Please process request for Simulation::Automate namespace registration
Hi folks, - Some time ago I submitted a request for namespace registration for SimTools::SynSim (2002-11/msg00127) - Following the suggestion of a referee, I re-submitted it as Simulation::Tools::SynSim (2002-11/msg00331) - Following another suggestion of a referee, I re-submitted it as Simulation::SynSim (2002-12/msg00261) - After yet another suggestion, I submitted Simulation::Automate (2002-12/msg00424) Since then, silence. No reaction except the automated response. Could somebody please either accept or reject this? What's the point of asking people to register their namespace, if nothing happens when they do so? Thanks a lot, Wim -- If it's pointless, what's the point? If there is a point to it, what's the point? (Tibor Fischer, "The Thought Gang")

Uh, hang on, is this the DBI::Simple module? DBIx::* is certainly the right place for it. Just needs a different name to avoid clashing with the pre-existing DBIx::Simple module. Maybe DBIx::YAW (yet another wrapper ;-) Tim.

Help with naming: generic terminal/console interface
Hi. I have a written a module which provides a generic interface to the color/attribute capabilites of some common terminal types, mainly VT102/ANSI and the Windows command window Console. It also (currently) targets an HTML generator backend, and a "no op" backend which simply ignores color/attribute information. Although I have no plans to extend the module's capability to include other terminal-related ops, like cursor movement and readkey/readline stuff, it is a possible future direction. The module provides essentially two things: 1. a function for composing "attributed text" objects, which are output-channel class independent; and 2. a set of output channel pseudo-filehandles, which know how to interpret the attributed-text objects appropriately. Can anyone give advice on what this module should be called? I'm thinking it might fit under Term::, but beyond that, I don't know. Re: Module submission DBIx::Portable
On Wed, 8 Jan 2003, Tim Bunce wrote: > I think this needs a framework name. > How about DuncanDB::* ? > Tim. P.S. A new list of my name suggestions is at the end of this letter. Now that I have thought about it longer, I agree that your original suggestion is along the right track for what I should be doing. That is, I should have my own top-level name, and it should be one appropriate for a "framework". The name should be very distinct so it wouldn't be confused with any existing modules, it should be creative, and it should be not so much descriptive perhaps as implicative of the framework's function, perhaps like a metaphor? In an email that I sent out on monday night in response to _brian_d_foy, I had thought of... - "PortableDB" - "AbstractDB" ... as possible framework names. At the time I thought they seemed descriptive, and similar to what I had before. (On an aside, that monday email never appeared on the [EMAIL PROTECTED] archive site like my other letters, and I don't know why. I got an auto-generated reply saying it would be looked at, which I don't usually get, though. This letter was sent differently from my others; since _brian_d_foy didn't cc me with his message as Tim does (which is very much appreciated; I don't subscribe to modules@...), I copied the text of his message from the web site and composed a new letter whose subject was "re:..." as if it were a reply. That was sent with Eudora. But the message Brian replied to was also sent from Eudora (my later ones were sent from Pine). Maybe some required headers weren't propagated, perhaps. But I would have at least expected the lost message to appear on the list as a new thread, which it didn't either. Did I do something wrong?) In any event, I did some brainstorming last night, while doing more design work, and came up with some new ideas that were a significant shift from the old way of thinking, and I think that perhaps the answer to the naming question lies here. That is, even if the functionality of the framework is largely unchanged, perhaps I was focusing on the wrong aspects to promote. Or maybe I am just thinking of the same features from a different POV (a rose by any other name ...). Instead, how about a name that suggests the ability of the framework to "translate" or "cipher" or "resolve" or "analyse" or "interpret" or "convert" or "explain" or "paraphrase" (yadda yadda) the intent of an application or user or data dictionary towards specific database activity, which also happens to work with any RDBMS regardless of the latter's native interface (binary or sql dialect or feature set)? The idea here is that part of the framework would maintain or use a "data dictionary" or "schema" that describes, not only what tables exist in a database and their relationships, but also describe "views" on the database, from which any DML activity can be generated. One feature that I suspect is unique to my framework is that any "select" statement, no matter how complex, can be represented in a "parsed" form by my framework. That "select statement" is what a "view" is. On one side, the framework can generate a select statement or a database view for reading data it represents into a matrix for the perl application and/or user display/editing screen. On the other side, the framework can determine which of the columns output from a view can be edited and then saved, or when new rows can be inserted through the view, as if the view was a plain table. Sometimes all visible columns can be edited and sometimes they can't. Eg: if the view said "select code || ' - ' || desc as list_item from list_table", then that one column would not likely be editable because we wouldn't know where to put the new value; but, if we said "select code, decode( :user_pref_language, 'fre', desc_fre, desc_eng ) as description from list_table", then we could determine later which column to save the result to when the user changes the single description they see, because the result column still corresponds to a single input column, even if there is a complex indirection when selecting one to the other in the first place. Okay, maybe that didn't say much. But that example scales up to multiple tables joined, or several layers of subselects. The basic idea is that my framework maintains a data dictionary from which all schema or data management actions can be done, and the app using this doesn't have to know what RDBMS they are using. On the side, the framework also facilitates backing up the whole content of a database into another one (which can be a different RDBMS) or to or from a flat file. It can also have adapters on top of it that take existing SQL as input and parse it into an internal representation. So it is possible for apps that were already written, prior to the existence of my framework, for one database to work with another instead without having to be recoded (although there may be performance penalties). I don't think so, because pragmas generally control the compilation environment rather than the runtime environment, and one of the features of Readonly is that you can make a variable read-only with a value computed at runtime. Pragmas also generally have a blanket effect on the program ("use constant" is an exception), and don't introduce functions as Readonly does. I'm not closed to the idea; it just doesn't seem to me that a pragma is a good fit for this. I do plan to experiment with attributes, something like "my $foo : Readonly ('somevalue');", but at this point I don't have any idea whether that'll work well or not. -- Eric J. But the word also has a broader meaning which has nothing to do with cryptography. In any event, I am willing to use something else. > > - RosettaStone > > - RosettaDB > > now, Rosetta is interesting. I thought so too; it was one of my favourites. However, now that I did a bit of Googling, I found a few existing "products" with the name Rosetta. One is a non-profit (?) for archiving or translating known human languages, particularly those that are lost. Another is a data-mining application, with GUI and CLI interfaces (the latter it says can be invoked from Perl scripts). Another is a European Space Agency thing related to comets. Another is an app called "A Sysadmin's Unixersal Translator (Rosetta Stone)". Another is Language Learning software. Yet another was a "Native XML Web Publishing Systems for Classified Newspaper Advertising". Doing a CPAN search, while "rosetta" brought up two pages of results, they must be buried in documentation since it wasn't used in their module names or capsule descriptions. So, would my use of "Rosetta" cause any confusion with the other above mentioned things, since none are Perl-centric, and many deal with human languages? Also, is it better with or without a "DB" prefix or suffix? If it would not be a problem, I am more inclined to use that than any other suggestions to date. Of course, I welcome any more suggestions. > > - PortableDB > > - AbstractDB > > those are too general, i think. Quite possible. Certainly, several existing CPAN modules use the terms somehow. -- Darren Duncan

I am not exactly a Mac person so this connotation did not occur to me. :-) Mail::OutlookExpress looks equally fine to me. But there is also libpst by the same authors (which, according to what I understand from the non-existing documentation, is the equivalent for MS Outlook). I haven't yet made any plans, but I might tackle this lib later as well. So how about Mail::Outlook::Dbx? If I ever decide to port libpst Mail::Outlook::Pst will be an obvious addition to the CPAN. > Any chance this can fit into Mail::Box somehow, too? I haven't yet talked this over with Mark but the idea crossed my mind already. I currently tend to prefer a standalone distribution (with the namespace above suggested) but adding a hook to Mail::Box separately. Thus someone only interested in dbx files wouldn't need to get acquainted with the arguably quite hefty Mail::Box module. Of course, my favorite solution would be to simply release M::B::D and let Mark do all the dirty work to make it fit into Mail::Box. ;-) But I know he's already busy. Cutting this short: brian, could you postpone any namespace registration till I worked this out with Mark? I'll post this issue on Mail::Box's mailinglist and see what he thinks about it.
