Subject: Can't log into Macbook Air

I have access to a Macbook Air at my job. It has several logins enabled on it,
including mine. But when I turn it on, all I can get it to say at the login
screen is "user name". I've pressed every key and key combination I can think
of and I can't get it to let me log in. I need to get to the users scroll area
so I can select my user name and enter my password.

Twice now, I've gotten sighted assistance to log in but the people who have
helped me seem to think ther's nothing wrong. In other words, I can't get a
solid answer from them on how to avoid this problem in the future.

Re: OT: Airport extreme as extension to existing network

Hi Tim,

It’s curious. In earlier versions of airport utility, there was an option to
set things up manually. Now this option doesn’t seem to exist. Any other

Re: Possible Switch To VarioUltra Braille Display

2020-02-04 Thread Pete De Vasto
Thanks to both Donna and Brianna for your replies! Donna, the idea of being
able to read .docx and .pdf files is the biggest reason I want to make the
switch. User manuals for a couple of devices I have are in PDF format, and it
would be great to (no pun intended) have them right at my fingertips
immediately, rather than needing to convert them to text files for the
Actilino. The active Tactile control (ATC) function is, indeed, a cool concept,
and I have used it on occasion, but not as much as I thought I would. There are
lots of other functions that I don’t use hardly at all, either, so if I can, in
fact, get my hands on a V.U. I will probably be interested in selling my
Actilino to someone who might benefit from it. I will e-mail Mr. Feinberg today
and we’ll see what happens.

Thanks again for the useful info,
Pete

Re: OT: Airport extreme as extension to existing network

2020-02-04 Thread 'Tim Kilburn' via MacVisionaries
Hi,

Did you set the Airport to factory defaults? If yes, then when you first open
Airport Utility, VO-space on "Other WiFi Devices", then select the Extreme from
there, instead of pressing the "Next" button, press the "Other Options" button.
Select the item that says something about adding your device to an existing
network. I suggest you choose "to "Join" as opposed to "Extend". That seems
to be as granular as it can go now, but after you set it up, you can then go in
and get more detailed in your settings.

HTH.

Re: OT: Airport extreme as extension to existing network

2020-02-04 Thread 'Andrew Lamanche' via MacVisionaries
Yes, Tim, that’s what I’ve been doing. But with airport extreme 6th generation
whenever I choose “add to existing network” & press next button, it wants to
create a new wifi network anyway. I had a chat with an apple support chap
earlier on this morning but he couldn’t find a way and told me netgear
nighthawk might not be compatible with Apple AE and suggested I could only do
it via wired ethernet option, which defeats the object for me. However, I did
experiment a bit and connected AE to my router via ethernet, set it up to
extend network in this way and then tried to. edit the settings in the wireless
tab to extend the existing network (no join existing network was available).
So far so good. But when I updated the settings and AE restarted, I got an
error message that the station couldn’t join the wifi network specified and
that’s that. So I’m stuffed. I may have to phone the shop and ask whether I
can return the netgear. I’m a bit sad because it is a good fast router, and I
think it performs better on wifi than my extreme. Why is Apple so difficult
compatibility wise with other products. It’s ridiculous. A wireless station
like an AE should be able to join an existing wifi. What’s the problem?
Thanks, Tim, I suppose it’s the end of the road.

Re: How to stop and start recording within the same file using Quicktime?

2020-02-04 Thread Brad Snyder
Assuming you are on a Mac, try using the Spacebar. it performs a play/pause
action when playing a file, perhaps it does the same when recording.

Writing Documents using Catalina

2020-02-04 Thread Paul Hopewell
Hello,
I find checking document layout particularly difficult using VO on Catalina.
When at work I used a mark up language a bit like html with tags for new
paragraphs, numbered and bulleted lists, list items, heading levels, and title
pages. Using this I could be confident that the document layout was good.
Is there any VO friendly App for Mac OS Catalina which uses mark up tags to
create a document and then process it to create PDF or DOCX files?
Many thanks for any tips.

Paul Hopewell

That doesn't work. when you press space it stops the recording, but is replaced

Re: OT: Airport extreme as extension to existing network

2020-02-04 Thread 'Sabahattin Gucukoglu' via MacVisionaries
Unfortunately, the answer is, “I’m sorry Andrew, I’m afraid I can’t do that.”

The problem is that the AirPort Express supports the STA (station) proxy mode,
wherein each Ethernet and Wi-Fi device connected to the extension is proxied to
your existing network as a Wi-Fi station itself. This is how most “repeater”
products still work. It’s particularly awesome when you’ve got an Ethernet-only
device and want it talking to your wireless network.

The Time Capsule and Extreme never had this functionality. Instead, you use WDS
(Wireless Distribution System) if you want a wireless backbone. That requires
support from both sides of the bridge, but worse, it impairs performance for
anybody connected to the extender, by exactly half for every traversal through
a bridge.

If you can get your Netgear to use WDS, that’s the way. Otherwise you’ll have
to use an Ethernet backbone or purchase a different extender. Sorry about that.
Ethernet is always preferable, of course, but it’s not always practical.

The way that you get to the setup mode of the Extreme is to reset it. When you
join the network either on macOS or in iOS, you’ll get a special
AirPort-specific setup regime.

I will miss my AirPort product when it finally dies. But I think I’ll be moving
to Netgear’s Nighthawk for a simple base station arrangement in the traditional
style. The Time Capsule is rendered obsolete as soon as the internal hard disk
dies, and that’s already happened to me once. Time to move on, I fancy, and
remember the good times.

Cheers,
Sabahattin

Re: How to stop and start recording within the same file using Quicktime?

2020-02-04 Thread Karen Lewellen

Donna,
I hope this makes sense but I found these instructions. bare in mind I am
not using, just sharing.

first press escape to bring up the record bar.
I am assuming quicktime is already presently active.
Then hold down alt option to bring up the pause button
you should? then be able to select the pause button in the usual way.
Unfortunately the directions for resuming recording indicate choosing the
red button, which I hope is labeled somehow.

I found this information by searching the term,
"how to pause and resume recording in quicktime?"
One result refers to pausing with the details there.
Hope this works!
Kare

Adding mailbox tabs on MacOS mail program

2020-02-04 Thread Raul A. Gallegos
Hello all, checking to see if there is a faster way of adding additional
mailboxes to the tabs in the Mac Mail program. Currently I’m using the
CMD+OPTION+N command, then choosing another mailbox. After that, I press
CMD+Accent to switch between the TABS. However, I’m not sure if this is the
best recommended method for a keyboard user.

Thanks for any tips.

Re: Can't log into Macbook Air

2020-02-04 Thread Raul A. Gallegos
Hi, another suggestion is if you hear user name scroll area, you need to
interact with the scroll area. Then VO+LEFT/RIGHT will take you to the user
name in question so you can VO+Space to select it. Otherwise, you will need to
manually log in as others have suggested.

Re: Adding mailbox tabs on MacOS mail program

2020-02-04 Thread John Panarese
If you add mailboxes to your favorites bar, you can set it up so that you
can use command-1, command-2, command-3, etc, to switch between mailboxes. By
default, for example, command-1, is your unified inbox.

You are welcome.
Perhaps? it may be time to ask Apple accessibility? The impression I got
from searches is that the task is not especially simple. meaning its not
just you!

Re: How to stop and start recording within the same file using Quicktime?

2020-02-04 Thread 'Danny Keys' via MacVisionaries
Hello,
While I have not found any way to pause and resume, there is a way to accomplish
a similar conclusion.
This is what I do.

1. open quick time.
2. setup for an audio recording.
3. Move to the record play button and press the space bar and start talking.
4. When done with this first file, I press space to stop the recording.
5. Press Command S and save the file with a name, something like 01.
6. Close that file.
7. Start a new audio recording.
9. contenu talking where you left off.
10. Save that file as 02.
11. Close this file.

12. Open the first file, 01.
14. Go to the edit menu and select add clip to end and activate it.
15. Go to open and open the second file, 02.
17. Press done.
Exit and save the new file with a name that applies to your recording.
Now, you can open this new file and you will hear a smoothly spliced file.
Hope this helps.

Re: How to stop and start recording within the same file using Quicktime?

2020-02-04 Thread Michael Marshall
Hey, I have found a solution.
taken from applevis and i have just tested and it worked.

So, when you are recording something, and you want to pause the recording, hold
down the option key. If The vo cursor is over the stop recording button, after
you hold down the option key, this button will change into pause recording.
Now, while continuing to hold down the option key, press space. The recording
will be paused. The button will now say, resume recording

Re: Adding mailbox tabs on MacOS mail program

2020-02-04 Thread John Panarese
I would use the Shift-VO-command-spacebar method of dragging and dropping.
In my experience, it works more reliably then the VO standard way. Once you get
the mailboxes on the favorites bar, you can arrange them however you like.

Re: Writing Documents using Catalina

2020-02-04 Thread 'Jason White' via MacVisionaries
You could install MacTeX and then write your document in LaTeX with whatever
text editor you prefer. TextMate would be a good option. Also, TeXShop (part of
the MacTeX distribution) seems to be fairly accessible.

Another possibility would be to write in Markdown, then use Pandoc to convert
the document to PDF or HTML. However, if you want greater control of layout and
presentation, LaTeX is the right tool to use.

For a good introduction:
http://latex.silmaril.ie/formattinginformation/index.html

If you want to write papers or books with a bibliography and references, there
are automatic citation generation tools for both Pandoc and LaTeX.

Hello,
I find checking document layout particularly difficult using VO on

new paragraphs, numbered and bulleted lists, list items, heading levels, and
title pages. Using this I could be confident that the document layout was good.
Is there any VO friendly App for Mac OS Catalina which uses mark up tags to
create a document and then process it to create PDF or DOCX files?
Many thanks for any tips.

Safari on a Mac

is there a way to prevent Safari from suggesting a password when I'm signing up

read them letter by letter to write them down. of course I can press "don't
use" but they keep popping up.

thanks.
