Re: Voice Dream Reader for mac and Braille display

2022-06-21 Thread 'Andrew Lamanche' via MacVisionaries
Yes, when I hit the spacebar, Voice Dream Reader for Desktop begins to read the
book but I can’t locate the text which it is reading and thus I can’t mute
voiceover and read by using my refreshable Braille display. I have asked the
developer but he doesn’t seem to know as he says he doesn’t have a Braille
display. This is a bit of a drawback for me as I like on occasion to read
quietly; reading using Braille is a completely different experience for me. I
think on an IPhone one can use a Braille display and you can actually touch the
text with your finger. On the mac, I can’t find the text being read anywhere.

Re: Voice Dream Reader for mac and Braille display

2022-06-21 Thread Julie Rattray
Hi,

Haven’t tried it on the Mac with dreamreader but would the books app not work
for what you want or even reading the document in something like preview or
even pages/word - I guess it depends on the format of the book you are reading

Re: Voice Dream Reader for mac and Braille display

2022-06-21 Thread 'Andrew Lamanche' via MacVisionaries
I thought so as well when I installed voice dream reader on my mac and took out
the subscription but alas I don’t seem to be able to use my Braille display. I
open a book, I hit the spacebar for voiceover to start reading thee text but I
can’t find the text being read anywhere on the screen. When using the same
application on IPhone, I can touch the text being read, and I can use my
Braille display. Am I missing something?

Re: Voice Dream Reader for mac and Braille display

2022-06-21 Thread 'Andrew Lamanche' via MacVisionaries
I’ve played with the application some more and I have finally managed to find
the actual text in the area voiceover reads as “web area” and then having
interacted with it I found voiceover said “frame” and having interacted with it
again, I found the text. I was able to read a few pages using just my Braille
display. However, as soon as I left the area and looked elsewhere on my
computer, I lost the place I finished reading, which meant I had to spend a a
long time scrolling down to find my place again. I noticed the meter that
shows how much of the book has already been read and how much is left showed
zero, which makes me think reading using braille display doesn’t actually
register on the meter hence I lost my place in the book. I shall have to play
with it some more.

have asked the developer but he doesn’t seem to know as he says he doesn’t
have a Braille display. This is a bit of a drawback for me as I like on
occasion to read quietly; reading using Braille is a completely different
experience for me. I think on an IPhone one can use a Braille display and
you can actually touch the text with your finger. On the mac, I can’t
find the text being read anywhere.

Re: Voice Dream Reader for mac and Braille display

2022-06-21 Thread 'Andrew Lamanche' via MacVisionaries
Further to my Voice Dream Reader for Desktop woes, I’ve played with the
application some more and I have finally managed to find the actual text in the
area voiceover reads as “web area” and then having interacted with it I found
voiceover said “frame” and having interacted with it again, I found the text.
I can’t quite determine how I found the text other than trying to activate
‘full screen” by pressing letter F - something I found in the menus. I was
able to read a few pages using just my Braille display. However, as soon as I
left the area and looked elsewhere on my computer, I lost the place where I
finished reading, which meant I had to spend a long time scrolling down to find
my place again. I noticed the meter that shows how much of the book has
already been read and how much is left showed zero, which makes me think
reading using braille display doesn’t actually register on the meter hence I
lost my place in the book. I shall have to play with it some more. It would
appear the Braille display focus doesn’t move the Voiceover focus with it.

Converting kindle books on the Mac?

2022-06-21 Thread 'Mervin Keck III' via MacVisionaries
Someone asked me if it was possible to convert Kindle books on the Mac in a
similar fashion as they do with Codex on Windows. So they can archive their
books. Is there such an app out there for converting Kindle books on the Mac?

2022-06-21 Thread alia robinson
yep,

calibre works, but you really need the serial number of a kindle device, and
sighted help to set it up, but once it is it works great.

As I recall you have used the double/triple synth voices, as did I for many
years. I hate the default alex foice on the mac. The tom voice
comes closest to the double/triple voices.

Re: Voices in new OS.

2022-06-21 Thread Jessica Moss
Honestly, Alex has always been the one I’ve been partial to sense leaving
eloquence behind. I’ve tried every other voice that came out for Mac/IOS that
was supposed to sound better, and for me, they just didn’t have the same flow
that he has.
They either were too skippy, laggy, or in some way shape or form, didn’t
sound right when reading for long periods of time.

It is one reason why I wanted an older mac, and why I am, after years of
being on this list, only now in a position to really use apple products
 at all.
My point is that inclusion also means choices, and limiting choices
because of how a person's body works, is not inclusion..at all.

Bookshare provides a format called Daisy text. In the zip archive is a
.XML file which is the actual text itself.
i am not a braille user, but do wonder if you loaded the XML file into
something like tables if it could be read that way?
Personally I take mine, load them into a browser, save them as text and
read them in my word processor.

Re: Voices in new OS.

2022-06-21 Thread Karen Lewellen

Not sure why you would think this, have never used such voices.
Although Jessica's comment is an interesting one regardless.
for many people depending on when they came to computers the voice
representing that access is more than a novelty.
further, speaking personally, adaptive technology serves as a substitution
for, even an extension of basic human functions..these are not toys. Nor
more than eyes hands or ears are toys.
If apple is treating these voices elegance or whatever like novelty
voices, they are doing users who rely on them, each with different
interests needs and preferences a disservice.
the dectalk voices I use in hardware from have been, I am told, quite
destroyed in their later digital form as an example.

Each individual brings a preference to the tool they use, some rooted in

I have no idea what voice I am using on my Mac yet, too busy managing

The problem might be with the hardware you’re using. I have a Mac mini from
2014, and I can’t get Handoff to work either on it. I have an SE 2022 iPhone,

Continuity System requirements, and supposedly my Mac mini should work, but it

RE: hand-off

2022-06-21 Thread pdevasto0219
After thinking about this topic a bit more after sending the last message, I
seem to remember that these older Mac Mini's don't have something called an
Airplay receiver or something. I'd have to go back and look it up, but maybe
someone else in the group knows about that part. One thing I discovered I could
do, though, if I wanted to take something I was listening to on my iPhone and
bring it up on my Mac, was to tap Share on my iPhone, and airdrop the link to
my Mac. When I do that, the Mac either opens the link in Safari automatically
or I simply accept the request.
Hope that helps,
Pete De Vasto

Could you describe the steps you take loading such files into your browser? do

Re: Voice Dream Reader for mac and Braille display

2022-06-21 Thread Karen Lewellen

Hi Andrew,
Certainly.
Let me preface that I am *not* using the mac to accomplish this task, but
cannot imagine why the process would not be comparative, its just a file.
Also, for my own record keeping I tend to change the name when I save
the file to a .txt from the .XML source.

For my explanation lets pretend you have a copy of say John Steinbeck's
east of Eden.
when the zip archive is unpacked then you will have several files that
contain the title, with proper capitalization, including one that says

East_of_Eden.XML
Again I unpack the zip file in its own directory or folder, so to avoid
confusion with other common files bookshare sends every time.

once unpacked I simply type the file name into my browser.
As I use a shell service based on Ubuntu Linux I have several lower
graphics options. To keep the explanation simple, I might type

lynx east_of_Eden.XML
I could even use a wildcard if the title is especially long, something
like

lynx East_*.XML
the result is for me the same.
my browser presents what is actually already a text edition of the file,
displaying XML, much as it displays .html files.
because the browser also, when properly compiled even for the Mac, has
the option to save to a local file, or email the file, I can, after
choosing this command and saving the file to what I wish, say eastofe.txt
You can choose whatever file name works for you, using .txt as the
extension.
What happens next though depends on how you read regular text files with
your braille display.

I suppose? in theory you could even read in your browser if desired.
For the record, as shared, there is a mac edition of lynx, if actually
using the tool resonates.

Sing out if you have more questions.
Kare

>> The following in

a question about compact voices.

2022-06-21 Thread Karen Lewellen
Going to start a different thread about applications, but one goal at a
time.
While taking the tutorial I reached the place where voices, pitch rate and
inflection can be adjusted.
I recall that one can get an alternative to compact voices, enhanced
perhaps?
Do not recall the process however, do I need my apple id for this, or is
there another path?

Thanks,
Karen

Make sure both devices divices are logged into the same iCloud
account. Then go to system preferences, and General. At the bottom you
will see the option for handoff. Check the box. Then on your iPhone,
go to Settings, General, AirPlay, and Handoff. You should be good to
go from there after you enable it, though sometimes I have to restart
the phone to get it to cooperate.

Re: Voice Dream Reader for mac and Braille display

2022-06-21 Thread 'Andrew Lamanche' via MacVisionaries
Yes, I have finally found the area and i was able to read the text with the
Braille display but as soon as I move away from that area, and then return to
the text, I find myself at the beginning of the book again. Voice Dream Reader
forr Mac doesn’t remember where you left off with the Braille display. I have
been wondering whether there’s a way Voiceover/keyboard focus could track
Braille cursor if there is such a thing. :)

I’ve been trying to find a way to do this but have thus far failed.
