gconftool-2 -s --type="string" /desktop/gnome/interface/font_name "Sans

This should get your fonts back to a reasonable level and you can then
modify to taste from the gooey.

couple more things to try

rm -rf .gconf .gnome .gnome2 .gconfd (back them up first if you want)

try as a different user/root

audio skipping with 2.4.18-18.8.0 kernel

2002-12-05 Thread mike

I installed the recently released 2.4.18-18.8.0 kernel, and now I
consistently get skips in the audio output from grip. Has anyone else
seen this behavior? Is there a vm parameter I can tweak to up the
priority of audio data moving through the kernel vm?

It depends on the environment you're dropping this machine into. If all
of your developers are working on older hardware that doesn't (maybe even
can't without an unreasonable amount of work) support ssh, then telnet
might be your only option.

The VESA driver will give you very generic video support with this
chipset. RedHat XF86 rpms currently do _not_ support it; You have to
either try building XFree86 from current cvs or wait for a few months. I
hit this problem last week with a new development box.

A google for intel redhat 82845G will give you lots of info.

The system I've got has rh7.3 installed, and with the rpms currently in
rawhide for that system (XFree86-4.2.0-8) I've got no support for the
82845G. The rpms for rh8.0 are a higher patchlevel (XFree86-4.2.0-72),
though, so they might have included support by now.

The developer rarely uses console on this system, so I'm able to wait
however long it takes for updates to come out supporting the 82845G; I
havn't chased this very hard.

For me, they (the binary versions) worked perfectly out of the box. I had
previously used ones built from the src.rpms, which also worked perfectly.

One thing to check is how far off your system time pre-sync is from the
current real time. If it's more than a couple of hours ntpd will assume
something has gone wrong with the network time and refuse to sync your
system, exiting instead. To set your hardware clock after you've
synchronized on network time do:

/sbin/hwclock --systohc

Also note that the ntp people prefer you to use a stratum-2 or stratum-3
server, not a stratum-1 server like time.nist.gov. The load on stratum-1
is already extraordinarily high keeping the other strata in sync, so the
added load of workstations that could use a lower stratum should be
avoided. Pick 5 - 10 servers from this list:

http://www.eecis.udel.edu/~mills/ntp/clock2.html

and put them in your ntp.conf file. Ntpd will handle finding the best
timesource to synchronize against, and you'll minimize the load on the
core of the NTP network.

The more you have the better approximation of UTC you'll get. Only having
3 servers can lead to the following situation:

One server goes unavailable due to network problems at their site. One of
the remaining servers in your list has a problem that skews it 30 minutes
away from UTC but doesn't impact its network performance, while the other
remains relatively true. Your machine will average the two, and give you
a 15-minute offset time.

If you'd had another two servers with good times in your list, ntpd would
have ignored the time from the 30 minute skew.

We synchronize one local timeserver against a broad list, and all local
machines sync against that one. Many timeservers is good not only for
paranoia, but also gives a more robust and accurate local approximation of
UTC. If you can't get the boss to spring for a stratum 1 server, 10
stratum-2 servers' opinions is the next best thing :)

with current stock gnome2 gnome-vfs,nautilus, eel menu editing works
exactly right

The issue with the menu layout is basically that RH hacked
gnome-vfs2.0.2 for their menu layout (looks in desktop-menus first
rather /etc/gnome-vfs-2) so the fixed menu editing reverts to original
(better IMHO) layout

Gnome-vfs-2.0.4 changes a lot of things so if you have created any
personal items obliterate anything in .gnome2/vfolders/ to get the full
picture.

If you really want to you can probably restore by copying files from
/etc/desktop-menus to /etc/gnome-vfs-2/vfolders (havn't tested so I cant
say for sure)

The applications-all-users.vfolder-info file attached should give you
back your RH menus

(also gnome-panel-2.0.7 gives panel based menu item editing)

Two ways depending on whether you are dealing with Gnome1 or Gnome2 apps
(eg evolution)

For gnome1 apps open ~./gnome/Gnome and add an entryu like

http-show=galeon "%s"

For gnome2 go to preferences->advanced->file types and programs and
create a new service for your protocol

It is easier to just tripwire -m u -a -r report

However, this method will update the database for changed files (violations)
only. Unless the policy cfg file is updated, one will continue to get file
system errors. Files which simply don't exist must be edited manually in the
policy file (commented out is my approach). Once one has a correct policy
file, the method above will take care of updates.

Just a really wild-eyed guess, but check /tmp/MCOP-userid for permissions. Or
better yet, delete them and let Mozilla rebuild them. I had a totally
different problem that doing so solved, but your problem may be totally
different.

Good luck,

What is your HD strapped for? Master or Slave? It sounds as if 1) it is
strapped to be a slave, or 2) it's strapped for cable select and a)
your BIOS doesn't recognize cable-select, or b) you have an old 40 wire
IDE cable. Cable-select require an 80 wire IDE cable.

If you are running stock RH, what answer did you give to the firewall
question? RH defaults the firewall to be on and blocks just about
everything. Are you running IPtables or some such?

My system works fine. The down side of the Linksys router is that you
can only forward a port to one IP at a time. I use virutal servers on
my main Apache box so all the port 80 stuff goes to the same place.

One issue is that he is using a Linksys router. The Linksys will direct
a port to only one IP address. All traffice, even local traffic goes
through the router. If Linsys routes port 80 to 192.168.1.50 and he
tries to access the other Apache server on 192.168.1.60, he can't get
to it unless he specifically uses the IP address, or uses localhost fro
the console of the 2nd Apache server.

I know that ... I was trying to find a way to start nautilus with true root
capability.

I am using GNome. Seems to me I saw a KDE option on the menu to start super
user terminal and super user nautilus. If anyone runs KDE, maybe they could
check it and see if it really works and if so, how?

Does a similar setting exist to start the terminal window in the middle of the
screen rather than at the left top of the screen?

I have had some luck using --nodeps on items that hang after the db cleanup.

Thanks you for both pieces of information. I had been trying to find the doco
for the settings and looked in all the wrong places. Perfect.

I had asked RH customer support the same question and was told it was not
possible.

Service sgi_fam meaning?

I keep seeing this from logcheck. I have read the doco on fam, but it is not

It is a program that scans the logs and sends out a daily message depending on

Thanks. It is sorta thin on details -- at least for me.

Not a lot in the logs either. Nothing in messages, boot.log,

Secure has entries like:

Jan 21 09:51:41 www xinetd[664]: START: sgi_fam pid=20567 from=

Jan 23 18:22:17 www xinetd[28043]: START: sgi_fam pid=967 from=

which is consistent with what logcheck is telling me.

I get this in daemonlog (separate log for daemons):

Jan 22 16:35:07 www xinetd[28043]: Reading included configuration file:
/etc/xinetd.d/sgi_fam [line=13]

and these

Jan 22 17:39:06 www fam[28328]: test-monitor invalid request number 33
Jan 22 17:39:06 www fam[28328]: test-monitor invalid request number 32
Jan 22 19:55:56 www fam[28328]: test-monitor invalid request number 13

I have no idea where the test-monitor message was generated nor why. I grep'd
but did not find anything.

Be nice to know where and why these things are triggered.

iptables netmask

2003-01-23 Thread Mike Vanecek
I am configuring RH 8 iptables. I have read several sources, but am still
unclear on the impact of a netmask on the source/destination definitions.

For example, -s 65.50.0.0/11 would have a hit on what range of incoming packets?

If I understand it correctly, which I really do not, the 11 means to mask 11
bits of the ip address. Hence, 11 => 255.224.0.0  ??  (.111...)

But, how does this translate into the range of ip addresses for which the -s
is valid?

Will ip address 64.255.0.0 trigger a hit?

Will ip address 65.55.1.1 trigger a hit?

How do I test the incoming source address against the above rule and determine
when a match will occur?

Thanks, Mike.

logrotate lastlog

2003-01-23 Thread Mike Vanecek
The /var/log/lastlog file on my RH 8 install seems to be growing without
limit. I have searched the logrotate/syslog definitions and do not find
anything for rotating lastlog.

Should RH8 have a lastlog rotate somewhere?

E.g., logrotate.conf has

# no packages own wtmp -- we'll rotate them here
/var/log/wtmp {
monthly
create 0664 root utmp
rotate 1
}

Should it not be

# no packages own wtmp -- we'll rotate them here
/var/log/wtmp  /var/log/lastlog {
monthly
create 0664 root utmp
rotate 1
}

I would be tempted to add compress as well.

Thanks.

Of course, something is better than nothing. Tripwire is no more difficult to
setup and configure after initial install or a year later. It simply
establishes a base line database and then checks for changes from that point
on. As you say, if the system is clean when the base line database is created
then all is fine. Maybe he should run chkrootkit 3.8 to check things.

I moved it last night until I had time to check it out.

[admin@www admin]$ ls -alh /var/log/last*
-r1 root root 143K Jan 24 07:59 /var/log/lastlog
-r1 root root 18M Jan 23 20:22 /var/log/lastlog.1

[admin@www admin]$ du -h /var/log/lastlog.1
48K /var/log/lastlog.1

[admin@www admin]$ du -h /var/log/lastlog
12K /var/log/lastlog

Somehow 48K <> 18M and 143K <> 12K; sorta inconsistent?

Which is correct?

Notwithstanding this difference, where in the logrotate scheme of things does
lastlog get rotated?

Does anything special need to be set to run Mozilla from the command line
(environmental variables, etc.)? Do you just open a terminal and type mozilla?

I had some problems with 1.0.1 and 1.2.1 and finally gave up and installed
1.3a which helped. I would like to have been more conversant in the means of
seeing what was happening.

I have RH 8, BEFSR81 with latest firmware, Mozilla 1.3a.

Since some of your pop-ups work, check to see if you have current firmware.

I thought the left hand column in the peers output would give an indication of
the connection? If it is blank, does it not mean ntp is having a problem?

Actually, I do not want to act as a server, but rather just use external
servers to sync to an external server. Hence, maybe I am taking the wrong
approach??

Maybe I should shut down ntpd and just run ntpdate on a daily basis?

I used the defaults.

However, the more I read the more I think I should just put a ntpdate script
in cron.daily. I do not want to be a server, just sync my server on a regular
basis. Maybe ntpd is overkill?

Thanks, Mike.

By remote machine, does this mean outside the net. If so, have you enabled dmz
or portforwarding on the linksys router? If not, the packets from the outside
will never get to the server.

You can use iptables to monitor packets to the mysql port, something like:

iptables -I INPUT -p tcp --dport 3306 -j LOG (you may have to check the syntax)

will record incoming packets for that port.

Have you tried turning off the firewall?

# Flush all rules
iptables -F

# Set the default policy to accept
iptables --policy INPUT ACCEPT
iptables --policy OUTPUT ACCEPT
iptables --policy FORWARD ACCEPT

If that is not it, then one of the mysql gurus will need to jump in.

Cliff, thank you. I had come to the same conclusion and have a script in
cron.daily with

/usr/sbin/ntpdate -vs chimer.unt.edu otc1.psu.edu ntp0.cornell.edu
time.nist.gov clock.sgi.com
/usr/sbin/setclock

Thought I would watch it for a few days then clean it up a bit.

Re: vsftpd connects then sleeps

2003-01-28 Thread Mike Vanecek
Hate to answer my own, but I resolved the issue. First, I configured vsftpd as
a standalone. The minute I did that everything took off. After reading
bugzilla, it seemed prudent to download 1.1.13 from rawhide. Its install
defaults to a standalone install with a new vsftpd folder in /etc.

Hate to think about the time wasted on what should have been a simple and
straightforward task.

E-mail anti-virus scanner

2003-02-01 Thread Mike Watson
Anyone know of a good smtp e-mail antivirus scanner that doesn't cost an
arm and a leg? I have F-Prot loaded and that's ok as a filesystem
scanner, but I need something to scan e-mails and I don't like the
milter approach. I've tried amavisd and can't get it to work---it
always aborts in error.

Web Based Newsreader

2003-02-06 Thread Mike Vanecek
I have Open WebMail installed as a web based email reader. I would like to
install something along the same lines to allow news group reading. I do not
want to run a nntp, just have web access to a reader so that header
information is maintained on a one machine. Hence, one could read news groups
from any machine using any browser and always have the group, group headers
counts, read/unread flags, and so on kept on a single machine.

I searched Google, but did not find anything that seemed to meet my needs
since I am not looking for a local newsreader (pan, etc.), but rather a web
based reader.

Anything anyone has used with RH 8?

Thanks.

A Basic subscription to Red Hat Network provides:

* Email notifications of available updates (errata)
* Flexible scheduling of updates
* Delivery of the actual updated files (packages)
* Summaries of update results

Red Hat Network Basic Service offers all of the functionality formerly found
in Software Manager at a new low price. Features include:

* Errata Notification. Be the first to know about Red Hat's patches.
Subscribe to email errata notification through Red Hat Network.
* Improved Search Capabilites. Search through Red Hat's collection of
packages and errata.
* Instant Errata Updates. Immediately bring your systems up-to-date with
the click of a button.
* Instant ISOs. For customers who have purchased subscriptions to Red Hat
Network, ISO images are available for immediate download. Beat the rush to the
FTP servers by downloading directly from Red Hat Network.

I had the Basic service with the boxed Pro set I purchased. Where exactly
should I have found the above features once I logged onto Rhn? Somehow it was
not clear to me that I had any added value. The couple of questions I posted
to customer support during the install period did not impress me much either
(more help here!). Would probably not mind the $60/yr donation if I understood
better its benefits.

I guess one could always go with a 500MB /boot, a 1 GB sway, and whatever is
left over goes to /. The suggestion that separate partitions are need to
protect from run-away programs, security, and so on may be valid. However,
guessing the incorrect size of a partition could cause more of a problem?

Please set me straight if doing such a simple partition is really a potential
exposure to security.

Understand. However, I was trying to determine the benefit of renewing the 60
day subscription. Obviously, I must be missing out on some of the advantages
of the basic over the demo or was looking in all the wrong places.

Tripwire reports

2003-02-07 Thread Mike Vanecek
After a while, tripwire reports will start to build up in
/var/lib/tripwire/report/. Does anyone have a crontab script or other scheme
for removing the old ones on a periodic basis?

Thanks.

I have not downloaded ISOs in the past, but maybe I should. I typically buy
the initial pro release and do cheapbytes later if I need an upgrade. However,
I think I will extend my subscription and try it for year. Thanks to all for
the insights.

That comparison helps and confirms what I had thought. The Basic subscription
for a single system user buys ISOs and rhn access during high load periods. I
have not done ISOs in the past, but maybe I should. Thanks for the link, it is
exactly the information I needed.

That is exactly what I have in mind. I think Michael was suggesting using the
Find with maybe the "−mtime n File’s data was last modified n*24 hours ago."
arg. I was just looking to see if the magic already existed before trying to
invent the wheel again. I am surprised that such a feature is not included
with tripwire.

New RH 8.0 kernel

2003-02-08 Thread Mike Watson
I just updated to the new kernel Red Hat just released. When I
rebooted, it didn't recognize the proc nor swap filesystems and asked
for fsck to be run. I rebooted using the previous kernel and all was
OK.

I'm running on a AMD Duron, 800 MHz, half of a WD 80GB drive, 192MB
memory. All other errata has been applied.

Anyone else have this problem?

Mine is an Athlon 1.2G with 384MB memory. The errors where consistent.
I use the default kernel since I don't keep the source on this box.
Maybe the re-compile you did fixed it?

Tripwire Report Purge

2003-02-09 Thread Mike Vanecek
I have put this in crontab to purge my old tripwire reports.

# check for tripwire reports files and delete old ones
0 3 * * * root find /var/lib/tripwire/report -daystart -type f -mtime -90
-mtime +29 | xargs -r rm

I have a global alias set for rm = "rm -i" which works if I do a rm filename.
Set in /etc/profile.

However, if I run find /var/lib/tripwire/report -daystart -type f -mtime -90
-mtime +29 | xargs -r rm from a terminal, no interactive prompt occurs.

I have read the xargs man, but did not see anything about xargs overriding
global aliases.

It nice that it does not prompt since it is being run out of crontab. Yet, I
was surprised not to see a delete prompt when testing.

Is this correct?

Thanks, Mike.

Menu editing in Gnome was left out. It is discussed in bugzilla. I would give

figure a way to have a web based news reader - been playing with leafnode

When should one use /etc/bashrc as opposed to /etc/profile? Not always sure
which one in which to put system wide changes.

A couple of questions...

What type/brand/model router ar you using?
You referenced cable---what kind? Cat 5?
Are these internal or external clients?
What is the distance between the server and (1) the router/switch and
(2) if the clients are on the same subnet/switch/router, what is the
distance between them and the switch/router/server?

I suspect that due to the distance, your client NICs are switching down
to 10 MPS. 100MBS begins to see errors when cable runs are over 100
feet, even with CAT 5. I had a similar situation at my office not long
ago. We had to install a router between the switch and some long
distance clients to get back up to 100mb. We were using VoIP so the
speed difference was quite noticable.

You might want to check it out.

Color Control in RH8

2003-02-24 Thread Mike Vanecek
RH 8.0 w/Bluecurve theme.

I user gnome-terminal (with black on white using xterm colors) to ssh into a
RH 7.1 system. The background color of the ssh session is white. I then run
slrn. The background color definitions for the slrn session are set as white
(not using the default). However, everywhere that should be showing as white
is showing as lightgrey on gnome-terminal. Someone on the group tested the
color definitions using xterm (do not know what setup) and the white shows as
white.

The lightgrey is pretty much the same grey that sometimes looks like the
default color in bluecurve.

Where in all these connections can I look to force white to show as white for
the slrn session?

Thanks.

Mike.

I'd advise you to re-check the Dell. My compnay bought several to use
as production servers. Several had some intermittant problems and two
just would not boot after the image was copied on them. We discovered
the for any given model, so two are alike until they are on the same
production run and even then there is a good chance the innards will be
different.

Seems that when Dell runs out of parts, rather than get the same, they
just get an "equivalent". They means, if you have a large number of
servers, that your development and testbed boxes may be totally
different from production. Makes things VERY hard to debug when you
server goes south.

Now we buy HP (Compaq under the HP name) and we know that all will be
the same for the same model.

THis may not be an issue if you only need 1-2 servers. I deploy 60-70
at a time.

Recent Kernel problems

2003-03-09 Thread Mike Watson
I have an AMD Duron, 800MHz clone box running RH 8 with all the errata
except for one. I cannot load the most recent kernel upgrades since
2.4.18-19.8.0. There have been two kernel releases since that version
and I have the same problem with both.

When loading the system, when /proc is mounted an error occurs and
triggers entry into manual mode to run fsck. None of the previous
kernel do this and I have not had any power loses that would force an
fsck on rebooting. I removed the previous version of the kernel when
this occured and now it also does it for 2.4.18-26.8.0.

After the previous kernel failed, this same system will now not reboot.
I always have to power off or hit the reset button. I cannot find any
reason for this. I've reloaded the BIOS and reloaded grub without
change. Anyone have any idea what's going on? Any way to fix?

I've not had any problems outside of this. When I first built this box,
I loaded the entire set software from a boxed set.

Yes, I have. When I first had the failure, I removed it using rpm -e,
verified the filename and re-installed. I had the same problem. Both
times I used rpm -Uvh. This problem, failing to mount /proc, has
occured with the last two kernel updates for 8.0.

I always keep the oringial .rpm file for the previous two kernel
releases---just in case.

I am listing to Yanni on Gnome with RH 8 with the default Volume Control and
whatever CD player comes with Gnome just fine. I tend to agree with the others
that the XP test is not a valid check of the connection between the CD player
and sound card. I have seen more than one install where the wire was not
connected.

Put in a -j LOG for port 80 and log all incoming 80 packets (this needs to be
before the -J ACCEPT for 80) for the interface that is passing packets to the
server.

What do the /var/log/httpd/access_log and error_log tell you?

You have checked /etc/hosts.deny?

Run Apache in debug mode to see that the packets are indeed being routed to
Apache?

I have had that happen on a different package myself. No matter what I did,
the rpm would hang (IIRC it was plugger).

The approach I took, after cleaning up things, was first to determine if any
dependencies existed. You might try rpm -ivh --test package; I do not remember
if that will run or it hangs also. You can use the --requires to see if
dependencies exist.

The package I was installing had none. I then tried rpm -ivh --nodeps package
and it installed.

Please keep in mind that using nodeps can be dangerous if dependencies do
exist. Also, I was experimenting trying to find anything that would work on a
non-production machine.

FWIW -- YMMV.

If you find a different solution, please post it back here.

Mike.

iptables -L -v -n runs faster since reverse DNS lookup is not needed.

> cat /etc/sysconfig/iptables

This will only be true if one has previously done a service iptables save to
create the file. Otherwise, the file will not exist. In my set-up, I write my
own init files so that I do not do a save.

Would you please expand on this? I am not seeing any difference between the
two. Of course, iptables -L INPUT -v -n would be something else.

Stale lock files are likely the problem.

rm -f /var/lib/rpm/__db*
rpm --rebuilddb

The above commands should fix it, short term. It will probably keep
happening, however.

Sorry, do not mean to be thick, but the man iptables says,

   -L, --list
List all rules in the selected chain. If no chain is selected,
all chains are listed. It is legal to specify the -Z (zero)
option as well, in which case the chain(s) will anatomically
listed and zeroed. The exact output is affected by the other
  arguments given.

would not iptables -L list all iptable chains??

Screen goes blank?

2003-03-20 Thread Mike Vanecek
RH 8.0 w/all updates.

I have had 2 or 3 instances here lately (do not remember when it first
happened) in which the screen went black with a single green line on the left
side of the screen. They happen while I have left the session and monitor
running running for a while with no activity. I would think screensaver,
except that the system failure does not always occur and I have returned with
a screensaver image on the screen.

If I were to guess, it started after installing the last couple of kernel
updates. When it happened today I had Mozilla 1.3a open, a Gnome-terminal
session open with 3 tabs (one of which was logged onto to root and one of
which was doing a ssh session to a RH 7.1 system).

I left the terminal for about 30-45 minutes and when I returned, the system
was blank. I did a Ctrl-Alt-F1 thru F7 with no change and a Ctrl-Alt-Delete.
Evidently something trigger a system reboot.

About the only thing I can find in the logs is:
