Re: m4a

2006-03-17 Thread Terese Ann Goren
it has been my experience that when you download something from
ITunes you can't play it on any other player on your system unless
you burn it onto a cd and then rip it back on there. The licensing
is very proprietary. As for m4a format yes, winamp does play that type.

Paul, I have a Real Tech AC97 onboard sound card in this Medion desktop
computer which was purchased approximately three years ago.

I have been absolutely delighted not only with the quality of the sound
from this card but also with the fact that the microphone and aux
volumes are more than adequate, and also with the fact that no hiss is
introduced into the mike circuit by the sound card.

Re: SoundRecorderFreeSoftware!

2006-03-17 Thread Donald L. Roberts
My only quarrels with Goldwave are:

1. You cannot read the VU meter when recording; or at least, on my
system the reading is usually 0. And,

2. There is no true scrub feature.

Other than these two, it is a super program. In fact, I have both
Goldwave and Total Recorder and use each, but for different purposes.
For example, I record NLS books at four times normal speed and then use
Goldwave's playback rate modification feature to make at play at the
correct speed.

Re: Re: real tech sound quality issues

2006-03-17 Thread Bobcat
My first driver update was from HP and was specific to their motherboards.
The second was a general Realtek ac'97 update. I found it here:
http://downloads-zdnet.com.com/Realtek-AC-97-WDM-Driver-Windows-98-Me-2000-XP-2003-/3000-2120_2-10501051.html?tag=lst-5-5

No bass and treble? Check out the equalizer in Multi-Channel Sound Manager.
Also check out any equalizers that may be running in your playback software.
Maybe the gain in an equalizer is turned up to high.

RE: SoundRecorderFreeSoftware!

2006-03-17 Thread Rick Alfaro
Don,

If you want scrubbing, check out WavePad from
http://nch.com.au/wavepad/masters.html

WavePad is actually free unless you want or need the more advanced features
of WavePad Masters edition. The free version does a lot though so don't be
fooled by the free part of it. The free version definitely does scrubbing
with your arrow keys, and a lot more. Give it a try. This program in my
opinion does not fit into the "you get what you pay for" category. If you
want batch processing, regions, and multiple book marks, then you might want
to pay for the Masters edition. The free trial download has all of the
Masters edition enabled for 14 days and then turns into the free version.

Hi,

I use an Olympus WS320. it has 1GNB of flash memory and can record WMA at
64kbps stereo for 35 hours. Although not fully accessible, its buttons beep
in ways that it is very easy to learn to use the unit.

2006-03-17 Thread Lois Goodine
You have to plug the earphone plug into the earphone jack on your soundcard.
I have a cable running from that jack up to the table on which my computer
sits. (My tower is on the floor.) SO I can just plug into the the
appropriate plug. HTH.

A new public domain sound editor

2006-03-17 Thread Matthew Bullis
Here's an item which was posted to the blind Cool Tech list which should be
very interesting.
Matthew

Hello all,
I have written a new sound-editing application called Audio Magic. It is an
alternative to Sound Forge 8, but it is in the public domain and it is
freeware. It does not yet have all of Sound Forge's features, but we are
only on the very first beta release at this point, and I would like all of
your feedback on how I could improve the interface. I am a JAWS user myself,
so I have tried to make the interface to the application as accessible as
possible. You will not need JAWS scripts to make use of the program's
features; the program will communicate it's information to JAWS without any
other files needing to be installed. This program is also a lot faster than
Sound Forge in terms of saving files, etc. It includes features such as
changing pitch, reverb, noise reduction (coming in next beta), etc. It can
currently save in MP3, WMA, OGG and Real Media formats. More support is
coming soon and people will be able to write plug-ins to support other
formats if they wish. If you would like to try it out, you can go to
http://audiomagic.roachhost.com
and download the latest beta version from there. You can read the user's
guide and other documentation after you've got the program installed.
Documentation will also be available online by the time the final product is
released. If you feel any changes need to be made to the documentation, let
me know that as well. Hope you all enjoy the program.
Thanks,
Daniel

Re: follow up earphones and microphone

2006-03-17 Thread Lois Goodine
No. on the back of your tower there are jacks on your soundcard into which
you connect or plug things such as your talking screen reader, speakers,
headphones, etc. If the earphones don't work, you may have to go into your
volume settings and raise the headset volume to %100.

modifying a preset in Total Recorder

2006-03-17 Thread Larry Higgins
Could any of my fellow TR users please tell me if it is possible to
modify a preset in the recording source and parameters dialog box? I
guess it is no real problem to just delete a preset and start over,
but if I already have a suitable name, and all other settings are
satisfactory, I don't really want to have to delete all that work
just to make a small change. I know, I'm probably just overlooking
the obvious, but it doesn't look too obvious to me right now .

Thanks,

Larry

Beware: AudioMagic, public domain sound editor software...

2006-03-17 Thread Darrell Shandrow
Hello everyone,

I would urge you all to be very careful when downloading and installing new
software, especially if claims are being made that might sound too good to be
true. At the same time, I don't want to be the guy who wrongly trashes
someone's reputation. I'll just lay out the facts and everyone will decide for
themselves:

* Fantastic claims of a new accessible sound editor may be too good to be true.
* The e-mail address is "jokerdog" on the fastmail.fm domain.
* The domain name is roachhost.com.
* The software has already been reported to have crashed one person's computer!

In late November of last year, I accepted a person's claim that he had found a
way to defeat Google's visual verification to make it accessible to blind
users. I downloaded and ran an executable file that promptly trashed not only
my computer, but also all the data on a backup drive connected to another
computer on our network here in the Accessibility Command Center! Watch out my
friends!

Hi Rob,

I fear you'll find that file not to be the only one missing. My only remedy
to the Google trojan was a complete reformat and reload of everything; even
my backups were destroyed!

[Blind Access Journal] Red Alert: Don't Let Audio Magic Cast An Evil Spell on Your Computer!

2006-03-17 Thread Darrell Shandrow
Hello everyone,

I would urge you all to be very careful when downloading and installing new
software, especially if claims are being made that might sound too good to be
true. It seems a direct threat to blind computer users may be "in the wild".
Please review the facts listed below and avoid this Audiomagic trojan horse
program at all costs.

a.. Fantastic claims of a new accessible sound editor may be too good to be
true.

b.. The e-mail address is "[EMAIL PROTECTED]".

c.. The domain name is roachhost.com.

d.. The software has already been reported to have crashed several computers
by removing critical Windows system files!

e.. We at Blind Access Journal received thousands of worthless blank e-mails
from roachhost.com in December of last year.

In late November of last year, I accepted a person's claim that he had found a
way to defeat Google's visual verification to make it accessible to blind
users. I downloaded and ran an executable file that promptly trashed not only
my computer, but also all the data on a backup drive connected to another
computer on our network! Watch out my friends!

Hello, so the excecutable program file has a virus in it? I didn't try the
software yet. Perhaps we should e-mail the author of the program.
Thanks a lot.

Re: Beware: AudioMagic, public domain sound editor software...

2006-03-17 Thread djc
I'd like to ad here that I just downloaded this software but it came in way
to fast so I think it could be a Virus so I'd say bookmark his page and
drop him email to see if he is actually working on a piece of software but
I having read that it's crashed a computer I'll install it on a virtual
drive here and see what the story is. I'll report right here if it's false
software or whatever but Please be careful. I have several machines here
and since I image my drives I can test software and let you know the truth.
Many of the older
members of this list will know my main menu reviews. I build my machines
from scratch and I install all the tools I need to test any software to see
if it's accessible for the Blind Community. I'll check this all out for
you.

I ran it through my virus checker and it came back with no virus found but
that doesn't mean anything. 2 things tipped me off as to Jokerdog's
Identity. The Jokerdog I know is a blind person and I honestly believe that
he would never do such a thing. I don't believe he even knows programming.
This guy signed his message Daniel and I have no idea who this person is
but perhaps he's sighted. I'm sorry that people have run in to trouble and
this is a good reason to backup your machines so you can roll back incase
of an emergency like this.

Jokerdog referes to the robert betz website where you download accessible
games. We have all used his games at one time or another. I don't think he
created this file but I have emailed him with a copy of the email we
received on the bct list. We will see. I would not run this file.

I'm oviously upset by this and I just set this guy a note and all I said in

I'll make it available to you as a Podcast. I'm totally blind and I sure
