Really? I’m not familiar with that command. What is it’s broader function?

Thanks, Tim, I will give this a try.
Cheers,

Re: How do I disconnect a Facetime call on my iPad?

2020-02-03 Thread 'Tim Kilburn' via MacVisionaries
Hi,

It does exactly what a two-finger double-tap does. I can't remember exactly
what Apple calls it, but essentially, you can use it to answer calls,
pause/start music etc.

I”ve tried VO Minus while playing music, and it does not start/stop playing.
Even if iTunes is brought to the front there is no effect. Are you sure of this

Hi Dave,

This command only works on iOS and iPadOS keyboards. It does not work for
MacOS. I did actually take the effort to see what Apple calls this key
combination. It is "Magic Tap".

Re: Adjusting the Option+T Date/Time Announcement

2020-02-03 Thread 'Tim Kilburn' via MacVisionaries
Hi,

You'll need to first make a copy of the Script Editor file and place it on your
Desktop because you're not allowed to modify active scripts in this location.

• Open Macintosh HD, Library, Scripts, VoiceOver, Time of Day.applescript
• cmd-c to Copy.
• Bring focus to your Desktop, then press cmd-v to Paste.
• VO-shift-m on this new Desktop version and choose Open With.
• From the sub-menu, select ScriptEditor.
• Interact with the Script source area and read through it for fun.

Down closer to the bottom, you'll find a line that starts with "set currentTime
to " blah blah blah

• highlight this entire command and remove it in order to replace it with the
following:

set currentTime to ((currentDate's weekday) as text) & " " & ((currentDate's
month) as text) & " " & ((currentDate's day) as text) & ", " & (currentHour as
text) & ":" & ((currentMinutes) as text) & " " & amPM as text

Since we're having so much fun, you can read the contents of the above line and
note that I only added one extra item before the currentMonth item. The new
item pertains to the weekday that is already part of the (current date) within
Apple Script.

While in Apple Script, you can press cmd-r to run the script and see if what
you've done returns the correct phrase for you. If it's all good, you'll need
to now save and move the modified script back into the proper location.

So,

• press cmd-s to Save the new modified script.
• Press cmd-q to Quit Script Editor.
• Navigate to the Time of Day script on your Desktop and press cmd-c to Copy.
• Navigate to, and open, Macintosh HD, Library, Scripts, VoiceOver.
• cmd-v to Paste the new, modified version of your script and replace it when
asked.
• Close up all the Finder windows.

Now, pressing right-option-t should now say "Monday, February 3, 2020".

OT: Airport extreme as extension to existing network

2020-02-03 Thread 'Andrew Lamanche' via MacVisionaries
Hi,

I’m in a dreadful quandary. I’ve managed to setup my new Netgear X6 R8000
router successfully using web interface. However, I’ve hit a problem in that I
am not able to setup my old (6 gen) airport extreme to join the existing
network. I can see the airport extreme in airport utility and I start setting
it up but it defaults to wanting to create a new network whenever I choose the
option to add to existing network. I don’t understand why. Any clues? It’s
so frustrating. I should be able to do so. I’ve managed to add airport
express to the existing network with netgear as main router but extreme refuses
to give me this option.

many thanks

Andrew

Can't log into Macbook Air

2020-02-03 Thread Todor Fassl
I have access to a Macbook Air at my job. It has several logins enabled
on it, including mine. But when I turn it on, all I can get it to say at
the login screen is "user name". I've pressed every key and key
combination I can think of and I can't get it to let me log in. I need
to get to the users scroll area so I can select my user name and enter
my password.

Twice now, I've gotten sighted assistance to log in but the people who
have helped me seem to think ther's nothing wrong. In other words, I
can't get a solid answer from them on how to avoid this problem in the
future.

Re: Can't log into Macbook Air

2020-02-03 Thread 'Tim Kilburn' via MacVisionaries
Hi,

It sounds like File Vault is enabled. When you turn VO on at that point, does
the voice sound more mechanical? If this is indeed the case, you just need to
type the username in as it appears in the System Prefs. After entering the
username, press return, then you should hear the computer say "Password".
Enter the password, and it will continue the login process and you should be
fine after it finishes the startup procedure.

Re: Can't log into Macbook Air

2020-02-03 Thread Jonathan Cohn
It is slightly possible that your account has not been enabled for File vault
logins. I remembered there being a dialog in ElCapitan systems where one could
list the users that were allowed to login at the file vault screen or something
similar to that. I couldn’t find that. But in any case, when you here
“Username” you should be able to type your username except the Macintosh won’t
speak what you type.

Re: How to drag and drop in Mail or iTunes

2020-02-03 Thread Kevin Gibbs
Tim and Co.

Sorry to bring this thread back up. Tim’s suggestion works great with one
exception. I can move mailboxes around but I can’t distinguish how to move a
mailbox so that it appears immediately below the point where I release the
mouse. Invariably, I end up putting the moved mailbox within the mailbox where
I release the mouse. I have enough vision to physically move a mailbox and
place it such that a thin blue line appears, telling me to double tap and
release the mouse. But there must be a command that distinguishes between
putting the moving mailbox within the destination and putting it below the
destination. What am I doing wrong?

Thanks,
Kevin

Possible Switch To VarioUltra Braille Display

2020-02-03 Thread Pete De Vasto
Hi, I’m thinking to switch from my Actilino to the VarioUltra 20 Braille
display. That display has come up on this list before, but of course I didn’t
follow the threads. I’d love to hear from folks who have an Ultra with thoughts
about how it works with both Mac and iOS devices. I’ve read some good things
about it, but I’m also having trouble figuring out if the display is even still
available.

I apologize as this may be a bit off topic, but I’m not sure where else to go
for info at this point.

Thanks in advance,
Pete De Vasto

It's called Magic Tap because this is the only gesture that can be
programmed to perform a different action within a specific app.

Re: Possible Switch To VarioUltra Braille Display

2020-02-03 Thread Brianna Snyder
Hi Pete,

Firstly, the display isn't available at this time, though there are rumors that
a company will start producing them soon.
If they ever do go back into production, though, I highly recommend the
VarioUltra. It's very versatile, as you can have up to 4 Bluetooth devices and
1 USB device connected all at once. I use mine mostly to read Bookshare books,
as you can store files on the display itself.

I hope you find a display that best suits your needs,
Brianna

Re: Possible Switch To VarioUltra Braille Display

2020-02-03 Thread 'Donna Goodin' via MacVisionaries
Hi Pete and Brianna,

Actually, according to info I've received recently, it is back in production,
and there is a U.S. distributor.

I absolutely love my VU. It works great with Mac and IOS. Its design is small,
light, and portable. I don't have need for this often, but I love that it can
read docx files and PDFs. As far as I'm concerned, it's the best braille
display currently available. I know there are some who like the Handytech
displays, the ActiveBraille and Actilino, but since I don't have $6700, I
haven't tried them out.

Here's my most recent info on the Vario, from Igore Finberg:
"Sales wise, you can purchase any former Baum blind or low vision products from
Insidevision Inc. All products have a two year warranty. I will update you all
on the progress in setting up service centers, but if you have an immediate
need for repair or sales, please send me an email. I will do my best to reply
within 24 hours.

Best regards,
Igor Feinberg
CEO, Insidevision Inc.

Cheers,
Donna
