This looks great, thanks for the photos. I have a similar-era 700c
Rivendell that I am considering for a 650b conversion. I have not done
it yet but I still might this summer. Are the Tektros the only brakes
that are long enough to allow the conversion work?

Thanks!

[RBW] two racks and a bag FS

2009-03-09 Thread b hamon

I have been sitting on these for far too long, with no real plans to actually
use them in the near future. I need space and cash for another project. So:

1. Nitto/RBW mini-rack, front, works with canti brakes (center tang is threaded
and fits through fork crown hole): NIB, 80.00 shipped.

2. V/O front mini-rack, similar size and shape to # 1 but the center tang is
flat and must be drilled to suit your bike. NOTE: This drilling should be done
at a machine shop where they have a drill press. You CANNOT do this easily at
home with a hand drill, so don't even try.) NIB, 80.00 shipped.

3. Old, used TINY boxy bag sorta thing. Canvas with vinyl trim, measures 10
long, 6 inches high and 4 inches deep. Includes clear vinyl map sleeve;
rear-facing pockets and foward-facing main pouch close with oe-handed snaps.
Old, stained, Oddball size, good for very small bike or as a novelty. Still
holds its shape relatively well. 20 bucks alone, shipped; or 10 with one of
the racks. (No pix yet, I'm working on it.)

Please reply offlist via email.

[RBW] Looking for tips for Mounting Fenders

2009-03-09 Thread Jordan

Hi folks. I've recently had some SKS fenders mounted on my Atlantis.
Unfortunately, I'm not really happy with the results. Both the front
and rear fenders extend pretty far from the tire. This is especially
annoying with the front tire, as I already didn't have a lot of toe
clearance (I'm on a 63 Atlantis 2 with 700's).

It looks like both front and rear fenders are limited by a hard
mounting. In the case of the front fender, it's the mounting behind
the fork. I don't see how it could go any lower. For the rear fender,
the issue is the fastening to the bottom bracket. Both of these seem
addressable with the right hardware, but I'm not sure what that would
be. The parts that came with the fenders don't seem to do the job.

How can I get a nice close-to-the-tire mounting like I've seen in many
photos?

Thanks,
Jordan

[RBW] Re: Looking for tips for Mounting Fenders

2009-03-09 Thread Gino Zahnd

What size tires are you running?

One thing you can use is aluminum spacers, which require longer bolts,
like I did here:
http://www.flickr.com/photos/gzahnd/1678333665/in/set-72157602102746272/

And here:
http://www.flickr.com/photos/gzahnd/1679280400/in/set-72157602102746272/

The other option is to use fatter tires, which I've done since taking
those photos a year and a half ago.

For a front SKS fender, it would be helpful to see photos of your
issue. I've always mounted SKS fenders forward of the fork, but if you
want to mount them in the rear of the fork, get Sheldon's Fender Nuts,
perhaps.

Sometimes the design of a frame makes a good fender line very difficult
to achieve. You can fix a problem at the chainstay bridge with spacers
- a friend of mine uses the full length of a wine cork on her Atlantis.
You can also refashion the fork crown bracket, and use spacers under the
fork crown.

My Velo Orange was remarkably easy to fit fenders to. It was designed
for one particular tire, and the fittings were spec'd for the right
fenders to go with that width tire. The Atlantis, on the other hand, is
meant to be used with a very wide range of tire widths. The fittings
may be close to ideal with some size, not the one you're using... or
perhaps the bike simply wasn't designed with that in mind. Many are
not.

Thank you both for the information.

I'll post some pictures of the fenders & Atlantis later today. That
will explain the situation more clearly than I can. I'm still learning
a lot about my Bike. In the meantime, here is a pre-fender photo of my
ride:

http://www.flickr.com/photos/jibbah/2602078112/

I'm using Jack Browns (http://www.rivbike.com/products/list/
tires_tubes_pumps_patches?a=1&page=1#product=10-092), which is what
was recommended to me at Riv, where they built-up my bicycle. In most
cases I got "the usual" and I love these tires. It's a 33.33mm tire
and I'm using the 45mm SKS fenders, which are designed for this size
tire.

Cheers & Thanks,
Jordan

[RBW] Re: Looking for tips for Mounting Fenders

2009-03-09 Thread J. Burkhalter

Hey Jordan,

The Atlantis is designed with generous clearances, and I've never had
a problem achieving great fenders lines with my tires ranging from
1.5" to 2". I have the 26" wheel version, but this'll apply to your
700c. With a little patience and ingenuity you should get a great
fender line with most any tire you'd ride on the Atlantis.

I really like using old corks for rear fender spacing at the brake
bridge and chainstay bridge (preferably the wider ones from Belgium
Ales, but normal wine corks work just fine) . They're cheap and
plentiful, so if you miss-drill one or cut one too short just grab
another. Get some longer bolts at your LBS or local hardware store
(zip ties work just fine in a pinch, though). Drill a hole lengthwise
through the cork and cut to desired length with a handsaw. The SKS
fenders already have a hole for the bolt at the chainstay bridge, but
you'll need to make one at the brake bridge. While holding the fender
in place mark the hole spot. You can then drill this hole, but I've
found the reamer on a Swiss Army knife does the trick, too. You can
use the supplied SKS sliding bridge mount here, but drilling and
spacing the fender is really easy, makes for a more secure connection,
and looks loads better.

For the front fender, you might be able to use a piece of the hardware
that came with the fender set to fashion an extension to the mounting
tang (the piece that's about 1.5" long and has 3 holes in it. just
cut-off or bend-out-of-the-way any excess length). Not glamorous or
picturesque, but it'll do. Since the SKS fenders tend to be a bit on
the short side, I like to mount them on the front of the fork crown
and then install a mudflap to catch the bottom spray.

If this isn't making any sense, I'd be glad to post some pics.

A while back a buddy & I got a nice room at the Holiday Inn Downtown (the
round one just off I-5, near Little Italy) for something like $70 by doing a
bid on Priceline. When you bid, you're submitting to several hotels so you
can get some interesting responses. Another option is the old YMCA, near
the Amtrak station, has been converted to a hostel but I don't think it's
affiliated with the international system. Friends have stayed there and say
the price is right but rooms are pretty tight with your bike. Can't recall
the name but if you Google hostels in san diego it should come up.

[RBW] Re: Looking for tips for Mounting Fenders

2009-03-09 Thread Jordan

Jay,

Great info, but in my ignorance it is a little hard for me to follow.
I love the idea of using old corks, and I'd love to see what that
looks like on your bike. Your post also gave me a great excuse to buy
some fancy beer. So, will this kind of cork do?
http://www.flickr.com/photos/jibbah/3342709669/in/set-72157614978912773/.
If not, I may have to buy some wine. =)

Gino,

Some quick pics of my current setup are up:
http://www.flickr.com/photos/jibbah/3342709669/in/set-72157614978912773/

Of particular note for me is this one:
http://www.flickr.com/photos/jibbah/3343541884/in/set-72157614978912773/

I didn't mind my toe clearance too much before, but with my fenders as
far out as they are now it seems pretty untenable.

Steve,

Those Velo bikes look sweet. This is my first "nice" bike, so I hope
the versatility of the Atlantis was a smart move for me. My next bike
will be an inexpensive city ride, but down the road I'd love a bike
along the lines of the VO Randonneur. There is already a place in my
heart for a Hilsen, or a custom bike similar to it.

...of course, a motorcycle and a yacht would be cool too.

[RBW] Re: So Cal March Riv Ride

2009-03-09 Thread Esteban

Well, a local might be the worst person to ask about hotels...depends
on what you're looking for. The hostels are a good idea - lots of
botique hotels around town (The Pearl in Pt. Loma) and the regular
kind of places. Lots of variety in where to stay - Downtown, North
County, the desert, mountains, etc.

Anyway - hope you make it for the ride - should be great.

[RBW] Re: Looking for tips for Mounting Fenders

2009-03-09 Thread Gino Zahnd

Here's a wine cork spacer, which serves the same function as my little
aluminum ones:
http://www.flickr.com/photos/bluelemonphoto/2613409899/

Get a longer bolt, and run it through the length of the cork (drill it
out first!).

That bike was made for fatties, and if I had an Atlantis, I'd run 'em
a lot fatter than 33.333. The fatter tire would fill up all that space
too. But, that's just me!

[RBW] Saluki and Big Wood Hetre

2009-03-09 Thread Gino Zahnd

Tonight I put a pair of 650 x 42B Grand Bois Hetres on my
canti-Saluki. I've heard great things about them, the most important
of which is that they don't get flats like the ballet-slipper-like
Grand Bois Cypres. I've also read and heard first hand accounts that
the Hetre is quite long-lived. I'm skeptical right now, still. I
haven't ridden them, except up the road in front of my house and back.

A few things to note:
- The canti-luki easily, with no fiddling or rigging whatsoever,
swallows the Hetre tire with Honjo fenders.
- These tires, for a road-ish bike, look huge. They're pluffy, silent,
and seem like they'll be very comfortable.
- My current Honjos are 45mm, which I've used with CDLV tires until
this point. If I end up liking this tire size and durability, I'll
move up to the 50mm, which will still easily fit.

The biggest thing I've noticed in the one-whole-minute riding the
Hetre is how quiet this tire is compared to the squibbly CDLV. I like
that tire. I've toured on it, camped on it, I commute/run errands on
it almost every day, and it's a good, durable tire. It isn't fast, and
boy, is it loud! But for the price, you really can't beat it, and
it's still the go-to tire on my daily driver.

I'll report back after a few hundred miles on the Large Beech Wood.
