[RBW] Bicycle Quarterly Charity Drive

2011-12-07 Thread Jan Heine
We did our first charity drive in 2004 after the terrible Tsunami in
the Indian Ocean. Today, there is just as much need in the world. One
of the ways Bicycle Quarterly Press has chosen to make a difference is
our charity drive.

Until midnight, December 8, 2011, we will give 50% of the purchase
price of each Bicycle Quarterly subscription and renewal, as well as
of our book "The Competition Bicycle," to charities that help make the
world a better place. See our blog for more information at

http://janheine.wordpress.com/

Thank you.

I don't know how summery it will be. It's currently 34 degrees (Fahrenheit)
and sunny in the Creek, though the high is supposed to be 59. I'd pack an
extra layer for riding if I were you. Keep us updated on when you want to
ride. There is likely to be at least one member around to ride with if you
want a local guide.

[RBW] Re: Odd New Bike (HS)

2011-12-07 Thread Thomas Skean
I tried Shimano IGHs a few years ago. Went through three of them in <2,000
miles. At first I thought it was my weight; that they simply weren't made to
operate under the torques induced by a 275lb (at the time) person. It might
also have been the gritty nature of the paths I rode. But the last hub, which
lasted more than 1,000 miles, would not shift much at all when it was 20
degrees or colder. That was the final nail; I ride year round and park outside
in the Chicago area. A shifting system that literally froze just didn't work
for me.

[RBW] Replacement "buckle" for Country Bag

Long shot, but this is an innovative group, so figured I'd ask.
Looking for a replacement "buckle" that is used to secure the side
pockets on a Nigel Symthe country bag. This is the piece of leather
that has a hole to attach to a post on the pocket flap and a strap
portion with holes that attaches to the pocket.

Probably have to have one custom made...would also be interested to
hear if anyone know of someone who can do such work and is willing to
accept small jobs.

That may well be your religion, but it is not a universal Truth.

All welded joints are not equally beautiful: I've seen plenty of
perfectly satisfactory weld joints that looked as though they were
caulked with dog feces smeared on with a popsicle stick.

What's more, paint has but one functional purpose, to protect the
underlying surface from the elements. Unattractive colors, blobs,
orange peel, all serve the function equally well, but it is absurd to
claim they are all equally beautiful because of that.

West to Pleasant Valley Road (beautiful road), then across the grade and
back via Dixon is a nice ride, and not too hard if you want to take it
easy.

Another option would be to ride East to Sac and take the American River
bike trail up to Folsom, loop around lake Natoma and then head back on the
AR trail, but that has a lot of duplication [same trail out and back] and
is probably closer to 90 miles.

North and South are both ugly and boring IMO...

[RBW] FS pair of 700x50 Marathon XR tires folding

2011-12-07 Thread William
In my attempt to balloonize my Hillborne I bought a set of 4 Marathon XRs
on Ebay. Turns out they were just a hair too wide in front, and rubbed on
the fork crown. That, combined with a temporary cashflow issue, led me to
hatch a plan: Sell the Hillborne now, and save up for an Atlantis later,
that will take these tires.

Well, the Atlantis idea is still there on the horizon, but the horizon is
far. It's not even next on my bike acquisition plan list. So I sold a set
of these tires to another group member, and I'm now offering up the other
set to the group. $50 shipped for a pair of Marathon XRs. 700x50, and
they measured a legit 49mm on Bontrager Fairlane rims.

Pics of the tires. They are used, but have a TON of material left on them.
Reflective sidewall strip, too. Let me know if you want a grip of 29er
tubes in the box with the tires.

[RBW] Re: Odd New Bike: Built, Explained

2011-12-07 Thread grant
They're not "tentacle" stays...they're "tentacular" ! Good name.
Now, if I could only come up with a theory to explain the asymmetry.

The truth is, when I sent my drawing to Taiwan (yes, this may be a
production bike at some distant point), I sent symmetrical stays, more
like the one of the drive side. When I got back their interpretation,
they were asymmetrical, like you see here. My first reaction was
exactly what anybody's would have been: "What'sit? Why? Who said to do
that? It's not what I'd expect--that kind of loosey goosey
creativity---from a do-as-you're-told Taiwanese CAD dude." THen, about
five seconds later, I loved it, welcomed it, and that was it.

They have to have an effect, and the effect has to be a slight
stiffening or reinforcing. They can't NOT do that. The task is simple
and I like how they look, and so Tapebubba is kind of right.

HS: Early on, I was thinking of this as a super slack bike. A slacker
bike. A Slackeur...and in keeping with the primate names lately, I
thought OK, Henri Slackeur..or Henriettta Slackeuse, for the fairer
sex there. But it seemed like too much of a joke on the American fad
of Frenchifying everything...not that we've never done that, but the
door is shut on it for now, at least.

The current working model name is Abner Thorp...but I think that may
be too harsh for some, so it's far from final. It could be Rosco
Bubbe, even tho that was going to be for the kid's bike that probably
won't happen. I do like that name a lot. Right now I'm not thinking
much about the name (and please no suggestions, so I don't feel
horrible for not taking them, if I don't). I figure anybody who can
handle the curvey T-stays and the overall idea of the bike can also
handle a slightly out-of-bounds name, but it won't be H. Slackeur/
Slackeuse.

SIze on a production model, if it happens, will be 50.7, 54.3, 58.7,
61.7. The smally will have 650B. The two bigs, 700c. The 54.3 I got
has 700c, but final may be 650B. The 650B Bettys we have a really boss-
riding bikes, and Dave here is rooting for it. I don't know yet.

[RBW] Re: Odd New Bike: Built, Explained

2011-12-07 Thread dougP
A couple of us speculators suggested the stays were intended to
counteract torsional forces in the rear triangle caused by the drive
being on one side. Seems like as good a story as any, and they look
pretty interesting as well. They are a bit muted with the bike built
up. A front basket would be a nice complement to the overall look.

[RBW] Re: Odd New Bike: Built, Explained

2011-12-07 Thread Joe Bernard
"Tentacular". That's funny. ;-)

I'd still like to see the Slacker bike. I have an Electra Amsterdam that
fits that criteria, and has a bar similar to the NuBar, but without as much
back-reach. The bike's seattube angle falls somewhere between "normal", and
the very-crank-forward Townies Electra builds. I sit bolt-upright on a big
ole sprung saddle. A recumbent couldn't be any more comfortable. A
production Rivendell Slacker with NuBar would be very cool. If you ever
want to ride my Amsterdam, gimme a holler.

[RBW] Re: Odd New Bike: Built, Explained

2011-12-07 Thread EricP
Guess this means we can start talking about "tentacular fortitude"?

Have to admit having a bike like Grant's idea a few years ago. It was
a Cross Check that was too big for me. Ended up using an Albatross
bar just to be able to ride it. God ride, but ended up being
impractical in winter in Minnesota. Not enough weight up front to
help control the bike.

[RBW] Conzelman Road Redux

2011-12-07 Thread Ray
After experiencing that rim failure last Sunday, I switched out the
wheels on my Gomez with some relatively new Salsa wheels I had on
another bike. I have ordered a new set of wheels from Rich Lesnik, but
these will do until those arrive. After work this afternoon, I rode
the usual loop back into the Headlands. I took a few pix, too:

[RBW] GP Quote in Adventure Cycling Bike Bits Newsletter

2011-12-07 Thread Robert F. Harrison
I just noticed that the latest Bike Bits Newsletter (Vol 13, No 23) for Dec
7 starts off with a quote from Grant:

"A big lie is that frame material is the most important factor in
determining how a bike rides. That's not true. Frame design is most
important. You can get almost any material to do anything."
-Grant Petersen, founder of Rivendell Bicycle Works

I couldn't find that on the website (doesn't mean it's not there) so I'm
wondering where it came from...anyone know/remember?

Aloha,

Bob

[RBW] Re: Going Going, Back Back, To Cali Cali :: Visiting the Bay Area!

2011-12-07 Thread Amit Singh
I'm ready to ride anytime, Holy Moses, am I ready.

Monday sounds like a plan. But so does Sunday, Tuesday, Wednesday and
Thursday.

Friday through Sunday I'm committed to birthday parties and
snowboarding in Tahoe.

I'd really like to see the hills, ride up above the clouds, shoot some
photos, eat some good food and do some bicycle camping. Since this is
my first time riding in the Bay Area, I'm totally open. A grand 'ol
tour to explore would be cool, but so would cherry picking a few
favorite rides and spots.

Thanks y'all for the warm welcome. I'll look forward to seeing -- and
riding, eating, drinking and celebrating with those who can can soon.

I'm So Excited! A!
