[RBW] Re: Spring Fender Spacing Thingy
Roy, I had the same issue with my 26 inch wheeled All-Rounder. I used two corks as fender spacers at the lower front of the rear fender to get even fender spacing to the tire (26x2.0) and found I didn't need the spring-thingie. [RBW] 60cm "Maxway" Hillborne Photos
I've added a few pictures of a recently built 60cm "Maxway" Hillborne to our RB Gallery. This is a just arrived "2010" frameset from Taiwan, hence the lack of canti mounts. http://www.renaissancebicycles.com/gallery/rb-gallery-1/ Yes, this is an Ultegra 6700 bike ... the latest iteration of the Ultegra line -- this time in "ice grey". A few retrogrouches might balk at the customer's drivetrain selection, but after test riding the bike for a few miles, I certainly couldn't complain about the crisp shifting. Just let me know if you have any questions about the details of the build. Bryan -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "RBW Owners Bunch" group. That LBS is essentially the same as it was in 1962. I will have to check them out. As it happens, the street configuration there is among the least bike friendly in the city, so I avoid whenver possible (when I go to Rogers Park I usually take Damen to where it turns onto Ravenswood, then Ravenswood north - the cyclists have beaten a path at Peterson). It would seem there must be some way to get a bolt on either side of a spring so you can attach one to the bridge and the other to the fender. [RBW] Re: Rear Derailleur Capacity Limits
Jim, I checked the RD travel with no chain on, and it hits the 28t cog despite the B screw all the way in, at the highest tension. I'm not sure what value the Park Tool idea is though, as on my road bike, the XT RD will hit the 32t cog with the chain off, but with the chain on it's not too close, and it shifts fine. I'm using all 114 included links of a SRAM chain, BTW. As far as I know, the Bombadil doesn't need longer than a stock chain. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "RBW Owners Bunch" group. Re: [RBW] Re: 60cm "Maxway" Hillborne Photos
Looks great! You really take some fantastic bike pictures. I love that Hillborne orange. I've been riding a Surly Pacer quite a bit lately, and it's equipped with Shimano Tiagra "brifters". It's the first brifter equipped bike that I've ridden in a long time. I know it's sort of "sacrilege" on this list, but I really like the brifters a lot. They're super ergonomic and they shift perfectly (at least for now). What kind of bar tape did you use on the Hillborne? [RBW] Re: Wanted: very small Rivish/bobish bike (42-45cm seat-tube)
Thanks for all the recommendations. I should have mentioned that she is interested in a go-fast (partly to keep up with her boyfriend on his Indy Fab cyclocross). I have planted the seed of the issue perhaps being her boyfriend being too fast, rather than her being too slow, and am working to convince her of the benefits of bobishness. So the target bike would probably resemble a very small Rodeo or AHH more than an Atlantis or LHT... Btw, I think she could be convinced to spend $2000 on the right bike, but more may be a stretch. Great! Now I don't have to post pics of MY bike! Except for a SuginoXD2/Shimano LX Drivetrain with bar-ends and an Imperial saddle it's the same. [RBW] Re: 60cm "Maxway" Hillborne Photos
As far as I can tell the "decorative" elements of the lugs are a bit different on these Sams from the previous orange models. And, much to my chagrin, the water bottle bosses on the seat tube are mounted much lower- so low that the FD clamps between them. Kind of ridiculous for a 60cm frame. There is always the option, in addition to all other suggestions, of reversing the B screw to get some extra separation... [RBW] Considering selling my Colnago Tecnos 2000
I suppose in the spectrum of things this could be considered at the go fast fancy end of Rivendell-esque. A 54cm 1999 Colnago Tecnos 2000. Full Campagnolo 10 etc... I took this out for a 60 mile ride a couple weekends ago and came back realizing the go-fast in me done got up and went. I have absolutely loved this bike as the original owner for the last 11 years. Completely babied and in near mint condition. I'll admit, I love to have it hanging in the house, staring at it's Italianess. But if it's not going to be ridden...it may need a new lover. Never look back right? First rule of racing...what is behind you does not matter. I'm not really going to push it, but if someone here wants to cut a fine figure...contact me. Not sure on pricing...can't find ANY that are selling or have sold. Less than a complete Riv, more than a complete Surly. I will apologize for the crummy cell photo, but my camera was hijacked by my wife this morning. I can get detailed photos tonight. http://www.flickr.com/photos/42027...@n00/4841190254/#/photos/42027...@n00/4841190254/lightbox/ -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "RBW Owners Bunch" group. Re: [RBW] Rear Derailleur Capacity Limits
If the jockey wheel is hitting the cog it's too close. Shortening the chain is IMO the main way of rotating the cage so the jockey wheel position os farther from the cog. Then you have to see if operation over the rest of the range is acceptable. If it's not, you might need a different dérailleur. A B screw adjustment might help. Agreed Peter, having the FD mount between the bosses does seem like a design flaw, on any size frame. I suppose you could use spacers to hop over the derailleur clamp. [RBW] Re: 60cm "Maxway" Hillborne Photos
Design flaw? No. Design choice with which some will disagree? Yes. Many cages clear the FD without standoffs...the King Cage Riv sells being my favorite For every frame with a low mount seat tube H2O setup, there's an observer pointing out that it's unnecessarily harder to reach For every frame with a high mount seat tube H2O setup, there's an observer pointing out that it's unnecessarily harder to shoulder the bike Being able to easily reach the seat tube H2O bottle in my mind would only be important if you needed two different beverage choices while riding. Otherwise it's easy-access on the downtube and backup water on the seattube. Swap them out when the downtube one is empty. What it gets you is extra space in the frame for a bag or for shouldering the bike. Low-mount H2O bosses have screwed me up a few times when I've wanted to use a 'low-clamp' front derailleur. [RBW] Re: 60cm "Maxway" Hillborne Photos
I agree. Seems like the placement of the bottle cage bosses need not be so low on a 60cm. Especially so low that they overlap the derailer clamp. However... I have a double-top-tube 60cm Hillborne. While its bottle cage bosses are reasonable where they are (on mine they're both solidly above the derailer clamp), the simple addition of a frame bag mount (not the bag itself) to the lower top tube has made it rather tedious to use the seat tube bottle cage for an actual bottle. I never anticipated that I'd be able to use the actual bag and still have good access to the bottle cage. But I had hoped to be able to use the bottle cage when only the bag's attachment dealy is in place. So, on my frame anyway, having them a little lower would be nice. They could be a solid inch or more lower without a chance of overlapping the derailer. I'm thinking of adding a clamp below the front derailer specifically to *lower* the bottle cage mount position so that the cage is more generally useful. I haven't yet measured to see if it would be practical to do so. All that said... As problems go, this one barely rates. And it's probably the most glaring "imperfection" (if it even qualifies as one) my Hillborne has. It is one fantastic bike. Easy to build up, fantastic to ride. So, did you bring your tent on your camping trip? If you did, were you glad that brought it, or was it extraneous and not needed. Jim That wasn't my thread. I always planned on bringing the tent. I just about always prefer being in a tent, and am not an ounce-squeezer when I camp. I actually brought both a tent and a bivy sack. Bryan Very lovely looking build, one of the few Sam's I have seen built up as a "go fast" bike and it looks like it could go snap off a 20 mph club ride no problem. FWIW I really like the sidepull look on the Sam. Odd that all of the Ultegra group is "ice grey" except the shifters seems like the levers usually match the color of the rest of the group. So is Murphy ever going to give you back your Schwinn to finish.??? The pictures look great. I take a ton of pictures because I feel some what comfortable doing so and I get really bored on climbs that are steady. [RBW] Re: 60cm "Maxway" Hillborne Photos
Hadn't noticed, but it would make the newer Hillborne bikes easier to mount a frame bag, such as the Revelate Designs Tangle with a lower bottle mount. Yes, the fork crown is different now. I have an early Hillborne and the design is different. I like mine, but if I had the newer, I'd like that, too. As to the lower bottle mount, have it on another bike, and have used the presta nut spacer solution. Otherwise, don't really notice a difference in actually reaching down to grab a bottle. Oh, and add me to the list - those are very nice photos of a very nice build. Eric Platt St. Paul, MN On Jul 29, 4:57 pm, Thomas Lynn Skean wrote: > I agree. [RBW] Re: Cowboy shirts
Update - got my shirt yesterday. Washed it last night and wore to work today. At 6' and 220, the XL fits. In a perfect world would like the shirt tails and sleeves about 1/2 inch longer. That's my preference. It looks fine. And probably better when the shirt is untucked over MUSA shorts. Also, the color shown on the website isn't necessarily that accurate. The shot of the label is the best at showing the red. Otherwise, it veers a bit to the pink for my taste. In person, it definitely seems red. With a nice strong blue stripe. So, yeah, the shirt is nice. Eric Platt St. Paul, MN (well past 40 and looking like a dork for more than half that time) On Jul 23, 12:56 pm, Brad Gantt wrote: > I'm 6' 3" and a lean 195 lbs. [RBW] Hillborne out of town
Took the wife and our bikes on a short trip this weekend. Went to Wisconsin to ride, eat, and relax. Had been on these trails a couple of months ago, but with a different bike. This time, took the Hillborne. After some misgivings, realized the bike could handle these trails just fine. About perfectly, in fact. The 40mm wide tires were wide enough for the gravel and less than optimum paving. And the high handlebars and comfy handling of the bike combined to make riding seriously fun. The only thing less than ideal was the weather, which was slightly on the hot and humid side. Although not as bad as feared. At least until Tuesday. A short jaunt on the trails that morning had me perspiring quite freely. Didn't see any fish mistaking the air for the water, but it was close. May be adding a few photos to this set in the near future. Had to get a roll of film developed. And, well, we'll see what develops. Otherwise, the set is here - http://tinyurl.com/2bdcrct BTW, finally have over 1,000 miles on the Hillborne. For some reason, it was the last of the three main bikes to do that this year. Will need to make up for that. Eric Platt St. Paul, MN -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "RBW Owners Bunch" group.
