drop tomorrow, maybe they won’t. Twiter did let me authorize an account
the other day on Tweesecake which surprised me. I’m wondering if there
is a difference between apps who have paid for access to Twitters API.
All you can do is enjoy your third-party ap while it works.

Display for Mac Mini

2023-01-29 Thread 'Adrienne Chalmers' via MacVisionaries
Guys,

Considering ditching the iMac and getting a Mac Mini. I know you can use them
without a display, but it’s useful to have one in case of the need of being
rescued by a sighted person etc.

As I am totally blind, I know nothing about displays. Can anyone advise the
least specs I can get away with please? All the recommendations I see are for
4k 28 inch monsters and I think that’s a bit over the top. Or do I mean I’m too
mean to shell out for one if I don’t have to?

Thanks in advance

Adrienne

Re: Display for Mac Mini

2023-01-29 Thread Rollin Hippler

Hello Adrienne,

When I got my Mac Mini, I wondered about the same issue.  I decided that
because a display wasn't going to get a lot of focus on it, I went with
the lease expensive model I could find that had an HDMI connection.  I
ended up spending about $100.00 for an LG model.

In those rare occasions when I do need sighted assistance, it works great.

All the best,

Rollin

Re: Smart light bulbs?

2023-01-29 Thread 'Janina Sajka' via MacVisionaries
Dear Donna, Jeff, All:

I have been intentionally buying from several different vendors for
reasons of research relating to developing guidance to the wider
industry through World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) publications where I'm
involved on behalf of accessibility concerns. While it's been a often
frustrating process for me, this has yielded some useful
conclusions--but that's all I think I need to say on that aspect of your
question.

Here's the important point ...

Once whatever devices you install are installed and configured via your
smart device, (phone, Ipad, etc), your accessibility is going to work.
Getting to that point can be a significant challenge.

Whether it's the Apple Home interface, or even Google Home running on
your IOS device, you'll know whether the light is on, and you'll be
easily able to toggle them on and off. The phone endpoint of this
technology works well. Siri, Google Assistant, Alexa, Curtana, any one
of these can also be your friend if you prefer to speak.

The trick is getting things to that point, and that's where the problems
live. You mention the challenge of wiring installations as a concern
over Jeff's strategy. Well the software from the various manufacturers
that you need to use to configure lightbulbs, switches, thermostats,
etc., etc., is all over the map from an accessibility point of view.

Phillips is a good choice for this reason. But you need to plan for yet
another small device sitting on a shelf somewhere, because your phone
needs to talk to it, and then it talks to Phillips Hue bulbs.
Fortunately this is a pretty accessible path by all reports. I didn't go
there personally.

There are lightbulbs that will undoubtedly meet your needs, and there
are dizzying combinations and versions each of which seemingly uses a
different app for initial configuration before you get to the point of
handing off control to the home app. If you experience a longish power
option, you may need to use that app again to restore the configuration.
This happened to me a couple months ago when our power was out for
around 7-8 hours.

There is good news on the horizon summarized nicely in this article:

https://www.forbes.com/sites/moorinsights/2022/01/11/ces-2022-matter-and-thread-win-the-iot-connectivity-wars/

My conclusion, wait and look for devices that say they support Thread
and Matter. That's hardly anything on the shelf today, but this should
change pretty soon. Meanwhile, all the old, not at all accessible app
based direct wifi devices will stay on the shelves until someone buys
them, even if they're a decade olde. You really don't want to go there,
unless you have enough vision left to deal with not very accessible
middleware apps.

You need to identify your needs. You need a certain amount of light? Buy
a bulb and put it in a lamp. This is a small investment to test whether
the 60 watt LED really is less light than the old fashioned 100 watt
incadescent. My guess is that it will work fine--but you need to judge.

Beyond that, I suspect your goal is to be able to control them. For me,
with no usable vision over such things, it has to do with control in my
entryway for delivery people, and with another lamp for lighting Zoom
calls in the evening.

Whatever your scenario, you also need to plan for how you manage
reconfiguration in software because sooner or later you'll need to deal
with that. You may not need to physically screw in the bulb all over
again, but you will sooner or later need to reconfigure the connection
to your very accessible Apple (Google or Microsoft) aggregating app,.

I hope this makes sense! Feel free to write any questions.

PS: My education started with a thermostat. I had a Nest 2 installed.
Last winter, when it lost network connectivity because of a slightly
longish Internet outage in my building, I was very cold. Rebooting the
thermostat required managing an inaccessible touch screen on the device.
Recharging its battery meant taking it off the wall and finding the
USB-A port inside. Not very blind friendly.

Long story short, I chucked the Nest 2 and went to a Nest 3. Now, when I
go down, and that happens a couple times a year though not often, I
simply pull it off the wall, test the pair of AAA batteries that power
it, and replace it onto the wall where it's connected to my HVAC system.
Takes maybe a minute or two and the heat is back on.

Best,

Janina

Re: Smart light bulbs?

2023-01-29 Thread 'Donna Goodin' via MacVisionaries
Hi Janina,

All I can say is wow, and thank you! Thank you for putting yourself through
all that frustration so that the rest of us can benefit from your knowledge.
We had a couple of LifeX bulbs in our last house, so I know a bit about those
inaccessible apps that you have to configure, and have no interest in
revisiting that experience.

Your advice makes a ton of sense. We’re actually replacing some of our Wemo
smart plugs with the newer version that supports thread, so waiting and getting
lightbulbs that do the same makes sense. Smart lightbulbs are expensive enough
that I don’t want to buy anything that I’m just going to want to replace a year
or two from now.

Thanks also for sharing your experience with the Nest 3. We had the Nest 2 in
our last house, and I had experiences similar to yours when for whatever reason
it lost power or went offline. When we moved into this house a couple of years
ago, we installed two Ecobee thermostats. I’m not in love with them. I think
the app is clunky to use, and the unit itself is a touch surface, so is
completely inaccessible. So I’m glad to hear that you are happier with the
Nest 3. I’ll keep that in mind if I ever get irritated enough to kick the
Ecobees to the curb.
Cheers,
Donna

Help using Time Machine

2023-01-29 Thread mr.robertcole via MacVisionaries
Dear Group,
I am using Mac OS Monterey.
Today I opened my CheckBook Pro app and to my surprise, It was showing my last
transactions was December 29th 2022.
I guess there was a iCloud sync problem between my Big Sur & my Monterey.
So I have a Time Machine backup from January 22, 2023.
When I enter Time Machine, it places me on the Desktop. I cant figure out how
to navigate to iCloud to find and restore my file.
Can someone point me in the right direction?
Thanks,
Rob

It seems for me that it sometimes work and sometimes not.
I’ve given it up for a while now but maybe I should do feedback report since I

Re: Has anyone else noticed that dictation in Messages is broken?

2023-01-29 Thread 'Donna Goodin' via MacVisionaries
I tried Dave’s suggestion of using the two-finger double tap, and that didn’t
work either. I’d send a feedback report, but I’m not sure whether it’s a bug,
or a result of the fact that I’m still using a series 6.
Cheers,
Donna

Re: Has anyone else noticed that dictation in Messages is broken?

2023-01-29 Thread Dave Carlson
Donna, Perhaps you first need to engage the edit field with a single finger
double tap. Then when it says “edit” or indices the beginning or end of the
edit field, then the to-finger double tap will allow dictation. Second
to-finger double tap will halt dictation and enter text into that edit field.

Dear Group,
I am using Mac OS Monterey.
Thanks,
Rob

Hi Dave,

I did do that, and dictation did activate. But it only captured two of the

Simple Text Editors

Currently I have the Drafts app for iOS and iPadOS. The main feature
I like about this app is it opens directly to the text area. But right
now it opens to a prompt to go premium.

So am curious to know if there is another app like that that is free
and does not have prompts to go premium. Thanks.

2023-01-29 Thread Brandon Olivares
For the Mac, I generally just use TextEdit and it works fine for me. I also
like to use the Notes app for keeping quick notes I want to refer back to later.

For programming I use PHPStorm. But not sure the type of editor you’re looking
for.

Family sharing question.

2023-01-29 Thread Jessica Moss
Ok, this probably is/isn’t exactly Voiceover related, but figured I’d post it
here anyway. Is there a way in family sharing, especially if you have a child
under the age of 18, who has apparently become savvy enough to disable the
default settings that sent notifications to me to allow/deny applications they
want on their phone, so I can see on my end exactly what’s going on? I got
this notification via my Apple Wallet yesterday for an $83.99 purchase
yesterday, that I knew I didn’t make, and it wasn’t showing up anywhere in my
own account, but was showing up in my bank statement, and it took me talking to
someone at Apple for about 20 or 30 minutes trying to tell him over and over
that I didn’t make this purchase, and I just wanted to know what it was for,
before he would finally stop dancing around the situation, stop acting like he
was going to lose his job, and told me it was for an app called “Duel Lingo”
that I realized right away that Hannah put on her phone a couple months ago,
but know nothing about the app itself, so had no idea its was
subscription-based, and not only did she not tell me, but forgot to cancel it
and overdrew me. So for future reference, is there a way I can set things up
in family sharing where I can see what’s going on with Hannah’s phone, and if
not, can someone please send me step-by-step instructions on how to reenable
the setting where I’m notified before anything gets installed on her phone?

Re: Simple Text Editors

2023-01-29 Thread 'E.T.' via MacVisionaries
I guess I need to explain. If something happens to my hearing
devices, I want to quickly connect my braille display to either iPhone
or iPad, preferably the iPad, which is in a folio and has a Bluetooth
keyboard, open a plain text editor directly into the text area. Thus
someone can type to me and I can read the text. In this scenario, the
Mac will not do.

Drafts is such an app but I believe its subscription.

Re: Help using Time Machine

2023-01-29 Thread Jonathan C. Cohn
OK, two completely different questions about Time Machine.
1. I believe in some cases, you can pick an APP or finder window before you
start the time Machine process. You will need to experiment a little as I have
only recovered one or two items with time machine.
2. You can certainly leave your time machine disk plugged in all the time, the
only disadvantage of this is that if a ransom ware attack gets to your
computer, there is a good chance they will encrypt all the data on the time
machine disk too. Some people keep two time machine disks and swap them weekly.
Or you can use another backup strategy in addition to Time Machine. Also, if
you have automatic time machine backups turned on, and the time machine disk is
not available, time machine will still create APFS snapshots that can be used
to save changes once the disk is available again. Yet another reason to make
sure you have more free disk space than you really need.

Best Wishes,
Jonathan

THe translation app could be used in a pinch. Just set both languages to
English-US . Or even the mail app just keep a draft at the bottom and don’t put
any recipients in the to or cc fields.
That being said, I am sure there are some simple text editing applications for

2023-01-29 Thread 'Donna Goodin' via MacVisionaries
Alternatively, I have a keyboard shortcut set up to open text edit on the Mac. For me, that shortcut is right option D. You could do something similar. Have a Shortcuts set up to open TextEdit and then hit command end to open a new document. I realize it isn’t quite as seamless as what you are looking for, but it seems like you could get it up and running fairly quickly.CheersDonnaSent from my iPhoneOn Jan 29, 2023, at 6:39 PM, Jonathan C. blank document up, so you could quickly get into it and have people type to you.

connecting my braille display to the iPad, opened the app and was in

What app do you use for the terminal? I tried ISH and VoiceOver seems
sluggish. Also, I remember trying Nano with it and had trouble figuring out
where my cursor was using VoiceOver.
