thanks.  yes someone did tell me about that one.  However, what is the situation if 
you don't know the ip addresses of the nameservers and/or you just want linux to 
automatically detect them for you when you dial up.

I just stick the IP addresses of the nameservers in my
/etc/resolv.conf file, like:

nameserver 123.237.003.1
nameserver 123.237.003.2
