mac os big sur: voice over still bugging out on every second announcement

2021-04-06 Thread Yuma Decaux
Hi all,

I've gotten rid of all possible trackpad gestures that may interfere with any
of the voice over speech attributes (rate, pitch, etc) but I'm still having to
restart voice over after a little while on my system, at which point the local
language english voice announces randomly before it gives place to alex (the
default voice).

This behaviour is really starting to get on my nerves as I tend to do things
quickly and between different apps.

Just some background, i'm on a macbook 16 with 32 gb of ram and something like
8 cores, 2 tb of ssd disc space.

I should not be having this kind of behaviour.

Is this because my local language is australian and I'm using the alex compact
voice for all of my tasks?

What I don't get is that all of my voice over speech parameters are set to
alex, all at same pitch, rate, volume etc. But when i restart voice over, the
australian voice always turns up for a few announcements before disappearing.
This is very bugged out and I want to squash this ASAP as every time I have to
restart it interferes with my focus, and after 10-20 times of this happening in
a day of work, I start to think of different ways of destroying the laptop.

Anyone know if theres another property or setting somewhere which actually has
the local english voice conflicting with my voice over settings? For example,
if I press right option t, the time is announceed, but with the australian
voice. I want it to be alex, everywhere, no situation specific voice change, it
seems to cause those conflicting announcement issues.

Thanks for any suggestions

Re: A Question About a Possible Voiceover Utility Setting

2021-04-06 Thread Nebojsa Tasic

Oh, that's what I had had many problems with before I figured it out.

On 5.4.2021. 21:00, Brad Snyder wrote:

character that VoiceOver passes over.
I think this is a big advantage to using VoiceOver on a Mac, versus
it’s Windows counterparts.  I find this to be much less confusing than
the JAWS/NVDA standard of speaking the character to the right of the
cursor.

I really wish this option existed in JAWS/NVDA and even narrator.

Hi,
I think it is under verbosity/text.  You can change the announcement

Sadly I have found this to be unreliable. That is, it works some
times and other times it announces the wrong character.

I found it too flakey to use anything but the default.
YMMV.

Hi,

delete or add characters or words. I’ve listened to several tutorials
and can’t seem to get it right.

Over the weekend on his podcast, Jonathan Mohsen Mentioned that there
is a setting that allows Voiceover to mimic the way that windows
screen readers handle the placement of the cursor. I have looked
through the Voiceover utility and did not find a checkbox to make this
possible.

I did a search on Google and found this sentence in an old article by
the NFB. “If
you want a more Windows-like feel to Voiceover, you can now choose to
have it speak only what is to the right of the Voiceover cursor when
editing. This
is configurable within the VO control panel.” Is this still possible
and where would I find this setting? I’m running Catalina.

Thank you in advance for any help that anybody has to offer.

2021-04-06 Thread Jeff Berwick
Hi there,

I have recently had a similar issue—I have had to restart Voiceover every 5 -
10 minutes as it stops announcing whatever I navigate to.

I had a session with their accessibility team and have submitted data from my
computer which, as they tell me, has been very helpful in identifying the
issue. I am apparently not alone with this issue.

They are working on a fix to be released in an upcoming release—although they
couldn’t give me an estimation.

Perhaps your issue will be resolved by the same code.

You may wish to reach out to accessibility and have them view your issue. For
me, we did a screen recording and then sent log files so they knew exactly what
was going on.

Hth,
Jeff

Firefox and Chrome

2021-04-06 Thread 'Adrienne Chalmers' via MacVisionaries
Hello

I bought a season ticket to a series of on-line plays. Unfortunately, the
platform they chose to use is not compatible with Safari. I managed to access
the actual performance, but not the pre and post-show elements.

I was told I would need to use either Firefox or Chrome in order to participate
fully, so I am looking for advice on which is the least bother to use with
Voiceover and for any tips on working with either browser.

TIA

Adrienne

VoiceOver randomly reading items on the Doc

2021-04-06 Thread 'Robert Cole' via MacVisionaries
Dear List,
I am having a weird problem with VoiceOver on Big Sur.
While reading on web pages and in email, by pressing the down arrow to read
line by line, I will hear
"Notes, 12 of 20.”
Then as I continue to press the down arrow, it will read the email for a few
lines, then I may hear,
“Music, 14 of 20.”
Am I the only one with this problem?
I promise I’m not cracking up!
I hear it! Really I do!!
I do I do really hear it!
LOL 😎👨🏾‍🦯
Thanks,

Re: VoiceOver randomly reading items on the Doc

2021-04-06 Thread Brad Snyder
I’m thinking this could be due to one of 2 things.

1. Your dock is not set to auto-hide.
or,
2. Your dock may or may not be set to auto-hide, but your mouse arrow is
situated at the bottom of the screen, and is hovering over the dock area.

Many non-sighted VoiceOver users are not aware that even though they are using
VoiceOver, the mouse pointer is still active, and present somewhere on the
screen. Depending on the location of the mouse arrow, this can cause “hover”
related issues.
I suggest that when you hear this random speech, you try dragging your finger
on the trackpad, up and to the far left, in order to relocate the mouse pointer
to a less problematic location on the screen and see if that helps.

Go to your Bluetooth settings in system settings, make sure it is turned on,
then turn on the device you want pairing, I believe you then add the device,
after the Mac searches and finds it, select the device and OK it.

Hope this gets you started in the right direction.

Hi Lori, go to System Preferences, go to sound, interact with the table, and if
you have any Bluetooth devices nearby, you will interact with the device to
select the device. If it is one that you haven't cared before, go to System
Preferences go to Bluetooth, find the device in the table, and click pair from
within the table.

Audio Hijack for IOS?

2021-04-06 Thread Paul Hopewell
Hello,
Does anyone know of a VO friendly IOS App which will capture audio played by
Safari, somewhat like Audio Hijack on Mac/OS?
Many thanks for any tips … Paul Hopewell

Re: VoiceOver randomly reading items on the Doc

2021-04-06 Thread Brad Snyder
OK, hope that helps.
Keep in mind, that even with Auto-Hide enabled, if the mouse pointer is
hovering near the bottom of the screen, this will cause the dock to appear, and
VoiceOver may speak or highlight a dock item. Same can be true for the menu
bar, and/or any of the pull-down menus.

Thank you all for your replies and comments. It would have probably been better
if I learned the way Voiceover does it in the first place. It’s hard to undo
over 29 years of another behavior though. I’ll give this setting a try and see
if it is reliable.

RE: Bootable Bigsur Backup?

2021-04-06 Thread M. Taylor
Hello Paul,

I can assure you that Super Duper works just fine with Big Sur.

I use it every week and continue to make bootable backups from my internal
drive to my external USB drive; and on occasion from one external drive to a
second external drive.

Just be certain that you are using the latest version of Super Duper.

I suggest that you contact the developer of Super Duper as he responds rather
quickly to inquiries. I do not have his contact email, at hand, or I would
include it in this reply.

Mark

Subject: Bootable Bigsur Backup?

Hello,
Have any listers successfully created a Bigsure bootable backup on an external
disk for a 2018 iMac? I used SuperDuper for this for many years on prior Mac/OS
releases which have rescued my system on several occasions but this no longer
works on Bigsur. I have looked at the Carbon Copy Cloner web site but this also
does not seem to easily fix this problem. It seems that I have to first install
Bigsur on my backup disk so that I can boot from it, but I am then unclear on
whether I can then use SuperDuper or Carbon Copy Cloner to add my latest user
data to this external disk say every month or so. The problem seems to be that
Apple do not offer an interface for these products to copy the now protected
files to allow booting to an external disk.
Many thanks for any tips … Paul Hopewell

Re: bluetooth on a Mac

2021-04-06 Thread Brad Snyder
When you go to Bluetooth, in Menu Extras,, Bluetooth Preferences is at the
bottom of the list.
Whether you go through Menu Extras, or through System Preferences, gets you to
the same place.

Re: Reading By Words The Last Spoken Utterance By VoiceOver?

2021-04-06 Thread Brad Snyder
If you do the keyboard command VO + Shift + C, you can copy the last thing
spoken by VoiceOver to the clipboard. Then you could paste this into TextEdit,
a new Mail message, or any other text editor of your choice.
Once pasted into a text editor, you can read it word by word, or character by
character, if you wish.

it can be done if the last spoken utterance can be read by character/word.
Thanks!

Safari on a Mac

2021-04-06 Thread Lorie McCloud
I've been having this problem fairly often where I'll be on a website, I'll
have a button in focus, press vo-space on it and nothing happens. vo will say
"press" and whatever the name of the button is but it doesn't doing anything.
is there some setting I could change in Safari or anything else I could do
about this? I'm running Cataline.

thanks.

Yes, you can first try enter. If that does not work, then you can tray
something a little more involved. Do Command VO F5 followed by VO Shift space.

You can use VO + CMD + F5, which will route the mouse to the VO cursor, then do
VO + Shift + Spacebar, to simulate a mouse click.
