The only problem I've had on the Mac specifically is that my display goes to
sleep for about ten minutes when I first plug it in via USB and does the
same when I restart VO in USB mode. I stumped three levels of Apple help
folks with this one, including someone purported to be an engineer, so I'm
guessing there's a good possibility of it being a bug. I'd suggest using the
Bluetooth and plugging the AC cord in.

Have fun. This display is really a joy to use. I use it with IBooks and text
files all the time.

Focus40Blue Firmware update 4.57

2012-03-30 Thread Scott Erichsen
Downloadable Focus 40 Blue Update

This firmware update for the Focus 40 Blue addresses an issue which arose
after a recent release of Apple's OSX operating system that affects Braille
output

from an Apple computer over USB.

How to Download and Install the Update

Note: Windows is required to update the firmware. The updater will not work
on Mac.

1. Download the FS Braille Display Firmware Update application to a
Microsoft Windows computer using the following link:

ftp://ftp.freedomscientific.com/users/hj/private/WebFiles/Focus40Blue/FS-Bra
ille-Display-Firmware-Update-457.exe

2. When the File Download dialog box opens, choose Save. When the Save As
dialog box opens, save the FS Braille Display Firmware Update 457.exe file
on

the Desktop, which is the Windows default.

3. Launch the firmware updater application FS Braille Display Firmware
Update 457.exe to update the firmware in your display to version 4.57.

4. A dialog box opens displaying the current firmware version of the Focus
40 Blue. Choose Update Firmware to proceed with the firmware update, or
choose

Exit to close the application without performing the update.

5. After choosing the Update Firmware button, the application will warn you
to not unplug the Braille display during the update. When you are ready,
choose

Start Download to begin updating the firmware. You will receive the message
"Download Done" when the update is complete.

6. If you are using JAWS or another screen reader, close and restart the
software before using your Focus 40 Blue.

Note: If a failure occurs during the update process, do not disconnect the
display from the computer. Close the updater application, then relaunch it
and

start the update again.

Hi Kolby,

Generally not. I assume Freedom would let people know.

The company I used to work for sold FS products, so I kept the information
for my own display and figured I'd pass it on to others.

If it doesn't work, contact me privately and I'll send you the file.

Cheers.

RE: A Question Regarding OCR

2012-04-02 Thread Scott Erichsen
Hi Mark,

The Pearl will only work with OpenBOok 9.0 and will only work under windows.

The two options that work with the Mac are the hoverCam with DocuScan Plus
from Serotek and the EyePal.

Personally I like the Pearl and OpenBOok as the accuracy is fantastic from
everything I've scanned.

Hello Everyone,

In addition to being the proud owner of a Focus 40 Blue, I also obtained
Freedom Scientific's Pearl camera along with OpenBook 9.0.

To put it simply, I am stunned with the OCR performance in both OpenBook and
the accuracy of the camera along with the dazzling speed of the image
acquisition experience.

I think what blows my mind the most is the motion detection that allows one
to turn pages and when the new page is in view of the camera, it
automatically takes a photo and begins the OCR process.

I swear it feels as though I have a sighted person reading for me.

I could go on and on but ...

I realize that the pearl has been out for quite some time and am wondering
if anyone knows if it will work with anything on the Mac.

I know one thing for sure, with the Pearl in my toolbox, I have put my
scanner away for good.

notation

2012-06-22 Thread Scott Erichsen
Hi all,

I'm wondering if anyone has found a way to create printed musical notation
from the mac/iOS?

I have windows available to me, but I'd rather not use it if I didn't have
to.

I've had a play with Lillypond but it seemed extremely complex considering
what I want to do.

I honestly wish the music programs like Sibelius were accessible. Voiceover
just crashes when I try and use it.

I have used Sibelius under windows and it works well, but under a VM which
is how I have windows set up on my laptop, I'm not sure how it would work
and I need it to be perfect.

Also if anyone has suggestions for an iOS app that might be worth looking
at, I'd really appreciate it.

If no one has any ideas I'll keep researching and let everyone know what I
find.

Thanks.

RE: Changing from Gmail to iCloud

Yes. You can't have your iCloud address replace an email address that's
already there as iCloud is an ID itself.
The article does say that.

okay, so does this mean my icloud email address cannot become my primary id
that replaces the gmail one? Or does it mean that it can be used
interchangeably with my gmail one and so I could just drop the gmail one?
Would I lose purchases if I dropped the gmail one unless I replace it with
another ID that is different from my icloud one?

Subject: The age old question of which braille display to get

Hello listers. I am trying to decide what braille display to get. I am going
to get at least a 40 but am considering an 80. My main question to you is,
those of you that use your displays for work, which is better? Can I use a
40 productively, or would I be better off with an 80?

Next is the question about connectivity. I currently have all Apple
products, but know that when I finally find an employer that will give me a
chance, I will most likely will ,e using Windows and probably JAWS. Which
display will keep my hands on the display more and reduce the amount of time
going back and forth between display and keyboard?

If I end up going with a 40 cell display, which one works more seamlessly
with the iPhone, and MacBook Pro?

Is there a display that can be paired with more than one device? Like with
my Refreshabraille, I have to make sure my iPad is turned off if I want to
use it with my iPhone, or I have to tell one device to forget it before I
can use it with the other.

Which displays can be supported and repaired in the United States? Is
Freedom Scintific's maintenance agreement worth the price and worth choosing
a Focus even if it isn't your favorite just to have the agreement?

Here are the displays that I am considering I currently use a
Refreshabraille and like the feel of the dots, like the keyboard, and like
the joystick. With that in mind with all the other comments and concerns,
which display would be a better fit for me?

Brailliant BI
VarioConnect
Braille edge
Focus
Active Braille

Feel free to make any other recommendations if I haven't listed one that you
think would be a good fit. I am trying to get my hands on some of these but
may not be able to get my hands on all of them.

I have been reading a lot of archived messages and looking at sites where
they are sold, but I still ckn't figure out which will be the best fit.
Unfortunately people don't go to sites and give feedback. I really haven't
found a lot of reviews online or on youtube. Any and all help or suggestions
would be greatly appreciated.

Under Mavericks, the escape key's functionality changed. You can press
Option-Escape key to actuate a standard escape key function. Also, VO has a
general escape key, when VO-Escape key is pressed. However, the VO sequence
doesn't always work for me, while the Option-Escape key, pretty much, does
the trick all the time.

Hi.

I am looking for an accessible metronome app for the iPhone. I do not need
the metronome for music; I need it for exercising. So I'm looking for an
app that let's me manually enter the number of audible beats per minute, not
music score time signatures. Any thoughts?

Thanks,

responsiveness in VMWare fusion

2014-07-16 Thread Scott Erichsen
Hi all,

I'm working with a friend who has a macbook pro 13inch with the complete
maxed out specs. 16gb ram, I7 processor and 1tb SSD.

He is using windows 8 under VMWare fusion.

He's given windows 8gb ram and is finding that the VM is super slow to react
to key presses.

I know that there is a trick to adjusting the buffer size so things will
speed up, but this did horrible things to my system as well as his system
requiring reactivation of JAWS and the sound was horribly glitchy at times.

Is anyone who uses JAWS in a VM on windows 7 or 8 getting great
responsiveness? If so, what did you do? Are you using 32bit or 64bit? 64bit
would be good if possible and are you using a macbook pro or air and what
are the specs.

Recreating the VM or modifying it is an option and I am prepared to work on
this until it's fixed.

Thanks.

Scott

I changed my sound buffers so audio games would play better, and this caused
my screen reader to work better too. First, I'd see if it is even that; have
a sighted person watch as you perform normal tasks. If Windows reacts
immediately but speech lags, consider changing the sound buffer size. If the
whole thing is slow, your problem lies elsewhere. If you want the link to
the article I used, let me know and I can dig it up. I can say, though, that
I did this with no adverse effects to my VM (the trick is to completely shut
down the VM first).

capslock in Fusion 6 under Mavericks

2013-10-31 Thread Scott Erichsen
Hi all,

I upgraded to Mavericks and at the same time purchased VMWare Fusion 6.

I installed windows 7 32bit with JAWS 15 and have KeyRemapForMacbook and
PCKeyboardHack.

Both are the latest versions.

I've set up the capslock key so that it now acts as a voiceover key on the
mac which is what it's supposed to do, but when I go into fusion it is not
acting like the insert key for JAWS.

I've set my keyboard layout in JAWS for laptop.

Is there anything I need to do specifically in windows or Fusion or JAWS to
make it work correctly?

Any assistance greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

Apple releases fix for OS X Mavericks Gmail bugs to customers

2013-11-07 Thread Scott Erichsen
Apple has released a Mail Update for Mavericks that is designed to resolve many
of the bugs that users of the OSX Mavericks Mail application have experienced
since launch.

Mail Update for Mavericks includes improvements to general stability and
compatibility with Gmail, including the following:

•Fixes an issue that prevents deleting, moving, and archiving messages for
users with custom Gmail settings

•Addresses an issue that may cause unread counts to be inaccurate

•Includes additional fixes that improve the compatibility and stability of Mail

The update was released to Apple employees last week, and subsequently to
registered Mac Developers earlier this week. The update is in the form of a
patch to the Mail update already in Mavericks.

Instructions on installing the update, below:

•Choose Apple menu () > Software Update to check for the latest Apple software
via the Mac App Store, including this update.Other software updates available
for your computer may appear, which you should install. Note that an update’s
size may vary from computer to computer when installed using Software Update.
Also, some updates must be installed prior to others. Use Software Update until
it reports “No Updates Available”.

•Do not interrupt the installation process once you have started to update your
system.

Hi

iOS 6 does not work with the Braille Edge 40.
At least, I had a customer who couldn't get it to work.
If they ran iOS7 the edge paired with no problem.

I have an edge here and it's working fine with both Mavericks and iOS7.
Make sure you are running firmware 1.1 build 20130809
Happy to help you off list with specifics to fix this.
Cheers.

To make the story short, when I chose to add the display, it still came

said Options, and when I chose it, then I got to type in the code. This time

to let the pairing fail first before being asked for the code.

The iPhone, however, is still a problem. It won't even search for the
braille display, and I have restarted it and given it a hard reset as well

Hi Lisette,

That's interesting. The customer was using Braille Edge Firmware 1.1 and

Can't you just install windows in a VM without worrying about bootcamp at

Well, I have a 500gb hard drive, and 200 of that is allocated to my
Bootcamp. I can resize that partition, but I've heard horror stories about
resized Bootcamp partitions going away or getting corrupted under Mavericks.
I'll have to do something, though, because that install has all my programs
and settings, so I want to keep it as my Windows setup, but my Mac partition
has only 14gb free. All that to say, if I cloned the Windows install into a
new vm instead of running it directly, I'd need more room on the Mac side
and to lessen the size on the Windows side. I'll look into all this. Thanks.

coming in to fusion may be your other issue. I have heard a lot of people
complain that running there vm through bootcamp, then importing it in to

there activation gets stripped out, and they are stuck in 40 minute mode.

a vm starts, at least this vm (which is running off my Bootcamp partition).
Even trying to go to the Window Menu to switch focus to the active VM is an
exercise in patience and anger management. I can switch to other apps, but
Voiceover's speech is stuttery and broken, and apps take a long time to come
up (not launch, just come to the foreground). I have a total of 8gb of ram,

other tasks ever since the installation. I don't know, though.

Capslock working as VO Key but not in Fusion?

2014-01-04 Thread Scott Erichsen
Hi All. I know this topic has been visited several times but I’ve just set up a
new virtual machine with windows and although I followed all the instructions
on applevis and I have caps lock working perfectly as the VO keys, but I can’t
get it working at all in the virtual machine.
Is there anything I need to change in VMWare or JAWS specifically to get this
working correctly?
JAWS 15 is set it laptop layout.
Interestingly, when I have narrator running, pressing caps lock does say
insert, but it doesn’t work as it should in JAWS.
I know there are plenty who have it working on this list, so any tips, greatly
appreciated!
Thanks.

update to issue: Re: Capslock working as VO Key but not in Fusion?

2014-01-04 Thread Scott Erichsen
Hi, Just an update to this. and this is really strange.
The left side of my keyboard works fine as JAWS commands, up to H, T and 6.
Any keys further right with the caps lock key just ding with the windows sound
rather than performing there correct function.
Perhaps this will help a bit more.
ALso, commands like the JAWS cursor and RouteJAWSToPC don’t work.
Thanks again for any assistance?

Re: Capslock working as VO Key but not in Fusion?

2014-01-04 Thread Scott Erichsen
Thanks, I’ve seen people discuss it before, but I’ve never seen anything about
half the keyboard working.

As I said, half the keyboard works and all the numbers with caps lock work E.G.
I can open the script manager etc, but I can’t use the JAWS cursor, PCCursor or
Route the cursors to each other.

I don’t care so much about next and previous word and character and line
failing but the cursors are important.

I know that there is a trick to adjusting the buffer size so things will

Is anyone who uses JAWS in a VM on windows 7 or 8 getting great
responsiveness? If so, what did you do? Are you using 32bit or 64bit? 64bit
would be good if possible and are you using a macbook pro or air and what
are the specs.

Recreating the VM or modifying it is an option and I am prepared to work on
this until it's fixed.

RE: insert key remapping not working on right side of the keyboard under Fusion ...

2014-08-26 Thread Scott Erichsen
Hi Jeff,

Through some trial and error with JFW in Fusion, I found a couple
interesting things when working on a Mac keyboard with no number pad.

What I found was that when in Windows in Fusion, turn on keyboard help with
Capslock+1 on the number row so you can play.

FN+semicolon, This should activate the JAWS cursor.

FN+slash This will activate the PC cursor.

FN +CapsLock+semicolon This is the route PC to JAWS

FN +CapsLock+slash This will route Jaws to PC

Experiment with FN + the keys on the righthand side of the keyboard . What
is happening is that the FN key + the keys on the righthand side of the
keyboard are acting as a numpad. So, you can also find the combos to right
and left click and page up/pagedown just like on the numpad.

I do find this to be a pain and will take some getting used too, but, it
does work.

Try it out and good luck.

Hope this helps.

Scott

Jeff,

If you're running Seil, you don't need sharp keys. Seil can remap the caps
lock key to the insert key. Carabiner also gives you a numeric keypad which
you can access using the fn plus the keys on the right side (7 8 9 u i o j k
l m / ; p 0).

Hello Everyone,

OK, this is a very strange one and I am hoping someone can lend some advice
here.

I have a MacBook Pro running Fusion. I use Seil and Karabiner to remap my
caps lock key to the Insert key. I use SharpKeys to flip my alt and window
key mappings and all of this is working as I expect, with one exception.

I normally use a full sized Apple keyboard while at the office with a
numeric keypad on the right. So, this means that the caps lock key doesn't
play a role here for the most part and everything works well for me using
the JAWS desktop layout.

I have found that if I use the insert key on the numeric keypad or the caps
lock key while in Laptop mode that none of the keys past the J key work.
Meaning, I can do things like insert-t, caps lock plus s, etc., etc. but
anything on the right-hand side of the keyboard doesn't work.

Something interesting to note is that the laptop keys don't work whether
using caps lock or the insert key on the numeric keypad past the letter J.

Has anyone run into this issue at all? If so your advice is hugely
appreciated.

I am wondering if the newer versions of Karabiner or Seil have broken
something here?

Jeff

selecting Pay Pal or my Debit Visa card there was an error at the end of the
buying process which VM knew about as it said if we had problems with any
paying method there was an E-mail given which we had to write to. Has anyone

There is a piece of software for windows that will export mail from outlook

O2M by Little machines.

Suggestion one, See if outlook 2k3 supports exporting to mbox format. Long
shot.

Suggestion two, set up a gmail account and connect both the old outlook and
the new mac.

Create the folders on the IMap account, then show the trainee how to copy
and paste the messages out of outlook's folders and into the Imap folders.
Do not do this for the trainee, as it will likely eat up a significant
number of hours, especially if the trainee has a large number of archived
folders.

Hope this helps.

Try a program called app zapper. I'm not sure who makes it, but a quick
google search should yield some results. Not sure if it's accessible either,
but I know that it's main job is to kill any footprints from any uninstalled
app. Sorry I couldn't be of more help.

problems connecting to the app store with both mac and iOS on WiFi

2013-06-25 Thread Scott Erichsen
Hi all,

I'm hoping someone might be able to help me here.

This morning I was able to connect to the mac app store fine and now
whenever I connect I just get a blank html content area.

This only happened on WiFi and it also happened with iOS.

I have not changed anything with my network and I verified the app store on
iOS still worked on 3g because I turned off my WiFi settings.

I'm using a netgear 2200 router and nothing else for router setup.

It's just a simple home network.

I've done google searches and haven't found any suggestions. Any ideas
welcome.

Thanks.

I have a similar problem. My default voice is Alex, but when I use that script,
the voice it uses is Victoria. If I go and change it in voiceover utility, it
changes, but once I quit voiceover utility it reverts back.
Also, it uses default speech rate of the OS etc.
This is Yosemite. Does anyone have a work around? And no, the additional voices

RE: up specking a new MacBook Air

2014-11-28 Thread Scott Erichsen
Hi Lisette,
To the honest if you can, max out the ram and the processor, the maximum the
air will take is 8gb from memory and the faster processor will help you if
you're wanting to run power hungry apps like VMWare fusion, or edit large audio
files. At least, it's certainly helped me.
You will indeed notice a big improvement over the 2011 MBP as the air has a
solidstate drive so it will be fast in every respect.
There'll be a lot of oppinions on faster processor vs, more ram, vs other
things, but I'm just letting you know what I did and it's certainly helped a
lot with my setup.
I also maxed out to the 512gb SSD, so I could get the absolute best life out of
my mac and so I didn't have to purchase another computer for a long time.
(SMILE)
Hope this helps.

Hi folks,
I'm thinking about purchasing the 11 inch MBA. Am I right in thinking that
adding more ram will be more beneficial to a blind person than upping the
processor from 1.4 to 1.7?
Would 8 GB of ram be enough in the 11 inch, 256 Flash drive model? Does the
added processor speed really make a difference if you're not using many
graphics? Will I notice any improved speed from my 2011 MBP which is slow at
opening programmes sometimes.

It really gets expensive adding processor speed and ram.
Any thoughts welcome.
Also, like the other person, I really need simple instructions about how to
clean my old Mac for a new user. I don't know how to get into the recovery
petition and the thought terrifies me if I"m honest. Isn't there a simple Apple
setting to restore to factory defaults like there is on the iPhones?

RE: VM Fusion vs Bootcamp

2014-12-29 Thread Scott Erichsen
Yes. You can install windows without sited help no problem.
I've successfully installed windows 7 64bit and windows 8.1.
Obviously the stuff that comes up in windows itself won't work with voiceover
as you need a windows screen reader, but installing windows with VMWare fusion
works fine.
Hope this helps.

You’re definitely correct about JAWS authorization being erased when a drive is

support software is repaired or uninstalled. Not needing to worry about this
would be a definite advantage. For those who use VM Fusion, are you able to

16GB ram in a macbook air? I didn’t think that was possible?

Maximum I see it goes to is 8gb?

I do all my audio editing on my 11-inch Air. I upgraded it to an I7 and have
16GB of RAM so it's not a stock model, but it's very fast and responsive.

 Hi,

What are the specs on the iMac? I’m guessing that it probably has a
spinning HD as opposed to the MBA’s Flash storage. Flash storage has
considerably faster access than any spinning HD, especially if the
spinning HD is only 5400 RPM’s. Depending on the model of the iMac, the
default RAM could be around 8 GB which should not exhibit choppy speech
like you’ve mentioned. I use VO on some older iMacs when setting these
machines up at my work, and they are slower at starting, slower at logging
in but once everything in the background has finished doing its thing, VO
works normally. Make sure that you have the checkbox unchecked to re-open
windows/applications when logging back in. This box is visible when you
go to logout. Also, make sure you don’t have any apps set to
automatically open as this can slow down the startup process as well.
There are enough processes going on in the background as it is during
startup and login that make it feel slow that adding extra things simply
 prolong the wait.

2013-03-26 Thread Scott Erichsen
Hi Donna,

I'd recommend index I have the Everest V4 which works great! Got it in
December of 2012 and am very happy with it.
Happy to chat to you off list.
Cheers.
Scott

Hi all,

Shopping for a new embosser. Just wondering what folks are using, and what
you might recommend.
Cheers,
Donna

RE: importing emails from Windows

2013-03-29 Thread Scott Erichsen
Hi Lisette,
What email program are you using? I was able to import all my mail without
too much trouble.
Cheers,
Scott

Hi folks,
wondering if anybody has used any kind of app to import emails from a
Windows machine onto the mac? It appears not to be possible with the native
mail programme, which is somewhat surprising considering the number of
people who do switch from windows to the Mac. These emails come from a Pop
account so can't just be brought in from a website. They are physically on a
windows machine.
Any ideas of good apps to try appreciated.
Lisette

RE: closing an app that has no windows?

2013-04-27 Thread Scott Erichsen
Alex,
Kill it from the force-Quit option in the apple menu.
That's the best way.

Hi all,
I opened Piano Pub to give it another try just now, and vo says it has no
windows. Worse, it has no menus, so cmd-q does not work. How can I close
this application? On a side note, if anyone knows why it is not working,
that would be helpful as well, but mostly I just want to close it so I can
see if it has an update. Thanks.

Have a great day,
