USB mixer question?

2008-02-05 Thread George Day
Can anyone please tell me whether using a USB mixer for internet radio
is significantly different to using an ordinary mixer?

Replay Music 3.20 beta news continued

2008-02-05 Thread petrakigianos-giasou
Replay Music 3.20 beta update. The control tab shortcut does
work within the settings dialog box but shift control tab
shortcut does not. The control tab will jump you to the next tab
properties and all in PC cursor mode. The shift control tab will
not land you in the previous tab properties. For example if you
are in the splitting tab/page and presses the shortcut shift
control tab you will not land in the INPUT tab properties but
instead will remain in the splitting tab properties. But using
control tab shortcut will jump you through all 4 tabs: input,
splitting, proxy, output and all using JAWS PC cursor mode. This
was not the case before. It's a big time improvement. Eliminates
having to use the JAWS cursor.

He may fix the shift control tab to work for us too. I see a bug
there when using shift control tab so I asked him to try and fix
it.

Re: USB mixer question?

2008-02-05 Thread Bob Seed
I would suggest that perhaps a USB mixer would be better, as it is
specifically designed for computer use, and hopefully the issues of
grounding would be addressed. Some of the cheaper mixers are not properly
shielded, and as a result you end up with a bad recording that may have a
hum, and it is also possible to pick up interference from other sources such
as radio stations. It is for this reason that it is highly recommended that
you use shielded cables and proper grounding where ever possible. Just my
two cents worth. .

Re: Error Msg when burning cds.

2008-02-05 Thread Kathy and Tom
Hi Arthur. Thanks so much for the heads up re the lens cleaner. I'll keep
that in mind. Unfortunately, I think I may have to get a new drive. I'm
going to try and burn some data disks in a few minutes and see what happens.

Btw. I'm using Premere Easy C D Creator. The highest speed it will burn is
40 X. I could only purchase 48 X c ds. They're now coming out with 52 x
speed c ds. I can't burn 52 x cds with my burner or the software I'm using.
Will the 52 X speed cds play on an M P 3 player after the disks have been
finalized? Thanks bunches!

cleaning records

2008-02-05 Thread Randy Tijerina
friends, I'd like to ask, what's the best way to remove scratches off of a
record?
I've heard two different things. Alcohol and or water.
i don't think anyone in their right mind will use water.
can someone help on this?

RE: cleaning records

2008-02-05 Thread Walter Ramage
Hi Randy. If you are referring to vinyl then you can't remove scratches,
you can only limit their effects. You should never use water when cleaning
vinyl. this produces a sludge that when dry hardens and makes the problem
worse. I suggest that you go to a specialist Hi-fi dealer who will suggest
a liquid cleaner that will be effective but you need to use it with a very
fine brush or velvet cloth. When I was using vinyl a brand that was
expensive but very effective was "Discwasher". Walter.

2008-02-05 Thread DJ DOCTOR P
High Randy,
You're right, you don't want to use water to clean your records.
All water will do is make the dust stick to the grooves.
When that happens, it's a lot of hard work to remove the dust from the
record.
Use a slightly damp cloth that's been damped with alcohol.
That should do the trick for you.
My best regards!
  John.

Re: cleaning records

2008-02-05 Thread Bob Seed
This topic has been covered before, however for the benefit of all here it
is once again. .

Care Of LPs, 45s And Other Vinyl Records

Most LPs and singles released after the early fifties are composed
ofpolyvinyl materials and are more durable than it's predecessors.
Whencleaning vinyl records, I recommend a 50/50 solution of isopropyl
alcohol(70% by Vol.) or denatured alcohol (fewer impurities) and filtered
ordistilled water (again, fewer impurities). A few claim that alcohol
isdamaging to vinyl... 70% or more by volume strength and continual contact
fora long period of time, maybe... but not in the recommended dilution.
Alcoholis water soluble and leaves little or no residue. A mild detergent,
such asJohnson and Johnson Baby Bath, can be used in small amounts with
water withno rinsing necessary. Photo Flo is a wetting agent used in
photography tohelp reduce water spots and marks during the rinsing of
negatives. A coupleof drops in the above solutions also help in reducing
residual deposits. The solution should be applied with a soft, clean
washcloth, wiping in acircular motion with the grooves. Rinse the cloth
often in the solution andreplace with a fresh mixture when needed. I
recommend thoroughly drying therecord with a soft, clean towel... this
further reduces residue left behind.Try not to get the labels wet.Dirty
covers and labels are best left alone. If the cover is laminated orglossy, a
damp towel can be used... A mild furniture polish does nicely too.Marks or
writing on the cover may be able to be removed with a rubber eraser.Lighter
fluid (naphtha) or even hair spray works great on pen marks.Permanent marker
can be removed by marking over it with a dry erase marker, then wipe with a
dry cloth... It really works! Stickers, labels, tape andsuch can be removed
by heating the area with a hair dryer. The heat breaksdown the adhesive and
makes it softer and easier to remove sticker and allwithout a great risk of
damaging the cover or sleeve. Sticker residue can beremoved with most
citus-based cleaners or lighter fluid (naphtha). Again, Istress that these
only work well on glossy covers. Matte finish cover andlab colel marks are
usually set. You stand a chance of removing part of the printoror and making
the situation worse.

Replay AV in the news

2008-02-05 Thread petrakigianos-giasou
Replay AV is nominated as Best Software for the Blind and
Visually Impaired

San Anselmo, CA- January 28, 2008 - Replay AV was the only
mainstream software nominated in the Best Software category in
the Blind Bargains 2007 Access Awards this week. The other
software nominated in the best software category was
specifically designed for blind users. Although, Replay AV
didn’t win the award the program’s inclusion in the top four
Best Software category is a testament to the efforts Applian
Technologies has put into making their products accessible to
the blind.
“The fact that a mainstream software product such as Replay AV
was nominated amongst programs specifically for the blind shows
me the commitment to equal access exhibited by Applian
Technologies.” Said J.J. Meddaugh, Webmaster for
BlindBargains.com “Other companies should follow their lead and
work to include the blind and visually impaired when producing
and distributing software.”

About a year ago a blind forum was established
(http://www.freelists.org/list/blindreplay) to help blind users
understand how to use Replay AV and other Applian Products.
Petro T. Giannakopoulos, the forum’s unofficial monitor and avid
computer user, has created regular podcasts
(http://blindreplay.blogspot.com/2008/01/mp3-tutorials-on-replay-av-8.html)
that demonstrate how to use the different features of Replay AV
and other Applian programs like Replay Media Catcher, their
streaming flash video recorder and Replay Music, their streaming
music recorder. Mr. Giannakopoulos also acts as a beta tester
for Applian to test any new product developments or enhancements
to ensure that the programs work well with his screen reader and
offer easy keyboard shortcuts. Additionally, a member of
Applian’s staff also monitors the forum to make sure that the
company is staying abreast of any accessibility issues that
their programs might have. Any recommendations from the forum
are immediately relayed back to the developers so they can fix
any accessibility issues that may arrive.

The members of the blind forum predominantly like to use Replay
AV to capture their favorite streaming radio shows. But
interestingly, the blind users also use Replay AV to capture
streaming video – like the playlists you would find on YouTube.
The blind users like to listen to the videos just like they like
to listen to their favorite radio shows.

“Replay AV has brought a lot of enjoyment to my life,” said
Petro. “Applian is a great company that really cares about
making their products accessible to the blind user. Bill
Dettering is a fantastic CEO and the overall company is a
fantastic group.”

“Our programs have always been about helping people get more
enjoyment out of streaming media,” said Bill Dettering. “We are
thrilled that our products have developed a loyal following in
the blind community.”

Replay A/V and all other Applian products are available for
download and immediate purchase from the Applian Technologies
web site at http://www.applian.com. Free demos are available
for all the products. The programs require a PC running
Windows.

About Applian Technologies
Applian Technologies was started by Bill Dettering in 2000 with
the launch of Replay Radio, a program Bill created to combat the
boredom of his long commute down to Silicon Valley every day.
Replay Radio allowed Bill to listen to his favorite radio
programs whenever he wanted. Now, seven years after the launch
of Replay Radio, Applian is recognized as the global leader in
recording software. Other popular Applian products include the
Audio Video Streaming Capture Suite, Replay AV, Replay Media
Catcher, Replay Music, Replay Converter, and Replay Screencast.

cleaning records

2008-02-05 Thread Bob Seed
The following recipes are for a 4 liter (1 gallon) solution unless otherwise
stated.

  Distilled water Alcohol Detergent
1 part 1 part isopropyl none
1 part 1 part isopropyl a drop of Triton X-100
  1 quart (~ 1 liter) 1/2 quart denatured 10 drops Photoflo
3 parts 1 part denatured a few drops
3 parts 1 part rubbing a few drops
4 parts 1 part ethanol some (Genie in the Bottle)

  Laura Dearborn's recipe
  Distilled water Alcohol Detergent
  3 parts 1 part isopropyl 1 drop Triton X-114 or Monolan 2000

  Don Roderick's recipe
  Distilled water Alcohol Detergent
  4 parts 1 part isopropyl (91%) 7-8 drops dishwashing detergent w/o
additives

  Keith Monks's recipe (TAS)
  Distilled water Alcohol + Detergent
  1 part 1 part denatured alcohol (90% ethyl, 9.5% methyl, .5% pyridine)
.

  Jonathan Scull's recipe (Stereophile)
  Distilled water Alcohol Detergents
  3 parts 1 part NON-lanolin isopropyl 10 drops Photo-Flo + 10 drops
"Direct" tile cleaner

I know there are more "solutions" but these are just meant to be starting
points and/or examples.

After washing the record with one of these fluids it is wise to rinse it
with pure distilled water. This way any remaining particles of dirt will be
washed away from the grooves.
Then you can dry the record using a soft chamois leather or a soft cotton
cloth.
Esoteric drying can be done by clamping the record to a drill and turning it
at the highest speed possible. Seriously :-)

The bottom line is: keep your records as clean as possible.

Re: cleaning records

2008-02-05 Thread DJ DOCTOR P
High Bob,
Early yesterday morning, I discovered a website that sails records as well
as CD's and cassette tapes.
Sense records are cheaper then CD's, I will start collecting them again.
I know it's old school, but it will make my job as a DJ a whole lot easier
to bare and do.
I will be spending these for a lot of people on a 2 day/weekly bases.
These cleaning solutions that you spoke of, where can I go to get them?
Thanks.
  John.
