FW: [tech-vi Announce List] Microsoft announces Windows 365, a cloud OS you can stream

2021-07-20 Thread skipper8218
I understand that this is not a Windows group, but I wonder if Microsoft’s
Windows in the Cloud Service could be a solution for those wanting to run
Windows on the Mac.

I wonder how accessible this service would be using VoiceOver and Windows
screen readers.

Is this something Mac users who are visually impaired would welcome?

I always prefer to keep the two operating systems separate.

Microsoft announces Windows 365, a cloud OS you can stream

 Source: Microsoft

What you need to know

* Microsoft has announced a new, cloud version of Windows 10 and Windows
11.
* It's called Windows 365 and is launching August 2nd.
* It's like XCloud, but for Windows.
* For now, it is only for enterprise and EDU.

Update July 15, 2021, at 1:00 pm ET: The service's pricing model has been
partially revealed

 .

Microsoft has today announced its new Cloud PC service, officially called
Windows 365, that allowing customers to create installs of Windows 10 or
Windows 11 in the cloud and stream
the OS to any device. The service will go live August 2nd

, and is designed to bring the best of Windows to any device, including Mac,
iPad, or Android devices.

Windows 365 will allow users to install their favorite Windows apps and
experiences in the cloud, and access them from any device they choose. Cloud
PCs will support "instant-on" start up, and will be available via subscription
at a flat rate.

Of course, Windows 365 is not replacing Windows 11 or Windows 10. The local
version of Windows is still considered the latest, and will always be available
to install locally without a subscription. Windows 365 is merely a service that
allows users to stream instances of Windows 10 or Windows 11 via the cloud as
if it were your own PC.

VPN Deals: Lifetime license for $16, monthly plans at $1
 & more

Windows 365 is built on Azure Virtual Desktops, and works in a similar fashion
to Microsoft's XCloud
service, which allows you to stream games from the cloud. Users will be able to
choose the size of their Windows 365 install. Microsoft hasn't yet announced
plans or pricing for Windows 365, but the company is expected to do so on
August 2nd when the service goes live. Microsoft unveiled Windows 365 during
its Inspire 2021 keynote.

The service will launch first for enterprises, with no word on when or if
Windows 365 will be available for non-enterprise customers. What are your
thoughts on Windows 365? Let us know in the comments.

You can go into settings, your appleID, iCloud, then to mail. Uncheck the

Re: getting new mac, best way to migrate data apps etc

2021-07-20 Thread 'Donna Goodin' via MacVisionaries
Alia,

I know that using Migration assistant has worked for some people, but at least
a couple of us have ended up having to get replacement Macs because of this
issue. In addition to the migration breaking Voiceover, when I went to erase
everything and reinstall the OS, I was unable to do so. I could erase the
disk, but was not allowed to reinstall the OS, which pretty much left me dead
in the water. When I googled it, I read that this is a known issue with the M1
Macs. So, even though not using Migration Assistant is a royal pain, were I
you, I wouldn’t chance it.
Just my $.02,
Donna

Re: getting new mac, best way to migrate data apps etc

2021-07-20 Thread Brad Snyder
Since you are most likely migrating from an older Intel-based Mac, to a new M1
Mac, you should be aware that the 2 systems are very different and not
compatible.
A couple of users on this list have tried using a Time Machine backup from
their older Intel-based Mac, to setup their new M1 Mac, and the results were
devastating. In both of these cases, the new M1 Mac was rendered unusable,,
and had to be returned to Apple.

Transferring your data and applications using the Migration assistant may be a
safer option to consider.

HTH.

2021-07-20 Thread Brad Snyder
Alternatively, after selecting the sent message, and invoking the resend option
using CMD + Shift + D, navigate to the “To” field,, and interact twice, using
VO + Shift + Down Arrow, and open the Shortcut menu, using VO + Shift M, where
you can view the recipient’s address.

I used migration assistant moving from an Intel MacBook Pro to an M1 MacBook

I agree with Brad. I wish that Apple had somehow let us know that migration
from Time Machine could be problematic, but even after everything, The M1 is
the future. To eschew it just because you can’t migrate from Time Machine
would be misguided.

RE: getting new mac, best way to migrate data apps etc

2021-07-20 Thread skipper8218
I think we should encourage the use of Apple's iCloud for backups and recovery.
Once I get the right adapters and become more comfortable with the Mac, I may
backup via time machine and just restore to that Mac only.

Re: getting new mac, best way to migrate data apps etc

2021-07-20 Thread 'Donna Goodin' via MacVisionaries
You make a good point. What I ended up doing, once I got the replacement Mac,
was just copying my documents folder to iCloud, and then copying the whole
folder to my Mac. It was actually super easy, and now the Mac and iCloud
folders are connected, so when I make a change on my Mac, it’s reflected in the
cloud. In the end, I was really happy with this solution.
Cheers,
Donna

Re: getting new mac, best way to migrate data apps etc

2021-07-20 Thread Brad Snyder
Using the Migration Assistant to migrate data and applications is different
than restoring from a Time Machine backup.
When restoring from a Time Machine backup, the destination machine’s hard drive
is wiped, and the contents of the backup are written to the drive.
Since a backup from an Intel-based Mac is incompatible with an M1 Mac, the M1
Mac is rendered unusable when restoring a backup from an Intel-based Mac.
I believe this is what happened to Donna’s M1 Mac, and at least one other on
this list.

RE: getting new mac, best way to migrate data apps etc

2021-07-20 Thread skipper8218
I'm glad.
I found it much easier to create an account on the Mac because my iPhone was
already in the cloud.
Setting up the Mac this way was easier than Windows.

Cheers,
Donna

Does the Mac allow you to clean install the OS just like Windows does maybe
through a recovery partition?

Then, you could just sign in again and restore through iCloud.

2021-07-20 Thread Brad Snyder
In my opinion, the proper use of a Time Machine backup, is to restore a backup
made on an individual machine, to the machine that created the backup, in the
event that the machine that created the backup, suffers a hard drive failure.
Restoring a Time Machine backup to a different machine than the machine that
created the backup, may have unintended and devastating consequences, and
should not be done as a matter of practice.

It is also my opinion that a new Mac should be setup as a new Mac from scratch,
and data and application should be moved to the new Mac, after the new Mac has
been setup as a new machine. This may seem to be more time consuming and less
convenient, but it is a much more prudent and safer way to proceed, as I am
sure Donna will agree.

I store my data in Dropbox, iCloud, and Microsoft OneDrive, but I also backup
data to an external hard drive.

Can I use the same hardrive for media and document backups for Mac and Windows?

Please note that I am just talking about documents, music, and MP4 video files

Thanks.

Yes it does, but when Donna used a Time Machine backup to setup her new M1 Mac,
everything on her new Mac’s HD was wiped, and replaced with the backup from the
older Mac, and this is what I believe rendered her new M1 Mac unusable.

I believe this is what happened to Donna’s M1 Mac, and at least one other on
this list.

my wife & I use the one iCloud account. If I uncheck those addresses wouldn’t

Re: getting new mac, best way to migrate data apps etc

2021-07-20 Thread Brad Snyder
Well, I store most of my data in iCloud and/or Dropbox. For data that is on my
Mac mini, such as my iTunes Music library, I copy my User/Home folder to an
external USB drive, then import it onto the new Mac.
My Mac mini is my primary Mac. I do not keep music or other archived data on
my MacBook Pro. When using the MacBook Pro, I rely on iCloud and music from
cloud sharing.
