Having bikes and parts that make it easy to convert to upright bars. : )

Meanwhile, coining the word "outshrink" - that and the recent ziptie inventor
remark - Beth is just on fire!

Re: [RBW] Can you outgrow a frame?

2010-12-30 Thread Ken Freeman
If your question implies the question "Can one's body effectively shrink due
to aging?" my answer is, yes, absolutely. I may be seeing this myself, and
I certainly saw it in my dad as he aged. The lamina between spinal bones
compress over time, and this alone results in a height reduction even in fit
people.

I'm not sure I'd trust the height/weight measurements done at some doctors'
offices. The assistants at my GPs office aren't consistent about me having
shoes on, for example. The doctor may be skilled at "taking it with a grain
of salt," but still, the raw numbers are no longer good.

How about your flexibility - have you had it tested, or do you have a
baseline to compare to? I've found even in my '50s it can improve with
stretching.

IF the Simple One has the same geometry as the Quickbeam...

I have a PBH of 86.5, am 6' 0.5" tall, and have long arms. I have both a
60cm Quickbeam (with a 90mm stem and drops) and a 60cm Surly Crosscheck

[RBW] Re: Can you outgrow a frame?

2010-12-30 Thread Angus
Beth,

I'm 6 foot and middle aged, don't know that I have shrunk much, but
things have changed.

I was on a ride with the local bike club, riding next to a 20 year old
LBS mechanic (riding a Surly Steamroller with very low drop bars) and
middle aged lady. The young man and I were chatting about handle bars
and he asked why my bars were so high..."Low bars make my back
ache."..."But my back doesn't ache."..."Yes, but you're 20." Mechanic
looks confusedmiddle aged lady starts to laugh.

In the mid to late 90s I was fine on a 59.5cm Road Standard, now I'm
fine on a 64cm Rambouillet. Touring bike was a 59cm All Rounder, now
a 64cm Atlantis.

I took my 59cm All-Rounder and converted it to Albatross bars (RBW
made me a 14 or 15cm lugged stem to get the bars in the right place).
I ride that bike after I have done something stupid and have a back
ache. I can ride forever on that bike...my "bad back" bike.

Low bars...I'm "beyond that" now :-)

I would call and ask Rivendell

I have an 89cm PBH and ride 64cm frames with short stems (80-100mm).
We are all different, I'm sure Grant and his crew have a lot more
experience fitting people to their bikes than I do.

2010-12-30 Thread MichaelH

I assume you already know that raising the bars also brings them
closer to you as well as relieving strain on the wrists, arms, neck
and back. I would also strongly recommend regular yoga routine. You
can't stop the aging process but you can both slow it down and
ameliorate its impact. Besides increasing your flexibility the yoga
will heighten your body awareness, which will make the rest of your
needs easier to perceive and respond to.
enjoy the ride.

If you're comfortable on a 58cm long haul trucker then you'd probably
find a similar fit on the Rivendell, since they both have a slight
rise to the TT and 2cm HT extension AFAIK.

I'm 6' tall with about 89cm pbh and ride a 64cm quickbeam:

[RBW] Re: Can you outgrow a frame?

2010-12-30 Thread newenglandbike
Beth,

Don't think of it as out-growing the frame so much as out-growing a
particular setup on that frame.Angus makes a good point about just
keeping albatross or porteur or some other kind of upright, low-reach
bar on the bike. Typically you need a frame with a longer TT to
run those bars anyway-- because in most cases the reach of the bar is
actually negative (the bars put your hands behind the steering
axis).

Anyway I hope you find the comfort sweet-spot on it. I'm sure that
you & that bike have been through a lot over 12 years.

[RBW] Re: Fenders for Roadeo

Sounds like the fender nut option is a good one but if you are running
700x28c tires you could also do the Planet bike SpeedEZ fenders, I had
a pair on a Cannondale and they go on pretty easy and not messing with
brakes

[RBW] Re: New Simple one

2010-12-30 Thread Michael_S
Of course as Angus said ... call Rivendell. But it's not all PBH.

Other variables I would mention, pedal and shoe choices, crank arm
length, seatpost setback and saddle position also factor in.
While I'm almost as tall as those who've chimed in at 5"11 1/2" I only
use a SH of 73cm with a PBH of 85. I have a longer torso and arms so
on my 58 Ram I have my B17 all the way back on a 30mm setback
seatpost. I also use a Ritchey SPD pedals which have closer cleat to
axle height and use 175 crank arms. If I used a quill pedal, flat
shoes, middle saddle position and 170 arms I would be ~1 1/2 cm
higher. I also run a 11cm stem with my Noodles. Bottom line... it's
way more complex than PBH or Saddle height.

I went with Rapid Rise when I built up my Sam this summer. The nifty
thing about RR is how intuitive it is with bar-end shifters: pull up
to shift up, push down to shift down. My other bike is getting the

[RBW] Re: A couple of grainy Sam photos.

2010-12-30 Thread Will
Great photos. Thanks for posting. Arizona looks really good from this
snowbound point-of-view! Nice Sam H. Is that a 60cm with Pletscher
mouse trap rack on the front? I only ask because it looks almost level
and I didn't think that was possible using the Sam fork braze-ons. I
have one of those racks on the way but wasn't considering putting it
on the front for that reason. I'm not interested in using clamps on a
fork that has rack braze-ons. Just figured I would mount it on the
back. But that looks close enough to level for me! Maybe I will try it
after seeing yours. I have a 60 Sam but with a single tt. I love it
but enjoy how well your frame pump fits in there.

Hi Y'all,

Stopped by Riv today to place My deposit on my Simpleone. The Green in
Person is definitely a dark and slimey green. Really nice color in
person. I would compare it to the original Quickbeam green but a bit
darker and definitely has that slimey glisten to it. I think with the
cream accents it will definitely be a winner. Looking forward to the
arrival in April. It's going to be a Long 4 months.

Thanks Dustin.

How does it compare to the green on the RB-1?

I just saw the listing on the Riv website and they have a color
sample, hard to visualize on monitor though.

I have most of the parts now as I just found a NOS Mavic MA3 rim with
Miche Primato hub in 36 spokes on EBAY for a steal.

Looks good Bill.
I know you like black bike stuff, but the Salsa crossing guard comes

I was wondering if the XC Pro rear dérailleur would handle a 32t cog
since it say's max 28T on it. I've run it with a 30T and it worked
just fine.. now I know.
My Ram has XC Pro dérailleurs and hubs BTW.

[RBW] Re: Hillborne converted to Compact Double

2010-12-30 Thread MichaelH
I think you will really like this set up. I converted my Rambouillet
to a White Ind VCB double with a 44/30 and 11-28 9 speed cassette and
have really liked it. Front shifting is much more predictable and
with an 11 tooth cog the smaller rings eliminate the nee for a triple.

Happy New Year

[RBW] Re: zipties in snow / was: Seattle Snow Commute

2010-12-30 Thread Montclair BobbyB
I don't know; I haven't flatted yet (knock wood).

But as long as I have a 15mm wrench and a flat-bladed screwdriver, the
rest is minor. On the front, you gently disconnect the dyno wire
(screwdriver helps), compress the (drum) brake caliper and pop the
cable off (again screwdriver can help pry off a tightly fitting
cable); on the rear, same for the brake cable, and disconnecting the
gear cable is a cinch. The non-turn washers can sometimes be
stubborn, but the screwdriver (aka "the convincer") takes care of
that. I'll take a wild guess that it may add an additional minute or
two to each wheel when removing, and the same when connecting. Well
worth the extra effort, though.

Peace,
BB

[RBW] Re: Hillborne converted to Compact Double

2010-12-30 Thread William
Now for a few of the back story pieces

1. Front and rear derailers I bought here on the list. The worst
thing about them was that the jockeys were pretty toast, but I had on
hand a pair of NOS Suntour sealed bearing pulleys. Perfect for
friction shifting.
2. Crankset and BB came off a buddy's bike. He bought a SRAM Red
group for his bike, and paid me to do the build for him with a Riv
Gift Cert. Those dollars went to my Bombadil this summer. 172.5mm
arms are always good with me. No way was I going to use it as a
52/42/30. I might make the small ring a 26, or even a 24. This move
liberates my Ritchey 94/58 triple, as a spare or another project. It
also liberates a Campy triple front der.
3. I posted a WTB post for this chainguard. Turned out I found it at
my LBS, and they gave me a decent deal on it.
4. I had been assembling this drivetrain as a possible kit for an
80's road bike build. This move keeps the headcount in the stable at
a marriage-preserving 4.
5. This also liberates an XT mega 9 SGS rear derailler which can go
on the tandem, along with a 12-36 cogset. Mega.
6. I also have put a more substantial rear rack on for my next round
of Shimmy tests.
7. I'm considering moving this bike into full-commuter status with an
Albatross setup.

[RBW] Re: Hillborne converted to Compact Double

2010-12-30 Thread William
8. A common commuting gripe I had was that the big ring grabbed hold
of several shoelaces. Now with the guard setup I expect to be
liberated from having to remember to tuck those laces in. Or maybe I
should be wearing 'splats rain or shine?

Re: [RBW] RR 31

2010-12-30 Thread Bill Gibson
Did you know the pdf author was Milhouse Vanhouten? Cali is a mythical
place, you know...I have it, but I bought the pdfs from Rivendell...I
hesitate to violate copyright , but I will quote, assuming you are a loyal
customer..."Experiments With Rake & Trail"
Fork rake is how much the front wheel is offset from
the steering axis—a straight line through the center of
the head tube. The aspect of the bike’s steering geometry
that’s affected by fork rake is called trail. Don’t confuse
it with a trail you ride on.
Road bikes typically have between 2-inches (50.6mm)
and 2 1/2-inches (63.5mm) of trail, and bike journalists
who’ve written about trail have said 2 1/4-inches
(57/58mm) of trail makes a bike not too quick, not too
slow, just right.
Trail theory says that more trail makes a bike easier to
control at high speeds and over rough ground.
Mountain bikes typically have between 2 3/4-inches
(69.8mm) and three inches 76.2mm) of trail.
Less trail, according to theory, makes a bike easier to
control at slow speeds, but harder to control when
you’re going fast, hitting bumps, or both.
Trail is affected by: (1) the wheel radius; (2) the head
tube angle; and (3) the fork rake (offset). There are three
ways to increase trail:
• Bigger front wheel.
• Shallower head tube angle.
• Less fork rake. Most folks who start thinking about
trail temporarily get confused at least three times, and
think more rake makes more trail. Nupe.
To calculate trail using arithmetic:
Trail = Wheel radius/Tan. of head tube angle minus
fork offset/Sin. of head tube angle.
If that’s Greek to you, we should be in the same club. I
have it programmed on my computer here, so I just
plug in the numbers and there you go…

How Trail Affects Our Frame Designs
When I design a Rivendell, I find the typical tire the rider
will ride, and then the biggest. For all-purpose road riding,
I shoot for 60-61mm of trail with the most common
tire. That’s more than what “experts have said” results in
neutral handling, but they are not the boss of me. Nor
should they be of you!
Then I see what the trail is with the largest tire. Normally
a customer will say, “I’ll ride a 700x28 most of the time,
but there are some fire roads here,
and I’ll ride 700x35s when I go
there.” Well, that works out just
fine, because the bigger tire will
increase the trail, making the bike
better for the fire road (so goes trail
theory).
Most frame designers have a trail
figure they’re comfortable with,
depending on the bike’s intended
purpose. But some copy other manufacturer’s
geometries—not a bad
thing to do, and I hope we haven’t
reached the point where somebody
out there considers Xmm of trail to
be intellectual property. Finally,
some builders just know from experience
what works, and don’t think about trail. That’s
fine, too!
In Italy in the ‘80s it was common for the top makers to
put 45mm of rake on each fork, regardless of the
frame’s head tube angle. The big bikes, which almost
always had steeper head tubes, didn’t have much trail,
but the little bikes (with slacker head tubes) had more
than plenty. I wouldn’t say that’s all that fine; in fact it
seems odd to me. But these same Italian frames were
ridden to many prestigious victories, which will impress
those in the “results speak for themselves” camp. I’m in
the “trail doesn’t win races” camp.
When you first learn about trail, you may find yourself
getting obsessed. It happened to me and I’ve seen it happen
to others. Trail is interesting, but it is not the sole
‘splainer of bike handling, something nobody knows better
than Waterford’s Marc Muller (more on him later).
The Educational-Type Fun Begins
FOR ABOUT SEVEN YEARS I’VE WANTED to experiment with trail
by getting some forks with adjustable rakes, so we did.
We also got non-adjustable forks with no rake, and with
65mm (whopping lot) of rake. You can do that when you
have your own bike company and a publication to get
out, but it takes more than snapping your fingers.
The bikes are 59cm Romuluses. The Romulus is a road
bike with what I think is a perfect geometry for allaround
road riding. Pertinent to this story, it has a 73-
degree head tube with 42.5mm of rake, which, with the
stock Ruffy-Tuffy tire (343mm radius), results in 60mm
of trail. It is as familiar to me as it gets.
We equipped three bikes with different forks—adjustable
rake, 0mm rake, and 65mm rake; and of course we have
a normal one, too (42.5mm rake), so really, four. I rode
it up and down Mount Diablo and the local streets and
roads. I rode it loaded and unloaded, on smooth and
rough ground, holding onto the
bars like you’re supposed to, and
no hands; over speed bumps (with
hands and no hands), with a heavy
basket, and at different speeds.
The Problem With This Test
It combines objective numbers and
subjective feelings, and what I feel
may not be what you’d feel, because
maybe we’re used to different
bikes, or one of us is more sensitive
than the other. Also keep in mind

It's a 56 cm, and (good eye) that is a Pletscher on the front... If
your fork dropouts have two eyelets each, you should be able to mount
directly to the upper eyelets as I have done. It does tilt down a bit
toward the front, but it's more stable than with clamps and I like
that.

By the way, the mountains that looked so sunny and warm a few days ago
are now dusted with snow.

[RBW] AHH Gets A New Old Crank Set, Old Rear Derailleur - Feels Fantastic !

2010-12-30 Thread AmiSingh
My bicycle came alive today, and we were synchronized. It was a great
feeling. Euphoria hit and and drivers kept staring. Maybe it's was
because of the big fellow in the red rain-coat riding atop the
turmeric-colored double-top-tubed bicycle. I felt like it was because
they were celebrating with me in sharing the huge smile upon my
face. :)

I gotta say, today was a good day.

Here's a photo for your viewing pleasure:

TA Carmina 185 cranks, Sugino chainrings 52 / 38, Shimano Ultegra 6700
rear derailleur. And waxed chain with a 80 / 20 Mix of Paraffin to
Bees Wax for clean silent riding.

[RBW] Re: New Simple one in green

2010-12-30 Thread EastBayGuy
Oops. Forgot to mention. The color description was just from a color
sample in the paint brochure. So we will just have to see what it
looks like when they arrive. I know from experience that you can't
always trust such a small sample from a brochure, but I am sure she
will be pretty sweet.
