Re: Spotify on the IPhone

2011-12-23 Thread Lynn Schneider
Kevin, am I correct that you need a Facebook account to use Spotify? I don't
have one, but I'm finding the selection on Pandora a bit lacking these days, so
have toyed with the idea of creating an account on Facebook just for the
purpose of using Spotify.

Re: Got Siri

2012-01-19 Thread Lynn Schneider
Gigi, if you want commas and periods in your text, just say them. Here is an
example:
Hello comma ,my name is Gigi and I'm learning to use Siri period.

To learn more Siri tricks and techniques, I would suggest a book which you can
purchase and download from the iTunes store called Talking To Siri which was,
if I remember correctly, 4 dollars and some change:
http://itunes.apple.com/us/book/talking-to-siri/id479419244?mt=11
There are many podcasts out there that might help you, one of which was done by
Jonathan Mosen. The thing about many of those podcasts, however, is that they
were recorded when Siri was new and we all were just learning, so they were
sort of seat of the pants if you know what I mean. Good luck, and my advice is
to keep practicing because you and Siri will get to know each other with time
and will work together better and better if you stick with it.

New voices are great

2011-07-23 Thread Lynn Schneider
While there are things about the new Lion that I'm working on getting used to,
the one thing I have really come to love is the ability to have so many new
voice options for free. I initially downloaded them just for fun and because I
have always wanted different voices, but couldn't justify plunking down my
hard-earned cash to buy them, but now, I am finding them quite useful. I don't
know about you guys, but sometimes when I am reading a long document using text
to speech, listening to one voice for too long puts me into this sort of
mind-numbing trans-like state and breaks my attention span, sort of like
listening to one speaker at a convention or in a lecture who goes on way too
long and you start to tune them out. I was thinking that, with reading a long
document, it would be great to change voices occasionally just for a sense of
variety. I think it would be cool if I could get Lion to change voices
periodically for me through a long document, say every few paragraphs or
something. I can see so many uses for the multiple voices. For instance, as
someone who loves to write, it would be cool to create a story and have each
character using a different voice. Plus, having choices in voices is like
having choices in what you eat or wear. You have different moods and different
needs, and being able to just switch on the fly makes the computing experience
so much more interesting and enjoyable. I think it would be fun to set up
something where, while reading E-mail, Lion could switch the voice to match the
writer. For instance, if I knew that a person was an Australian female, I
could have Lion programmed to use an Australian female voice to read that
person's message. I guess it's sort of gimmicky really, but still, it adds an
interesting touch to what can otherwise be pretty mundane computing tasks.

Re: should I or what?

2011-07-24 Thread Lynn Schneider
As someone who just upgraded to Lion, I would recommend waiting for a while
until some of the bugs are worked out, especially since you are a new user and
are just learning. While I personally have not found the bugs to be
show-stoppers for me, I just think that things will be worked out more as time
goes on. Having said that, however, if you read the new features in Lion and
you are feeling particularly itchy to upgrade, go for it. I haven't seen on
this list, nor have I experienced myself, any horrific problems with the
upgrade like losing everything on your drive or having other terrible things
happen. Most of the bugs that do exist appear to be nuisances of various
degrees of severity. So, I would say, if you want stability and
predictability, you might want to wait a bit, but if there are compelling
features or if you are just really wanting the latest thing, I think you would
be safe to go ahead and take the plunge. I think it depends a lot on what kind
of person you are. In any case, backups are you best friend, so make them
regularly.

Good luck.

Re: Voice over lag and other lion issues

2011-07-24 Thread Lynn Schneider
I think definitely part of the problem is that, with a new OS, we do have to
learn to do things in a different way, but I also wonder if we can isolate
these problems to specific system configurations. I have an iMac with 4 GB
RAM, 2.66 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo and I am not having the lag issues people are
experiencing. I do get the strange com.apple.extras message on boot up, but it
doesn't really bother me. I'm more intrigued about it than anything else. I
don't notice much of a difference at all in boot up times, although I rarely
reboot my iMac anyway. I don't doubt at all that people are having problems,
but since some of us are having problems and others not, I wonder if we can try
to isolate the issues instead of just saying how terrible things are?

Re: What is the reading list?

2011-07-24 Thread Lynn Schneider
Hi Christopher. Have you ever heard of a service called Instapaper?
Basically, it is a way of saving a web page for later reading. Say you are on
Twitter and you see a link to an article you really want to read, but you just
don't have time right now. So, what you would do would be to open the web page
and use this reading list feature to copy the text of the article so you could
read it later, either on your computer or another IOS device. Apparently, the
feature is inactive right now, but in the future when it is activated, it is
supposed to compete with services like Instapaper. Here is a link to an
article about it:
Safari's New 'Reading List' Feature to Compete with Instapaper and ...

Re: where do the new voices go?

Hi Mike and others. I totally love some of these new voices. I always thought
Alex and I would have a monogamous relationship, but, well, you know, I have to
confess that I've been cheating on him these days since more exciting things
have come along. LOL. Actually, I love the idea that I can change up once in
a while. Now, I am totally crazy about these higher quality voices and would
like to get more of them, although I know they will not be free. I would say
that you do need a fairly good computer to download and run some of these
voices, but my iMac seems to like them just fine. I sure wish I could get some
different voices on my iPhone now.

Re: DTB players and thumb drives again.

2010-08-02 Thread Lynn Schneider
Hi Jenny. I use a thumb drive with my NLS DTB player all the time and I do my
file transfers with a Mac, but I recently had a similar sort of thing happen.
It ended up being that I had a bad thumb drive. It was strange because the
drive had been working perfectly for several months, and then one day it just
started doing weird stuff and the DTB player would not read the drive properly,
so I replaced it with another one and all was well again. It therefore may be
that you have a bad thumb drive. You might try reformatting it again using
FAT32, maybe in a PC, and then redownloading and copying the books on the
drive. Another possibility is that your downloads are corrupt for some reason.
Try downloading the books again to see if it was just a bad download. And
you're sure you're putting each book in the root directory of the drive? The
DTB players from NLS seem to like when each folder is placed in the root of the
drive instead of in a subfolder.

Good luck and let us know what happens.

Yes, I always eject properly. The one time when I did not was because my
system froze up for some crazy reason. It was a really cheap brand of thumb

uncommon for a thumb drive to fail, which really surprised me.

Re: problems with safari & google

2010-08-23 Thread Lynn Schneider
One thing I found that helped was to sign into Google with my Google ID and
tell it to keep me signed in. I don't know if this will help in the long term,
but it did help when I did that just recently. Of course, if you don't have a
Google ID, that won't help unfortunately.

VO J not working in new ITunes, any alternatives?

2010-09-09 Thread Lynn Schneider
Hi everyone. Since upgrading to the latest ITunes a few days ago, I have
noticed that I can no longer use VO-J to jump from the sources table to the
list of songs. Arrowing around is a bit tedious, so I was wondering if anyone
out there had another solution for me or could at least explain why my formerly
handy VO-J no longer works.

Thanks very much in advance for any insights.

Thanks very much for your help. In my case, for some reason, I have to
VO-right and left arrow much more than 2 times. If it were only 2 times, it
wouldn't be an issue. I do like the VO-command-T though, very nice.

The new Twitter and the follow button with Safari

2010-09-25 Thread Lynn Schneider
Hi everyone. While I typically manage my Twitter experience with clients,
there are times when I do use the Twitter web site, mostly to follow people.
Today, I attempted to use the new Twitter web interface and found that I was
unable to click on the follow button in someone's profile. I got the same
results with every profile I tried to follow. I was able to revert back to the
old interface and my follow button was happily back and functional again, but I
was wondering if anyone else out there who is using the new Twitter interface
was having this issue also or if this is just some messed up setting on my end.
Any insights regarding this issue would be much appreciated.

Thanks in advance for your assistance.

New ITunes, what do you all think?

2010-09-25 Thread Lynn Schneider
Well, I downloaded the new ITunes today. There is a Ping sidebar that I had to
hide. I still can't use my VO-J to jump to the table. Other than that, it
seems like it is the same. I would use Ping, but honestly, I'm up to my ears
in social media these days and really don't want anymore. LOL.

Re: iPhone, my first impression

2009-10-01 Thread Lynn Schneider
Hi Jean-Philippe.
I agree with you that typing on the iPhone is not as fast as with a
standard keyboard, but you would be surprised at how proficient you
can become with practice. I have the iPod Touch. I have found that
one of the tricks to becoming really proficient with the touch screen
is learning your applications and where things are on the screen,
specifically the distances between things. Just as you are very
familiar with where things are in your house, such as how far the
furniture is from the walls, etc., you learn to very quickly judge the
distances between the numbers and where your icons are on the screen.
Another important trick is to get the ergonomics right. I found that
when I first started learning to use the touch screen, I was tensing
and contorting my hands in a weird way which caused my fingers to sort
of spasm a little. You have to find a comfortable position, and learn
to relax your hands as much as possible. Since those like me who have
been blind from birth have never used a touch screen, it is a new
thing and will take a commitment to practice, willingness to learn
something totally new and a fair amount of frustration tolerance
initially, but perseverance through the learning curve can have a very
rewarding outcome. There are easier options out there and I don't
think touch screen technology is appropriate for every blind person,
but if you have a sense of adventure, are openminded about new things
and have the time and willingness to practice, I'd say go for it!

A few questions for this Imac newbie

2009-10-02 Thread Lynn Schneider

Hi there. Words cannot express how thankful I am for this list and
the many great podcasts out there which helped me make the transition
to the Mac. I do have a few questions that I cannot find the answers
to in the documentation.

First, is it necessary to periodically restart my Imac? I know in
Windows, if I didn't periodically do a restart, things would get sort
of gummed up and eventually the PC would get really slow, so I just
got in the habit of doing a restart every day.

Secondly, since the USB ports are in the back of the computer in a
somewhat difficult spot, can I just keep the USB cable for my iPod
Touch connected all the time?

Thirdly, I'm struggling a bit with the web and was hoping you guys
could pass along some suggestions. I actually crashed Safari
yesterday and had to do a force quit. I seem to be able to find links
on the web pages, but cannot seem to be able to arrow up and down to
find text, even when I lock the VO keys. I have tried DOM mode.
Maybe I should use groups mode? Which do you all prefer and why?

Thanks in advance for any assistance you can provide.

Growl and Adium

2009-10-05 Thread Lynn Schneider

Hi everyone. I am a very recent switcher who has tried to install and
use Adium. Upon starting up Adium for the first time, it wanted me to
install something called Growl. I was not sure if this was absolutely
necessary to use Adium, but I said yes. Since then, things look
different on my system. I did some research on Growl, but I still
don't understand what it does. I'd really like to get it off my
system, so I did the uninstall procedures suggested by the developers,
but when I go into system preferences, I still see a Growl button.
All of this is reminding me of the reason I stopped using Windows.
Now, also, when I click on my Mac HD, I see all my apps listed there
instead of just in my apps folder like it was before. I uninstalled
Adium to see if that would help, but things are still not like they
were. Why is that Growl button still in my system preferences even
though I uninstalled the program? I didn't think Mac had a registry,
so where is this stupid thing hiding? Thanks in advance for any
assistance.

Re: iPhone, my first impression

You know, since both devices have Bluetooth capability, I've been
wondering whether it would be possible to use a bluetooth keyboard
with the Touch or the iPhone? I'm not having a problem entering text
or using the touch screen myself, but it's just something I've been
wondering about.

Re: Growl and Adium

2009-10-07 Thread Lynn Schneider

Hi Nick. I am happy to say that I did get rid of Growl by doing a
combination of the instructions on the Growl web site in combination
with bruit force search and destroy of every single file with Growl in
the title. It is interesting to me that, as I researched the answer
to my problem with Growl, a lot of people said the same thing you did,
that it was easier to just turn it off than to uninstall it. One of
my character flaws, however, is my chronic stubbornness. I'm not
content leaving well enough alone. I have a brand new computer, and
if there is something on there that I don't like, I want it gone, not
just forgotten. Thankfully, I did find the solution to my problem. I
had to go into my library folder under my name and delete all
references to Growl. I was like a maniac on a mission (LOL). I went
through every folder and subfolder and wacked off every file that
referenced Growl, and as far as I can see, it is gone for good.

Adium and messages from unfamiliar people?

Also, are there any good alternatives to Adium? Thanks in advance for

iMac unstable after coming out of sleep mode

2009-10-27 Thread Lynn Schneider

Hi everyone. I have had my iMac for a little over a month now and am
on the latest version of everything. Sometimes, I notice that when I
hit the control key to wake my iMac up, it will be a little unstable
for a while. For example, sometimes the first app I run after the
wakeup process will crash, and I notice that Voiceover will often
sound choppy and even restart after a few seconds. After that,
everything settles down and works fine. I know that on my Windows
machines, I always disabled sleep mode because of similar behavior.
As this is a new iMac, should I be concerned about this? Do any of
you disable sleep mode? Would it help to turn the computer totally
off instead of using sleep mode?

Thanks in advance for any help you can provide, as I am a recent

Re: my 2 months with a mac

2009-10-30 Thread Lynn Schneider
Hi. You said something that caught my attention and I'm hoping you
can explain further. I have been using my iMac now for a little over
a month. I'm not sure if I would call myself a switcher, since I
still think Windows has a lot of value for me, but the one thing I do
miss is not being able to talk with my MSN Messenger friends. People
have recommended Adium, but I have not had much luck getting it to
work. Did you say you use MSN Messenger on your Mac? I didn't know
this was possible? If you could explain, I would be ever so grateful,
as I really miss chatting on MSN Messenger and there are friends that
I haven't been able to talk to since switching to the Mac.

Time questions

2009-10-31 Thread Lynn Schneider

Thanks to everyone for all the great info. I have two questions about
time that I hope you can address.

First, will Snowy be a smart little kitty and update my iMac's clock
to daylight savings tonight or will I have to do it manually?

Secondly, yesterday someone said that if you have the check box for
allowing Voiceover to be controlled with Applescript, you can hit
option-T and get the time spoken out. I have this box checked in VO
utilities, but option-T is not working for me. Any hints? Thanks in
advance for any timely insights, LOL.

Thanks so much Nic. I didn't know about the keyboard commander, which

like a charm.

Thanks again for your help.

Hurricanecity.com stream

2009-11-08 Thread Lynn Schneider

Hi everyone. I like following extreme weather events. In the Windows
world, I accessed the audio stream at hurricanecity.com frequently
when there was an approaching storm. Unfortunately, I cannot seem to
get this stream to play on my Mac. I have VLC, but it does not seem
to grab the stream either. It is a Windows Media stream, but it is an
embedded player. Is there any way possible that I can play this
stream on my iMac? I would greatly appreciate any help with this
since there is a storm out there brewing that I would like to follow.

Re: adem, and msn, ipodtuch?

2009-11-13 Thread Lynn Schneider

Hi Maurice. I had trouble with Adium at first too, but just a couple days ago,
I figured it out. To read the chat window, as someone else here said, you have
to VO-arrow around to find the part of the window that Voiceover describes as
unknown and interact with it. Since it seems to keep track of the entire
conversation, to get to the bottom, use VO-end.

Re: music downloads

I like www.amazon.com/mp3. I have not tried it yet on the Mac side, so I hope
it is accessible, but on the Windows side, I used it all the time. You can buy
single tracks or albums, and the prices are quite reasonable.

Hi Donald. You need something called Flip For Mac. The latest version is
compatible with Snow Leopard. I haven't been able to get it working yet, but
this is the application you need. Try this link:

Re: no mac for blind people in Belgium

It's not that much different here in the U.S. Typically, if you want a state
agency to pay for your technology, they will have contracts with certain
companies like Humanware and will prefer certain screen readers, typically
Jaws.

Need good OCR program for the Mac

2009-11-29 Thread Lynn Schneider
Hi everyone. I'm looking for a good OCR program for the Mac. I would like to
scan books and submit them to Bookshare, so quality is very important. I have
been looking at some of the commercial packages out there instead of the
blindness-specific packages, but I need to be able to decolunize documents and
I also need the program to be accessible. I will go with a blindness-specific
product if necessary to do the job well. I am willing to pay to get a good
program.

Thanks in advance for any insights.

Re: Economics and the Mac

2009-11-30 Thread Lynn Schneider
I purchased my first Apple computer about three months ago. I will never
forget the feeling of complete surprise and joy at being able to just turn the
iMac on and get it talking within minutes. Microsoft is not to blame for not
having default Windows access out of the box, blind people are to blame. As
Mark said, thinking outside the box can get you into hot water. A few years
ago on a blindness-related list, I made the cataclysmic mistake of expressing
my wish that some day, windows would be accessible out of the box. You would
not believe the hate mail I received from tons of blind people basically saying
that I wanted a free lunch, I was ungrateful for all the hard work and research
of the screen reader companies, etc. etc. Honestly, it was totally shocking to
me that I would get such ire for simply suggesting that we ought to have access
to something our sighted peers take for granted without having to pay thousands
of dollars extra. But, being on this list and seeing all the other blind
switchers out there, I feel at least a tiny bit vindicated, as blind people are
starting to see the benefits of universal access. I really think it is the
young blind people who are going to demand universal access, at least I hope
so. They are the ones who are going to benefit most from being able to buy an
iPhone or iPod Touch like their peers and just start using the thing, and they
are hopefully going to demand more of that. With chips being so cheap now,
there is absolutely no reason why universal access cannot be built right into
things. The best thing we can all do is to spread the word far and wide about
what Apple has been able to accomplish with their products and make them an
example of what can be.

AbbyFine Express problem

2009-12-02 Thread Lynn Schneider
I purchased AbyyFine yesterday. It does a great job converting PDF documents
to text, but I've been having a problem when I try to do OCR from a scanned
document. I tell the program that I want it to get the document from my
scanner, and then I think it is the Twain driver window comes up. It says Scan
Gear and there are some pretty inaccessible controls that let you do certain
things, but then I can't find the button to actually scan. My scanner is a
Cannon MX 860 series scanner. I know the printer works, but I have never
scanned with it before. I'm not getting any error messages spoken, but once
this Twain window comes up, I can't close it or get back to AbyyFine. I'm
thinking the scanner bed might be locked, although I have no idea how to unlock
it? What I'm really hoping is that I can somehow get this document to scan so
that it can be processed for OCR. Anything that might point me in the right
direction here would be most appreciated. Is it possible that I might have to
scan with another program? Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

Re: Introduction

2009-12-05 Thread Lynn Schneider
Rick, as a very recent switcher myself, I know what you are dealing with in
learning to use the Mac. Aside from learning a whole new set of commands,
there are also some concepts that need to click in your head to successfully
use the Mac. The more time you spend with it, the faster things will click of
course. I think for myself, I started with the E-mail program. Before I
bought my Mac, I did a lot of research and took notes so that I could get up
and running as quickly as possible. I hated the keyboard that came with my
iMac, so I decided to use my old faithful Logitech keyboard from the Windows
side and I am very glad I did that. I love being able to use my number pad to
do keyboard commands with the Mac. It makes things so much easier. I could
never have done it without this list and Mike's series of podcasts on the Mac.
The strangest concepts coming from the Windows side were interacting and the
different way the cursor moves on the Mac. It took me a long time to get
straight in my head now when you move your left arrow, it jumps you to the left
of the character and when you move the right arrow, it puts you to the right of
the character. Another concept that was sort of weird was ejecting a disk
image when you install a program with command E. These were things we didn't
have to do on the Windows side, but once you wrap your mind around these
concepts, you'll be off and running with the Mac. Good luck, and keep us
posted on your progress..

Krister, I'm trying to learn Amadeus Pro myself. I'm wondering if we could run
that PDF manual through AbyyFine to get a better rendering? It does a great
job with PDF documents. I'm also looking for any podcasts that might be out
there on Amadeus, but can only find one concerning the batch converter. Good

Re: Is the IPod Touch just a toy, or what?

2009-12-06 Thread Lynn Schneider
Jes, I admit that I do a lot of fun things with my iPod Touch like listening to
music and podcasts and playing word games, but I also do some serious things
with it too. For instance, I can get my E-mail on the go, check my TV listings
with the TV Guide app, keep to-do lists and grocery lists on there for when I
go shopping with a sighted person, bring up street directions, check the
calorie content of foods and other things. I don't think a person necessarily
needs an iPod Touch or iPhone, but it does give you some pretty useful
computing power while on the go depending on what apps you install and how you
end up using it. In reality, I would guess that most of the things people do
with their Touches and iPhones revolve around entertainment pursuits, but if
you want to, you can also make it a very handy tool for getting things done.

Re: Media Player

2009-12-06 Thread Lynn Schneider
Hi Matt. I use VLC and have also installed something called Flip For Mac which
is supposed to play Windows Media files, although I have not been able to get
it to work for hurricanecity.com. It says I don't have some sort of mime
plugin and I don't know where to get it. Windows Media files have been my
biggest challenge on the Mac.

Re: It's pointless!

2009-12-10 Thread Lynn Schneider
Jess, I for one am a recent switcher. I was myself a diehard Windows user and
I thought it would always be that way, but I needed a new computer and Windows
7 was not yet out, Freedom Scientific started doing things that I did not like,
and I joined this list to learn about the Mac as a possible alternative.
Between Mike Arigo's podcast series on the Mac and the wonderful people on this
list, I was converted lock stock and barrel. Yes, I still like Windows and am
thinking of installing it on this computer via Fusion, but I am not in any real
hurry to do that right now, as the Mac meets about 99 percent of my needs. The
answer to whether a diehard Windows user can be converted depends mostly on the
Windows user herself. If you don't have an open mind, are unwilling or unable
to cope with change, are not truly committed to sitting down and learning a new
system, have some sort of psychological baggage about the Mac or simply don't
have the money for a Mac, then you won't be converted. No one should be forced
or coerced into doing something they don't want to, but I think that to be
closed-minded about other possibilities is a very unfortunate way to be.
Everyone is different, but the first step in becoming a switcher is to accept
the idea that there might be something out there that is better than what you
are used to or could be of some benefit to your entertainment or productivity.
I don't get political about my technology. I am willing to use whatever can
help me get the job done in the most efficient and cost-effective manner. I
see it this way, life is hard and I need all the tools I can get in my toolbox.
Sometimes I need Windows, especially at work. Sometimes I really need my
iPod, like when I am on the go, and sometimes I need my Mac because I want to
use a wonderful, stable computer system and I have a great deal of respect for
Apple and all they are doing to make technology accessible to everyone. I'm
not sure if that answers your question.

iTunes and time jump, can it be done?

2009-12-27 Thread Lynn Schneider
Hi everyone. Is there a way to do a time jump in iTunes? I like to put on a
podcast to relax myself before I fall asleep, and many times I will have
listened to an hour or so of the podcast before drifting off, so the next day,
I want to skip ahead to a specific time. I know about command-option-right and
left arrows, but that is very slow. I did see something while poking around in
the information menu that says start time and end time, but I can't quite get
that to work. Any assistance with this would be most appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

Re: iTunes and time jump, can it be done?

2009-12-27 Thread Lynn Schneider
Hi Mark. I guess what I'm trying to do here is to be able to jump to a
specific place quickly. If I actually stop the podcast, Itunes does remember
where I left off. The problem occurs when I fall asleep and don't stop the
podcast, so when I wake up, it is at the end, or I guess I should say at the
beginning again. I want to be able to punch in a specific number, like for
instance specific hour, minutes and seconds, and have Itunes jump to that
specific spot. I could do this with Winamp under Windows. If I thought I fell
asleep about 20 minutes into the podcast, for instance, I would hit a key
combination and type, say, 00:20:00 and it would jump me 20 minutes into the
podcast. On the iPod Touch, it is easier because there is a slider that I can
swipe and move the play head quickly forward, but I don't see anything like
that on iTunes on the Mac. Even if I could get the command-option-arrows to
move in bigger increments, I'd be happy, but as it is now, it only moves a
second or so at a time.

Esther, thank you so much for your help with this. I tried this script this
morning and it does exactly what I have been wanting for so long. I put on an
episode of the Mac Break Weekly podcast last night and fell asleep after about
a half hour. This morning, I was able to use the script to advance forward 30
minutes very quickly. This is just great! Thanks again.

Listening to audio clips on ktna.org

2010-05-16 Thread Lynn Schneider
I am very interested in all things Alaska, especially mountaineering in Alaska,
so I really like a public radio station from there at www.ktna.org. Up until a
few weeks ago, I could listen to the audio clips like the news casts and a
program called Nuggets. Now, however, they have apparently changed to Flash
content and I cannot play any of the audio clips on my IMac running the latest
build of Snowy. Aside from getting a Windows netbook, is there anything I can
do to listen to these clips? Any assistance you can provide would be much
appreciated, as there is some very interesting programming that I do not want
to miss on this station. The live feed works fine, just the audio clips will
not play.

Thanks in advance for any insights.

Re: Listening to audio clips on ktna.org

Hi Karen. Yes, I am considering contacting them, but I wanted to make sure
there wasn't a simple solution I could do on my end, so thought I'd check with
the list first.

Hi. Yes, you're right, the listen link does work. What I am trying to do,

Getting song title in the iTunes radio stations, is it possible?

2010-06-19 Thread Lynn Schneider
Hi everyone. I've been curious about something for a long time and thought I'd
get your input. When I listen to the radio stations that are provided through
iTunes, often I will hear a song I like, but cannot seem to get the title.
Also, I would like to automatically buy these songs in the iTunes store like I
do with Pandora Radio. I think this is indeed possible because when a song is
playing, I can go to the dock, highlight the iTunes icon, bring up the context
menu with vo-shift-m and arrow down a few times. I do indeed see the title of
the song, the name of the musician and there is actually an option to search
for the song in the iTunes store, but it is dimmed. What I've been doing is to
arrow down to the title of the song and use the vo option to automatically copy
the last phrase to the pasteboard, but is there a way to do this through the
main iTunes interface?

Any insights on this would be most gratefully appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

Lynn

Re: Getting song title in the iTunes radio stations, is it possible?

2010-06-20 Thread Lynn Schneider
Hi Scott. Thanks so much for your help with this. I had to change the view to
get the titles to show. This is great. I'm wondering if there is a way I can
get it to take me directly to the song in the iTunes store? It's not really a
problem to just use the vo-shift-c to copy the title to the pasteboard, but I
was wondering if there was a quick way to get it to put me in the iTunes store?
If not, that's okay, just curious.

Thanks again very much.

Printing labels on my Mac

2010-01-11 Thread Lynn Schneider
Hi everyone. As you know, I am a fairly recent switcher. I used to make and
print address labels under Windows with MS Word. Now that I don't have that
anymore, what can I use to make and print labels on my Mac? The only word
processing I have is with TextEdit, which I don't think has a label-making
facility.

Repairing permissions, should I close all apps?

2010-02-05 Thread Lynn Schneider
Hi everyone. If you are having problems with your system and you want to
repair permissions to try and fix them, is it necessary to close all apps
first? I noticed that last time I repaired permissions, it did fix a bad
Safari problem, but when I looked at the log, it showed that certain files were
not able to be opened or something like that. I'm going to try repairing
permissions again just as a routine maintenance thing, but this time maybe I
would turn Voiceover off first? I just wanted to know what you all thought. I
don't exactly understand what repairing permissions does, but I noticed that
when I had to force quit Safari because it was acting up on several occasions,
I repaired permissions and it made Safari like new again, so it does indeed
work sometimes.

I crashed the new iTunes already this morning, so thought I'd repair
permissions just to make sure things were on the right track for this new
version.

Thanks in advance for any insights.

Re: Blog post: First Glance at Firefox Accessibility on OS X Snow Leopard

2010-02-11 Thread Lynn Schneider
Oh I would so love to have an alternative to Safari! I'm a fairly recent
switcher and I don't miss Windows at all except that I totally and absolutely
miss the great accessibility I had with IE. I hate the fact that I can't read

Pandora on the Mac

2010-02-13 Thread Lynn Schneider
Hi everyone. I totally love the Pandora service on my iPod Touch. I purchased
a paid account, but cannot seem to get it to play on my Mac. I can find the
links to play the stations, but when I click on those links, I get no music at
all. Is it necessary to download the Pandora player for the Mac? I don't get
any error messages, but the music just does not play.

There are special features that paid members get, but I cannot seem to access
the members features with VO and Safari, so I cannot download the player.

Any help with this would be much appreciated.

Re: adding stuff to the doc?

2010-03-21 Thread Lynn Schneider
Also, you can add it while the app you want to add is running. Open up the app
you want to add. Now go to the dock and find the app you want to add. For
example, say you want to add mail to the dock. Arrow through the dock items
until you hear it say mail running. Now, hit vo-shift-m and arrow up 3 times
until you hear options. Expand this with right arrow. One of the items in
that menu will be "keep in dock." Press enter on this and your program will
now stay in the dock. I use this method because I tend to forget that keyboard
command to add an item, and it works for me every time.

Hope this helps.

Gmail, Imap and missing mailbox

Hi everyone. I'm on a cooking list and keep the recipes I like in a mailbox

exist because I can view it when I log into Gmail from the web site. I can
also transfer messages from my Mac to that mailbox on Gmail, but I just can't
see it in the list of mailboxes. I am using imap. Any help with this would be

Re: Selecting links in Syrinx

2010-04-03 Thread Lynn Schneider
If it doesn't seem to work, after hitting the command-shift-l combination, try
hitting command-tab to go to your Safari window. I find that sometimes when I
use the command-shift-l, it actually does open the link, but it does not
automatically put the focus on the Safari window so I have to command-tab over
to it. It's not really a problem, it's just something I've noticed.

Re: syrinx question

2010-04-07 Thread Lynn Schneider
I started using Twitter about a month ago. Twitter is very accessible, both
with the main Twitter web site and with Syrinx. Yes, when you get new tweets,
you will hear a sound effect which is nice because it's not too obnoxious but
just loud enough. I really like Syrinx very much and use it all the time.
Here are a few of my favorite keyboard shortcuts that might also help you:
Command-B bookmarks the newest tweet so that when you go back into Syrinx, you
will start with the newest stuff, and you would arrow up, not down to go
through your newest things.
Command-shift-l opens a link associated with the tweet you are on. Remember
that sometimes, a Safari window will open with the web site, but Syrinx will
not automatically put the focus there, so you'll have to command-tab over to
Safari to see the web site.
Command-shift-u shortens a link. Just select the URL you want to shorten and
press command-shift-u.
Command-n gives you a new search window where you can type in whatever you're
interested in and it will bring up a list of relevant tweets on that subject.
Command-shift-R replies to a tweet, already filling in the at sign and username
of the person to whom you are replying.
Command-1 updates.
Command-2 go to bookmark.
Command-shift-r replies.
Command-shift-p goes to the user profile of the person whose tweet you are on.
Command-shift-d starts a direct message.
Command-shift-t retweets. the tweet you are currently on
Command-control-u unfollows a user whose tweet you are on.
Command-control-u unfollows a user whose tweet you are on.
And there are others, but you can just poke around in the menus and find them.

Hope this helps and happy tweeting.

RE: question about Ipod: How to prevent it from unpausing?

2009-09-18 Thread Lynn Schneider

Personally, I turned the screen autolock completely off in settings, as I am
a new Ipod Touch user and find it annoying to constantly have to unlock
while I'm reading documentation trying to figure things out. If you turn
off the autolock, you can still lock manually if you want.

Subject: question about Ipod: How to prevent it from unpausing?

Hi listers,
I am experiencing an annoying problem with my Ipod touch. If I no longer
want to play music, I pause the currently playing song.
However, if left alone long enough, the Ipod will resume playing music,
rather than simply sleep. I have the screen set to lock after five minutes
of not being touched. How do I fix this? I don't like my battery being
almost full when I leave it, and then discover later that it has been
playing and draining my batter all the while.
Have Iphone users had this problem?

Need cloud-based Mac-accessible service for recipes

2011-08-27 Thread Lynn Schneider
I'd like to find a cloud-based, Mac-accessible, reasonably-priced service for
backing up my recipe collection so I can access my recipes on the go from my
iPhone, PC, etc. I'm thinking these files, which would be plain text files,
shouldn't take up that much space, but I probably have a couple thousand
recipes right now. I'd like to be able to have some basic search capability as
well. The service wouldn't necessarily have to be made specifically for
recipes. I do have a Dropbox account, but was wondering about other
possibilities you might suggest.

Thanks in advance for any insights.

Question about Safari and reader

2011-09-10 Thread Lynn Schneider
I really find the reader in Safari, shift-command-r, to be extremely helpful,
but I wonder why about half the time, it does not work at all? When I
encounter a page where it does not work, is there anything I can do to make it
work?

Thanks in advance for any insights.

Too much verbiage being read in message list in Mail

2011-09-14 Thread Lynn Schneider
Hi guys. How can I cut down on the amount of information I see when going
through the message list in Mail? I am using Lion with the new mail view
instead of the classic, but I find that there is a lot of useless chatter. I'd
really like to get rid of the date stamp column, as I don't care about that. I
knew how to do this under the classic mail view, but haven't been able to
figure out how to do it with the new view.

Thanks in advance for any insights.

Has anyone successfully done jobs with Amazon Mechanical Turk?

2011-09-14 Thread Lynn Schneider
I have a day job right now, but I'm looking to make a few extra bucks
and was wondering about doing jobs using Amazon Mechanical Turk. One problem I
have noticed already is that they have an inaccessible capcha to sign up for
the service, but aside from that, I am just wondering if any of you have done
any projects on there successfully using a Mac. They apparently have some work
there that I could theoretically do, like transcribing podcasts, etc. I was
hoping someone could specifically address accessibility issues with regard to
the Mac on this list, but any more in-depth experiences with Amazon Mechanical
Turk would be most appreciated off list at canepri...@gmail.com.

Thanks in advance for any insights.

Re: Seeing AI And Reading Of Bar Codes

2019-04-27 Thread Lynn Schneider
I’ve noticed that I am having trouble with this app also lately. I am glad to
hear that others are having the same experience, but it really makes me sad, as
I depend on this app a lot. I was actually about to reinstall it, thinking
there was just some kind of problem on my end. Honestly, I love this app so
much that I am willing to pay for it. I’m going to send off a message to the
developer to see what the status is. Anyway, hoping for better news soon. Take
care and thanks for listening.Lynn

Question about searching from within folders

2011-01-12 Thread Lynn Schneider
I thought I was opening a container of rice pudding, but instead opened a
container of sour cream. I knew I had some recipes on my Mac that contained
sour cream, so, not wanting to waste the sour cream, thought I'd bring them up
and find one but just cannot figure out how to do it. My recipes are all in a
folder called recipes in my documents folder. I first opened my recipes
folder, then used option-F to bring up the find dialog and typed in sour cream
in the search box, but I can't figure out how to make it just search the
recipes folder and not the whole entire hard drive. I know how to do it in
Windows, but not sure on the Mac side. Any help would be most gratefully
appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

Re: Question about searching from within folders

2011-01-12 Thread Lynn Schneider
Hi Carolyn. Actually, what I was hoping was that it could search the contents
of the recipes in a certain folder for this one ingredient. In some recipes,
sour cream isn't in the file name itself, so was hoping I could get it to
search the contents. I could do this on Windows quite easily, so am hoping for
a way to do it on Mac, or maybe a program that I could download that will do
this for me.

Thanks so much for your help.

Re: Jaksta

2011-04-17 Thread Lynn Schneider
Chris, here are a few of my thoughts on this. After you authorized the
program, did you try exiting it and then reopening it? Also, I'm not sure what
you mean when you say you clicked on a file. Were you trying to record
something from the internet or were you trying to convert a file that was
already on your hard drive? Of course, the way this program works is that when
you click the start button, its little nose sniffs around for media and tries
to capture it, and then when you are done, you click the stop button and its
little nose stops sniffing around for media. One thing that confused me was
that when I tried to capture a Youtube video, a few seconds into the capture,
it made a sound like it was stopping, so I thought maybe I had the same problem
as you, but actually, it did capture the whole thing after all.

I just purchased a license for this program yesterday. I did use a program
called Replay AV on the Windows side made by the same company, but I admit I've
just started working with the Mac equivalent, so I have a few things to figure
out myself, but I was able to successfully record a Youtube video just now.

Re: Accessible Weather Radio App for iOS devices

2011-05-01 Thread Lynn Schneider
Hi Frank. I think the one you are referring to is called Imap Weather Radio.
The direct App Store link is:
http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/imapweather-radio/id413511993?mt=8
I have this app. It costs 10 dollars. While it does do some helpful things,
in my opinion, it is not worth that much money unless they add more features in
the future, which they certainly might. The other day, when we had tons of
warnings and such, I did not hear one alert, and yes, I did have alerts turned
on. Others have had better luck though, so maybe it is just something I am
doing wrong.
