Good point on the triangle Doug; probably not too much risk of being
run down by light aircraft during my commute.

I found the whole ride kind of artsy, most of my commute is tree lined
and it looked very picturesque.

Thanks!

I think you're worrying unnecessarily, John.

To begin with, the issue with the CdlV isn't mainly that the tread is
thick as much as it is the specific type of tread, i.e., the
"mini-knobs". The Trimline was every bit as thick in the tread as the
CdlV, but it had significantly less rolling resistance. The famed Hetre
has a rather thick tread as well, which accounts for its remarkable
longevity, and it's also exceptionally fast and supple.

An extra half millimeter doesn't make for excessive thickness, although
it should add some useful service life.

If the grand bois is suitable, I can't see how the Pari-Moto wouldn't be as
well. Bill's restricting it to paved roads might mean nothing more than that
he has other, sturdier options available to him. And we knew from the start,

Many of the modern wind ups I see either have difficulty keeping
accurate time, or are heavy. Not sure about the one Vermont Country

Wish Timex still made the wind up camper. Although the last one I had

I guess it depends on what your "dirt" roads are like. Where I ride,
the Hetre's been splendid. But my "dirt roads" are well maintained
gravel roads, typically on very hard packed Virginia clay. There's
nothing soft or squishy about them - hard as a miser's heart would be
more like it.

[RBW] Cleaning shellacked bar tape

2010-02-13 Thread Buck
I shellacked the bar tape on my Atlantis a couple of years ago.
Bullseye amber over bright yellow tape which turned nice and
chestnutty and complements my honey Brooks saddle. What has happened
is that the shellac has worn and the tape has gotten black and dirty
in spots, particularly behind the hoods where my hands sometimes rest.
I have re-shellacked the tape in general, but haven't had much success
removing the dirt beforehand. (I know I can't remove dirt under
shellac.) So, my current plan is to gently brush the surface and try
to get back to the tape without the dirt. I've read that some folks
have used Simple Green. Anyone have a boffo way to clean the tape
before I re-shellac? Thanks.

[RBW] FS: Two 700c x 33 Jack Brown blue (kevlar) tires

2010-02-13 Thread neocyclist
No flats, excellent shape. I'm guessing the miles are in the range
500-1000. One tire clearly shows the checkerboard tread in the center.
The other one is smooth in the center.

Rivendell charges $108 plus shipping for a pair. My price is $60
including shipping to your lower 48 address. Paypal preferred. Or pick
up SF Bay Peninsula and save $5.

Re: [RBW] Re: Fw: [650B] Pari-Moto Update 2/12/2010

2010-02-13 Thread Bruce
It's sold as an "event" tire. As in a race day set of rubber. Not what you want
for an off pavement ramble through goatheads.

From: Steve Palincsar
To: rbw-owners-bunch@googlegroups.com

And we knew from the start, this was to be a tire of the "fast, light"
persuasion rather than a super heavy duty competitor to the Schwalbe offerings.

[RBW] FS: Chicagowig Street Straps

2010-02-13 Thread b hamon
I got a set of these and discovered that they confine my feet too much. Not as
much as Power Grips, but more than I care for. Apparently, I am doomed to a
life of pedaling on naked, flat pedals, because my knees just go All Over The
Place when I pedal. (I don't pedal circles, but ovals...)

Here's what they look like:

http://www.flickr.com/photos/chicagowig/sets/72157622336862973/

They do give more room to wiggle than power grips and don't jam your toes. They
can also be used with just about any shoe. Designed for use with bmx or other
totally flat pedals. I paid 45.00 for mine new, used them for three weeks, and
decided they weren't for me. I'd like to sell for 35.00 including shipping in
conus. I will toss in for free a set of MKS pedal flips (bolt-on alloy quills),
which help get into the pedals a LOT with these things. Paypal is ok. Please
reply off-list if interested. Thanks --Beth

[RBW] 1982

2010-02-13 Thread James Warren

Look at the photo on this page of the 1982 catalog:

http://www.vintage-trek.com/TrekBrochure1982.htm#page4

They're telling you that when you buy your good road bike, you can use it for
riding to meet the sweetie at the tennis court. And of course, it's also a good
road bike that you could become a roadie on.

What is "good" here? Good steel quality in the frame, not so in the fork. But
it's a really good road bike compared to its contemporaries.

While road bikes of the past few years have gotten way better than the 90's in
many different areas, I still feel like the spirit of this page of that catalog
is something that's been lost among the large bike makers.

If it returns, it will have its own marketing category (as it must!). They
could call it the "I'm All Right" category.

up a "country" touring bike and that wheelset might be just right. $300

Why not buy it now? If I don't get any bites from my email lists in the next

$300 shipped is a great price ...

I can also include for that price a Sturmey Archer crankset that's made to go

Well, I'm not sure it's quite that bad - the thickness is well in line
with the Grand Bois Cypres, and I use that as a general purpose tire and
have ridden it on dirt roads. Thank goodness we don't have goatheads
here in Northern Virgnia and Southern Maryland, and our NoVA dirt roads
aren't hard on tires the way some are.

No warnings about back pressure and skidding. Once the hub is in gear,
it is locked and I have skidded the back wheel a few times -
especially in low gear where it is super easy to lock it up! The only
thing to look out for is to be sure the hub is propery adjusted for
positive gear engagement. This adjustment is very easy to make and
maintain.

[RBW] Re: Fw: [650B] Pari-Moto Update 2/12/2010

2010-02-13 Thread Bill M.
True, 38 mm is huge for a road tire. But the Paris-Moto will be 50
grams lighter than a Maxy Fasty, barely heavier than a 650b x 32 mm
Cypress, but 5 or 6 mm wider than either. If Jan Heine's theories on
tire width and rolling resistance are true, the P-M should be faster
on the road than the Cypress. Not beefy enough that I'd want to
bounce it off of a lot of gravel, but light and cushy enough to (I
hope) be a delight on a long day's ride.

Even 42 isn't HUGE for a road tire. It all depends on how much you
weigh, and what sort of shape the roads are where you ride.

If you ride a lot on chipseal or badly broken pavement, 38-42mm is an
ideal size. You'll have a smooth, comfortable ride no matter how rough
the pavement.

[RBW] Re: 1982

2010-02-13 Thread EricP
Some has been lost. But some of that am not too sad to see go away.
Was looking at an old Trek not too long ago. Discovered that the rear
chainstays could barely clear 25mm tires. Going down to 700C or even
650B would not have helped much. Very little taper on that particular
bike.

Oh, and those handlebars. Ugh. That's one reason I jumped on mountain
bikes when they hit my radar screen.

But, yes, the "can do everything" attitude has been lost by the major
builders.

[RBW] 700x35c tires

2010-02-13 Thread Gino Zahnd
What else besides the Jack Brown and Schwalbe Kojak exist for
light-ish fast tires that are good for mixed terrain riding? Those are
two great choices, but I'm curious what else might be out there. I
know there's the Pasela, but that tire is too squirmy for my taste.

Thanks,
Gino

Respectfully have to disagree about the Hetre. When I ride with folks using
them, they are never at a disadvantage that I've seen. They seem to do
everything a Pasela can, while providing more comfort in the process. Now
this isn't anything steep or technical, but still a lot of dirt riding with
sections of both of the above. Again, I'm comparing them to 35-37mm Paselas
to which they seem about equal, and I ride those Paselas everywhere.

You can see them throughout these two sets:

[RBW] Re: 700x35c tires

2010-02-13 Thread amoll68
Gino,

I've been very pleased with the Marathon Supremes. My 35s measure
35.5mm on Velocity Synergy rims. I like the way they ride, and I've
been VERY pleased with their durability. I also commute on 32 supremes
- some really lousy pavement, wet glass, flints, stuff that has
punctured lesser tires. I also have them on my Bike Friday - that's
the only Supreme-shod bike that I've flatted on over the past two
years, and that was from a "Michelin wire" (wire strand from a steel-
belted radial) - and it slipped through the sidewall, and would've
punctured any tire.

Check 'em out on my AHH here:

I've also got Flickr sets for the Bike Friday, and my Schwinn Sports
Tourer commuter/porteur.

Best regards,

[RBW] Re: 700x35c tires

2010-02-13 Thread Jeremy Till
I've never ridden the Jack Browns or Kojaks so can't compare but these
have been serving me well this winter on my Trek, and will probably go
on my casseroll once fender season is over:

http://www.nashbar.com/bikes/Product_10053_10052_229039_-1_201485_1_201490

And they're f-ing cheap. They say 700x37 but are a little narrower,
so probably comparable to the JB's or Kojaks.

[RBW] Sackville SlickerSack/Platrack Review

2010-02-13 Thread Robert F. Harrison
My Sackville SlickerSack and Nitto Platrack combination arrived on Friday. I
paid for it with my member's rebate and, because I only bought one bike last
year (my QB), a few bucks of my own.

My Quickbeam is a great bike, as I've documented in other emails, but it
still needed an easily removable bag of decent size. My Sackville SaddleSack
(lg) is great, but I generally cable tie it to the back rack making it kind
of troublesome to remove if I want to go in and out of the office. When I
read that the SlickerSack would hold a small computer, I was sold. Just to
answer that question, yes it hold my 13" Macbook just fine.

After work yesterday I put the Nitto Platrack on my bike. The line drawn
instructions were helpful, but frankly this rack goes on very easily. It is,
of course, not a standalone rack, requiring either a Nitto Mini Front or
Mark's Rack up front. Since I've got cantis on my QB I'm using a Mini Front
Rack.

The only thing different on my installation is that I had to run the strut
supports to the inside of the upper platform instead of the outside as shown
on the Riv site's images. There does seem to be a slight design change
between mine and the one shown there. The tabs to hold the struts on mine
are a bit closer to the inside than what you can see at Riv. In order to
mount mine to the outside I'd have had a bit of curve in the struts which
would have added a bit of tension to the whole thing. In addition the
instructions that came with mine show the struts mounted to the inside
so...there you go.

In any case besides digging up a hacksaw I had no problems. I still have to
round off the struts a bit with a file, but I didn't seem to have one of
those around either. Sigh.

Today I got to take this new configuration out for a short ride. I decided
to go with a likely load and put my Asus Eee PC (10") with assorted goodies
up front as well as a camera and a cable lock. I'd guess I had about 7 or 8
pounds up front though I didn't weigh anything. I'm used to riding on
another bike with front basket so I wasn't expecting trouble. And...

...I none. My QB handled very well with the configuration. In fact I did try
riding a bit without hands and it was very stable. I don't generally ride
without hands so I didn't go far that way, but it certainly wasn't worrying
when I did.

At speed, or at least as much speed as I generate, the bike was great. It's
still responsive and I had no trouble with regular maneuvering in and out of
traffic and around obstacles in an urban setting. That's important to me as
commuting accounts for most of the miles I put on my bikes.

I did have to be a bit more careful at very low speed, but that's the case
with my "beater with a basket" bike as well. Again there was nothing to
worry about and it was all very comfortable. Indeed, because of my
experience with a front basket this all felt very normal and required no
real learning curve.

The bag itself is lovely. I also love the fact that there's been some
accommodation made for lashing other items on it. I can see that I'll
probably use this feature on my next camping trip (a three nighter in April
- more on that later). One can't really overstuff this bag, but if you are
carrying that much you probably need a different configuration anyway.

The only thing I think I'm going to have to tweak is the inner padding.
There's a Coroplast sheet at the bottom of the bag which works great,
but...things bouncing on it make a bit of noise on certain road surfaces. I
will probably add thin foam pad I have to the mix so things quiet down a
bit. I'm pretty sure it was the head of the cable lock I'd brought along.
The computer I had with me was in a padded bag as well so it would have been
quiet. And speaking of the computer up front, I'm writing this email on it
so clearly it survived the ride.

I've got some images of the bag and bike combo, as well as some shots of
the hardware, on Flickr at:

http://www.flickr.com/photos/mgps-bob/sets/72157623305527187/

To sum up, I think I'm going to love this combination, especially for work.
With a small computer, 13" or smaller, I can pretty much hook up anywhere
and believe me, I plan on it. I never felt as of the my control of the bike
was compromised. And, to top it off, the whole thing is simply gorgeous.

Aloha!

Re: [RBW] Re: 700x35c tires

2010-02-13 Thread Roy Yates
I'm also in interested in the Marathon Racers, but in the 26 x 1.5in size
for an All Rounder.

For a fairly fat tire, the folding version has a relatively light weight of
390 grams. The Marathon Racer is advertized as having a "pure skin
sidewall," but I can't tell from the web if I should view this as a plus or
minus. (I'm looking for a good brevet tire.)

I recall the quest for supple fast 26" (ie 559) road tires came up in a
recent thread. I don't recall anyone suggesting this is a tire for 26"
wheels that provides a ride similar to the Hetres. Can anyone here compare
them?

Thanks!
...Roy
