Any Experiences with the MB Air m1?

2021-05-04 Thread Ibraheem Fakir
Hi List,

Considering trading my older machine in and picking up the m1 MacBook Air.
Anyone have one and if so, what are your impressions with day to day VO use,
running Windows with Jaws or NVDA, and video conferencing applications?

I’m also tired of the typing speed reduction on the butterfly keyboard and am
interested in what the magic keyboard may offer.

Thanks,
Ibraheem

Any reason not to migrate data to a new Mac using a Time-machine backup rather than having it migrate directly from the old Mac?

2021-05-04 Thread 'Donna Goodin' via MacVisionaries
Hi all,

I'm excited to say that I'm a proud owner of a new MBA.

In the past, I've migrated my data using a time-machine backup, and it seemed
to go faster and more smoothly. However, that was several OSes ago, so I
thought I'd see what the current thinking about that is. My old Mac is running
Big Sur. Thoughts?
Cheers,
Donna

Re: Any reason not to migrate data to a new Mac using a Time-machine backup rather than having it migrate directly from the old Mac?

2021-05-04 Thread Brad Snyder
I prefer to migrate my data manually rather than using either a Time Machine
backup, or the Migration Assistant. This way I know I have transferred only
the data and not any of the accumulated garbage from the old Mac.
Since I keep most of my files in iCloud drive, this is a very simple
undertaking.

2021-05-04 Thread 'Donna Goodin' via MacVisionaries
Interesting. I'd thought about doing that, but though my recent stuff is
stored in iCloud, I have a fair amount of stuff on my Mac from before, so that
could end up being sort of time-consuming.

VO on new Mac stops speaking after I migrate my data using Time Machine

2021-05-04 Thread 'Donna Goodin' via MacVisionaries
Hi all,

Subject says it all. I migrated my data, everything seemed to be going well. I
heard VO say only 7 minutes remaining. But when I came back in the room, my MBA
had gone completely silent. The screen is lit up, so I know the Mac is on.
It's been like that for about twenty minutes. Anyone know what might be going
on? Debating whether to restart, but don't want to risk bricking the mac.
TIA,
Donna

Re: VO on new Mac stops speaking after I migrate my data using Time Machine

2021-05-04 Thread Robert Hill
Hi Donna,

What you might want to try is to hold down CTRl and option keys, and hit the
power button 3 times.

This should get you into a window where accessibility settings are checked or
unchedcked.

Use VO and right arrow to move through the options. VoiceOver should be the
first option. It will probably be unchecked so check it, and exit out of the
settings, and you should be on your way.

Hope it works for you.

Hi Robert,

Nice guess. Tried it, but no dice. I've figured out the problem is that VO is
on, but nothing I do will activate speech. (sigh*(
Thanks,

2021-05-04 Thread Jenny Wood
I know you can use a three-finger double-tap on the trackpad when the trackpad
commander is turned on to mute voiceover, but I’m not aware of a keyboard
command that involves buttons. If there is such a thing, I would love to know
myself! LOL

Anyone know anything about a green and yellow spinning thing that replaces the cursor?

2021-05-04 Thread 'Donna Goodin' via MacVisionaries
According to my sighted husband, that is what is on the screen of my Mac. He
cannot make it go away, and when it is there, we can't click on anything.
Anyone know what this thing is?
TIA,
Donna

Re: Anyone know anything about a green and yellow spinning thing that replaces the cursor?

2021-05-04 Thread 'Donna Goodin' via MacVisionaries
So my husband googled this, and apparently its called the spinning wait
cursor--also unofficially the Spinning Beach Ball of Death. And death seems to
be what it's brought to my Mac. It's completely locked up and neither of us
can get the Mac to do anything. Is this mac toast, or is there some way out of
this? Any help is greatly appreciated, at this point, I'm not even sure if
there's a way to erase my data from the hard disk.
TIA,
Donna

2021-05-04 Thread Brad Snyder
Donna,
This is also called a “spinning pizza”. It means the Mac is processing
something.
If it doesn’t go away on its own after a while, you can press and hold the
TouchID button until the computer shuts down.

2021-05-04 Thread 'Sabahattin Gucukoglu' via MacVisionaries
VMWare say they won't support ARM64 Windows for licencing reasons at the moment
(silly policy IMO, but there we are), but also I don't know what the screen
reader situation is on ARM64 Windows at the moment either. If you want to run
Windows and macOS on the same box, you continue to need an Intel Mac.

Then just let it sit. It should go away when it finishes whatever it is doing.
Perhaps it is still doing the restoration/migration from the TimeMachine backup.
