimes reflexively make the accidental reply that goes to the whole list (subconsciously thinking that hitting the reply button will only go to the OP.) Because of this, I cut some slack to the people who reply on FS items to the whole list. [RBW] Re: Not So Quick Beam
I just wanted to close out this mystery and thank you all for the tips. I'm pretty sure what I was experiencing was a combination of factors, in no particular order: 1) The chain was definitely too tight. Proper, looser tension helps, more so while pedaling than coasting. The WI freewheel still appears to have a good deal more drag than the Shimano, on the stand, but after swapping them back and forth a few times I can't say it's really noticeable on the road. 2) The tires were a biggie. Replacing the JB's with the Kojaks made a big difference. Upon removing the JB's I was very surprised how stiff the carcass is. Much more so than my wire-bead 35mm TG Paselas, and no comparison at all with a Kojak or folding Pasela. I have folding TG Paselas on the bike at the moment and even they feel much better than the JB's (despite the widespread derision of the TG, I've been quite happy with TG Paselas in the past, especially the folding version) 3) Riding position - it's clear that the upright position of the Alba bars is not doing me any favors aerodynamically or biomechanically. As I'm planning to use my QB as a town bike for now, I'm happy to live with this and just relax and be slower, now that it doesn't feel so much like the bike is actually fighting me. I lowered the bars a bit, and taped the front curves, too. I find the hand positions there are very comfortable and more powerful - great for climbing and headwinds. My last few days of riding on the 'Beam have been more enjoyable and I feel like the bike is displaying more of its true character. -Pete in CT SingleSixtySidepullSam... and QuickerBeam -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "RBW Owners Bunch" group. [RBW] Re: East Coast Rivendells / BOBs
I lock my bike outside almost every day around Manhattan and Brooklyn. This is my deal: I use one of those ridiculously heavy kryptonite chain locks (I tell myself it'll just make me faster on weekend rides when I leave it home). At work (usually the only place I lock my bike outside for more than an hour or so) the bike rack can't be seen from the sidewalk and is within view of a security guard. Last year a bmx bike sat on the rack for 3 or 4 months without a lock. My Quickbeam is really beat up so it definitely doesn't look fancy. Ultimately, I don't think Riv's stand out to bike thieves and I keep mine locked up well enough that there's probably an easier bike to steal nearby. I had Pitlocks on the stock wheels, but they're finished (the rear exploded when it wore hour and the front got trashed when a car hit me a few weeks ago). Now I'm using bolt-on wheels and I'm not too worried about the front getting stolen (I lock the rear). My Brooks saddle is around 7 years old and has a ratty-looking cover. Definitely say hi! I shouldn't be such a cranky-pants hard-ass, eh? The root of the problem is obviously with Google's poor user interface... any decent email application should offer a "reply to sender" option, in addition to the default reply-to address. [RBW] Grant, in (or soon to be) in print.
Thanks for the links. I pre ordered the kindle version too, (clicked through the link on Kent's site, so hopefully Kent gets a nickel!) and will pick up the paper version from RBW when available. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "RBW Owners Bunch" group. [RBW] Re: Blue Sox are here
I too went with the EA blue sock option. They were a little too roomy right out of the box (length fit perfect... guess my feet are skinny). I washed/dried them this morning to shrink them a bit. They fit fine now. I also picked up a pair of the dotty gloves and half-mitts. Today was too warm for the dotty gloves but the half-mitts are awesome... wish I'd bought them earlier in the winter. easy on/off, they hang on the wrist via elastic, quick free fingers for camera usage. highly recommended. --Smitty -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "RBW Owners Bunch" group. hehehe, I was right! tires are an answer, if not *the *answer. A good reason to have many bikes is to ride in different natural positions and for different natural reasons. [RBW] Re: Grant, in (or soon to be) in print.
Welll...thank you all for being supportive. I am expecting the mainstream "community" or whatever to pan the book. I didn't set out to fling arrows, just to promote another approach---which I imagine most of all of you already know of and to varying degrees are already practicingnot because it's mine or I say it's good, but because it works for you. The thing is, we are living in a bubble which understands the benefits of, say, a little more tire volume and a little less pressure, or having room to mount fenders, or being able to raise handlebars by loosening the stem bolt. Nobody here boasts about sub-6hour centuries, or that kind of stuff. It's more...hey, let's meet up here and then and have good time riding together. These aren't original ideas, and I'm not the leader of 'em, and RIVforum riders aren't the only ones who ride this way...BUT it is not the face of bicycle riding that gets presented and glorified and espoused to the innocent adult who goes into a typical (not Hiawathaesque) bike shop and wants to buy a bike and start riding it. If that guy (or woman) has money and misplaced faith in the salesperson, s/he's going to get on a bike looking kind of like a former pro racer gone to seed. So most of the book suggests alternatives to this or that, and there's a bit of good/bad in it. I also gotta say that I hope when a viewpoint is expressed thaterrr...you don't agree with, that you'll just write "bullsh*t!" on that page and turn to something that makes sense for you. The likelihood that anybody reading this will agree with it all is slim (and the prospect, scary!) Anyway, racers won't like it, and so...your support here means a lot to me. I don't assume that support...I mean, I like what I'm reading now, for sure, but don't hold me to too high-a standard! G On Feb 21, 2:52 pm, "C.J. [RBW] Re: Grant, in (or soon to be) in print.
It would be really neat if RBW offered GP-autographed copies for a buck or two extra (assuming the publisher allows that sort of thing). I'd gladly pay the upcharge and I'll even shellac my twine bookmark to go with it. If I were to get a Kindle to use to read it I'm afraid that would be the slippery slope whereby I would sell my Sam Hillborne, my Saluki, and my beloved XO-3 to buy another modern plastic device like a Trekalized bike. Besides that, I wouldn't be able to write "bullsh*t!" on the pages I don't like, although I seriously doubt I'd be inspired to do that. Hey, even three bucks would be OK by me. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "RBW Owners Bunch" group. Paper copies will also make nice gifts, especially for someone who's interested in bicycling but may be put off by the otherworldly look of the current mainstream. dougP On Feb 22, 7:44 pm, Bill wrote: > It would be really neat if RBW offered GP-autographed copies for a buck or > two extra (assuming the publisher allows that sort of thing). [RBW] Two more items For Sale: Nitto Tech Deluxe and Loyal Designs Handlebar bag
Nitto Technomic Deluxe 12cm. 26.0mm clamp. I bought it new from Rivendell, but guessed wrong on length and bought an 11cm a week later. Used for about 200 miles on my too-small road bike, which is now getting parted out. Looks practically new. You'd have to look hard for even an insertion line. $43 shipped http://www.flickr.com/photos/45758191@N04/6776402730/in/photostream http://www.flickr.com/photos/45758191@N04/6922518037/in/photostream http://www.flickr.com/photos/45758191@N04/6776403480/in/photostream And a Loyal Designs handlebar bag. Loyal Designs is a one man show in Berkeley, my old friend Phil. I bought two bags from him, have used one extensively and can't live without it. Since then his bags have been favorably reviewed in Bicycle Quarterly. This one is completely unused. I'm selling this one because I think I want to get Phil to make me another one that's a bit taller. It's Maroon, and has a prototype Rene Herse logo on it. Phil made it as a prototype to see if Boulder Bikes would be interested in carrying them. Phil gave me a deal and I'll pass the deal on. $125 shipped, or less than half the price of a similarly sized Berthoud bag. 220mm tall. 150mm deep. 270mm wide. Lots of photos in my flickr: http://www.flickr.com/photos/45758191@N04/6776402560/in/photostream I also have a 42cm 3TTT morphe handlebar. I see people asking super high prices for this on ebay, so I'm tempted to clean it up and try the free market, but if you are interested in saving me a bunch of time, I'd sell these for $50 shipped. I'll take photos if you are interested. Please contact me off list with "Reply to Author" :) -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "RBW Owners Bunch" group.
