Re: podcast question
You are not able to send Youtube videos to iTunes, iTunes does not house audio or video podcasts. iTunes is just a search reposatory for podcasts & will take an RSS feed. It will then check the RSS feed frequently for new & updated content. You are not able to download Youtube videos. I'd suggest that you get a media host such as Libsyn or Blubrry for media hosting. These services will then give you an RSS feed which you are then able to submit to iTunes. You may also use the powerpress plugin if you're a wordpress user, then upload your content to archive.org, grab the imbed link from them, paste that in to powerpress then submit a RSS feed from your wordpress site to iTunes. Yes, allot of information presented here, I know. In closing, keep in mind that your web hosting & media hosting are 2 different animals. Most web hosting will not allow you to send streamed content from them reguardless of what some may tell you... Have to read the fine print on them... - Original Message - From: "Maxwell Ivey" To: Sent: Wednesday, January 29, 2014 16:15 Subject: podcast question hi group; now that i finally started recording my videos, what is the method for getting them on iTunes. do the files have to be uploaded to my website or can i send youtube videos to iTunes if they are in a certain format? what formats do they have to be recorded in? is there some other pod casting service i have to use for videos? naturally i want to get them on iTunes if at all possible. Re: podcast question
Yes, Youtube does not generate an RSS feed & will not allow you to download videos. There is a work around for this... But, much to complacated to get in to here. &, involves the use of google hangouts on air. If you're just wanting to post the youtube videos on your site, you can do that by imbedding them in your posts. Simply by taking the direct link from the video & imbedding it when you write your post. Wordpress will then generate a video player with them. There are also other wordpress plugins which will generate much nicer youtube players... This will only give your end users the ability to watch the video on your site & not do anything else with it. If you're wanting the ability for others to download them or get them in a podcatcher, yes, you will need to reupload the post. & use powerpress. Again, this will require some media hosting as you are not able to take that video from Youtube. Really need to figure out exactly what you're wanting to do with them here. Powerpress is very accessible, you will need to get in to its guts & make some setting changes. Probably drifting way off topic for this list now. So, probably be a good idea to contact me off list for further podcasting type questions & I'll be more than glad to walk with you in the set up process. I do not, nor have I ever done video podcasting, but, I'm well versed in audio podcasting. Re: video blogging
You can use blubrry which you can find at blubrry.com or you can also use libsyn which can be found at libsyn.com. Both of these sites are for media hosting & do produce an RSS feed which you than submit to iTunes. &, both allow the uploading of video content as well as audio content. One of the real draw backs to video blogging, video podcasting, etc. As aposed to just audio blogging, podcasting, etc. Is that it takes a great deal of space to upload those videos verses an audio file. Both media hosting companies listed above have monthly plans. But, you're probably going to need the higher plans verses the cheapper plans which they do offer. I'd say that you'd probably get much better results just by using Youtube for your videos. No, they do not produce an RSS feed which you can submit to iTunes. However, this hosting is cheap, infact, it's free. Also, a great number of people search youtube for video content since it's a video content site. Also, it's the number 2 most used search engine in the world. Just one man's opinion, &, yes, sometimes I do get paid for it. - Original Message - From: "Maxwell Ivey" To: Sent: Friday, April 18, 2014 14:20 Subject: video blogging hello group; is there a site where i can upload my videos and have them shared on iTunes. i found blip and was going to try it but they are updating their system and aren't accepting new members right now. like most of you i need something cheap and easy to use. thanks for your help, max -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "MacVisionaries" group. It’s funny how quickly perspectives change. Now the bar has been raised even higher. The playing field will not be level until blind people have access to every cheep piece of crap in existence. I should say that I’m happy with what Apple does and I have no desire to use anything else. That said however, I certainly think that it would be a very good think if other companies would realize the importance of opening their products up to other segments of society and not excluding them. I just don’t think that this is going to convince them. I don’t want to completely let Apple off the hook as it seems to me at times that there are factions under their roof that don’t seem to understand the importance of accessibility or what Voiceover is even used for. On the other hand, I think that there is a much larger faction at Apple that definitely gets it and that the evidence to support this is over whelming. I realize that not every body can listen to them, but there were some very impressive sessions at WWDC on the importance of accessibility and how easy it really is to not only make an app usable to a blind person, but make it a nice experience to use. I would like to suggest, that just maybe, if a government agency needs to step in to private inderestry and dictate to a company how their product is required to function, the result probably won’t be something you are going to want to use. I think that we as a blind community have access to more information then at any other time in history. I'm assuming that since you asked this question on this list, we're talking about a Mac user? I'd suggest an Audio Technica ATR2100 Mic. This mic is a very good quality mic for not alot of buck. In fact, this is the mic which has made waves in the podcast community over the last year or so. In fact, I've taken to using it as a mic in my home studio for recording my news & traffic reports as well as in the field for conducting interviews with, which are aired on 4 radio stations. For dictation, you're really interested in a dynamic mic, this sort of mic is one which you'll need to talk directly in to commonly used in the broadcast industry, this sort of mic cuts out background noise, around you noise. verses what a normal USB mic is which is a condenser mic. Condensers are mostly used in larger invernments for grabbing a greater amount of ambiance & noise during a broadcast. &, they're also less expensive to manufacturer. Not going to go more overboard in technical specs of mics than that. If you're more interested, you're more than welcome to write me off list. Also, if you're interested in hearing this mic in action. You may also write me as well. Yes, the neat thing about the 2100 is that it is both a USB & an XLR connection mic & both can be in use at the same time. Also, the mic comes with a headphone jack on it's bottom/back for monitoring your output audio if not being run through a mixer. I'd bring this mic to any mic fight & put it up against any of the big boys from Heil, Sure or Electro-Voice. No, I don't sell these mics or work for Audio Technica in any way. I just like this mic at its price point. Which is now down to around 40 dollars on Amazon. Oh, &, yes. I did notice your subject line here. However, I'd totally agree with Ricardo here. Wireless mics are worthless when it comes to dictation. I just gave you an inexpensive option which will hook up via USB to a laptop. 40 dollars is far from 300, even I know that with my bad math skills, but, ok, sounds like you found what you wanted... - Original Message - From: "Alex Hall" To: Sent: Tuesday, August 27, 2013 20:16 Subject: Re: good wireless mic for dictation? Unfortunately, due to physical limitations, the client must have either a wireless microphone or a laptop with a wired microphone, and the wireless option would be much cheaper and easier. I saw many mics listed on Dragon's website as having good dictation, and they were all wireless, so I'm hoping that the right mic will work. As I said, I'd like to use a USB mic, but that is simply impossible in this situation, unfortunately. The IVX mics I'm looking at offer an in-home free trial, so that, coupled with the voice prompts and 94% cancellation of background noise (so they claim), makes this a ver attractive option. Plus, this model is not $300 to $500 like many I saw while researching, and I'd like to keep costs down for the client if I can. Finally, this model offers 20 hours of talk time, which is remarkable in a bluetooth audio device. I have no experience in microphones at all, so was hoping people knew of some good ones or some to stay away from as I decide on a recommendation to give the client. Re: Looking for information on accessible event
Heyya Mike. I'm not certain at all this would be a good podcasting solution. You'd have to create an event, send an envite code, also, not sure how many people you can have on the event line, etc which will greatly reduce your listenership I'd think. I'd consider looking in to audioboo's 30 minute plan which will cost you 8 or so dollars a month. You can send your audioboos directly to your site with an enbedded player. The down side to this method is it forces your listeners to consume your content on your site & doesn't allow them to download it if they're using a computer. If using a podcast client which they've your podcast RSS in. They can download or stream your content. If you believe current stats within the podcasting community, people still come to media tipe sites & listen there & don't download things anyway, only about 15% actually download & listen in something such as windows media, real player, etc. So, perhaps this isn't or won't be a deal breaker. If they want to subscribe to your podcasts RSS, they can & download the content either on their computer or mobile device. This is the method which I've chosen at least for the time being. Not sure I'll stick with it as if my podcast grows in popularity or I want to do something longer than 30 minutes, I'll have to break in to 2 or more parts. Which may or may not be a deal breaker either. As I think much past 30 minutes & you start to loos peoples attention anyway. & studies in the podcast world show that most US citizens have roughly a 30 minute commute, which allows them to listen at their leasure. You may also want to look in to Blubrry or Libsyn which are media hosts which offer a meriod of different price plans & price points. If you chose either of these, you can use the blubrry power press plugin if you're using wordpress as your site CMS. Power press is a great option for creating posts that give you an imbedded player, creats good tags for iTunes, creats a podcast RSS, etc. Power press will create a special podcast RSS feed which I suggest podcasters do anyway so that subscribers can get that content & not all your sites content if they don't want it & it's good for iTunes as well, as iTunes will hickup bigtime if there's written content in the same feed that produces audio. Same goes for stitcher if you intend to submit your content to them. The last option you may want to consider is archive.org. It's free, but, very, very, very slow on the download & upload side. &, a real pain to get content in to it as you have to jump through hoops to get it to take your file. This is a case where free certainly ain't worth it. Your time is more valuable to you than the money may be here. You can also stick your media file RSS in to power press in wordpress & have it work there as well. I get asked all the time. Why can't I just host my media files on the web hosting I already have? If you read your web hosts terms of service. Most of them will tell you straite out that media hosting is not allowed on their shared hosting plans. Trust me, I've asked a number of them & so have other podcasters in the podcast sfear. & the other issue here is that. If you're using shared hosting which most of us do. You can really slow the download down to not only your site, but, all the other sites on the same server. Hope that this helps, sure you'll get other answers. Good luck whichever rout you choose to take. If you have further questions & I've gone off the rails here on the list, please feel free to write me off of it. I'm not sure what's going on there. I understand that you have an older drop box account which has a public folder. However, I've been given to understand that they're blocking this sort of file on any user account. I'd suggest trying it with another audio link if you have one to see if that solves the problem. Instead of placing audio files on wordpress servers, it seems like a better idea to incorporate a link to these files on dropbox from within my posts. I checked out some other blogs from lists members, and that seems to be a common method, and it saves the cost of a space upgrade on wordpress. I have a pre-October 2012 dropbox account, so I have a public folder. The context menu has the "copy public link" item and placing that link in a html link or from the address bar in safari, IE10, and firefox cause it to play as I wanted. Re: MLB spring training games
I've talked to MLB about this issue last week. Here's the answer I got. If you buy or bought from your computer, that's where you get it. If you buy or bought from your mobile device, you get it on both. This is the way it is & will not be changed as best I was told. So, for me, I was able to cancel my MLB Gameday audio which I've paid for for several years now before the money was taken out then, purchased on my iDevices which also gives me access by linking my account. Yes, in years past I've paid for both because I wanted access to archived games which I couldn't get on my iDevices & I don't expect or suspect that'll change this year. - Original Message - From: "Ricardo Walker" To: Sent: Sunday, March 03, 2013 08:54 Subject: Re: MLB spring training games Hello, This is correct. Re: Automatic caller ID announcement, an important privacy issue with VoiceOver on iPhone
Seriously? I don't think most sighted people that you come in contact with can even understand voiceover nor do they even care who is calling you. Again, at least we have the ability to have caller ID unlike when cell phones first came out. What if you have a home phone line & a talking caller ID box hooked up to it & someone is over at your house visiting is it any real big deal if they hear it? Are you going to go cut it off because you're afraid that they may hear it & have some sort of issue with who's calling you? I dare say those things are much easier to understand than any voiceover is... I certainly don't think so. What is a big deal to me is that we have the ability to have caller id, text messaging capabilities, web browsing, email, etc on our mobile devices which puts us at least on a somewhat level playing field with our sighted piers. I'd bet if you asked most sighted folks they wouldn't even care if someone saw their caller id... Probably wouldn't have an issue if it were flashed up on some bilboard somewhere. I think there are much bigger fish to fry in the accessibility world than this one. Again, just be thankful that Apple cared enough about those of us who are visually impaired to give us something like voiceover. Just one man's opinion & yes, sometimes I do get paid for it. - Original Message - From: "Emrah" To: Sent: Monday, March 04, 2013 09:32 Subject: Re: Automatic caller ID announcement, an important privacy issue with VoiceOver on iPhone Hi, How exactly do you think you are being constructive here? On the same register as your message, don't you think sighted people would have an issue if their caller ID were flashed on a billboard for everyone to see every time they get a call? It goes without saying that it is great we have access to caller ID. What is not so great is that it is announced out loud automatically for every one in your immediate surroundings to hear. I know that blind people sometimes have a hard time acknowledging the presence of other people who can see and hear. I like using my phone in a rather discrete fashion with a Bluetooth earpiece. I personally find it annoying that incoming calls make Samantha irrupt through my speakerphone and freak out the fellow traveller who is sitting right across from me. :) I don't quite like being the subject of other's curiosity. They suddenly have to acknowledge that there is a blind guy in the house. I am happy for you if you don't consider it to be an issue. I guess it depends on a multitude of settings and appreciate your opinion. However, I still believe I have a valid point here. There is no reason for us to broadcast the name and number of people who are calling us. Cheers E On Mar 4, 2013, at 6:05 AM, Sean Paul wrote: So, would you complain if it wasn't spoken at all? Re: Does anyone have been up to date audacity podcast?
Heyya pal: Might want to check out Daniel J. Louis's Audacity to Podcast. I do know that he is a Mac user, however, his podcasts are very general in nature & about every 5th eppisode is devoted to doing something with audacity so you'll have to go back trhough his back catelog & see if he answers any of your questions there. Also, he is a sighted user of audacity & this perhaps mmay be a deal breaker for you. However, his content can be very interesting to listen to. - Original Message - From: "Mike M" To: Sent: Saturday, May 11, 2013 16:48 Subject: Does anyone have been up to date audacity podcast? Not only did I say that guy was sighted, I also said that I currently didn't have a Mac. So, having said that. I can't speak on it's accessibility with it. However, as so aptly pointed out by Danny. Re: Watching live college football on iPad2?
You should be able to do this if you download the WatchESPN App from the App store & are a subscriber to certain cable or satellite services, I'm not sure which ones they support you'll have to look @ the App details to see. I do know that the App supports the watching of ESPN, ESPN2, ESPNU & ESPN3. Be aware that using dropbox to host & distribute a media file is against their terms of service... &, may result in either your account being suspended or terminated all together. May want to look in to some media hosting instead. Libsyn or Blubrry are good places to start. There are costs involved with using them both. But, they are both built for downloading media content. Distrubuting your content amongst friends is perfectly fine. What is not fine is distributing it as a podcast, on twitter for the world to get, etc. The sourse of my information is their terms of service & contact a friend of mine who was using them as a distribution platform had with their people. I'm not going to take the time to read articles, I've read their terms of service & I'm well sure of the foot I stand on here. - Original Message - From: "Grant Hardy" To: "MacVisionaries List" Sent: Thursday, December 25, 2014 15:13 Subject: Re: creating podcast feed, was Finder Podcast Part 1 Hi Sean, Could you perhaps post the source of your information? I was always under the impression that sharing your own content was absolutely permitted in the Dropbox TOS, and in fact is one of the core features of the service. Here is an article where Dropbox specifically tells you how to create shared links to distribute files to others: https://blog.dropbox.com/2012/04/share-your-stuff-with-a-link/ Here is another article where Dropbox discusses troubleshooting shared links. They specifically state that you can share content like photos and music that you personally created: https://www.dropbox.com/help/45 In this article, Dropbox says that shared links for free accounts can generate up to 20 gigabytes per day or 100,000 total downloads before being temporarily disabled, while paid accounts get 200 gigabytes per day and no hard limit on the number of downloads. https://www.dropbox.com/help/4204 Of course, you can’t share others’ copyrighted content but it sure seems to me that Dropbox allows you to share your own content. There may be a clause in the acceptable usage policy or in the TOS that prohibits you from using Dropbox to host your own podcasts, but I don’t recall seeing such a clause. Dropbox is definitely more than just a storage service as sharing and collaboration are core features of the product.
