Re: Sangean WFR-28 Internet Radio Again

2013-07-29 Thread Donald L. Roberts
Although I certainly enjoy reading Dane's reviews of various radios, I
just have to comment that my iPhones are great as internet radios.
Granted, they need external amplification and speakers unless you are
willing to listen through phones, but it is so easy to connect the
iPhone either via blue tooth or via the 3.5 mm. jack to other components.

All of the internet radios I hear about have accessibility issues, some
more than others. As I see it, the shortest distance between two points
is a straight line, and for me the iPhone represents that straight line.

You may need sighted assistance for this, you go into the Help menu of
the radio and obtain the access code from there.

I initially thought that the Access code might be the Mac address of
the radio which can be gotten from your Rooter but this didn't work.

The access code is 7 characters long.

If I find another way of getting the code then I'll let the list know.

Hi!

1 thing I forgot to mention, this radio comes with a CD ROM
containing accessible versions of the owners manual, I found this to
be of great help.

Bluetooth Radios was Sangean WFR-28 Internet Radio Again

2013-07-29 Thread Dane Trethowan
No doubting that for 1 moment, you're talking to someone who has been
using IOS devices for 3 years and has now taken up using Android devices
and will - if ever they become accessible - start using Windows Mobile
devices .

Have you considered using Airplay with your Radio Apps on your IOS
devices for even better sound.

One could argue of course that using a radio such as the Sangean WR-28
with an IOS device is next to pointless given that you can purchase very
good radio Apps such as oOtunes for IOS and I take that point but to me?
Well, there's something about a separate portable or tabletop or Hi-Fi
radio where the iPhone controls it, just like say a radio with a remote
controller.

Speaking of radios, has anyone seen the new Sangean Bluetooth models?
They transmit their audio to bluetooth headphones, speakers and so on,
wodnered how long it would be before we saw those come into the market
place.

And as a final footnote to my previous reply .

Not everyone has an iPhone and its at this point where the Sangean WR28
comes into its own, like the Logitech U.E. Radio, Squeezebox series etc
the WR28 can be controlled via a web browser.

Putting Cassettes on the computer

2013-07-29 Thread Kris Hickerson
Hi All,

I purchased a little cassette player with a USB connection for putting some
casettes on my computer.

The software supplied is Audacity. It works ok except there are two
problems. The first I can deal with after a little exploring. What is
happening that that as soon as I connect the USB JAWS stops talking. Well,
I figured out that JAWS and Audacity are both fighting for my single sound
card. So, now I go to the record button and then connect the player, press
record and then press play on the player. I can then moniter the player to
hear what song is being recorded and when it turns off at the end I just get
out of Audacity and JAWS resumes talking. It's a little awkward but it
works.

The second problem is that once I have the casette transferred it is simply
one long file with no markings between songs, so you can't select just one
song at a time. Is there a way to put CD markings between songs so you can
move from one song to another? Can I do this with Audacity?

I don't want to bother to learn a new specialized music program because once
I have these tapes copied to the computer then I can put them on my Stream
or Apex or whatever so I won't need to mess with this again.

 Do you have any sugestions?

Thanks much.

Kris

It has been so long since mine got connected, that I'm not sure, but
yes, you do need to connect it either to an appropriate surround
receiver or to the tvf hdmi. It does work with voice over, and I
believe it is possible to turn voice over on by pressing the largest
button on the remote 3 times, once the apple tv is properly connected
and turned on. When I got mine, that wasn't possible, so I had to have
sighted help to go into the menus and get voice over turned on.

Re: Apple TV

2013-07-29 Thread Steve Jacobson
Gary,

Have you gotten it connected with your WI FI network? If so, what kind of
problems are you running into? It is good to get an Apple-ID, and I think some
of its functionality depends on you having an Apple-
ID. I do not know if that ID acts as a gateway into YouTube and Podcasting or
not, but it might. You do not need an iPhone to get an Apple ID, though. If
you use iTunes, you already have an Apple ID.
Since you can get an Apple ID with an iPhone, that might be what was being
thought of, but as stated, you don't need an iPhone to get an Apple ID. It is
very nice to have access to iTunes with the Apple TV,
so creating an iTunes account when you get an Apple ID is also a good idea.
There are a lot of inexpensive movies and TV shows to rent on iTunes, but there
is also some free stuff. Using the keyboard for
searching can be done with the little remote, but it is much easier with a
BlueTooth keyboard. This is something else to consider. The Apple TV supports
something called Air Play that lets other apple devices,
iPhones, iPods, etc., play music through the apple TV. This is handy but
certainly not a must to enjoy the Apple TV.

Best regards,

Steve Jacobson

Re: Apple TV

2013-07-29 Thread Steve Jacobson
Gary,

You need to plug the Apple TV through an HDMI plug to an HD TV. If your cable
box has an HDMI input that can be routed to your TV, that might work, I don't
know. Cable boxes I have seen have HDMI
OUT to go to a TV, and that will not work. You may need to get some help there
from someone who knows what equipment you have.

Once you get the Apple TV connected to a tv and to a sound source, probably
your TV speakers, then you need to get voiceover turned on. I believe that the
first time you start the apple TV, it will speak a
prompt to turn on voiceOver using the little remote control. If it has already
been turned on, you may have missed the prompt, but I believe there is a
shortcut to turning it on with the remote. Once you have
voiceover going, you will need to explore the menus some. You will next need
to get it connected to your WI-FI network because everything you watch on it
comes through the internet. I believe that you will
next need to enter an Apple-ID and password into the unit.

You might try doing some Google searches to see if anyone has instructions for
blind persons. The PDF user's guide is all right but some of the steps are
shown in pictures. It is hard to know how much more to
try to say without knowing your setup. If you bought it at an Apple Store,
they are pretty good to answer questions as well, although this can vary.

Best regards,

Steve
