Subject: RHCE and RHCT

Hi all :

I don't want to remain a Linux nitwit for the rest of my life , so I am
looking at getting RHCE certified , perhaps using RHCT as a
springboard. I don't have the money right now to afford the
expensive tuition fees , so I am looking for a Red Hat 8 book
to buy that I can use to develop a high degree of 'real world'
competency in Linux , an can also be used to effectively prepare
for the RH exams.

My problem is that most of these 'highly recommended'
books seem to focus on graphical desktops rather than on
the good old-fashioned command line. They also seem to
assume that Linux machines are all installed the same way
with the same packages. A classic example is an old
RHCE Sybex book I have that yarns on about the 'Linuxconf'
tool for configuring network cards , when most of my clients'
machines out there don't even have Linuxconf installed
because it is not a default package.

What I need is a complete Red Hat 8 book that shows you how to
solve real world problems and how to perform the same relevant
tasks on the command line by editing files as well as how to use
the GUI. I need a book that does not assume that I am already
a Linux genius and that I should know what to do with a tarball
installation once I have unzipped all of the files.

Out of all the people on this list that have forked out their hard earned
cash to kill another tree for furthering their education , can any of you
recommend a Red Hat Linux book or range of books that I can purchase
that teaches both command line and 'GUI' Linux from scratch , and takes
you right up to guru level in an orderly and sequential fashion ?
( An ebook or an ecourse would also be useful )

Regards , Jason

redhat8.0 on DELL Dimension 2350 - problems

2003-01-15 Thread Ross Macintyre
Hope someone can help.
Trying to install RedHat 8.0 on a DELL Dimension 2350 and I've
encountered 2 main problems already.
1st is the graphics: Doing a regular install failed when it got to the
part where it tries and configures the XF86 stuff. I think it said
something like invalid frequency or something. Anyway I decided to do
the install using 'text mode' which has gone ok except now when I run
redhat-config-xfree86 it fails.

2nd problem is the network: It failed to find the on-board ethernet
card even though it is enabled in the BIOS.

Any help much appreciated,

Ross

I am using Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux i686; en-US; rv:1.2)
Gecko/20021202. Both links play, but neither shows the control panel.

I took dove in and what should have been simple ended up being

Because of the round-about dependencies of mozilla-1.0.1, evolution-xx, and
plugger-4.07, I ended up having to rpm -e all of them. OK, not too painful.

However, rpm -e plugger looks like it is working and then rpm goes to sleep.
Evidently, rpm in RH 8 has got lots of problems. I kill -9 the process, rm -f
/var/lib/*_db_ to delete the rpm databases, and then rpm --rebuilddb. I
probablity have done that about a dozen times tonight until I chanced upon a
workaround.

For whatever reason, rpm -i or -e of plugger hangs corrupts my rpm databases
unless the --nodep option is used. So now I have,

[root@www root]# rpm -qa | grep -i plugger
plugger-4.0-17
[root@www root]# rpm -qa | grep -i mozilla
mozilla-nspr-1.2.1-0_rh8_xft
mozilla-1.2.1-0_rh8_xft
[root@www root]# rpm -qa | grep -i timi
timidity++-2.11.3-4
[root@www root]#

installed. Now the 3 test files give me music, but not the control panel (just
like you said above). Also, I have noticed that leaving the page or exiting
Mozilla does not always turn off the music. One has to kill the plugger and
timidity processes to turn it off.

It is difficult to understand why such an important tool as an internet
browser in todays environment acts as though it is in beta development.

I would be curious to know if your music always stops.

I put up a third test file too, http://www.mm-vanecek.com/card_embed3.html
just to make things even less complex.

Thank you for your help. I gotta go on the road for a few days. I guess I will
bang my head against this again later.

Regards, Mike.

PS: the 1.2.1 fonts are nice. Have you given any thought to going to 1.3a??

For the original two pages you gave, yes the music always stops. For
the last page (http://www.mm-vanecek.com/card_embed3.html) it does
not stop and I have to do a kill on timidity & plugger. FWIW, I am
using the same versions as you.

I'll wait on more stable versions of moz. While I enjoy the
occasional software challenge, I don't enjoy it when trying to read
my mail. :-)

Re: Mozilla & Sound

2003-01-15 Thread Mike Vanecek
FYI,

I had to rm /tmp/MCOP-userid to get things to work in a non-root account.

These two play, but do not display a control panel. They also stop the music
(close plugger) correctly when changing tabs or exiting.

http://www.mm-vanecek.com/card_embed.html
http://www.mm-vanecek.com/card_embed2.html

This one starts 2 plugger processes. Consequently, after exiting Mozilla, one
is left playing the music (must do a KILLALL plugger to stop). No control panel.

http://www.mm-vanecek.com/card_embed3.html

All this at mozilla bugzilla.

What do I need to install to get a pretty contol panel to pop up like it does
in IE5.5?

Thanks, Mike.

VPN questions

2003-01-15 Thread Tomas Larsson
I have a small home network with Win XP professional. They are connected to
Internet trough one RH8 box, acting as a firewall. On the RH box I am
running a samba and Apache.
Since I have dynamic IP I'm using DynDNS with ddclient. Now I want to
connect my laptop (WinXP home) from remote to one of my XP machines behind
the firewall. How do I do? It is my understanding that CIPE doesn't work on
XP, or is that old information. If so do I need one client on each XP
machine or is it enough to have one server on the RH box and one on the
laptop.

With best regards

Does XP have IPSEC? If so then connect to the Linux box using IPSEC
and then from there to the XP box. However, setting up the IPSEC
server side is not trivial. I don't know about the client since I
never use Windows :-)

Another alternative is to use the terminal server on XP. Either use
xinetd or ssh to forward port 3389 thru the Linux box to the to the
XP box. This is pretty simple to do. Xinetd doesn't enhance
security in any way but the secure shell method (V2!) with RSA
authentication is about as secure as it gets. However, the secure
shell trick requires a client that can do port forwarding and I don't
know of a free Windows client that has that feature (If anyone does,
let me know)

Somewhere in the up2dates (?) around Christmas time xlock has quietly
disappeared from my system. I've gone through the package manager and

xlock is very useful so I can keep my X-based email client (evolution)
up so the tons of email I receive overnight doesn't fill up my pop

Go to your /var/lib/tripwire/report directory. Do a ls -lrt. The last file
displayed is the latest tripwire report. Do a tripwire --update --twrfile
where filename is the file from the listing. After a few
seconds, the exceptions will be brought up in vim, where you can look
through them or edit them. Do a :x when you are satisfied and you are done.
Pretty easy.

for the kernel it's easy to do it for athlon:
1) we already ship such binaries, eg kernel-2.4.18-14.athlon.rpm
2) use rpm --rebuild --target=athlon kernel-2.4.18-14.src.rpm if you
want to waste 2 hours ;)

This should get you through it
1. If you right-click on the icon and select 'Properties' you will
notice a button labelled 'Select Custom Icon'. Click it and you will
notice that the default path is '/usr/share/pixmaps'. Close the two
dialog boxes, open a terminal and cd to this location.

2. Type 'gimp mozilla-mail-icon.gif' and assuming its installed gimp
will start and you will see the tiny icon in a window. Gimp takes
longer on the first run than successive runs.

3. Right-click on the tiny mail icon, and go to image -> Scale Image...
Select an X ratio of 3, or a measurement. The Y ratio should scale
accordingly if the 'chain' is not broken. Click ok.

4. Right-click on the image again, and go to File -> Save As and save it
somewhere (as, say mozilla-mail-icon-big.png) Simply changing the
extention to .png should be enough to make a png. If you don't have
write access to /usr/share/pixmaps, save it to your home dir.

5. Quit the gimp, and go back to the 'Select Custom Icon' (see 1.)
Browse to where you saved the file and select the new icon. Now it
should behave as you first expected.

That did it; a Mozilla Mail icon properly sized! Thanks Iain.

Graphics are simply not my strong suit. While I knew how to find and
select icons, until now, the possibility of resizing them was never
something I'd even considered doing. Back in the days of Windows 3.1, I
fouled something up atrociously with Paint and, once burned, the child
avoids the flame. I have the k3b CD burning program on my desktop and
the icon for it is overly large. I think I'll try my hand at resizing
that one as well.
Thanks for the introduction to gimp!

You'll need to install the SRPM, then edit the spec file (and possibly
even the Makefiles?) and make the changes there. rpmbuild --target
doesn't really accomplish as much as I'm guessing you want to do in this
category and most RPMs are compiled with -O2 -march=i386 -mcpu=i686 by
default, except the kernel and glibc.

There was a good discussion about this topic right around the time
psyche was released, or just before. Search the mailing list archives
for messages from Thomas Dodd and Mike Harris, and I believe they were
talking about XFree86 optimizations at the time. IIRC, Thomas actually
did some experimentation in this area

Re: list users

2003-01-15 Thread Rui Miguel Seabra
Hi, You can do it in several ways...

The first one is very simple, but using awk will give you some more
power. It all rather depends on what you need.

To get only the user names (meditate [man] over this commands to do yet
more):

* cut -d : -f 1 < /etc/passwd

* awk 'BEGIN {FS=":"} {print $1}' < /etc/passwd

or, if you want only the 'normal' users:

  awk 'BEGIN {FS=":"} $3>=500 {print $1}' < /etc/passwd

etc... etc... etc...

Hope it helps, Rui

HylaFAX _is_ your best bet. As for getting to work, try asking on the HylaFAX

I humbly point to the single quotes around normal.

I believe that the Dimension 2350 has the integrated Intel video built
in. Is that the card you are using or have you added a separate video
card? If you are using the built-in Intel video, I don't think that the
version of XFree86 that we shipped in 8.0 supports that graphics
adapter. The latest XFree86 should support that card, so you may be
interested in trying the Phoebe beta to see if your card works with the
latest XFree86.

My wife has a Dimension 4500S that has the same graphics board and we
wound up putting a Radeon 7500 card in the machine so that RHL 8.0 would
work.

I found that the packages supplied for xemacs in RH 8.0 were so old
that I couldn't save email messages in gnus. After updating apel life
became much better. I then upgraded all the packages and updated the
xemacs from 21.4.8 to 21.4.11.

With Red Hat Linux 8.0, you can use 'redhat-config-securitylevel' which
will allow you to configure the iptables firewall scripts.

Re: RHCE and RHCT

That should be great to be an RHCE-certified. But if Linux is your
*passion*, more than just a way to have a thicker wallet in an
immediate future; then I would rather suggest you to really get dirty
and to try LFS, Linux From Scratch. This means that you will build your
own Linux system suitable to your purposes. Like, why waste a 1GB if a
150MB is already sufficient for what we need in, say, running a certain
machine to be a server only? So, LFS will teach us about "minimalism" in
Linux.

The manual is free from http://www.linuxfromscratch.org/

With things like LFS, not only that you'll stop being a Linux "nitwit",
but you'll get to the very core idea of Linux itself: FREEDOM OF CHOICE.
You decide what you need, and you make it yourself. However, without an
enough degree of *passion* & curiousity, you may soon find that Linux
ala LFS is only for "hobbyist"...:(

Yet of course: for a practical purpose and acknowledgement from your
superficial & un-Linux-minded would-be-bosses, getting an RHCE or RHCT
is still a very helpful way to make this passion at once a way to make a
living.

I would try
make mrproper oldconfig dep bzImage modules modules_install.

I would think you have something in your configuration that it does not

So try stock configuration compilation.

RE: More ext3 partition resizing issues (SOLUTION)

2003-01-15 Thread John BouAntoun
Okay guys here comes the solution.

It was really relatively trivial. I decided to reinstall grub on my linux partition,
so all I had to do was boot into 'linux rescue' off the cd, then 'chroot
/mnt/sysimage' (just to be safe) and then simply run grub stage2 natively like so:

#> grub
grub#> setup (hd0,5)

this reinstalled grub stage1 on the bootsector of hda6 (where my linux partition is).

I then re-peeled the bootsector of /dev/hda6 and did a binary diff, it was different
to my post-resizing bootsector, so I used this new peeled bootsector to chain load
GRUB from the WIN2k boot loader, and all was well.

Thanks for all your help

Re: Firewall

2003-01-15 Thread jdow
"rpm -e ipchains" might be a good start. Then turn to iptables and do not
look back. If you want to leave ipchains on your system for whatever silly
reason you may have (trust me, it is silly even if it doesn't seem that way)
then "service ipchains stop" should turn the trick. Leave it stopped. Do not
look back. Look to the resources mentioned on my prior rock carving.

(This is a convert from iphains speaking. The ipchains implementation just
doesn't work at all well on 2.4 kernels. It is an emulation that uses the
iptables facilities. It takes a modicum of learning. But the learning is
well worthwhile.)

ghosts in the machine (or just another UTS?)

2003-01-15 Thread anthony baldwin
I tried to install kcreatecd and was told there was a missing dep, mpg123
Now, I thought that I had installed that, so I found the tar for it in my /home and
extracted it again and installed it.
Then I tried to install kcreatecd from rpm again, and I got the same message, that
mpg123 was "unlocatable". (Same msg about libvorbisfile.so.0).
Is this a UTS bug?
Also, I have installed j2re-1_4_1 (from sun) about a dozen times, (I get a message
stating that it IS installed, so I have removed and re-installed, even) and still
can't seem to run java stuff. (java -jar swingman.jar gives nothing, etc.) AND on top
of that, I finally got around to updating my OO.o to 1.0.1, and the setup said that
java was not available.
Another UTS bug?

No... RPMS can not satisfy dependencies from source installed software. If an
rpm has a dep, you must install an rpm to fix it.

Java rpm installs to a pretty funky location. /lib/java/version/foo or
something. rpm -ql $javarpm to see where it puts the files, then update your
path and javapath accordingly. There is a nice little howto found here:

 No such file or directory
2. File system error.
 Filename: /sbin/accton
 No such file or directory

Why would you need to build Nautilus? It's installed by default (from an
RPM), and is the default Gnome file manager.

The line you are looking for is:
id:5:initdefault:

Change '5' to '3' and off you go.

Edit /etc/inittab, and look for the line that says something like this:

Change the 5 to a 3, and reboot.

The above method will update the database for changed files (violations)
only. To the best of my knowledge, it is not possible to deal with the
file system errors using this method. Files which simply don't exist must
be edited manually in the policy file. Once you have a correct policy
file, the method above is fine for approving file system modifications in
the future.
When I get a report following a package upgrade (for example), I can
review the changes, and then just run:
tripwire --update -a -r /path/to/twreportname
and enter the site pass phrase. Done.

However, if I remove a package
The file system errors occur until I fix the policy file and update the
database.

I'd be thrilled if someone proves me wrong... ;)

Sorry, Michael. I see the same behavior that you do. Wish it were as
easy as the previous poster mentioned. :)

Tom, the man pages drove me nuts and I gave up on tripwire for a while.
I ended up needing it, and this time I found the Tripwire section in the
RedHat 8.0 reference guide.

Check out:

If you still need some help, please email me offline and I will be glad
to help. You have helped me a lot and I would like to return the favor.

The AWK programmers are going to flame me for this, but..
AWK and sed go real hand-in-hand in writing scripts. However,
since Perl came along, it has combined the two along with LOTS
of other neat toys making it a good replacement.
If you want to learn a VERY useful scripting language, I'd start
with Perl.

Might want to look at something like Tripwire to monitor stuff like that.
It's pretty good at watching for things that should not, or rarely change
and gives you a warning. May not stop them from getting in, but
may alert you so you can stop them before they use your box for nasty
stuff.

Flash Player Confusion

2003-01-15 Thread John Lowell
Once I'd gotten Red Hat 8.0 installed last Fall and had started to
browse with Mozilla, I'd occasionally notice those strange blue figures
on some site that, once you clicked on them, would notify you that you
needed Flash Player to view the page properly. I lived with these odd
figures until yesterday when I determined I'd install Flash Player and
be done with it. Via Help -> Plugins in the Mozilla menu bar, I
eventually reached the place to obtain
install_flash_player_6_linux.tar.gz and downloaded it. I unpacked it
according to the ReadMe instructions and typed ./flashplayer-installer
to run the installer. Things moved along as expected until the
installation asked me for a destination directory. I gave back
/usr/bin/mozilla, precisely where Mozilla is located, but the installer
kept repeating the question. I'm confused; should I be installing
somewhere else?

Mozilla plugins go in /usr/lib/mozilla (or /usr/lib/mozilla-).
/usr/bin/mozilla is an executable file, not a directory.

The default Mozilla directory is /usr/lib/mozilla-1.0.1/, and plugins
are installed in the plugins subdirectory:
/usr/lib/mozilla-1.0.1/plugins/. That's where you want Flash installed.

I use it at home and as a backup to Checkpoint at work.

Dave Sherman & Michael Wardle,

I doubt if I could have had more prompt help under any circumstances.
Thanks to you both for your responses.

Dave & Michael,

I just attempted the Flash Player installation again. I proceeded
according to Hoyle and reach the point where an installation directory
is requested. I entered /usr/lib/mozilla-1.0.1/plugins/ at the prompt
and got back the following output:

Warning: Please enter a valid installation path

Where do we go from here? I mean the program moves along fine until it
reaches this point. I've checked the Nautilus File Manager and the
directory /usr/lib/mozilla-1.0.1/plugin/ exists alright. I'm lost.

Do you have rights to install in .../mozilla-1.0.1/plugins?
Are you logged in as root or "normal" user when you perform the
installation? If I'm not mistaken, you'll need to be root to perform
installation.

Hi Bob,

I logged in as jlowell, not as root, but first entered su - in the
terminal before typing the needed commands. That should do it, should it
not?

How to configure applications to use CUPS ?

2003-01-15 Thread Cedric Chausson
Hello all,

I have installed CUPS and it works, I can print a test page from CUPS.
But how do I tell applications to use CUPS ?

Is there a central place where I can tell all applications to use CUPS ?

For example in gedit, in the print screen printer tab there are two
options :
	Gnome default printer (PS, lpr)
Manage printers (which is greyed out)

How do I get gedit to use CUPS ? Where can I change the Gnome default
printer ?

Thanks in advance,

Re: Flash Player Confusion

2003-01-15 Thread bob
John,

Logging in as su - should have done the trick. I installed by
downloading tar ball and copying files to /plugins manually. My version
didn't have an installation script. Maybe there's something wrong with
the install script? Got Flash 6 tar ball from:

http://www.macromedia.com/shockwave/download/download.cgi?P1_Prod_Version=ShockwaveFlash&P5_Language=English

Clear install instructions in the README file

Good luck,

Bob
