Setting Sound Output for Log in Screen

2012-04-24 Thread James Lee

Hi,

How can I set sound output for internal speaker during log in screen? I
have more than one output device, internal speaker, sound flower, and
external sound card.
Sometimes, VoiceOver switches to a different sound output during log in
screen. I can't hear anything especially when it switches to sound flower.
Once I'm logged in, it switches back to the sound output that I set in
the user account though.

Thanks,

JL

Re: Setting Sound Output for Log in Screen

2012-04-24 Thread James Lee

HI Ricardo,

I wish it worked that way for Snow Leopard too. Even if I set the sound
output to the internal built in speaker and reboot, it goes back to a
different output during log in.

I wonder if there's a way to set it in terminal or something.

Selecting Destination For restoring on Disk Utility

2011-11-18 Thread James Lee

Hi,

I'm trying to restore a partition from a CCC image using disk utility.
When I go to the restore tab, I can click the image button and select
the image file created by CCC, but I cannot drag the partition to a
destination field.
I wiped out my entire internal hard drive in order to partition my
internal hard drive for my need and start from scratch, so I cannot use
CCC to restore. Only option I have is to restore using the disk utility
from the lion installation flash drive.
However, drag and drop function on lion Voice Over doesn't work on this
case. It says something like drag and drop failed. I also tried the old
drag and drop method with vo+shift+space, but it doesn't work either.
I searched the archive, and someone mentioned that there is a podcast on
this topic. However, I couldn't find any link for the podcast. I'd
really appreciate if someone can either explain how I can select
destination for restoring on disk utility or send me the link to the
podcast.

Thanks,

JL

XCode Busy

2015-05-21 Thread James Lee

Hi,

I'm trying to give XCode a try again. I didn't have this problem when I
used it with Mountain Lion a couple of years ago. However, Voiceover
gets stuck and keeps saying busy. Only way is to quit XCode and rerun.
It happens so frequently that it makes it impossible to navigate to
different parts of screen.

I'm using XCode 6.3.2 on Yosemite 10.10.3.
Does anyone have this problem? Is there a workaround for this?
Thanks,

JL

Fastest Way to Scan Books?

2013-09-24 Thread James Lee

Hi All,

I'm wondering what would be the fastest way for a college student to
scan books with accurate OCR?
I know there are cameras out there for scanning documents like hover cam
and pearl, but I haven't actually used them.

I could be wrong, but pearl is only works with Open Book, right?
Can someone share their experience, and recommend what to buy?
Especially comparison would be very helpful.
Thanks so much,

Hi Anne,

Thanks for the suggestion.
This is true, scanners with automatic document feeder are much faster

What if you can't take books apart. What would be the best solution?

This does however mean buying two applications to get the job done. If you

This solution meets the requirement of being the fastest, but it falls over in
a few ways.

first, a double sided sheet feeder is an expensive proposition, even though you
can probably find a voscan compatible one. If you're in a commercial setting
such as a university transcription service you might be able to justify the
cost, but for an individual it doesn't really make that much sense.

Second, you have to cut the books. The books themselves can be quite
expensive. I preferred to double up with my classmates when I was in college.
I scanned some one else's book pertimes because the books costed between 70 and
150 dollars a piece. You may want to resell the books and get some of your
money back later. Again, if you're a professional transcription service this
might be a good bet, but for an individual it's not really the way to go.

Third, While there are good tutorials on making the whole
voscan/readiris/finereader system work done by knowledgeable people in plain
language, the fact of the matter is, setting up the duel software system
initially takes a bit of extra overhead. I've never been much tempted myself.
$200 to get two pieces of software and merry them together is reasonable enough
on cost, but I know that most of my clients are not happy with the idea of two
programs to do one job.

I like the camera system myself. I'm not a professional transcription service,
so the idea of taking half an hour to scan a book that used to take me three
hours really doesn't faze me. The camera is portable so I can take it on the
road if I want. I can also fold it out of the way to save desk space if I need
to. I use an eyepal, because I had access to funding and because I got a
corporate discount on it through my access technology company. I haven't had
great experiences with it under windows, but on the mac it seems to work really
well despite not being designed well at all from a software standpoint. I also
have a hovercam T5V. While I mostly use it under windows with k1000, it can
also be used with docuscan plus on the mac. Docuscan is cloud based and I'm
not very happy with that aspect of it, but I like the hovercam hardware better
than the EyePal. It feels sturdier and it's cheeper. Not to mention the
docuscan software is actually built for mac as opposed to the jury-rigged
eyepal approach. Out of pocket, docuscan and the hovercam are cheeper than the
eyepal. If your alternative is an industrial grade double-sided sheet feeding
scanner, then docuscan and a hovercam are going to be cheeper than that as
well. If you don't mind splicing sets of pages together and you buy a consumer
grade single sided sheet feeder, you could get one for a reasonable price. I
don't think it would be as fast as a camera, but it would be less maintenance
because you wouldn't have to flip pages manually.

Hope this helps,

ScanSnap, Scanning Solution?

2014-11-26 Thread James Lee

Hi All,

Does anyone use ScanSnap? I'm thinking about iX500.
How is their software accessible on Mac or Windows?
Because they don't support twain, most OCR software like abbyy,
kurzwhile, or Openbook can't access the scanner directly.
It looks like I have to scan using their software, export into pdf, and
import back to OCR software.
I tried Hovercam t5v solution. Even though their software was
accessible, result is not as good as flat-bed or document scanner.

Thanks for help!

Yes, I agree! The developer is awesome, and he's very quick!
While back, I asked him to implement function+space as left mouse click

OpenOffice or iWorks are pretty much the main alternatives but are
imperfect in a number of ways, but generally not enough to warrant
running a VM and Windows and Jaws/NVDA.

While I don't use it, many people seem to like the iCal app that comes
with OSX. This article details getting iCal, Oracle Cal, Google Cal
and your iPhone calendar all to sync. I'm sure a little googling would
turn up more:

Focus 40 Blue With Mac

2011-08-24 Thread James Lee

Hi,

I can pare my Focus 40 Blue with my iPhone over Bluetooth, but I can't
do pare it with my Macbook Pro. I tried with regular Macbook, but it
doesn't work either.

After I type for passkey, VoiceOver says it failed to pare.
My Bluetooth is on, and I can see Focus 40 Blue in the Bluetooth status
menu.

Does anyone know what the problem would be?
Thanks,

JL

Running Internet Radio on Mac

Hi,

Is there any accessible radio app that let me host an internet radio

I used to broadcast on ShoutCast using EdCast on Windows, but I'm
wondering if there's any option on Mac.

Hi guys,

Is there a way to accessibly edit MIDI events in Garage Band? I'm
looking for a kind of equivalent to the event list view in Sonar. Does
Garage Band have anything like this? I want to be able to change the
length, pitch, velocity, and position of notes in a track. If Garage
Band won't cut it, would I be able to use either Logic or Pro Tools?

Voiceover Crashing My Mac

2016-06-25 Thread James Lee

Hi

I run OSX 10.115 on iMac 5k 27 inch late 2015.
I'm having a problem Voiceover crashing my computer. I use just Alex voice.
Screen just goes black and reboots.
If someone does the exactly same task without Voiceover, it doesn't happen.
For example, adding input files in xcode project > build phases > Run
Script.
Also it doesn't happens 100% all the time.
Looking at /Library/Logs/DiagnosticReports, there are bunch of coreaudiod
and a couple of kernel files.
Inside ~/Library/logs/DiagnosticReports, there are bunch of xcode and
voiceover files.
Based on the files, it might have to do with sound device, but I just use
system built-in output.
I never had this problem before. Maybe it's the latest OSX update. It
reminds me Windows. I'm not impressed with Apple lately.
Does anyone have a problem where Voiceover just stops talking, and the
computer reboots?
Thanks,

Thanks for the suggestions.

I don't think it is a string issue. Voiceover reads fine what goes into
the field, and I can't duplicate 100% of the time.

I'll downgrade and see what happens.

Thanks again,

Voiceover Won't Speak while Fresh Installing Sierra
