fonts dont show in open offc or mozilla
I've installed my true type fonts in /usr/share/fonts/local installed them as indicated in the Release notes. They appear in all the desktop applications, but do not appear in the font selection lists in open office or mozilla or galeon. I can't find an answer to this problem in the documentation disk. Is there a solution to this? Another issue is font quality in general .. it's not as good in psyche as it was in valhalla .. same fonts, same hardware, just not as sharp .. even tried the anti-aliasing feature .. is there a specific reason for this? Any workaround?
cdrecord obsolete
I have a usb cdrw .. it won't work under cdrecord-1.10, but works fine under any cdrecord-1.11 version. Is there a more up to date version that's compatible with psyche available?
evolution font too small
Is there a way to change the font size used in evolution .. everything is too small for me?

The menubar, toolbar, menu lists, and especially the summary display. I have my monitor at 1028x768 and don't want to reduce it. I know in mozilla there's a userChrome.css file that can be customized to enlarge gui fonts, and was wondering if there is some similar capability with evolution. Paul

I used to use 'rpm --checksig --nogpg *rpm' to check rpm's before installing them. Now, I understand it's supposed to be 'rpm -K --nogpg *rpm'. However, when I enter this, I get an error message '--no gpg: unknown option'. The man page says it should work, so what's the problem?

Just create a text file .. call it 'mybash', and put one line within it: 'my bash' ..you can do this with the following command: $ echo bash mybash > mybash Next open up a term and enter 'top' to be able to see your memory usage .. then open another term and type 'bash mybash' to start an endless loop of the mybash script. You'll see the swap get consumed eventually. At some point it will run out of memory and die on it's own.

Mozilla 1.2b (w/ xft2) and Galeon
Hi, I've upgraded to mozilla 1.2 and it seems to break galeon. Whenever I try to start galeon, it complains about not finding mozilla and specifying MOZILLA_FIVE_HOME. How do I fix this? Is that just an env variable or do i have to hack into some galeon config file? Cheers, Hesty __ Do you Yahoo!? Y! Web Hosting - Let the expert host your web site http://webhosting.yahoo.com/
Re: Mozilla 1.2b (w/ xft2) and Galeon
I didn't just untarred the executables, I got the rpm and did an rpm -Uvh on the package, hence my current problem. My current work around is to create softlink on /usr/lib/mozilla-1.0.1 to /usr/lib/mozilla-1.2b and galeon complains initially about the mismatch version but runs OK afterwards. I'm just wondering if there is a more "seamless" way of getting galeon (or other apps which depends on mozilla) to work. Eventual idea is Home LAN, 2 machines, > both linux, this machine is hooked to DSL (perm. IP), > eth0, and other machine hooks to this via eth1. Basicly that's what I've been doing for about 5 years. I've used my Linux box to route all network traffic to the internet, using different ISPs and technology. Right now it's a cable-modem, but to Linux it really doesn't matter. > At boot everything works: Hmmm - why do you boot without eth1 ? > But if i activate eth1, now eth0 looses capabilities. Sounds very much like a route problem. What does your route look like before you run 'ifup eth1' - and how does it look after ?? >From your qoute eth0 still remains configured - so it doesn't look like a driver problem. Well, first of all, I would activate both interfaces by default. Then I would check the ifcfg-eth0 and ifcfg-eth1 for route-setup. You should use GATEWAYDEV=eth1 if eth0 is your DSL. Remember - this will NOT by itself enable routing from your home LAN to the internet. You'll still need to setup a NAT and enable ip_forward. Most basic HOWTO's explain how to do this. Can't Connect to MYSQL Remotely
Hello All, Installed a RH 8.0 server with MySQL and when we try to manage it remotely using MySQL's control center, it can't make the connection. We get an error back stating "Error 2013: Lost connection to MySQL Server during query." When we try to telnet into the server using the 3306 port, it disconnects us. Now we have a 7.3 server running right beside it with the same exact settings, and our firewall has 3306 open and the server's hosts.allow file has it configured so that mysqld will be allowed. SCSI Device Recognition Problem
OS: Red Hat Linux 8.0 Hardware: Dell C800 Laptop SCSI Device: SmartDisk Corp FireLite Drive IEEE 1394 SBP2 Device I am having a problem mounting a 30GB Firewire Drive. In an older release of RH (7.2 or 7.3): 1.) The device was recognized on system init (/dev/sda1) 2.) I made modification to /etc/fstab for (/dev/sda1) 3.) mount -t vfat /dev/sda1 /mnt/firelite Everything was in order. In RH8.0, the device does not seem to be recognized and steps 2 and 3 do not work... which make sense since the system does not see the drive as /dev/sda1... I found a script that rescans the scsi bus and adds the device, then the mount command works fine... This does not seem like the proper way... plus having to be root to run the script because of the files it manipulates is not the way I would prefer to go... There must be an easier way to do this... on sys init... and not having to be root... Woes installing 2 CD drives on Red Hat 8
em) In closing, the actual drive that I want to use is a brand new (and I suspect, not defective, as the problem is the same with whatever drive I use) Artec Super 56X, and I have tried all the drives I've experimented with (the Burner, and whichever of the three CD-ROM's) as both the master AND the slave (making sure the jumpers were set correctly.) My Bios always detected the drives I was experimenting with as whatever I set the jumpers at, master or slave. And like I said, they are both functional in Windows XP, but when I try them in Red Hat 8, Red Hat only picks up one of them. Oh yeah, when I only have one hooked up, it is detected as SCSI (emulated, of course, as these drives are all IDE), but when both are hooked up, it says there are none that have SCSI emulation enabled (this information was gotten from kcontrol | information | SCSI) I just tried another experiment, and when I tried to mount /dev/cdrom, it said it wasn't a valid block device. The problem is, if I were to disconnect the slave drive, and reboot, all of a sudden it would become a valid block device. If I'm wrong on that last point, I'll send a correction as soon as possible. Another thing I remembered, when I first got the new computer, and I tried to install Red Hat 8 with what turned out to be a bad CD-ROM drive, it wouldn't install. When I removed the bad CD-ROM drive, I was able to install Red Hat 8. The strange thing is that I wasn't using the bad drive to install Red Hat, I was using my Burner, as I had already had suspicions about that old CD-ROM drive. But it gets stranger: with that same CD-ROM drive connected that kept me from installing Red Hat 8, I was able to install with absolutely no difficulty, Red Hat 7.1, and mabye 7.2 If that sound confusing, then I think I explained it correctly :( I truly hope this wasn't too long winded, but I am just so used to Red Hat perfectly picking up any hardware I throw at it: I added a harddrive, and both burners that I've had were all detected automatically, with the appropriate entries automatically added to /etc/fstab, so maybe you can understand why I'm really confused by this. If you have any questions for me, feel free to ask. If you ask me anything too hard, I might have to ask for help just so that I can respond to your question :) Thanks in advance for your help :) Steven P. Should I erase Mozilla 1.1 Before Upgrading, Since Psyche Uses 1.0.1?
I'm getting ready to to an upgrade to 8.0 from my 7.3 stock disto. I've previously upgraded Mozilla to 1.1-0. Psyche uses 1.0.1, IIRC, and presumably Nautilus and Galeon are built with this dependency. Should I erase the Mozilla packages before doing the upgrade? John

I've since looked on bugzilla and found a couple of identical traces. The reports were marked as new and not yet assigned. My sys specs: Red Hat Linux release 8.0 (Psyche), Kernel 2.4.18-17.8.0 I got this trace by executing from the command line. Same result whether logged in as user and su'd or logged in as root. I have really taken to Xfce, and its sprightlyness. Adding it to the chooser, and startup script of the GDM was straightforward. It is very well suited to thin client rollout -- vertical applications, office desktops, and LTSP are no-brainers for it. That code calls out for factoring and modularization -- make a subdirectory to hold Xfce.conf, twm.conf, IceWM.conf, failsafe.conf, and yes even gnome.conf and kde.conf, and wxyz.conf, and be done with the issue. Solve the visibility issue within the 'setup' config tool, just as we do with xinetd and initscript items, to check for a # visible: yes line in the .conf files, or with symlinking (less elegantly) a la 'alternatives'. The newly shipped Apache httpd.conf is doing the first in the current release (look for /etc/httpd/conf.d/ ; it will REALLY make management of virtual domains, and per directory extensions trivial -- I have been rewriting tools in support). -- Russ Herrold
Firewire Drive does not work with new kernel!
Hello All; With the stock kernel under RH8 we had a Lacie external Firewire Drive working flawlessly. We had the following entry in fstab to mount the drive; /dev/sdb2 /mnt/LaCie ext3noauto,owner,rw 0 0 With this entry, we could then right click on the desktop and (un)mount the drive. Since we upgraded to a new kernel using up2date, this is no longer possible. We get the error message that /dev/sdb2 is not a valid block device. When checking /proc/scsi/ the drive is not listed but the SBP-2 loads and sees the drive. Can someone tell me what changed? By the way, we also tested the packaged Rawhide Kernel and the same thing occurs. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Sincerely, Bruce P. Morin

FTP issues
Hello, Everyone :) I'm sure I need to give you more information than I have to assist you in helping me with my problem, but I'll tell you what I do know (I know more now than I did before I went to work today :)), and then please feel free to tell me of any further information that you may need, and I'll do my best to answer :) Step 1: Open any of the two graphical FTP clients that I have installed on my machine (gFTP 2.0.13 or kbear 2.0beta2) and attempt to download any file. Step 2: When the file finishes, in either gFTP or kbear, the file is not saved to my machine, but in gFTP, the file finishes and it opens it up in a viewer if it's a text file, and if it's, let's say a RPM file, it will try to open it up in the viewer, but of course the viewer will remain blank. In kbear, before the file even begins to download, it displays the "Open With" dialog instead of beginning the download (the behavior between the two applications looks different on the surface, but as you can see, it amounts to the same thing.) In both of the cases in Step 2, no file is downloaded, I only get to view, or attempt to view, the file when I run gFTP. When I try kbear, I only get the "Open With" dialog. By the way, I just tried to download a file in kbear, and after I chose, just to experiment, a text editor, to open the RPM (just to get the download to start), it said it was saving it it /tmp/kde-steve, and the file that was there (it was deleted by the program) was the exact size of the RPM I downloaded, and the file name ended this way: .rpm The only other evidence that I have is that the last file I downloaded sucessfully was the BigMem version of the updated kernel. I got it from updates.redhat.com I have installed it successfully, and have had no other problems since then. I did try rebooting using the old kernel, but I still have the same problems explained above. I have read, write and execute priveledges in my home directory, and I made sure that I am the owner of it. I could find nothing obvious in the setting/options menus in kbear or gFTP. I am running Red Hat 8 with an AMD Duron 650mhz processor, approx. 383 megabytes of RAM. I have all the official updates installed, and I believe I got them all from updates.redhat.com Like I said earlier, if you need any more information, feel free to ask :) I am willing to learn, and I am sorry if this problem turns out to be a no-brainer (I did all I reasonably could before I contacted you.) Re: FTP issues - Solved :)
Hello, Everyone :) I just had a flash of inspiration and I looked for the gFTP configuration file in my home directory, to see if anything was obviously amiss, when I located the following: # This defines what will happen when you double click a file in the file # listboxes. 0=View file 1=Edit file 2=Transfer file list_dblclk_action=0 When I edited the file and changed the "0" to "2", voila!, my problem was fixed :) When I looked for the configuration file for kbear, I found nothing obviously wrong in it, so I just deleted it, and when I started kbear back up, it worked correctly also :) But I guess I'm still curious: why did the setting related to this issue change in both applications, when I did nothing to change it. It almost appears to have changed on it's own :( My wife doesn't use Linux on our computer, and no one else has access to it, so it's a mystery I do have a suspicion that it may have been done by our cat Linus (pronounced Lee-nus. Guess who we named him after :)) Sorry to have bothered you :), I guess I need to have more confidence in my investigative abilities. That, and my brother Dave, our families resident Linux guru called me a genius once :) Anyway, if anyone has any ideas about how that setting got changed in both apps, please let me know. Frequent Konqueror Crashes
Hello, Everyone :) For a few weeks, Konqueror has been crashing so frequently, it has become just about useless. By way of illustration, if I use it to do much more than look at the names of the files printed on the screen, it won't be long before it crashes. My question is, as I am running the official update of KDE that Red Hat just released, do I report this to Red Hat, or to the KDE developers. And also, would I be correct in assuming that unless the backtrace reports are different, it would be really rude to send a report every time Konqueror crashes? I must make clear that this began to be an issue before I installed the official Red Hat updates. Of course I am running Red Hat 8, and I have all the official updates installed. And, when I installed Red Hat, I installed all 1400+ packages. Thanks for your help on this matter :) Steven P. ATI 9700 PRO and Multi-Head Configuration
Hello Everyone, I am curious to see if anyone has gotten an ATI 9700 Pro to work in Multi-Head Mode with the latest drivers from ATI? We can get the drivers to work with single display, and "large display" but when we configure multi-head, what we get on the second monitor is a dark screen, and when we move the curser onto that monitor, we get the "x" curser. We can't move any windows over to it. Any help or direction to appropriate documention, (other than the ATI driver page, since we have exhausted that document) would be greatly appreciated. Help with Firewire Hard Drive under 8.0

RedHat 8.0 automatically loads the appropriate modules for the drive and I can mount it, but I can't write to it as a normal user. Flickering desktop icons & unkillable kfmclient processes
Hello, Everyone :) Has anyone else heard of this problem? I've never had anything like this happen before. When I log into my user account, (sometimes, not always. There is no rhyme or reason as to when it does this) sometimes the desktop icons are flickering. I then proceed to open a terminal window for the purpose of running kpm to find out if there are any offending processes, and it takes a LOT longer than normal to even get a terminal window. When I finally am able to run kpm, (which takes a lot longer than normal to open up), it has multiple occurances of a process called "kfmclient". When I try to kill them, it gives me a message telling me that one of the processes I have chosen to kill has already dissapeared, but then none of the other "kfmclient" processes ever dies. Then (I can't remember which), after I logout and then log back in, or reboot, the problem is gone, and there are no occurances of "kfmclient", and the desktop icons are behaving correctly. I now have about 20 of these "kfmclient" processes running, and I have not started a single one of them. And the desktop icons are still flickering. Any help you can give me will be greatly appreciated, and I will gladly submit a bug report if necessary :) Oh yeah, apparently the "kfmclient" processes are running BEFORE the "kpm" program runs. Thanks in advance :) Steven P. Ulrick
Really wierd problem !!!!
Hello, everyone :) I realize this is going to sound like a joke, but I assure you, what I am about to tell you, I actually just saw on my desktop. I logged in to my user account and su'd into root to compile a newer version of ImageMagick. I left the terminal window iconified at the bottom of the screen and didn't think anything of it. (Remember, at this point, I had a window minimized that was su'd into root) Oh yeah, I have KDE as my default desktop, with 12 icons on it that I put there. Since I rarely log in directly into root, I never changed it's default setting from the one that you get after you install Red Hat 8, so root basically has Gnome as it's default desktop, with only the three icons on the desktop that Red Hat places there by default. Ok, here's where it gets strange: when I proceeded to close out all my windows that were open, and I got down to the desktop, I was rather suprised to see that I was looking at the root desktop! I was logged into KDE, and I was looking at a Gnome desktop. I clicked on terminal window icon in my taskbar (still KDE) and the window said I was logged in as Steve. When I clicked on the Home Directory icon on the Desktop (not the taskbar: The taskbar was KDE, the desktop was displaying as GNOME), it took me to /root, and I had all the permissions as if I was logged in as root. (By the way, by this time the terminal window that had been su'd into root was closed.) Oh yeah, the KDE menu at the bottom left was still KDE, not GNOME. When I logged out, and logged back in (into the same account that I was in when I experienced the events described above), everything was back to normal. In closing, I realize that I can run GNOME apps in KDE, and KDE apps in GNOME: that is not what we are dealing with here. I hope I described what happened clearly enough to make it clear that I was logged into KDE as a regular user, and I ended up with my root desktop, which is GNOME, with all the permissions and priveledges that root is entitled to. I'd love to report this as a bug, but I have no idea how to reproduce it. If you'd like me to report it like I described it above, please let me know.

Really wierd problem: Reproducible :)
Hello, Everyone :) I'm the guy that reported that "really wierd problem" where, when I was logged in as a regular user in KDE, I somehow ended up with root's GNOME desktop. Well, now I figured out how to reproduce it :) It goes like this: 1. Log into KDE as a regular user, or root, it doesn't matter. The important part is that you log into KDE. 2. Type "nautilus" in a terminal window, (I haven't tested this part, but I suspect that you could start nautilus any way you wanted) 3. Watch you KDE desktop turn into a GNOME desktop. The only reason why it went from my desktop to the root desktop in my last report, was because I opened Nautilus when I was su'd into root. But obviously, just running a GNOME application, and having it turn your KDE desktop into a GNOME desktop, was not the intention of Red Hat. I tried this the other way around, and opened Konqueror while I was logged into GNOME, and nothing unusual happened :) If I can undestand the process, I'm going to report this on Bugzilla, but I was just wondering if anyone else had this problem, and if you did, what you may have done to fix it :) Thanks in advance for your help :) Steven P. This original, innocuous incident has absolutely exploded into frustration, insults and name-calling, with Mr. Lowell now claiming that he has received hate mail privately from list members. Frankly, at this point, it doesn't matter whose fault it is. Mr. Lowell's postings, and replies to those postings, are now consuming a sizable portion of the total list traffic. This is unacceptable to those of us who use the RH mailing lists to actually get help. Feel free to chat with Mr. Lowell and explain simple etiquette to him or, failing that, please just have him removed from the list. As I said, it just doesn't matter whose fault it is. Mr. Lowell's presence has become unacceptably disruptive, and something should be done about it. A lot of us have work to do, and Mr. Lowell is simply getting in the way. latest on configuring NVIDIA under 2.5 kernel?
what is the latest on NVIDIA drivers for the 2.5 kernel? from a google search, i found www.minion.de/nvidia.html, from which one can download a patch: NVIDIA_kernel-1.0.4191-2.5.63.diff this *appears* to be a short 3-item patch against the NVIDIA src rpm Makefile. the first and third of those patches work, while the second fails. it seems easy enough to fix that glitch manually, but i'm nervous about doing that when i'm not sure why it wouldn't patch cleanly in the first place. is there a definitive solution involving NVIDIA GeForce2Go NVIDIA 1.0-4191 drivers 2.5.65 kernel (most likely involving a hacked NVIDIA driver, as the patch seems to suggest). rday -- Robert P.
