RH8 and VGA Cards

2003-03-04 Thread Galea Gilbert
Hi, I'm thinking of installing Redhat 8 at home. However my colleagues have
found some problems with VGA cards.

The HCL of RH8 does not include GeForce4. Did anybody of you install
GeForce4 (MX or Ti) on a RH8 box?

Thanks for your help
Gilbert

Not entirely accurate. Actually, there have been three different
releases of the Phoebe public beta, 8.0.92, 8.0.93, 8.0.94, which
means the latest Phoebe has not been out for a very long time. ;-)

Apart from that, phoebe-list would be the right list where to discuss
the beta.

Well, his mail headers say:

Converting Outlook PST files...

2003-03-04 Thread Neil Loffhagen
Hi,

Just had to mention this. Have just found a way of converting Outlook pst files so
they can then be imported into various Linux mail clients. It's libpst and can be
found at:

http://freshmeat.net/projects/libpst/?topic_id=31

Apologies if anyone thinks this off topic, but i remember seeing many requests as to
whether Outlook pst files can be imported and the answer given was usually no they
can't. Well I've been able to import my old pst file into Sylpheed okay. A bit long
winded in that you have to import each folder on it'd own. There may be a way to do a
mass import, but I've not discovered it yet.

Only problem is that it does not successfully deal with all attachments. But then it
does point that out.

Hope this helps someone.

Neil.

OK, as you can check at the X-Mailer Header, this is still Evolution
1.0.8. I made my home work, updating the rpm's via RH Network.
The version now seems to be the same found at the install CD.
I'll do the upgrade suggested today and give to the list some feedback
concerning the problem I found.

Re: System slow down

2003-03-04 Thread Renato Salles

My first bet is RAM card.
Can you open the CPU and just unplug one at time (how many?) the ram
cards until you get off the delay? Even with 32MB of RAM you can just
boot the system at runlevel 3.
I had sometimes this situation also, maybe a card not properly pluged,
or a oxydated one. In this case we use to clean the card with a rubber.

If you go to the "Help" menu, then select "About Plugins" do you see the
RealPlayer plugin in the list? If not, you might want to put the
RealPlayer files in /usr/lib/mozilla/plugins and see if that helps.

Follow the instructions in the readme about editing /etc/X11/XF86config

I just stick the IP addresses of the nameservers in my
/etc/resolv.conf file, like:

nameserver 123.237.003.1
nameserver 123.237.003.2

kernel config

2003-03-04 Thread Dave M
Hello

I typically use the rpm's to upgrade my kernel -
occasionally I customize it (add ntfs support) by
using one of the default .config files.
What scares me away from compiling my own kernel is
that I always mess up sound support. RH's default
.config Just Works. Based on an lsmod (from RH default
config kernel compile), I know that I need to add in
es1371, ac97_codec, and soundcore. What else am I
missing? How can I find out what else I need?

I know this isn't RH 8.0 specific, but I am using RH
8.0. :)
Thanks for the help.

I have done a top. Nothing is running.

What did top (or uptime) report as the system load average and CPU idle
percentage?

vmstat

   procs memoryswap io
system cpu
r b w swpdfree buff cache si sobibo
incs us sy id
 0 0 0 0 134564 14628 51832 0 0 3 1 517
27 0 0 100

That's not terribly helpful. You want to run vmstat is repeating output
so you can see what the system is doing while it runs:

vmstat 2

Look at the si, so, bi, bo, cs, and id columns as you try some simple
commands in another terminal.

Hi,
When you configure your network via NETWORK in the redhat menu, you have
a checkbox "Automatically obtain DNS information from provider".
I think this is what you need. It works for me.
If uncheck, it will normally take the DNS on the DNS tab entry.

You've used some incorrect terminology, but if I understand correctly, you
just want to combine all the data from your root (/) and home (/home)
partitions on to the root partition. To do this all you need to do is copy
the files over, preserving permissions. The commands to run would look
something like:
# init 1
# cd /
# mkdir /home.new
# cp -rp /home /home.new
# umount /home
# rmdir /home
# mv /home.new /home

You'll then want to update your file system table (/etc/fstab) to no longer
mount /dev/hda6 on /home, clear the data off /dev/hda6, and bring the system
back to a multiuser runlevel (such as 3), again using init.

You can also do the copying using an archival utility such as tar, but I don't
think that's any better than using cp as shown above.

Hope this helps

If the RedHat configuration works for compiling kernels, then just use
that for your sources. In your kernel source directory, copy
configs/kernel-.config to .config and then compile the
kernel as normal.

eg, in /usr/src/linux-2.4.18-24.8.0/
cp configs/kernel-2.4.18-i386.config ./.config
make xconfig
Then you can make your changes as you like (but don't touch the sound
options!) If you want to use one of your config files from an older
kernel, replace make xconfig with make oldconfig.

The local/remote IPs and nameservers on my system are logged by pppd.

Also, Matthew may want to see the file /usr/share/doc/initscripts-6.95/sysconfig.txt.
There is something about PEERDNS that he may be looking for.

The manual page for init(1) would answer this question. ;-)

It is used to bring the system down to single user mode. In simple cases,
this is the best way to ensure that files on the /home partition are not
being used so you can easily unmount /home.

On Linux 2.4 and higher, there are other ways of remounting partitions without
bringing the system down or unmounting the partition directly, but the way I
described should hopefully be the best and easiest for you.

How to fsck a disk

2003-03-04 Thread Graeme Jensen
After upgrading some packages using the red hat up2date command, it seems I
(Bhave somehow damaged the files and now I cannot log into my RH8.0 box. I
(Bget an error message saying I've been dropped into a shell and have to run
(Bfsck. I have no idea what this means and haven't been able to run the fsck
(Bprogram using any of the information found in the web pages that appear
(Bafter doing a google search. The man page lists various options, bit I
(Bhaven't been able to use the command either with or without options. Any
(Bideas?

like isp server names, nameserver, dns, ip address etc. etc.

I just stick the IP addresses of the nameservers in my
/etc/resolv.conf file, like:

nameserver 123.237.003.1
nameserver 123.237.003.2

Audigy 2 confirmation needed.

2003-03-04 Thread Mirabella, Mathew J
All.

Just looking for some confirmation that this supports audigy 2 as well.

I downloaded what i think is the latest drivers from cvs to support the audigy cards
with the following command.

cvs -d:pserver:[EMAIL PROTECTED]:/cvsroot/emu10k1 login
pressing enter for the password and then
cvs -z3 -d:pserver:[EMAIL PROTECTED]:/cvsroot/emu10k1 co emu10k1

After this, I got a package with a lot of stuff. in the docs dir in readme it says.

Card support
- Creative Sound Blaster Live! (all models)
- Creative Sound Blaster PCI 512
- Creative Audigy

I would like to confirm with someone that this actually also supports the audigy 2
card.

Mat.

mounting /home somewhere else

2003-03-04 Thread Mirabella, Mathew J
I have an rh8 installation with the / being mounted on /dev/hda5 and the only other
main partition apart from a 2gb swap is the /home on /dev/hdb6.
/ and /home are about 20gb each.
but now i want to use /dev/hdb6 for something else. how can i assign /home to be
mounted in /dev/hda5 that is, inside the /. what i want is to use one partition for
the lot (except the swap of course).
how can i now do this with a minimum of fuss and data loss.
