Depending on the version of Zoom you are running, the "raise Hand' button is
either at the very end of the participants list or under the More section.

Question about possibility of backing up Windows and Mac on one external drive

2012-03-14 Thread Marcia Yale
The subject says it all--I'm still both a Windows and a Mac user, with one
laptop on each operating system, and I also have an external drive with
about 200 gigs of files which I can connect to either machine and which,
along with the two laptops, I would like to back up. I am trying to decide
whether to purchase one or more than one new external drives to use for
backing up the whole lot, and would like to know whether there is a way to
use one external drive to back up files from all three devices--the two
laptops and the other external drive. Is this even a good idea? All thoughts
and information welcome!

RE: MLB for the iPhone and Accessibility of Archived games

2012-07-23 Thread Marcia Yale
However, you can't fast-forward or rewind the archived games on the Mac, as
the regular player is not usable and you're directed to the light player,
which so far does not have rewind or fast-forward controls. This is
something against which I have lodged three separate complaints, one each of
the past three years, and to which I have never received a satisfactory
response.

RE: Mail on the mac

2011-11-20 Thread Marcia Yale
Mail is a bit tricky since it works a bit differently depending how you
choose to move around. If you tab from section to section, you can use
simple arrow keys to move through first your list of mailboxes and then
through your list of messages. However, if you use VO-right-arrow
(control-option-right-arrow) to move around, you need to make use of the
interacting commands (VO-shift-down-arrow to interact and VO-shift-up-arrow
to stop the interaction) to interact with the tables--first the list of
mailboxes and then the list of messages. I would suggest trying to remember
to tab around and save yourself the need to interact with the tables. I've
been using Mail since September, so I'm also a fairly new user.

RE: Really, really odd, frustrating issue with mail

2012-01-26 Thread Marcia Yale
Hi! I had the same problem. It only happened, for me, with older messages in
my inbox--say, messages more than a couple of weeks old. Luckily I still had
the messages elsewhere so didn't lose the info. To solve this problem, go to
User Preferences and the settings you want are on the final list of
choices--I can't remember if it's "mailbox behaviours" or the next one over.
You need to make sure that the "when mail is kept" is set to "immediately"
and that any of the "when mail is deleted" buttons are set to "never". I
hope that made sense--I should really switch my list subscription to my
Mac--this is all from memory at the moment!

Hello, everyone. I am at my wit's end. I went into my inbox to read my
latest messages, and each time I try to read the text of a message, I am
getting "empty message scroll area." Sighted help indicates that indeed, the
message contents is not displaying. However, on my iPhone, the messages are
displaying fine. I've gone into the various menus, but cannot find anything
wrong. I've tried restarting, logging off, then logging back in. No good.
Help!

RE: more questions about audio editing software

2014-03-05 Thread Marcia Yale
I've used Microwave to record, but then the only thing I have been able to
do is either export the file directly to mp3 and then use another editor, or
drop markers and then split and export. There doesn't seem to be a way to
move slowly through the files, either.

I'd grabbed Amadeus Lite to see what it was like and I think I need the Pro
version to perform some of the things Mike shows in his podcast. They didn't
quite work on my version of Amadeus Lite.

I'm still looking for anyone using MicroWave. I've written to the developer
asking about keyboard commands for selecting audio but no response as of

RE: remapping VO keys?

2014-05-12 Thread Marcia Yale
There is a way to remap the VO keys using two applications--PC Keyboard Hack
and Key Remap for Macbook. I don't seem to have the instructions, but I
believe they should be in the list archives. I believe it was discussed on
this list, though I am on two lists and may have obtained the info from the
other one. I had thought I had saved the instructions, but after following
them, I seem to have deleted the email.

Hi Zameer!
I thought the same thing about the awkwardness of the control key--there
just being one when I first got my macbook. Now I never even give it a
thought. If you have a trackpad you can do so many of the commands there
that used to require vo keys. Turn it on and give it a try.

Mac? I know that one can do it by using Windows. I am trying to do this by
using my Mac and see all the controls and buttons which are perfectly
accessible as before when I did this, the Mac Cloud player for Audible was not
accessible and thus you had to use the app on your I phone to play books.

Thanks.

Report an issue where in system preferences, under the sound category,
VoiceOver automatically selects the tab your focused on, without you having to
press VO+space. This makes it rather difficult to navigate a tab, especially if
it’s not the tab you intended to stop on.

iTunes problem--playing albums

2015-08-20 Thread Marcia Yale
I believe I'm now using iTunes 12.2, under OS10.10.5, but I couldn't verify
this because the "About iTunes" item isn't reading anything with VoiceOver!
Anyway, before this update, I would interact with my album grid, and
VO-space on an album title I wanted to play, then interact with the album
details and move to the track list. Pressing VO-Space on the title does
nothing now--no details appear, and I can't figure out what I'm doing
differently. Any help would be appreciated!

anyone on this list who read audible books on their macs? Secondly, how
accessible was the authorization process? Based on what I read, one needs to
download a book and once the book finishes downloading, the computer will
prompt for a audible username and password to authorize the machine.
Thanks much.

Since no one has asked yet, have you tried to use that USB port for something

It can only be used with the USB dongle. The Mini won’t see the dongle.

I don’t remember how much it cost exactly, but it was under $50. Right now, you

Subject: Re: Problem with Logitech USB Headset

Hello,

This may seem slightly convoluted, but if you are using a Logitech H800
bluetooth/wireless headset, then I have had this issue on a couple of occasions.

In my case, it seems that I need to pair the headset with a bluetooth device,
so I just "flip the switch," let the headset be recognized by my iPhone, then
insert the USB adaptor, "flip the switch," once again, and I'm off to the races
so-to-speak.

This usually resolves my problem. As to why it occurs I cannot answer that, but
the method I outlined above does seem to help resolve the problem. (This only
occurs once every few months or so, so not a big deal).

In an extreme case, more recently however, I had to actually unpair the headset
from the iPhone completely, then repair the headset to the iPhone, allow it to
be recognized by the iPhone, which let me know a signal was being transmitted,
then repair the headset to the computer via the USB adaptor. (I am using a mid
2010 iMac).

Again, I am not sure if this describes your problem, but if these steps do
help, then great. If not, then I hope you are able to find an alternative
solution to your problem.

Hope this has been helpful

Guys,

I have a question. Undoubtedly Apple has changed some things without my
knowing. In Yosemite, I'm having a lot of trouble selecting multiple items in
my finder in a noncontiguous fassion.

It used to be I could interact with the file browser, focus myself on the first
item, then disable cursor tracking with vo+shift+F3. Then, I could VO+down
arrow until I got to the next item I wanted to select. Then, to toggle its
selection, I could hit VO+Command+Space bar. Now, when I do this, it brings up
the actions list for the currently focused item. Do a keyboard help on
vo+command+Space, and you'll see exactly what I'm talking about.

I tried simply passing that keyboard shortcut through to the OS with VO+Tab,
then doing the VO+Command+space bar, but that isn't working. I can confirm
with VO+F6 to read the currently selected items that it's not working.

So, how in Yosemite, and later, does one now go about doing this?

Chris.

OK, so I navigate over to Albums and do VO-Space. then I arrow over to the

VO says "Album Details. I interact with that, and VO over to where it says

hear is "Blank, Text".

RE: How to find podcasts in Itunes 11

2012-12-15 Thread Marcia Yale
First of all, I'm going to assume you're speaking about iTunes on the Mac,
as the Windows version is different than this: There is now a pop-up menu
which takes the place of the sources table, and it's located between the
search field and a button which says "iCloud", if you're in your library. It
may not even tell you it's a pop-up-it may just say "music button", but it
is indeed a menu, so Vo-space on it and it will open a table list where all
your media types will be shown. I suggest you make sure you've downloaded
the latest update, which came out yesterday, as they have fixed some things
with the way podcasts are handled and the update is worth it. Hope this
helps.

Subject: a couple of questions

Hello, Well, I’ve been using Yosemite for a couple of weeks now, and have found
a couple of annoyances. So I was wondering if anybody on the list could answer
these questions:
1 I always have windows in the finder come up in list view, but there seems to
be some odd things going on. The other day I downloaded a season of tv shows
and converted them from avi to m4v files. I then went through the folder and
deleted the avi items. In Mavericks in list view if i tabbed to the first avi
file and hit delete then kept tabbing I would only land on the avi files. But
now it seems to vary. Any suggestions?
2 In iTunes if I am navigating a list of audio books using quick-nav and start
one playing iTunes only plays that book. In earlier versions of iTunes it would
keep playing all the books under that author until i stopped it. Now if I shut
off quick-nav it acts like older versions of iTunes but I can’t always get the
book I want to start playing. Any suggestions?
3 This annoyance has been around long before Yosemite. Say I’m doing something
where I need to hear what voiceover says like navigating a folder of files. If
I get an email VO goes on and babbles that email and I loose track of where I
am in the folder of files. Is there any way to stop shouting out email subjects
outloud?

Thanks, Jeff

Hi
I just updated to this latest version, and now iTunes tells me I have 566
unplayed podcasts. This is simply not true, even knowing the back log of
podcasts I have to get through. Has anybody else noticed this? behaviour? It
seems to be misreporting this somehow. Everything else is working as normal.
Thanks.

RE: The continuing adventures of David eagle and his Apple Mac computer. this time it's about Sendspace.

2011-10-04 Thread Marcia Yale
I can definitely relate--Finder is one of the most confusing aps and I agree
it takes much longer to find files for me than it does on my Windows
machine. I find both Finder and ITunes confusing in the way they are laid
out and would welcome any tutorials on either one of these aps. I have
already read the Apple 101 tutorial for ITunes but found it sadly lacking as
it didn't have any information relating to VoiceOver.

Subject: The continuing adventures of David eagle and his Apple Mac
computer. this time it's about Sendspace.

Hi, here we go again. Every time I switch on my Mac I take a deep breath. I
think about all the amazing reviews I’ve read about these computers and
assume that perhaps, this time, I will finally have a really positive
experience. Today’s task was uploading something to sendspace. Things
started off so well. Sendspace.com loaded no problem; I found the select
file button no problem/ when I clicked on it, I got a window opening for me
to choose my file. I’m not saying this is the fault of the Mac; it’s
probably me and my stubbornness after years of using windows, but it took me
ages to find the file I wanted. Did I have to interact with the sidebar or
the thing that was called list. There was also a popup menu with a folder
selected.
Choices choices. After a few minutes of pressing buttons I found the file.
The process seemed to have some level of cohesion to it, but I’m not sure
what exactly it was. I’m sure it’s very clever and much simpler than the
windows way of doing things. In windows I could have found my file in three
seconds, rather than four minutes.

Anyway, I accept that this is probably just something I need to learn and
practise. Fine. I found my file and went to upload. I pressed the upload
button and I got: “Safari busy. Busy. Busy. Busy”. After a half a minute I
eventually heard “safari, ready”. Hurrah, I can finally check to see if my
file is uploading. I pressed VO right arrow and heard to my dismay “Safari
busy. Busy. Busy”. I quit safari and tried again. But I got the same
problem. Yet again I shut down my Mac and booted up my windows machine.
Within two minutes my file was happily uploading to send space. While it
uploaded I checked my emails using another instance of Internet explorer.
The file has now finished uploading and I am going to email it to my
friends. Windows hasn’t said “busy” at me once. And what really gets me
about this is that the netbook cost £150 and I’m using the free screen
reader NVDA.

How is it possible? I really want to know. I’ve got way more am than my
windows machine, and my Mac cost fifteen times more than my netbook. How
come I have to keep turning off my Mac and turning on my windows machine?
The mac looks great; it’s fast; it’s really quiet – very little fan noise.
But it can’t do things. It’s ten times faster than my windows computer, but
that only means it can do much more to annoy me in a far shorter period of
time than my windows computer.

I want to join the Mac party. You all seem so elated by your Macs. Is there
a magic button to press that starts making it behave. I know I’m ranting
again but surely you can see my point. Is my experience so anomalous? I read
about all these people who say they bought a Mac and now never use windows.
But if I didn’t have a windows computer then I’d achieve nothing.

I know this isn’t’ VO specific. I know it may even annoy some of you.
I know it’s not a particularly productive email. But if you do find this
email to be annoying and unproductive, think of it as a metaphor for my
general experience with the Mac. I feel as if I am the odd one out, and I am
waiting for the day that I am castigated from this list for being “too PC”.
O what irony. I hope you all enjoyed my hilarious ending joke. I’m so sorry
for ranting. I feel like an idiot. Please, treat me like one. Tell me how I
get the Mac to do the fundamental element of a computer. That is: to
compute! Because I am going to end up not bothering to turn this machine on,
which is such a shame because it should be a great computer? Apparently.

I’m sure I’ll get there, and I promise, if I do, I’ll be singing the Mac’s
praises.
Thanks to everyone for being so patient and understanding.

How to change my Apple ID

2018-03-18 Thread Marcia Yale
I am about to change internet providers and my Apple ID is the email address
I will be losing. I have tried to change it several times on my iPhone
without success. I followed the steps listed in the Apple Support app, but
it won't let me change it to the icloud.com email address already listed as
one of my contactable addresses. I keep getting messages saying I can't use
the address but must use one of the addresses on file--that's what I'm
trying to use! The person I spoke with at Apple today didn't help, either.
Has anyone succeeded in doing this and, if so, what am I missing?

Well, I ended up having to call Apple. In the process, I learned that the
website, although the means by which the deed was finally done, is not very
accessible—it has some very strange behaviours using Internet Explorer on
Windows and isn’t much better on Safari on the Mac.

Hi

I did this a couple of weeks ago.

First, this is very important, You have to sign out of your Apple ID on all
your devices, iPhone, iPad, Mac, etc. etc.

Then change it via a browser like Safari, go to apple.com and sign in using
your old Apple ID. There’s a direct website as well, but I can’t remember it
now.

While changing it, remember to set up a second recovery email address right
away.

Once this is done and you’ve signed out of that page, start signing in with
your new Apple ID on your devices one at a time.

First for example take your iPhone, switch it off and back on again, then sign
in using your new Apple ID. Only once the first sign in is successful, go on to
a next device like your Mac.

The restarting of a device before you sign back in was recommended to me by a
friend, I can’t really say if it makes a difference, but I did it anyway for
what it’s worth.

I have a bunch of podcasts saved on my iPhone and was told that iExplorer
would give me access to the files so I could move them to, say, either

anyone has successfully used it, I'd be grateful for assistance. On the
other hand, if you know of another program which would give me access to
items such as podcasts or books stored on my phone I'd really appreciate the
information. I have tried iExplorer on both my Mac and my PC with the same

Unable to change voices on IPhone SE, IOS10

2016-11-25 Thread Marcia Yale
The subject line says it all--I just got a new iPhone SE and I want to get
rid of Samantha and have Alex as my default voice for VoiceOver. I
downloaded Alex, but can't get him activated. What am I doing wrong here?

Voice changing problem resolved

2016-11-25 Thread Marcia Yale
I finally got Alex to activate! Not sure if it was turning off VoiceOver and
then turning it on again that did the trick, but Alex is now alive and well
on my Iphone SE!

RE: ITunes 21.4 questions regarding editing info

2016-06-02 Thread Marcia Yale
Hi, Andrew. I haven't tried it yet, but did you try command-I to get the info
for a song? That always worked. As for searching for a song, try command-F,
which puts you in the search field. I've never tried it for an album but it
would probably work. They you VO-Right and interact with the search results.
Hope that helps a bit.

Subject: ITunes 21.4 questions regarding editing info

Hi,

Ok, I'm getting familiar with the latest iTunes. I've worked out that I can
interact with the new sidebar and choose albums, and my albums will appear in
the grid to the right of the sidebar. I've also worked out that I can change
the grid view to table view. But, firstly, when I try to look for a particular
album - and I have a lot of them, I don't seem to be able to search by typing
the name while focusing on the grid or on the table. There doesn't seem to be
a way of looking for an album quickly. It takes for ever to vo plus arrows
through the grid or list if one has many albums. God knows how long it would
take to find a song among thousands of tracks. So what is the way you deal
with it?

Also, I don't seem to be able to find the info window any more nor can I get
into contextual menu with vo+shift+m. How can one edit info for an album or a
track now?
I'd appreciate any help with this.

Best wishes

Andrew

Speaking Bar in IOS10

2016-10-06 Thread Marcia Yale
I have noticed, since updating to IOS10, that often when I exit from the AT
Bat app by pressing the home button I get a message with two buttons:
"minimize speaking bar" and "stop". Does any of you know what this refers
to? If I press the first one, it changes its name to "expand speaking bar",
but nothing really helpful seems to happen!

RE: Speaking Bar in IOS10

2016-10-08 Thread Marcia Yale
I don’t know what the speak screen is, but if it’s what I have encountered,
it’s not possible to miss the two buttons. I still don’t know what they are
supposed to do!

Interesting you should bring this up. With IOS10, I seem always to have
trouble locating the controls for the speak screen. Somewhere in the middle of
the screen I believe but can’t really be sure. Any quick way you know of to
find them?
