adding audio and WMA to itunes

2012-03-18 Thread Kirsten Edmondson
Hi, I have something I've downloaded to my Mac, it is an MP3 file, I would like
to put it onto my iphone to listen to on the go, how do I get it from downloads
into ITunes and then get it to sync to my phone?
Also, I have a CD with WMA files on which someone made me, again, I want to put
them onto my Iphone, but I can't either listen to them on my Mac or transfer
them. Can I change their format? How can I get them to play? How can I get them
to transfer to Itunes and thus play on my Iphone too?
Thanks
Kirsten.

navigation and formatting questions

2012-04-06 Thread Kirsten Edmondson
Hi all,
I ask the below questions because I can find no answer in the keyboard help,
the VO help or the Pages help. Though I'm sure they're there somewhere, I'm
just not looking in the right place.
1. General navigation question: Where are the page up/down and home/end keys
located on the MBP keyboard?
2. A pages specific question: how do I insert bullet point markers?
Many thanks.
Kirsten.

Re: navigation and formatting questions

2012-04-07 Thread Kirsten Edmondson
Thanks very much Chris. I shall try out the bullet points thing and see if it
works for me. Really I was looking for like how in word for Windows you can
write your list, then select it and then select bullet points. With your
command here, do I need to do that before I write each part of the list, or if
I select them and then press the command will that make them all bullets?
Thanks.

Tips for reading PDF documents on the Mac

2012-04-08 Thread Kirsten Edmondson
Hi all,
A few weeks ago, someone asked what was the best way of reading PDFs. I gave
some vague response, and though I can't remember who asked, I know it comes up
quite often, so, below I list more specific steps. I hope they help whoever
wanted to know.
1. Find your document in your folder system.
2. Press VO-M and navigate to the File menu.
3. Go down to the Open With menu.
4. Arrow right and then down to Safari.
5. Leave the document to open-this might take some time if it is large for
example-when it starts reading, arrow until you are in the window (rather than
in the other web functions such as add to reading list etc).
6. Interact with the window with the VO-Down Arrow-Shift command.
7. If you want to read line by line, try to get your reading setting to
'navigation', otherwise when you use the down arrow, you will be reading via
character or word.
8. Use the arrows to read up and down each line.
9. Close or quit when you are finished.
N.B.: the default setting for PDFs is Preview, which I personally find hard to
access.
This has worked for me so far most often.
I think I said to use Google Chrome last time I emailed, but I think I should
really have said Safari, as Chrome seems not to open the document in the same
way-often saying 'empty HTML' which Safari does not.
Kind regards
Kirsten.

Re: Tips for reading PDF documents on the Mac

2012-04-10 Thread Kirsten Edmondson
I haven't, but you raise a good point, I have never found it possible to read
PDF columns properly with Jaws and used to have to use fine reader to translate
into an MS Doc. The PDFs I am currently putting into Safari are mainly journal
articles-they have some tables and I don't think those read properly, but I
will try to remember to take a look at some PDFs in columns and see. I think
we're likely to have little success however, as it's about translating
graphical representation into words and a logical order to people-many of whom
don't have a great concept of layout and formatting.

So, although this does not seem to be happening, and that is an improvement,
I'm sorry to say there has been no amazing advancement. Tables in HTML are much
more navigable as they have titles and a clear structure, and obvious breaks
between columns. But when you turn a PDF into a safari-opened document, it
doesn't have the HTML functionality and thus just reads the table as text
rather than a separately navigable part of the page.
I still have to invest in Fine Reader for Mac, but probably that will solve
problems, in the mean-time, long-winded as it is, you either need to use your
memory, or do what Rafael does and rescan a printed document.
I wonder what it is about Kerzweil and Fine Reader that make tables possible,
whilst VO and Jaws can't read PDF docs properly ...

webpages question

2012-04-14 Thread Kirsten Edmondson
Hi all,
Three web-based questions below, I use Google Chrome and Safari
interchangeably, making you aware of that in case your answers are different
depending on the browser I'm using.
1. Is there a way to stop a webpage reverting to the top of the page when it
refreshes? When on the Tesco Grocery site, when I click add to basket it
refreshes the page and then I have to work my way down to where I was.
2. Conversely, is the trackpad gesture to get to the top of a webpage 3-finger
swipe up? I just can't seem to get it to do it ...
3. Finally, is there a way of getting a page to refresh? I have particular
problems with the Mastercard secure code/verified by Visa page which more often
than not refuses to load properly, to cancel or reload the page might mean
losing where I am or even paying twice and I don't want that. What I'm really
looking for is if there is a command like insert-escape for Jaws which will
make sure everything is brought up on the screen. I think this page in
particular is quite difficult to load and often I have to close it and go
through the whole thing again before I can confirm payment and write in my
code-and this often allerts my pushy bank who then decide it's fraud, when in
fact, it's a rubbish page not doing it's job properly.
Thanks all, advice much appreciated.
Kirsten.

audio with Perrien

2012-04-15 Thread Kirsten Edmondson
Hi all,
I downloaded this open source app so I could open WMA files. Chris B
recommended this the other day and I saw it again on Vic's open source apps
list. However, I don't think I've done it right. I went through the pref payne
but I didn't find a .app file to transfer to my applications folder. There's
only the pref payne, a txt doc about changes and a what's new rtf. What do I
need to do to get it to load successfully so I can open my files?
I had just begun to think I was getting the knack of the Mac :(
Thanks.

Mark,
As I already said, in the dmg folder there is no .app file. Only a
perian.prefPane (already used) readme.rtf and changes.txt
Shall I delete and redownload? I got it from the Perian website.
Confused why there is no .app file.
Thanks.

Re: Jumping to the top and bottom of the message list (Lion & Mac mail in classic view)

2012-04-16 Thread Kirsten Edmondson
Hi Esther,
Despite when I use function and the arrowes or function plus shift and the
arrowes it won't move anywhere. I have an MBP running Lion OSX. When I try them
in mail or in pages, they don't work. Any idea what I'm doing wrong? Do I have
mail set to the wrong view? I'm in the messages table and I arrow across from
status to conversation then from then subject then date, if that makes sense.
Thanks.

Help from those who were helping me convert WMA two weeks back …

2012-04-28 Thread Kirsten Edmondson
Hi all,
I'm still having trouble with this.
I have Flip and the snow leopard QT and the WMV thing which I can't remember
the name of. They all work, and when I insert my cd with WMA files on they play
on my mac beautifully. However, I can't seem to be able to export them to M4A
and transfer them to my itunes and thus onto my IPhone. I try export
cmd+shift+s and though it starts it always it says it can't complete. I've
tried opening itunes and copying the wma files but that doesn't seem to do
anything. I have tried creating a play list but copying into here doesn't work
either. I really want these to play on my iphone mostly, and though it's really
good to know that I can now get the Mac to work, I need to go one step further.
How can I alter them and how can I then transfer to my 3GS?
Many thanks.
Kirsten.

Re: Word count in Pages

2012-04-30 Thread Kirsten Edmondson
Mike,
In pages, go to edit, then Writing Tools, then Show Statistics and then a box
will open, I use the swipe on the trackpad to get to the wordcount area after
title and name and comments etc.
For spell check, do CMD+colon I think. CMD+semi-colon just checks that word I
think, while Cmd+colon checks the whole document. Any suggestions you have will
appear in a table, which you need to interact with if you have multiples,
otherwise you can just tab through to ignore or change if the word is already
selected. I'm not sure how to change the language, actually, this is something
I would like to know-for me, it's changing it from US English to UK English, it
keeps trying to change my our words to or and my ise words to ize.

Mac Mail question

Hi,
How do I move an email from trash back to the inbox? In the edit menu, there
doesn't seem to be a move to inbox command. I can't do undo as I deleted it a

interacted with the table and the message line and the actual message itself.
Thanks.

Converting wma to mp3 and playing on Downcast

2012-05-24 Thread Kirsten Edmondson
Hi all,
First, apologies for the cross posting. I've tried to resolve this problem, but
I can't seem too, can anyone help?
I have four wma files which I now can play on my mac using quick-time/perrien
However, I really want these folders (audio) to transfer to my phone, in a
podcast style. However, I can't change them to mp3 or m4a. When I try to export
them into m4a to subsequently add to itunes on the Mac it says this media must
be corrupted. It's fine. I tried renaming them as mp3 but that didn't work
either. Then I thought that if I tried exporting them from my dropbox app on my
iphone into downcast that might work, but of course, they are still in wma and
I can't get them to play there.
How can I get them into itunes so they will sync to my phone?
How can I get them into mp3 or m4a so I can if nothing else put them through
downcast and dropbox and get them on that way?
Can anyone help? I need simple instructions, cos clearly I can't get it to work
myself ...
Thanks.
Kirsten.

Found it thanks, am currently downloading, so cross your fingers for me. You
should have realised by now how lame I am.
Did anyone know there's a VueScan Mobile-suitable for IPhone and Ipad, probably
something I should advertise on VIPhone list rather than here ... it's free
apparently. ... Anyone know if it's accessible/useable? ... Guess I should

Time machine backup and time capsule

2012-05-26 Thread Kirsten Edmondson
Hi, I have just discovered that my time machine has not backed up to my time
capsule for a month. When I try to force it it says back up disk unavailable.
When I went to the help it said to go to airport utility which I did, but I
couldn't tell what was wrong. Also in help it said the password might have
changed. How do I access that ... it said to log in using the original password
created but I can't find how to log in. I assume it's some sort of webpage like
when you try to log into your router. I did have internet problems at some
point in April, perhaps a month ago and had to switch things off, so this might
be why. It's clearly still working as a router, but not to back up. Can anyone
direct me to the appropriate help page, or give me simple instructions to
follow to sort this out asap? Is it something I can do on my own with no
vission?
Thanks
Kirsten.

Re: Time machine backup and time capsule

2012-05-27 Thread Kirsten Edmondson
Hi,
I unplugged it and replugged in again as recommended. I still couldn't get it
to do a backup. I have tried to go into all the settings. I restarted it via
airport utility. Then it disappeared and I had to go and pull out the ether net
cables before it could recognise it again.
Now it appears as a disk and I have made sure it is my default. But now it's
complaining that it isn't part of the server.
In time machine menu too it says time machine not configured.
It's also saying system preferences busy and I can't seem to get it to do
anything!
Before I got to this stage, I wondered if I needed to update my airport
utility. Does the Mac automatically do that as part of the updates process? Cos
I can't find out how to update Airport Utility. I think this is probably an
obsolete question now as I think I've gone too far into messing up the whole
thing!
This is what happens when you trust your boyfriend to know everything about it
and then he becomes your ex ... 2 months later things like this happen and I am
none-the-wiser thanks to my own enforced ignorance!
HELP!

Re: Time machine backup and time capsule

2012-05-27 Thread Kirsten Edmondson
Hi,
I have no idea what I did or how it suddenly did this, but I spent several
hours going seemingly round in circles with it. Then suddenly, it started a
backup and not wanting to crow too soon, I waited and it finished after an hour
and a bit. I presume-hope-that all should be well now ... don't know what it
was playing at, and I will keep checking the tm menu to see about the last
backup. I'll keep your instructions Tim, in case it messes up again ...
Thanks.

Maintaining contacts and calendars question

2012-06-08 Thread Kirsten Edmondson
Hi all,

Probably the answer to this question is quite obvious, but I am seeking your
opinion, because I don't want to do any damage.

I have an MBP, iPad and 4S. I would like my contacts and calendars and notes,
to appear on all of them.

When I just had the Mac and a 3GS, I did not use iCloud. This was really
because when in my windows days a few months back, I wanted to use outlook for
keeping a record of my contacts and calendars etc, iCloud became a massive
duplication. This was very annoying. So I switched off iCloud and left a pc and
then my mac and the iPhone to do their thing.

However, for some reason now, I am having issues syncing my contacts and
calendar properly. I think it must be something to do with my iTunes. Can
anyone help?

I have recently used the multi edit app to sort out and organise my contacts on
my iPhone. These are not transferring to my iPad when I sync with iTunes. It
just has the old ones which have an extra 30 or 40 contacts I do not need.
Also, they are not syncing with my Mac. My address book is the same as it was
last week. Should I change a setting in iTunes? Or should I just use iCloud and
have it sort it all out for me. I'm worried about having duplications again
then. But, my major concern is my calendar, I have everything on there, and I
take it everywhere with me. However, I need it to sync on all the machines so
that wherever I am I have a clear record of what I need to be doing. Is it
likely, because my contacts are not syncing properly, that my calendar is doing
the same?

I am worried that if I use iCloud, I will end up losing everything.

Although iTunes is a pain, I know I can always get things back, if I lose
things, like I did last weekend.

If I use iTunes, what do I need to make sure my settings are in order for it to
work properly? When I checked the sync contacts etc box in iTunes, there are
lots of other checkboxes, and they seem to appear twice, four example notes,
calendar, and contacts, do I need to check them multiple times in order for it
to work properly?

Which is my dominant machine? For example my most up-to-date calendars and
notes and contacts are on my iPhone, but does my Mac think that it is the one
in charge? Is there a way of getting it so that whenever I sync to my iPhone it
replaces it on all of the machines so that that is always the latest version?
Is this what iCloud will do? I am terrified of having multiple different
versions of calendars and contacts et cetera and then ending up with the wrong
set at the wrong time.

What should I do? How do I sort out my settings?

I have sent this to both lists, so sorry for the duplications for people.

Many thanks
Kirsten

I love Fine Reader and I love the versitility of the Mac

Re: ABBYY fine reader

2012-07-02 Thread Kirsten Edmondson
You can demo this one. It's called abbyyfine reader express. That's the app I
mean. But you can download a demo, I think from their website, which allows you
either 15 days, I think or 15 tries, whichever comes first. It only allows you
to do a page at the time for this, but it gives you a good idea of how it works.

Re: Firefox on the Mac

2012-07-10 Thread Kirsten Edmondson
Hi,

I use Safari or Google Chrome on the Mac to access blackboard, both of these
are fine and there are no issues. I was of the understanding that Firefox does
not yet work other than a beyta version on the map, although I am looking
forward to the day when it does properly. For blackboard it is probably best to
use Safari for now, as although chrome is good, it's not totally there yet.
Though chrome is probably second to Firefox currently. But please someone
correct me if Firefox is fully available and accessible, because I would like
to use Firefox myself if it is usable now.

Installing mountain lion

2012-07-25 Thread Kirsten Edmondson
Hi all,
I plan to install ML on Friday or Saturday, when I come back from being away.
However, my Mac, which I got 10 months ago, came with Lion installed. So I've
never had to install anything big like this on a Mac before

I'm not very good at doing this sort of thing, so I wondered if there was a pod
cast or some tips which I could use when I install it so that I get it right.

Is there anything I need to do before I install?

Where do I put it?

Will it more or less do it for me? Or do I have to get it to do things.

If anybody could direct me in the right place that would be great.

Sounds totally inept and stupid I know… But…

There's no rush, as I said, I won't be doing it till the weekend.

Thanks.
Kirsten

Cool, thanks. Is the twitter rumour I've heard correct?-vm fusion does not work
...
I haven't yet sorted fusion. Was going to sort ml and then vm. But should I
wait?

Re: Installing mountain lion

2012-07-25 Thread Kirsten Edmondson
Apparently vm is fine.
I don't have iCloud set up, it scares me marginally more than iTunes with
regard to loss and salvation of my data.
Posts on list suggest its use is paramount. Should I set up iCloud before
install? Is its use necessary? If I set it up, any tips for not losing
everything from Mac, iPhone and iPad!?

Help calling apple please

2012-07-26 Thread Kirsten Edmondson
Hi all,
Is anyone able to tell me how I go about calling Apple? I'm in the UK. I need
to report a problem with my face time, it isn't working properly. And the only
way I can think of resolving it is to call them and ask them. I think I do have
AppleCare, but I have no idea how it works, as I never used it, and cannot read
the information. The AppleCare too is for my Mac, and the problem I am having
with face time is actually on my iPhone, is it still valid?

Really, I would like a phone number in the UK to call, where they might help me.

I know I can email the accessibility, but I would like to speak to a person.
Does anyone have any ideas or know where I could go to find a suitable phone
number?

Thanks
Kirsten

Re: Help calling apple please

2012-07-27 Thread Kirsten Edmondson
Thank you for the phone numbers everybody. I won't use my AppleCare, as I think
that is just for my Mac. I will try the UK number and ask if they will help me,
they either we'll all won't, it won't hurt to ask. If the worst comes to worst,
I will find my local Apple shop and go in there.

Mac mail help

2012-08-03 Thread Kirsten Edmondson
Hi all,
I quite often have an issue with my time capsule and my BT hub/modem and I lose
my internet/network and can only get it back once I've unplugged the time
capsule and plugged it in again. Earlier this week it was gone for several
hours before a lot of fighting with it fixed it. Actually I had to go onto
BT.com and reset my password (or rather, my dad had to as I couldn't because of
audio capture issues) ... Because my iphone had tried to connect to my email
three times, and failed, BT blocked me so I had to go in and reset my password
...
I had issues when I got it back with my iphone and my mac.
On my iphone I seem to have two mailboxes
one which seems to refer to my user name kirsten.edmondson and the other which
refers to my domain btinternet
I think it is similar with my Mac, and when I was trying to input my reset
password into my mac mail I found I didn't know what I was doing with mail.
I found the get mail button somewhere and pressed and for some reason that got
my mail coming in again and it's been fine since then.
But I have lost all my emails since before that time ... Although I regularly
delete, I like to keep some (those with usernames etc) and now they're all
gone.
Is there anywhere they are likely to be lurking? Or are they lost forever?
Aso, how do I go about changing my mail settings - if needed in future? (I'm
used to using outlook and this seems to be so totally different-not that I'm
seeking to compare, but thought it might be of use if you knew my background).
I think I am using pop3, should I be using that or imap?
I wonder if this is the reason for the different mail boxes? One is perhaps
imap and the other perhaps pop3? I have no idea which I'm using now, though it
looks the same as before except for the missing messages, but might I have
inadvertently entered the other one without knowing? I think I did go in
somewhere and put in my password, but that made no difference.
I feel a bit stupid about this, but I'm quite confused about how to work mail
properly and am not sure where to look in the help.

Any advice appreciated.
Thanks.
Kirsten
(PS. currently still on Lion, but moving shortly).

time machine help

2012-08-03 Thread Kirsten Edmondson
Hi,
My time capsule came unplugged. I plugged it in again and it seemed to be ok,
but when I went to the time machine menu the configured icon was dimmed. I've
found my disk but it now says it cannot connect to the time machine server and
that it can't find my backup disk.
I'm going to go onto mv archives as I'm sure there will be something in there
that will help me, but any immediate advice on how to get my time capsule, time
machine and my mbp talking together would be much appreciated.
I did a backup on Monday, but it doesn't seem to recognise that it exists. I
don't want to upgrade to ml until I have tm sorted and have done a successful
back up ... just in case ...
Thanks.

Re: Mac mail help

2012-08-03 Thread Kirsten Edmondson
So, as you suggested I've just been in the accounts part of the preferences ...
thanks for reminding me where to find it - obvious really ...
There's only one account there, the one which says btinternet and is apparently
an imap and says yahoo in the description
I am fairly certain this is different to before Tuesday, but there is
definitely only one account in the accounts table.
Should I be using pop3?
Thanks.
Kirsten.

Re: Mac mail help

2012-08-03 Thread Kirsten Edmondson
I was wondering if it should be pop3 on my mac, that way the mails would stay,
and imap on my 4s and ipad?
Does that sound the wrong way round?
As I only seem to have the imap version, would I need to add a new account if I
wanted to create, or recreate the pop3 version?
Don't want to mess up my email, but it seems odd that all the messages I was
keeping just went when I went to put in my password ...
Thanks.

Re: time machine sorted was time machine help

2012-08-03 Thread Kirsten Edmondson
Hi,
As subject says, I think I have managed to sort out my tm issue. Not sure how,
but got it to come up with my password and did a bit of wire jiggling and now
it's done a successful full backup! Fingers crossed that it keeps working!
I sadly have to say, I have a house full of Apple products, all of which I
love, except my time capsule, it seems to cause me no end of trouble, and seems
to die and drop off the network, or conflict with my network or break my
network at least once a month! :( Such a shame when it cost £250 ... on
principle I refuse to get rid of it, as it was a christmas present from my
ex-boyfriend ... though perhaps it just reflects our poor quality relationship
as was ... :(

Looking for the link for the list archives

2012-08-17 Thread Kirsten Edmondson
Hi,
I seem to have misplaced the link which was sent out about these list archives.
Recently, I tried to get into google groups, to read some emails from earlier
in the year. However, I was unable to access the Googlegroups site properly. I
think this is because it has been changed.
Is there a link to access Google groups as it was? Or is there a link which
will take me directly to the archives, and thus I can search easier?
I have a feeling that it is
Www.mail-archives.com/Macvisionaries.Googlegroups.com
Is this correct? Will this get me where I want to go?
Many thanks,
Kirsten.

captures and firefox question

2012-08-17 Thread Kirsten Edmondson
Hi,
Someone recently told me that the best way to solve captures is to get Firefox
and webvisum. However, I have thought, for a long time, that FF is inaccessible
for the Mac. Is this still the case?
Is this actually the best way to solve captures? If so, when I download both
applications, what do I need to do to get them to work together? If Firefox is
not fully accessible, how do I make it as accessible as possible?
Thanks in advance,
Kirsten

problem with VO in log on in ML

2012-08-18 Thread Kirsten Edmondson
Hi all,
Since upgrading to ML two days ago, Funny things have been happening during log
on.
First I have to do cmd5 to switch vo on, after waiting for it to kick in for a
while. Instead of Samantha (my default) Alex arrives and welcomes me to vo. I
have to interact with the dialogue box and then click on a button that is my
name. It seems to suggest myself or a guest. Then I am able to put in my
password. It then logs in and Samantha starts.
I have read the messages from July and have been into the users and logins
options in system preferences, but there seems to be only me there and no way
of asking it to have vo work or deleting anyone else.
I have been in vo utilities and there does not seem to be a checkbox for having
vo start automatically prior to log in-which is what I had in lion. Instead the
first available setting is about togelling vo with cmd5.
Can anyone help me find the setting I need to change as this whole log in
process is quite convoluted currently.
Many thanks,

activating links

2012-08-18 Thread Kirsten Edmondson
Hi all,
It seems that I am no longer able to activate a link in an email for example by
doing vo/space or enter. I have tried putting my cursor on it and selecting it
before trying to activate it, but simply nothing happens.
I have to copy and paste it into the address bar.
Is this fault general, or am I doing something wrong?
Does it have something to do with my changing my default browser from Chrome to
Safari?
When I did this, I did it from the browser, is there another way to tell the
mac to use Safari as the default web browser and to be used to open links?
Many thanks,

Re: captures and firefox question

2012-08-18 Thread Kirsten Edmondson
Hi Teresa,
Am I correct that when using this to solve captures, the way to go about it
would be to paste the link of the page the capture is on into this version of
firefox? That way I only use it for just the captures.
Is there an alternative way of doing it?
Thanks.

Re: captures and firefox question

2012-08-18 Thread Kirsten Edmondson
Hi,
I have got the nightly version of FF now, but I am having trouble with the
extensions. I can't seem to get webvisum. There isn't a search box, or at
least, vo can't find it, or it isn't labelled. Can I get it from the company
and download, would that work just as well? Nightly is "busy" almost all the
time, an d is so slow.
Suggestions.
Thanks.

Question about spam emails

2012-08-21 Thread Kirsten Edmondson
Hi,
Apologies for cross posting but my question is relevant to both lists.
I regularly pull in my email using both mac and iPhone. Though I delete
everything irrelevant based on the subject line and without opening, I am
increasingly noticing an upsurge of spam.
I am trying to move from BT (essentially yahoo) to gmail-which I understand is
much better regarding spam. I am unable to do this currently without sighted
assistance.
Until then, are there any accessible apps or program's I could for mac mail or
iPhone mail that would eradicate such junk?
Thanks.

Urgent help with a podcast-recording app

2012-08-22 Thread Kirsten Edmondson
Hi all,
I need to record some podcasts. A few weeks ago I found and successfully used a
podcast app on the Mac. But now, I can't find it! :( I thought it was in
utilities but it isn't there any longer.
Does it still exist in ml? If not, can I get anything for recording podcasts on
my Mac that is free? I know about audio hijack pro, but I don't want to pay as
I only do rare podcasts-but don't want to use the free ahp version because I
need it to be good quality and it might end up being longer than 10 mins.
Please help me solve my stupidity!
Many thanks.

I'm still getting the same message. Is it because when I registered this Mac on
my dropbox account when I installed I renamed the computer, so maybe it doesn't
recognise it? If so, How do I rename it to what it thinks it should be? Should
I just uninstall and reinstall? And if so how do I do that?

Skype and VO

2011-11-18 Thread Kirsten Edmondson
Hi,
I have finally got Skype to work! Yipee!
However, I'm having VO trouble …
It talks too much and is really annoying when I'm on a call, so I switch it
off, but for some reason, I can't get it back on again after the call has
ended, I have to reboot the Mac first … and press the key stroke several times
… can anyone advise how I can mute VO quickly for while I'm on a call, and
particularly how I get it back afterwards?
Also is there somewhere I can go for the key combination commands for Skype?
Like hanging up and particularly answering a call? I can't seem to find a list
and I've looked in the Apple, Skype and File menus with no joy …
Thanks.
Kirsten.

Still having dropbox issues

2011-11-24 Thread Kirsten Edmondson
Hi, I'm still not having any luck with dropbox.
I got a response from the tech guys at dropbox.com and he said I should try
unlinking and re-linking my dropbox so that hopefully I would then get access
to all my files-as it is currently empty and I know it's quite full in reality.
He said to go
1) Right click the Dropbox icon in the system tray at the bottom right of your
screen, by the clock on Windows or menu bar at the top of your screen on Mac.
2) Select 'Preferences'
3) Click the Account tab and then the 'Unlink' button

So where is this menu bar/icon he's talking about? I know exactly what he's
talking about regarding Windows, but not for Mac.
If I open dropbox in the applications window it says 'dropbox has no windows'
and every time I try to get to preferences it says 'finder preferences'.
Thanks.
Kirsten.

sending to multiple addresses

2011-12-02 Thread Kirsten Edmondson
Hi,
In the Mac's mail program, how can you get it to send to multiple addresses?
And how can you choose who to send to if you have more than one address-for
example in Outlook there is a to … button which you can press and then choose
from your address book; when you've selected it will put it in the to field and
then return you to the message-anything like this on the Mac?
Kirsten.

Re: sending to multiple addresses

2011-12-02 Thread Kirsten Edmondson
All your answers make total sense, but I just can't get it to work. I've tried:
Putting in a comma in between addresses;
Putting in a semi-colon between addresses;
Putting a return in between;
Pressing space or double tapping on the trackpad when the address I want comes
up;
moving off the field and then back on;
Using to and CC boxes;
But every time I try to type the second address (even after it's said the
address menu button), if I type another address it says "selection deleted" and
I can't get to keep the addresses.
What am I doing wrong?
My address book is set up cos all my contacts came from my phone, and when I
type in an email address; it knows who I mean after the first few letters and
puts it in, it's just when I accept it and type the second one it replaces the
first with that, or sometimes merges them, despite commas or semi-colons or
returns or spaces.

Brilliant! I understand now-it's a glitch and it works exactly the way you

accessing notes

2011-12-22 Thread Kirsten Edmondson
Hi,
I used to sync my notes from my IPhone onto my outlook. Since I have got a Mac,
I have just accessed them through my phone, but I assume there must be a way of
reading them on the Mac too? Where will I find my notes? Is it in the email
program? Or in ITunes, or in somewhere totally separate?
Anyone know?
Thanks.
Kirsten.

Audible and iTunes on the Mac

2011-12-22 Thread Kirsten Edmondson
Hi, since transferring from my windows machine to my Mac I have lost all my
audible books. I can download them again no problem but I want them to go into
my iTunes and thus onto my IPhone. I found a thing in apple menu under services
which says something like add to iTunes as a spoken track. Do I find my
downloaded book in the downloads section and then click on this in the menu in
order to get it to the right place? Or is there something else, or something
simpler I should do?
Thanks.

partitioning my Mac

2011-12-22 Thread Kirsten Edmondson
Hi all,
I need to use Windows for work and the easiest way to do this is to bootcamp or
vmfusion my Mac. Is this easy to do? I heard that VM Fusion was better, how
much does it cost? Can I just get it from Mac apps store? Does boot camping
work just as well? (to save money, if that will work I'm happy to do that for
now).
What do I need to know or need to have handy before I start?
Thanks.

reading pdfs question

Hi,
Is there an easy way to read PDFs on my Mac? I use the preview thing it tries
to open them in but I can only read small sections and it seems to want to read
them all in one go. I used to use fine reader and make them into word docs (on
windows machines) so I will prob buy that soon for the Mac, but in the
mean-time is there a free/cheap and quick way of reading PDF files on the Mac?
Thanks.

help, problem with mac arrow keys

2012-01-06 Thread Kirsten Edmondson
Hi,
Something funny has just started happening. When I try and use the arrow keys
inside the mail it says row expanded, or row collapsed, I can't seem to get to
the status or conversation boxes etc. I think I must have pressed something but
I have no idea what. How can I get it back to normal? I have closed down and
reopned and that's made no difference.
Thanks.
Kirsten.

Re: Pages

2012-01-08 Thread Kirsten Edmondson
I have created a document in pages and done my editing, but to submit it I need
to export it to word. I have a few questions.
1. I split my pages document into sections, but it has added in new pages every
time. I didn't notice this til I was loking at it in word, but I can't seem to
change it. Does anyone know how to get rid of them in word 2003, or can I
import it into pages again. Will this damage my formatting? Can I then get rid
of the section breaks?
2. Are there any tips in spell-checking in pages, IE. useful commands etc?
3. How do I change the font/size, does pages have Times New Roman and if so, is
there a way to make this my default font instead of the hilvetica thing?
Is there useful podcasts on pages?
Thanks.

Looking for a couple of programs

2012-01-08 Thread Kirsten Edmondson
Hi all,
In my mission to get the Mac running more perfectly and so I have to use the PC
a lot less, I am looking for a couple of things, and if anyone can advise me it
would be good.
Can you use another web client other than Safari? Or can this only be done when
Bootcamp or VMFusion is running? I heard something about Firefox not working on
a Mac but Google Chrome being good. What are people's impressions and how would
I go about it?
I struggle with PDF files, is there any program to get them to read ok?
I heard something a while back that you could get fine reader for Mac. Now I
have got my scanner working, I would like to get hold of FR for Mac. How would
I go about this and is there anything I need to know?
Many thanks as always!
Kirsten.

Subject: problems with abby fine reader express and my epson scanner

Hi, guys. I purchased the abby fine reader express program from the app
 store.
I was having problems with my epson 4490; so decided to uninstall it from
the print and scan dialog. However, it shows up twice in the abby program
where one selects whether to do the conversion from a file from the
scanner and I have no idea how to totally remove the epson drivers from my
mac so I can either get a new scanner or try reinstalling them again.
Also, one would think that since I removed the epson from the print and
scan dialog that it shouldn't still show up twice in abby.
Any ideas how to remove this from abby so I can start again?

Mac app store help

2012-02-05 Thread Kirsten Edmondson
Hi all,
I'm struggling how to find out how to update my apps using the Mac app store.
There doesn't seem to be an update link like there is on the IPhone store.
Also, I can't find a search box either, so I can't seem to find anything.
Any tips on how I could do both these things?

Mastercard secure code and the Visa ones when paying on webpages

2012-02-13 Thread Kirsten Edmondson
Hi all,
Is it possible to use the verified by Visa or Mastercard Secure Code security
systems on webpages? I'm having trouble using my mac on the Tesco.com groceries
website and can't get past the mastercard secure code page, I can't find the
edit box to put in the password and though I have it set to form elements it
doesn't find it, just trying to type in my code makes it return to the checkout
page. Of course, it could just be something up with the said page, but I'm
worried that it's a mac thing, how do we get around this? Loads of websites
have it, but I have to say, I haven't come across it til now.
Thanks.
Kirsten.

Net flicks and apple tv questions

2012-02-16 Thread Kirsten Edmondson
Hi,
I have an apple TV, so was investigating net flicks. Is it useable? Is it worth
it/good? Can you get audio-described films?-Love Film don't do them through
their streaming option.
I would like to know more about Apple TV too, are there any of Mike's great
podcasts on it? Is there anywhere in particular, except for apple site which
might be good to go to learn more about the versitility of Apple TV?
Thanks,
Kirsten.

Re: Reading PDFs?

2012-02-21 Thread Kirsten Edmondson
I have started selecting the file I want from the folder by interacting with
the table and putting the cursor on the file and then uninteracting. I then go
VO+m and into open with. This brings up a list of programs, I think the first
one is preview and that's selected, you want to select something like Safari or
Chrome if you have it, press enter and it'll open fine. Much easier to read.
You have to do it every time though, as I haven't worked out how to set it to
open PDFs that way as default.

Mac and iCloud settings

2013-01-29 Thread Kirsten Edmondson
Hi,
I have two extra inboxes in my Mac Mail(me.com and Icloud.com) which are
causing me problems. First of all, I have one particular person who's emails
are for some reason going into one of those boxes and no where else and I don't
know why, 2, it seems to default my send-from account as my me.com account and
I do not want this, I either want my btinternet or my gmail to be my default
send-from and to addresses.
Do I need them? Can I hide them or stop them trying to dominate?
Also, even though I have icloud set up on all my devices, I can't get my mac
contacts to update, I need the ones from my iphone to replace the ones on the
mac, how can I instigate this? Can I get my mac to access my last iphone icloud
backup so it uses that information?
Thanks,
Kirsten.

Re: OT: iOS 6 Disappointment!-iBooks store & App Store

2013-02-16 Thread Kirsten Edmondson
Cherree I have to agree with Ricardo and others. I'm not totally sure what
you're talking about here, but I think you're getting to head up. I have to
admit, I struggled to use the iBookstore for a long time, but that was just
because I didn't give it the time to work it out. There are no problems, except
that sometimes it jumps and stops reading and jumped off the page, but that is
easy to solve the two or three fingers swipe usually does the trick. As for
finding books that's easy, and yes you do have to double tap to find more
information, but why is that a problem? Similar with the App Store, if you want
more info you double tap on the heading, but why is that a problem, perhaps you
have to go back a page to be able to access the results but so be it. It's
still a lot more accessible than it was when iOS six first came out. It's still
a lot more accessible than if we didn't have voice-over at all! I'm not saying
Apple accessibility aren't without their issues, but as others have said, email
their accessibility people. They are very helpful, and they try to make amends.
Yes, I am very annoyed currently about the jumping in Safari which continues,
and which I find on both my iPhone and iPad. I'm not sure who to report that
too, as I'm not sure it'll accessibilityan thing, And I think it has been
reported before, but still, I will report it and hope that in the next release
it is updated and improved. I'm sorry to say, but you seem to be having a
nonsensical rant about, well, nothing here…

Reading between the lines here Ray your message seems to suggest it's easier

audio versionsare next to useless these days anyway! They are such poor quality!

Re: Capture solving

2013-02-22 Thread Kirsten Edmondson
Hi,
I am having a right evening of trying out captcha services!
I found ZCaptcha took a long time and then even though it said it was 100%
certain it didn't work when i pasted in the code.
I just go round in circles.
So then I tried Rumola. I downloaded the extension; activitated it fine and
then had the notification when I went on the webpage I am trying to get into
that it would fill in the captcha. It did. But yet again, the page said I
needed to do it properly.
Now I can't get Rumola to work again. How do I make it work? I set it up to
notify me, but it won't notify me or fill in the box after that one first time.
What should I do? Why am I so bad at using these programs to solve captchas?
The website I am trying to register on is
www.pof.com (plenty of Fish) has anyone had any success with registering-or
anyone else been unable to?
Captchas are so discriminatory!
Any help would be appreciated!
Kirsten.
