Hello,
I was doing this with command-F while in a finder window. Once you have a
selector picked, you should be able to find a radio button group to select
entire computer, home directory or current folder.

Re: Looking for VoiceOver accessible "budgeting" software?

2020-02-16 Thread Brandon Olivares
Hi,

You Need A Budget (YNAB) is the best app I’ve found out there. Some elements
could definitely be more accessible but they’ve made huge leaps in that area.

But more importantly their budgeting philosophy is the most useful I’ve found.

Reading by sentence in books app

2020-02-16 Thread Phil Halton
As we know, the voice over command to read by sentence is VO plus command plus
page up and page down. On the Apple Bluetooth keyboard, this means one must
hold down with the left-hand the function, control, option, and command keys
while pressing the up or down arrow keys with the right hand..
those are the four keys to the left of the spacebar and for those of us with
carpal tunnel, this can become a crippling position after some time. my
solution is to use a “chip clip“ to firmly hold these keys in place which
allows me to then operate the arrow keys with a single finger of either hand,
and this greatly relieves the stress I would otherwise experience in the left
hand nerves. I imagine that a clipboard would also work as long as the jaw of
the clip was at least as wide as those four keys, but I wonder if the intense
pressure of a metal clipboard might not damage the keyboard itself. As it is,
the plastic chip clip has enough force to hold the keys down but I don’t think
enough to damage the keyboard.
by the way, if anybody doesn’t know what I mean by a “chip clip“, it’s
basically a plastic wide clip used to reseal a bag of potato chips after it’s
been opened. And they can be found at any grocery store. Anyway, that’s my
solution for a problem that was threatening to keep me from being able to read
in the Books app or on any app that requires use of a keyboard. I know there’s
another fellow on this list with carpal tunnel and maybe he can get some ideas
from this. Sent from my IPhone

Re: Controlling books on OS X with voice commands

2020-02-16 Thread Jonathan Cohn
OK, It appears all quicknav alphanumeric functions do not work in Books.trying
with Stops app, I get exactly the same behavior so for both of the Applications
using the new interface allowing simultaneous development of IOS and MacOS app,
QuickNav is completely useless on MacOS. Lets all report this to Apple! I was
able to assign next/previous sentence to control-left and control-right track
pad swipes and have them work quite well. That is except on page turns where
the entire page was read. One can fairly easily read by line with quick nav
rotor set to navigation.

Best wishes,

Jonathan Cohn

I changed my vo key to caps lock and I'm so happy I did, just pressing the one

Re: Reading by sentence in books app

2020-02-16 Thread 'Tim Kilburn' via MacVisionaries
Hi,

Have you considered the Keyboard commander in the VO Utility. For example, you
could do the following:

1. Open the Vo Utility with VO-f8
2. Press cmd-8 to bring focus to the Commanders category
3. VO-right to the Keyboard tab and VO-space on it.
4. VO-right to the table and interact with it.

Navigate through the list to get and idea of the currently used letters. Also
note that, by default, the Keyboard Commander uses the right option key. So,
by holding down the right option key and any of those letter listed, you'll get
the corresponding command. We can also add our own here. So, just for fun, I
tried it and it worked great. Some books may have issues, but most should be
fine. Thus, let's create a few.

5. Stop interacting with the table and VO-right to the Add button then
VO-space to press it.

VO will automatically jump back inside the table ready for you to enter a
letter and associated command.

6. Type the letter "j", then VO-right to the menu, down to Text, then right
and down to Previous Sentence.

YOu've now set it so that you can press the right option key and the letter j
to read the previous sentence. I'd follow the same steps in #5 and #6 to set
"k" for current sentence, and "l" for next sentence. Similarly, you can set a
group of letters, such as "u, i and o" for previous, current and next
paragraph. The letter "u" is already assigned to the "unread Mail count, but I
never use that one and therefore removed it before creating the paragraph
commanders.

I'm wondering if this would help your situation some. As Jonathan mentioned,
you could also set TrackPad commander gestures to some of these as well if the
Keyboard commander is still not working well for you.

HTH.

Later...

Re: Mac start sound

2020-02-16 Thread Karen Lewellen

Hi,
I can respect your experience. I, speaking personally, will not by a mac
that does not have the start up sound. Is not it amazing how individual
preferences makes computing really special?
Frankly, that sound is so much a part of pop culture, I am wondering how
the decision was made. what problem is solved by removing the sound for
everyone, that was not solved by allowing individuals to remove it if
desired?

We're just SOL as far as I'm aware. I've made noise to the powers that be, but

Re: Reading by sentence in books app

2020-02-16 Thread Phil Halton
Thanks Tim, that’s very good information and very well stated. I tried setting
up commander keys in both quick NAV and keyboard commanders and they wouldn’t
function in the books app on my particular book. I assumed they wouldn’t work
at all in any book. However it was my first go at setting up a commander
keystroke and I may have screwed it up somewhat. So, I’m going to try it again
using your directions. Thanks for the info.

Re: Controlling books on OS X with voice commands

2020-02-16 Thread Phil Halton
That’s very interesting Jonathan. I know I couldn’t get quick nap commander or
keyboard command or to work on the particular book I am trying to read. I know
I can read line by line but that really destroys the flow of the material I’m
trying to read. Line by line is not the same as sentence by sentence when
you’re trying to get a feel for the material. This is why I shy away from books
on iOS, because all you can do is read the entire page at a time or a line by
line mode by swiping down through the text.

Is it possible to control the reading of a book in the Books app via voice
commands, rather than keystroke commands. for example, saying next
 sentence, or prior sentence etc.?
Reading sentence by sentence on a apple Bluetooth keyboard is killing my
hands, enflaming a carpal tunnel Problem. I’m running the latest Catalina
 on a 2013 MacBook Air.

Please be as specific as possible as to the how, when and where of it.
 Thanks

2020-02-16 Thread 'Tim Kilburn' via MacVisionaries
Hi Phi.,

Yes, it can sometimes depend on the book whether or not it works sentence by
sentence at all. Some of the books published by Apple themselves, don't work
so well that way, but most novels I've tried seem to work fine.

Comment: Apple is wrong in the staff bag search case, and should fix it today,
9 to 5 Mac Friday, February 14, 2020

We learned yesterday that the California Supreme Court ruled against Apple in a
bag search case: deciding whether or not the company has to pay retail workers
for the time spent for their bags to be checked at the end of their shifts.
Staff had complained that they not only had to remain in the store for the time
taken by the search itself but could be waiting around up to 45 minutes in the
queue for the search - all of which time was unpaid.
This case dates back to 2013, with another case predating this class action
suit, and the thing I really can't believe is that Apple has been fighting it
for almost seven years.
It seems self-evident that Apple is in the wrong here. Indeed, back in 2015 CEO
Tim Cook seemed to have trouble believing it was even happening.
Papers from a failed class action suit by Apple Store staff reveal that at
least two retail employees complained directly to CEO Tim Cook about the policy
of subjecting them to anti-theft bag checks before they left the store. Tim
Cook forwarded the complaints to senior retail and HR executives, asking "Is
this true?".
The company's VP of human resources said at the time that 'there has to be a
more intelligent and respectful' approach than expecting staff to submit to
searches in their own time.
As the court has now correctly ruled, if a company requires an employee to
remain on its premises for any reason, then that time is by definition company
time and not personal time.
Chief Justice Tani Cantil-Sakauye explained that Apple employees "are clearly
under Apple's control while awaiting, and during, the exit searches."
"The exit searches burden Apple's employees by preventing them from leaving the
premises with their personal belongings until they undergo an exit search-a
process that can take five to 20 minutes to complete-and by compelling them to
take specific movements and actions during the search,"
the unanimous court said.
Now, I can understand how the policy may have arisen in the first place. It
might seem on paper that a search would take 30 seconds after they clock off.
But, equally, it must have become very quickly apparent to store managers that
the time taken is in practice far longer than this. That information should
have been communicated up the chain, and the policy should have been changed in
response.
Even if we forgive the inevitable bureaucracy of a large organization not
realizing at a senior level what was happening on the ground, the first lawsuit
should absolutely have prompted an investigation - and that investigation
should have resulted in a rapid change of policy.
It defies belief that Apple would not only fail to act on the first bag search
case, but to have been fighting this one all the way. Especially as anecdotal
evidence suggests that it hasn't actually carried out the searches for years
now.
This isn't a company wide practice. I worked there for 5 years and never had my
bag checked once. Even with access to BOH
- Benedict Bandersnatch (@_oscg) February 14, 2020 Cook should immediately
accept the ruling, apologize to staff and announce that Apple will issue
back-pay to all staff for the time spent on searches.
Of course, it won't be realistic to calculate that individually for each member
of staff, but an average should be taken and staff paid on that basis.

The bag search case has now become a major PR problem for the company. When
that happens, a rapid response is key. I think Cook's announcement should
happen today.
