To answer Shaun's "completely off-the-topic" question: The Green and Orange Quickbeams were made by National (aka Panasonic). I'm not certain about the silver ones. When I had to fix a flat on my orange Quickbeam, I noticed it had a Panasonic rim strip, a Panasonic tube, and of course a Panaracer tire. I typically don't carry a whole lot of stuff with me. I have a Nitto Top Rack with a Big Loafer, in which I carry tools, tube, pump, rain shell, etc. I weigh about 230 pounds these days. So I would say that the total weight is probably in the neighborhood of 275 pounds. I always default to the max recommended pressure when I inflate my tires on account of my size; so initially I had the Racers inflated to 85 PSI. They rode fine at 85 but I noticed that after they lost some air, they actually rode quite a bit better. The "sweet spot" for me seems to be around 75 PSI. [RBW] more tire info gathering...
Hi, Does anyone have experience mounting the Marathon Supreme 700x50's on a green Sam Hillborne? Riv's site says the bike can take 44mm tires without fenders and the site also says the 50 Supremes measure to be about 45mm on a 22mm rim..so is that one millimeter a deal breaker? Also, what about the new Dureme in 50's? Same thing on a velocity synergy rim? I'm riding 37mm Paselas now with 50mm Berthoud/SKS composite fenders and its a great match, but I want to go as fat as I can without fenders for some light trail riding before my tour from NYC to Montreal at the end of May. I think the 37 Paselas will be just right for that trip. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "RBW Owners Bunch" group. Re: [RBW] Re: DBC 400K 4-17-10 - a set on Flickr
Have you tried stretching while on the bike? There are a number of different stretches to do while still moving along, although the best is still to dismount every so often and walk 'em out a bit. In the end, I think some strain and discomfort is inevitable -- at least it is for me -- when pedaling in that position for 100 miles. Note that I refer to strain, not pain. If it's painful, then there are other problems that should be addressed. One other member recently commented that he often raises or lowers h'bars and fiddles with his seat several times during marathon rides. That sounds smart to me. Wish I could give credit to the poster, but I forgot who it was, now. Re: [RBW] Re: New Bleriot Owner; Mushing thru turns
Thanks to folks who responded to my quandry about the Col da la Vie tires. As one of you suggested, I know that Schwalbes would give a surer ride. I have those on two other bikes, and you are correct. In fact, that's what prompted my question to the list because I am used to a stiffer tire. I guess what I meant to ask is does the 650B size have anything to do with the squishy ride, but when I think about it, I know it can't. (?) When I ride to the office this morn, I'll pump those tires up to 50-55 and report back. Several of you apparently disregard the sidewall advisement to max out at 50 lbs. I'll do the same. Re: [RBW] Re: New Bleriot Owner; Mushing thru turns
Hope you like 'em, Ray. I'm quite fond of the CdlV tires. BTW, I recall sidewall listing is the 1/2 way point for the pressure that blows them off the rim. So if blow off =100psi, then they put inflate to 50psi on the sidewall. It isn't the optimum pressure based on weight, conditions, etc. YMMV On Fri, Apr 23, 2010 at 6:06 AM, Ray Shine wrote: > Thanks to folks who responded to my quandry about the Col da la Vie tires. > As one of you suggested, I know that Schwalbes would give a surer ride. IIRC, all of the Quickbeams were produced by National/Panasonic, which is a fairly large frame shop. Toyo is a much smaller outfit that built the Atlantis, Rambouillet, Romulus, etc.; basically all the other non-customs until the Legolas came along (which was US-built), and then the Taiwan production frames. -- Bill Connell St. Paul, MN On Fri, Apr 23, 2010 at 5:28 AM, Angus wrote: > To answer Shaun's "completely off-the-topic" question: > > The Green and Orange Quickbeams were made by National (aka > Panasonic). This is NOT the World Naked Ride. Helmets are required in Oregon for riders age 15 and under. (They're a nice idea for everyone else's head.) Bring a sack lunch and we can enjoy a picnic at Sellwood Park before looping back through the Reed College Area. Ride will officially end at Ladd's Circle in SE Portland. (If you've been on the Slug Velo Rose ride in years past, we will follow a slightly extended version of this route, roughly 10-12 miles long.) Anyone wishing to extend the fun may choose to meander over to Lucky Lab for an ad-hoc, apres-lunch celebration. NO NEED TO RSVP. Just show up. (C-M-A Disclaimer: This is NOT an organized ride and there is no leader.) -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "RBW Owners Bunch" group. [RBW] Re: unclaimed custom/Grant
Grant, Can I offer an idea here. For many companies, part of the mystique and elements that build the long-termcult appeal are these very rare white elephant or skunk-works products. An example would be Fat City Tandems, or the Ibis Scorcher. Soemtimes these items are strokes of genius, but sometimes they are random accidents. I imagine this bike, if left as-is would develop a lore of it's own. The one odd-ball, that passes through collections, hoepfully gets ridden hard, and maybe ends up in one of the bike museums. I remember form one of your first Readers a piece talking about how you imagined 100 years in the future that someone would dig out a rough frame from the scrap heap, and would be able to tell by the lugs and design that it was a Rivendell (my memory isn't so strong, but I think that's how it went). Somehow this bike, while not being pure to your vision, would be one of these frames that bike scholar's argue about, and bike geeks stay up all night chatting about when and where they first heard about it. Just looking at the enthusiasm this one-off has cused on this board would be an indication of how this bike is already a cult object, and your fans are afraid that this one white elephant would be stripped of its tusks... Plkeas, take a bit of time to reflect. Maybe this is an opportunity to think about where in the life of Rivendell you need or want to inject these rare and truly unique gems (or aberations) into your legacy. Thanks! Shorter/higher stem would be a place to look. You might have someone snap an image of you on the bike from the side, so you see what you are doing. Sometimes, that can be instructive. I've found that the yoga I've been doing over the last year is really paying benefits. Specifically, as I used to tire, my torso would start to "hang" slightly from my shoulder joints. It's a bit tricky to explain rather than show, but you can often notice as your shoulders move up towards your ears. I'm now noticing this before it really starts, and can shift around a bit, rely upon the shoulder muscles that the yoga have helped restore, stack my bones a bit so I'm not relying on the tendons and muscles. That sort of thing. Also, a lot of low back pain has to do with core strength issues - i.e. stomach muscles. Cycling does nothing for your gut, and since the organs are just kind of hanging there, they pull down, exacerbating the problem. Again, the yoga has helped me feel when that's starting to occur. Finally, I'd offer that when you feel the pain, it's too late. You're better off being very proactive, as Ray said, in getting off the bike, stretching a bit, walking around, and moving differently before you start to hurt. Most of the randonneurs I know who do the longer distances all spent some time getting comfortable, and more importantly, staying comfortable, at shorter distances. This is apparently the frame: http://www.flickr.com/photos/25671...@n02/4512933760/sizes/l/ I understand the desire to change it to a more typical Rivendell frame before releasing it to the wild, but i think Braden has a good point in his post. I admit that i check out the prototype listings once in a while, just to see if there was something odd and interesting that Grant tried and later canceled for whatever reason. Rivendell certainly has a strong house style, but there's also a long streak of experimenting, so i don't think it would be so bad for something like this to exist as-is. -- Bill Connell St. Paul, MN On Fri, Apr 23, 2010 at 10:55 AM, Aaron Thomas wrote: > Have photos been posted of this mystery frame? I ride and like the Cdlv tires. I am north of 250 and I have the tires pumped up to 65 front and back. No problems last season or so far this season at these pressures. YMMV On Fri, Apr 23, 2010 at 6:06 AM, Ray Shine wrote: Thanks to folks who responded to my quandry about the Col da la Vie tires. 2+ on getting the Tektros. +1 for questioning the wheel size choice. If this is a 27" to 650B conversion, that's a really large jump (630-584=46mm diameter, about an inch in radius). I'd be really worried about pedal dragging. Put the crankset and BB in before you do anything with brakes and see if she's going to be scraping pedals like crazy. I imagine that inch you are dropping the bottom bracket will get made up somewhat with fatter tires, but it would be a shame to 'fix' your brake problem with more money and then find the bike is unrideable due to a too-low BB. Re: [RBW] Re: Pink Mixte Le tour Project..
I did a 27" to 650B conversion on a pink Mixte myself! A Miyata "90". BB musta been crazy high to begin with since it was still high after the conversion. Just measure the BB height. Less than 260mm might be a concern, but I've ridden lower without issues. Ryan On Apr 23, 2010, at 11:45, William wrote: +1 for questioning the wheel size choice. Manny, I can't really offer any mechanical advice, but I do know of a shop in San Francisco that rebuilds lots of bikes of this vintage. They've helped me fix up an 80's Azuki mixte I acquired a few month ago. It's a small shop close to Pier 39 and the vibe is low-key. Re: [RBW] Pink Mixte Le tour Project..
You might be able to file the hole for the centerbolt to allow for some vertical adjustment. Kind of like these Mafacs: http://www.flickr.com/photos/54878...@n00/4544396102/ http://www.flickr.com/photos/54878...@n00/4543765097/ If you do that in combination with filing the brake shoe slots, you might just make it. [RBW] Re: New Bleriot Owner; Mushing thru turns
I have the Hetres on my Bleriot, tire pressure ranging from 45-60psi (depending on how if I'm too lazy to pump up my tires, heh.) So far, it's been great for roads and light trails. Yeah, they're a little pricier, but definitely great, responsive tires. Like riding on a quick couch. Only warning I can think of are the sidewalls are extremely thin so you'd need to be mindful of where you're riding and how rough the terrain is. But again, aside from that, they're really good tires. Doesn't hurt that they're beautiful either. On Apr 23, 3:32 pm, James Dinneen wrote: > I also have a Bleriot. [RBW] Angeles National Forest Ride
Hey there- Visiting downtown LA from SF and was wondering if anyone here has biked the Angeles National Forest. I'm hoping to do 40-50 mile loop on Saturday and this seems to be the nearest big green patch on Google maps, hah. I'll also need to rent a bike as I've left the Bleriot at home. Any recommendations for shops would be helpful, thanks. Oh, and I have a car so you know of other nearby rides I'd love to hear about them. The hetres roll faster, corner better, and are even more plush than the CdlV. The Hetre is also very durable. i probably have over 5,000 miles on Hetres without a flat. It's a freakish tire. I still think it's overkill if you spend a lot of time on pavement. but if you spend a lot time in the dirt or mixed surfaces, the hetres are heavenly. especially if you like to descend fast on dirt and mixed surfaces - they inspire confidence, for sure. are they worth it? that's another question and entirely up to you. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "RBW Owners Bunch" group. [RBW] Under-inflated Col Da Le Vies- Was New Bleriot Owner; Mushing thru turns
Well, I pumped these Col De La Vie tires up to 65lbs rear, 60 lbs front and rode the long way into the office. It was much, much better. Those of you who knew I was under-inflated were absolutely correct, and I thank you. You who brought to my attention that the sidewall reads 50 lbs MINIMUM, thank you, as well. To be honest, I was just following Grant Peterson's advice, but that's no excuse. Inflation instructions for the Col Da Le Vie 35mm 650B tires on the RBW web site read: "At 36mm wide, it's voluminous enough to run as low as 25psi, and yet you can harden it up to 50psi or so if you like. Most of the time, compromise." I compromised. I'd advise against it. Thanks again, everyone. The Bleriot is a winner! Great fun, great ride. [RBW] Re: unclaimed custom/Grant
I'll be contrarian. It's Rivendell's call, and if they feel the need to re-do the bike before selling it, then they should. While from the photo, the bike looks nice, if Grant is not comfortable selling it like that, he shouldn't be pressured into doing so. In 20 years, is someone going to look at that bike and see "hey, a cool concept from Rivendell" or "what was Grant thinking?" Sort of reminds me of the Leica M5. Yes, a way to put a meter in a Leica M model. But the end result looked like something that wasn't "typical" Leica. The Hetre is my Favorite tire ever, but only on pavement. It has no tread to speak of and feels much less secure in dirt than a CDLV or Trimline to me. I have pathetic off-road skills however. Re: [RBW] Re: New Bleriot Owner; Mushing thru turns
I agree with Patrick. There's no comparison between Hetres and CDLV's. The CDLV tire, for me, has never been willing to mount on the rim properly. There's always a hump no matter how many times I've tried to get them to sit properly. Aside from that annoyance, the Hetres are faster, smoother, quieter, and make handling better. So far, I've never had a flat on a Hetre either, and I ride in volcanic, goathead-laden Chico. They are pricey, but so far I'm getting surprisingly little wear for as many miles as I've put on my Hetres. Off road in all but ridiculous mud or rock faces, they're great, too. Dirt in Chico means anything from nicely maintained fine gravel trails to this kind of junk: http://www.flickr.com/photos/gzahnd/2418266670/in/set-72157607024143730/ When the CDLVs wear out on my townie Bleriot, that'll be the last of that tire for me. And yes, for $60 vs $20 per tire, the Hetre had better be that much nicer! > On Apr 23, 4:32 pm, James Dinneen wrote: > to be frank, there is no comparison. [RBW] Re: unclaimed custom/Grant
of course that would be a fixed gear 29er... with no rear brake! It seems so odd to me I wonder who would be willing to pay even the Rivendell actual cost for this peculiar bike? Perhaps some collector who fancies odd and unique bikes? So unless someone coughs up the $$ Grant should do what he can to recoup his investment... is my vote. ~Mike~ On Apr 23, 9:07 pm, cyclotourist wrote: > Once upon a time when I was ordering my Rivendell (circa 1999) I came really > close to having it built as a 29er. I would, too, if I could afford it and it fit me -- despite the somewhat over-elaborate, for my taste, decoration. [RBW] Items for sale
I thought the group might like to have a look... A friend of mine is parting out a 1981 Specialized Sequoia on ebay. His descriptions are good and prices are right. http://shop.ebay.com/atsffan/m.html?_nkw=&_armrs=1&_from=&_ipg=&_trksid=p3686 -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "RBW Owners Bunch" group. Re: [RBW] Voyager in the Gallery
I briefly owned one of those; not bad for a $24.99 Goodwill find, since it was in good condition, but I found the frame rather unforgiving and heavy (I built it up as a fixed gear errand bike), though the harshness may have been due in part to the tires, which I forget but which were probably cheap.
