Lynx for mac terminal
I have a compiled copy of lynx the text only web browser I use in terminal. This particular version does not support https secure functions on the net. Does anyone know of a compiled version that does have this and where to get it? Xpdf for mac
I tried to install the macport version of xpdf. The universal version is: xpdf 3.02pl5 I get an error message saying the "3.02pl5" dependency is not present. Has anyone install this package? It is for use in terminal and converts the text in a pdf file into text among other things. Some help with vlc
I have installed vlc and want to use it from the command line in terminal. As is no doubt known, it is a very complex application with many functions. All I want to do at this point is to give a command and have a mp3 file played. The same with a streaming audio source and podcasts is of interest. I have tried to do the mp3 function using what I gleaned from the man page and some online discussion, no joy. Can you help please? Copy to a flash drive from terminal
How does one identify the name of an attached flash drive when in terminal? I assume that to copy files to it the usual copy command with the name of the drive as destination will do it. If you could provide an example command using a dummy drive name it would be helpful. Please add information and correction as needed. Downloading and uncompressing bard books in mac
Using terminal from within the browser lynx I downloaded a bard book. This is the name of the file: DB-Fleming, Note it ends in a comma. That is the author's name preceeded by "db". It is my understanding that before one moves the contents to a flash drive for use in the nls machine it must be uncompressed. On a web page describing doing this in the mac gui it talks about "unzipping" the book first. I assume this is a generic reference because the file does not indicate it is a "zip" file. Renaming it with a zip extension doesn't help when I use unzip on it. The program says it is not a zip file. I would like to perform all this in terminal if at all possible. What compression scheme is used and how can it be uncompressed? Can the uncompression the mac gui uses be run from the command line? Can the open command be used with it somehow? What is the name of the program? Thanks for any info or help, Dan XB IC|XC -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "MacVisionaries" group. Unmounting flash drives in terminal
I have recently been fooling around with flash drives in terminal for downloading nls digital books. When a flash drive is inserted in a usb port the name of the product appears in /Volumes like a directory. Because I have two flash drives I renamed the brand name of each to another to describe the items to be put on them. I used the mv command to rename the flash drive. I then placed the books in it. When the drive was removed the books were on it and were played by the nls digital machine. Now when i put one of the flash drives in, the original brand name appears along with the renamed drives as described above. The renamed drives are empty. The drive with brand name has the books placed there originally in one of the renamed drives. They appear as empty directories but cann't be deleted. So, how can one rename a flash drive and how can I get rid of the original names I chose for the brand name. I have tried umount with no luck. Maybe there is another better command or my syntax is off. What would be a proper command to remove the renamed but empty drives? Thanks. Re: Calibrating The iPhone Battery
Hello, A few things. 1. None of this is in the iPhone guide. 2.Infact I called Apple and was told that the device and software totally manage battery health and that it isn't necessary to calibrate the battery. Now, after saying that, I have made it a point to occasionally discharge the battery to shutdown and then after a while more than an hour reconnect and charge completely. I am sure that at one time this was really necessary, but according to apple, as of iOS 9.0, this is no longer necessary. Unfortunately, I don't know who I spoke with. Re: T-Mobile launches true 4G LTE Micro Cell spot
Hello, We got this cel booster about 2 months ago and We love it. We have 3 phones on our account and we get usually around -69 DB or around 4 Bars, if you will. Between the devices, the coverage is fantastic. So you have 2 units. 1 unit goes near a window where the best available signal is found and the other unit is placed somewhere in your home to get complete coverage. The only thing is that you need a sighted person to read the displays to determine where the best placement is. But once you have them in place, that's the end of it and you don't ever need to be concerned any more about how the units are working. The units are identical in looks so you have to make sure that the units are placed accordingly. Re: T-Mobile launches true 4G LTE Micro Cell spot
Hi, They are on the Cell network and your home Wi-Fi calling will work just fine and the LTE works great. All you do is plug in the base unit where your signal is strongest, near a window and the second unit is place somewhere in your space for best coverage. The best coverage is between these units. Both units are AC powered and do not have batteries. Also, in order for them to work, you must have at least 1 bar, or somewhere around -120 DB or so in the worse case. Clearing Up Some Confusion Re: ICloud
Hi, folks, There are some aspects of ICloud that are available in beta now, as was announced in the keynote address. One is the ITunes IBook store, which lets you purchase books on your computer and have books automatically downloaded on your IOS4.3.3 device. You can set this up in settings/store on the device, and you can choose what you want automatically downloaded: music, books, and apps. This works with ITunes 10.3 and IOS4.3.3. There are other things that won't be available till IOS5 comes out in the fall. Here's the page that spells it out: http://www.apple.com/icloud/features/ I know I did a good deal toward contributing to the confusion, and just wanted to do what I could to clear it up. :) Teresa -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "MacVisionaries" group. Re: Vuescan question
Hello, Either reboot, or highlight the volume and press command E to eject the volume. When you open dmg files, they are opened in a volume and after you either install or place the application in your apps folder, you can then remove the volume. However, on another note, don't run the app from the volume that was created when you opened the dmg file, always remember to either run the installer, or copy the application to where you want it before running. Re: VueScan working great for OCR
Hello, After test driving VueScan, this is my feeling about it. The only thing that's keeping me from purchasing VueScan is that it doesn't have an auto orientation feature. Call me picky, I guess, but I really don't want to full around with setting the orientation every time, especially if I'm not always sure that pages are always in the same orientation. Example, mail that has already been removed from the envelope and has been for what ever reason separated and may not all be in the same orientation. While it's a little more involved, as far as scanning is concerned, when I use save in pdf image, with my HP PhotoSmart C7280 printer and ABBYY Fine Reader Express, I don't ever need to worry about the orientation. Re: Visual input concerning screen brightness.
Hello Esther and list, Thanks for shedding a little more or less light on this subject! Grinnn! Actually, all joking aside, this information really is interesting. Over several years and on a number of lists, the thing about controlling screen brightness and things like the screen curtain have come up again and again. My final comment is this. It really would be nice if Apple provided a method for directly shutting off the back lighting on the desktop computers or substantially reducing it below what is currently possible. Perhaps there might be some hidden way to further manage these kinds of settings through OS X 7's terminal. A while back, I was searching for some way to do something like this through terminal, but I didn't find anything.. Re: e-pub
Hello, I have mo problem what so ever reading ePub materials on my iPod Touch 4th generation. However, I've not found anything that will read protected ePub documents such as iBooks on the Mac. There are a few applications for reading unprotected ePub on the mac, but I think you have to pay for the feature to work and I'm not sure I want to pay for this at this time. It really would be nice to have a free app that would at the verry least, read iBooks protected ePub formated materials on the Mac. Dan On Jun 30, 2011, at 12:42 PM, John W. Just my thoughts regarding CCC Carbon Copy Cloner
Hello List, JUst some thoughts on prepairing for Lion. I set up CCC (Carbon Copy Cloner) and I really love it. It's extremely easy to use and it's 100% accessible for VO users. Not only is it easy to make a complete clone, or a incremental backup, it's also really easy to boot from and use it on the external drive. The log details are well written andeasy to understand. Restoring the original drive is also really easy to do. CCC is produced on a shareware kind of concept and it uses a donation request field. This is available within CCC as well as on the site. http://www.bombich.com/ So, why am I posting this? In light of Lion's upcoming launch, I just wanted to really be prepared. No matter what you use as a backup utility, CCC or Super Duper or any other backup package, I strongly suggest that you cover all bases and be completely ready for the new exciting move to Lion! Re: Just my thoughts regarding CCC Carbon Copy Cloner
Hello Christopher, Have fun getting CCC to work for you, I think you'll love it. Here's a little hint for all us VoiceOver users. Once you've set up CCC and have entered your password to start what ever process you are using, for example, a complete clone, here's a way to make sure you are able to track what's going on. After the process has started, just toggle VO off then back on. Then you will be in the actual results window. I've tried using the keyboard to switch to the actual activity window, but for some reason, I cant get it to work. So again, just toggle VO off and then back on to be where the action is. Then just VO right or left to examine the different parts of the activity as it's taking place. In the past, I've used Super Duper and Time MAchine. So I decided to take a really close look at CCC. In my humble opinion, CCC tops them all. Again, just how I see it. HTH! Dan On Jul 7, 2011, at 9:37 AM, Christopher-Mark Gilland wrote: > Wow, Dan! Thanks for such a great heads up about CCC. Re: Just my thoughts regarding CCC Carbon Copy Cloner
Hello, You can make different backups. Generally speaking, CCC completely copies your drive from one drive to another. Not just one file, the actual clone. Of course you can also backup to dmg files as well and restore as well, this would give your single file inclosure. The documentation is concise and really clearly lays out all the scenarios for backup and restore. HTH! Hello, After you start CCC and have everything set up for your incremental backup You would probably have to examine the table that contains everything to be backed up and just select what you want. Hello, No problem at all. While I know that many people really love Super Duper, that wasn't my experience. I had some really funky things go drastically wrong with Super Duper a few years back and so I shied away from it. Plus I like the completely uncluttered screen in CCC. I don't know that this really has anything to do with it or not, but over the years, I've done a lot within the Unix and Linux environments, as well as really getting in to the terminal in OS X. HTH! Hello, This is true. After the computer restarts, after a short while, just press Command F5 and Fred will be more than willing to guide you. Re: Making an Install Flash Drive for Lion: Tutorial Link
Hello, I followed the instructions in Disc utility and as far as the drag and drop, I got as far as setting the drive to be drug, but it never completed the drag. Then once I got it to complete, but then it became the source destination. This whole drag and drop thing is really iffy at best. I have Lion on a DVD, but for what ever reason, I am totally unable to get the dmg file to properly be placed on the flash drive. I have never had any problem with dealing with image files and using disk utility. Does any one have any suggestions for doing the whole process of putting the install dmg file on the flash drive as a bootable drive, I don't mean the part about creating the partition and stuff, I mean the restore part, it just isn't working at all. A Big Pluss for VoiceOver in Lion!
Hello List, Here is one of many reasons why I'm glad I upgraded to Lion. Remember that in Snow Leopard, even though I loved that beast, VO would often times loose focus when switching between folders. Well, no longer under Lion. Hello All, This is a question for those of you who have done both an upgrade of Lion and then a clean install of Lion. Given the different problems that have been discussed on the list, not including the new features of Lion, I'd like to know this. If any, what differences have you noticed between an update and a clean install? TIA a bunch for any observations. Re: Why use a TrackPad?
Hello, I have a trackpad for my iMac and I also have an iPod Touch 4th generation. The biggest difference between the multi gesture trackpad and the touch screen on an iOS device is that all functions are done directly on the screen of the iOS device, except where the home button is used. On the Mac, the track pad is used in conjunction with the booster keys on the keyboard, Shift, Control, Option and such. While I do use my trackpad, mostly I use the full keyboard. The trackpad is really useful while on web pages, for example. You cannot use the trackpad to do actual virtual keyboard entry, as you do on the iOS devices. While I have an Apple Bluetooth keyboard to use with my iPod Touch, I usually use the touch screen instead. I only use the keyboard when I'm going to be dewing lots of typing on the Touch. Hope this gives a little more insight. Re: issue with google chrome
Hello, Just my thoughts regarding web browsing and other problems. When you think it is related to VoiceOver, please please email accessibil...@apple.com and provide them with a detailed report on what you were doing when the problem occurred and what the actual problem is. Even though you may or may not get a response, again please don't forget to contact Apple. Also, use the report bugs to Apple menu item in Safari to report problems as well. Another thing to do is this. If you have AppleCare, please contact technical support and report your problem.I suggest that after you speak with the first representative, ask to talk with a product specialist. In this way, your support request will be escalated further up the chain to engineers. I know that sometimes it is frustrating not to get an actual response or specific answer to any of the problems you may be having, never the less, Apple really does need to hear from its product users through as many channels as we can use. I am sure that any Apple Developers on the list are also doing all they can to correct problems as well. A new mac accessory
I have attached to my imac a dos computer. I use it to perform tasks in terminal and on the internet. Why you ask do that? It is my experience that not since the high level times of dos screen access have blind people had as much fine grained control and power to read screens in the way they perfer. This is just impossible in a gui. Just one small measure, what in dos takes one keystroke in the mac gui might take 3 or more keystrokes. Mac applications and vo are very finger fussy that way. Also if I want to read a specific area with the touch of a key and only that area one must do a crude imitation on the mac. Those who had dos experience can think of many more. It is now the reality that many blind folk today have always only known a gui and don't reailize what we old dos users miss. In part I got the imac hoping screen access had improved over those in windows I had experienced breifly some years ago. It has not improved to anything like dos access. I had particular interest to use speech in the mac terminal but while it is workable it again can not approach dos access. The terminal is the closest one gets to dos in a mac. So I concieved the idea of hooking a dos machine to the mac to use it in terminal with all the power that dos access provides. The dos machine is on a 4 inch square mother board and is a complete computer with multiple ports and connectivity. This includes network and usb ports. It makes no sound at all as it has no fans nor moving parts because it uses a flash chip as a hard drive and a wall wart for a power source. While I run dos, it can run any os that also uses 8086 chips. I use a memory stick as one would a floppy disk such as when having to boot outside the hard drive during trouble shooting. I use a serial port to connect to a mac usb port with an adaptor. This allows me to use dos screen reading and communications software. The latter has a powerful macro language and engine so while I'm on the mac or internet I can do very complex things with a keystroke, or because it can use text as a trigger it can do things automatically. Logins for example are done automattically with no input from me. Best of all all the power of a dos screen access program is there for use in the mac terminal that vo just does not have at this point. I'm as happy as a pig in mud, I have the power of dos in terminal and on the internet and the mac gui for anything I might find it might do better. A new mac accessory
"This all sounds good. If you learn apple script you can get the same thing with out putting out any bucks." How so? How can script duplicate universal fine grained control and power of dos screen access? Even when directly controled by keystrokes vo can not do this so how does having a script improve upon it? In performing some tasks that a macro script can do with a keystroke perhaps. In having that same script triggered by text appearing at a particular place on the screen, how? Byetta, Metformin & Kidneys
The only relationship of metformin to kidneys I have seen was not that it causes kidney problems. It is that if there are kidney problems one should not use metformin. Metformin is removed from the body via the kidneys. If they are not working in the normal range metformin is not removed as quickly and can build up. It is the high level of metformin that should be avoided. Metformin has now more then a 20 year track record and is perhaps one of the most safe drugs to use based on that history. Tips for using terminal with VO?
One thing when using the terminal and if connecting to other shells on other machines is to make sure the vt 100 imulation is chosen in a set statement. This translates keyboard input correctly to other machines. This has to be done in the mac terminal and on each of any other shells. Many strange things that appear related to character input and translation are solved by this method. One handy place to do it is in each shells login or profile or bash_profile etc. scripts which run each time a shell is started. These are proceeded by a period so they do not appear as a file whin in fact they are in the home directory. The limitation of vo in terminal is one reason I got a dos box connected to my mac to act as a speaking terminal. This uses dos screen reading capacity which is unexcelled by any other speech for control and power to access text based shellsand the respective software such as in unix and linux.. I use it also to connect to the internetvia the mac using lynx as the browser and other unix and linux type apps and utilities. commandline applications
I'm very interested to do many things from the commandline in terminal. >From time to time we hear of some application that comes with a commandline interface along with the gui. Vlc is a current example. At the commandline one would type: vlc filename to play the named file. Are there others known to users? I know regular mac applications can be started from the command line, or a second example if one is already active. Does anyone know how one might point to a file to act upon at startup like in the vlc example? For example: safari urlname Would start safari and go to the named url. A question about speech recognition in system preferences
Someone asked: "I've looked with some curiosity at the speech recognition capabilities of the Mac. I wonder if I can create my own custom phrases that the mac will obey. For instance, if I'm in the finder and I want to move something to the trash, can I create a rule to say "trash this" or "kill this" instead of "move this to the trash"? If so, how?" When I looked at this question using a google I found that an applescript can be attached to a voice command of one's choice. Sorry, don't recall the source. I did post about it here so it should be in the archives. XB IC|XC -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "MacVisionaries" group. System access to go on a mac
There was a thread about this alternative web based screen reader. It is intended for use on a windows machine. Has anyone ever tried it using a mac with vo? I ask because I have access to a private network and part of it is reached by starting an internet explorer session on the network to go to someother parts of the network. Of course vo stops speaking when ie is running. A sighted friend says the screen looks exactly like the mac is running windows with its menu items etc. and functions with the mouse just like it is windows running ie. . If I could use sa to go I could in principle access that part of the network also using a mac.. I assume one would have to toggle off vo while using it, if it works in fact? Re: IWork and ILife
Hello, Actually, the more that report to Apple and the different ways we all have of expressing ourselves will go much further toward helping Apple produce a much better product. If only one person does it, then it will be from his or her prospective and may not reflect the whole need. A Time Machine Restore Question
Hello everyone, I am wanting to know how to use the Time Machine's Restore feature. I know I can restore the whole system by picking a backup date and time from the Install DVD. I also know that I can go to my Time Machine files and locate the file I want to restore manually by Copying and Pasting it where it goes. What I don't remember is how to Go to the Time Machine Window and pick a file and use the Restore button. I can open Time Machine by doing the following. 1. Go to my documents folder, for example. 2. Open time Machine from the Doc and see a listing of files. 3. With VO F2 twice, I can find the different windows and I can even find the file I want to restore. However, I cannot find the Restore button. Anybody have any suggestions? Re: currency converter?
Hello, It does it on line. I have never had a problem with the conversions. In fact, you can even see when it was last updated. When After you plug in the first value and go to the conversion menu and pick currency, you will see the update as well as changing the to and from options and the okay button. It works every time. In fact, it even tells you where the updates were from. Re: The spell checker?
Hello, You need to use VO F2 twice then select the spelling and grammar window. Re: The spell checker?
Hello, I agree with you, however, consider this. That works fine in TextEdit or Pages 9, but it doesn't work in Mail. That's why I mentioned that way of doing it, because it works across most applications. And the real nice thing is that there are always different ways to do things and that makes it more exciting to figure out. Re: The spell checker?
Hello, In textedit, you only need press Command Semicolon then VO M to get to the menu. The way I mentioned is this. 1. Press Command Shift Colon. You will hear either Spelling and Grammar or Hide Spelling and Grammar. 2. Now press VO F2 twice. 3. Now use the down arrow to select the spelling window and press enter. 4. Now you will use tab to move around the window and the up and down arrows to select the correct word and press enter. 5. While on a word, before you accept the spelling, you can use VO w twice to hear the spelling of the word you are going to choose. 6. When you are done, press the escape key to get back into your document. This method also works in mail. Re: The new iTunes, accessibility issues?
Hello all, Just my thoughts regarding the new iTunes. At first, I was really frustrated about the tab key. However, I like relying on the VO navigation. It sure works smoothly. I also like the LCD scroll area. You can see how much time has elapsed and how much time is left on the current song. I don't know if the tab thing was done on purpose or not, but using the VO keys and navigating this way really works.
