Expanding Internet access in Kenya: A conversation with Cynthia Muchiru

2021-03-01 Thread NANOG News
“I would not be where I am today, were it not for the various mentors I’ve
met along the way.”

Cynthia Muchiru is one of those people whose energy and enthusiasm for
their work is evident from the moment you meet them. As soon as we became
acquainted with her at NANOG 80 Virtual, we knew we’d just encountered a
rising star in the industry.

A recent grad who studied Computer Networks at Strathmore University in
Nairobi, Cynthia is passionate about digital literacy, mentoring girls in
tech, and leveraging her role as a Network Operations Center Engineer at
Mawingu Networks to help provide greater access to the Internet throughout
Kenya. We spoke with Cynthia recently about her experience as a woman in
tech, the mentors who helped her get to where she is today, and what
community means to her — both personally and professionally.

Reinventing the wheel on a path to deeper learning

2021-03-22 Thread NANOG News
We’d be hard pressed to name many teenagers as thoughtful, curious, and
open to new experiences as Nate Sales. Now in his junior year at the Catlin
Gabel School in Portland, Oregon, he has already built, designed, and
engineered more than most people twice his age. Nate not only manages his
school’s robotics team, he also developed an app to track on-campus
movement during COVID 19, coordinates radio communications for the Amateur
Radio Emergency Service, is a Reliability Engineer at Fosshost, and sits on
the advisory board of the Emerald Onion — a Seattle nonprofit and encrypted
transit ISP.

We spoke with Nate recently about his path into tech, and his experience
presenting at a NANOG conference, where he was — to our collective
knowledge — the youngest to ever do so. What struck us most was his
curiosity and willingness to build, dismantle, and rebuild again in the
name of new discoveries and greater insights; an ethos all of us could
stand to learn from.

NANOG 82 and NANOG 83 Announcements

2021-03-30 Thread NANOG News
NANOG 82

To ensure our community's safety and well-being, the NANOG Board and Staff
have determined that the in-person component of NANOG 82 will not be
possible. Instead, we will hold a virtual meeting on June 14-16, 2021.
Additional information about meeting registration will be forthcoming.

The Program Committee is actively seeking talk proposals for the NANOG 82
virtual meeting and welcomes anyone interested in sharing their
experiences, ideas, or the latest technologies with the greater NANOG
community to submit a virtual presentation proposal by Monday, April 12,
2021.

NANOG 83

Looking ahead to the NANOG 83 meeting later this year, we are excited to
announce that NANOG 83 is being planned as our first hybrid meeting; we are
planning an in-person meeting for those who can travel combined with a
robust virtual experience. Unfortunately, due to circumstances related to
the pandemic, please be aware that the date and location will be different
from what was previously planned. We anticipate that the in-person meeting
will be in Minneapolis, Minnesota, November 1-3, 2021. The meeting schedule
will include a delayed start time to accommodate travel for those with
Halloween-related plans. The ARIN conference will be held in conjunction
with NANOG at the same location on November 4-5, 2021.

Information related to COVID-19 changes frequently, please recognize we may
have to change our plans for NANOG 83. Likewise, it is difficult to predict
what preventative requirements will be in place at the meeting time. Please
know that we will continue to closely monitor CDC guidelines and will share
information as we get closer to the event. The safety of our community
continues to be our top priority.

Please contact us with any additional questions or concerns at any time:
nanog-supp...@nanog.org

Sincerely,

The NANOG Board of Directors + Staff

NANOG Women in Tech: A Conversation with Micheala Clifford

2020-07-06 Thread NANOG News
*"Get as much experience as you can, and make yourself known." *

Though women make up 47 percent of all employed adults in the US, they hold
only 25 percent of computer-science roles, and only 14 percent of software
engineering roles. For women of color, the gap is even wider: Black women
hold only 2 percent of all computing jobs, and Latinx women hold just 1
percent.

There are some truly amazing women in the NANOG community, but we'd love to
see far more. That’s why we work with colleges and universities, affiliate
NOGs, and tech communities to provide greater access to our tools,

the education and empowerment of students, women, and people of color.

NANOG 80 will be a virtual meeting 👉

2020-07-27 Thread NANOG News
*NANOG 80 will be held as a virtual meeting to ensure the safety and
wellbeing of our community — the in-person meeting in Seattle has been
canceled. *

In light of continued COVID-19 outbreaks throughout North America, the
NANOG Board of Directors and Staff have decided to hold NANOG 80
 exclusively as a virtual
meeting. When surveying our community, the majority of respondents said
they would not attend in-person, and would only feel comfortable doing so
if there was a widely available COVID-19 vaccine. We feel the decision to
hold the meeting online best ensures everyone’s safety.

The NANOG Staff and Program Committee (PC) are working hard to provide the
best virtual experience for NANOG 80, which will be held online from
October 19-21, 2020. The program will offer three days of best-in-class
talks, tutorials, keynotes, and panels, peer reviewed and developed by the
PC. Elections for the NANOG Board of Directors will also take place during
NANOG 80, with nominations opening August 17. The NANOG 80 registration fee
will be $250. If this presents a hurdle to your attendance, we encourage
you to apply for a NANOG 80 fellowship — details on how to apply will be
announced soon.

The PC is actively seeking talk proposals
 for the NANOG 80
program, and welcomes anyone interested in sharing their experiences,
ideas, or the latest technologies with the greater NANOG community to
submit a proposal for a virtual presentation by Monday, August 24.

We will continue to keep you informed about the meeting, with announcements
when NANOG 80 registration opens and the agenda is live. Please contact us

And sometimes this perfect cocktail of sophisticated fun leads to solving

New Episode of Internet Innovators!*Crocker Reveals a Behind-the-Scenes
Look at Internet History*

Steve Crocker is known as the man who wrote the instructions for the
Internet - in his twenties. But at one time, he was just a young graduate
student trying to solve a set of problems.

"We knew we didn't know all the answers - we were not going to design a
complete system, we were going to design a toolkit," Crocker said of the
"informal group" which included life-long friend Vint Cerf and other
now-famous Internet pioneers.

In fact, Crocker said when he was given the "clerical task" of writing down
what they were doing, he had many a sleepless night.

"I was fearful the mere act of writing down what we were thinking about
might trigger a backlash," he continued.

"No one had chartered us, we had no authority. I was afraid it might seem
like we were being presumptuous - like we were insisting that we were in
charge. It caused a number of sleepless nights," he said.
