RE: Question for Apple TV users regarding sound bar

2019-06-14 Thread Simon Fogarty
Hi mary,

I think I saw this reply from Tim also.

The newer 4th gen tvs don't have the optical connection.

This is why my sonos play bar connects to my Samsung tv and then my apple tv
also but using HDMI connects to the Samsung tv also.

I then had to disable the Samsung tv's speakers to ensure the sound came
through the sonos systems.

I know my apple tv 3rd gen had optical input / output.

Hi Simon,
Well, it seems to me that we tried the sound bar that my husband currently
uses, which is one that exhibits the problem, with an optical cable. But I
could be wrong. That probably would’ve been with an older Apple TV. I have the
one just before the 4K these days, and I don’t even know if it has an optical
connection. Seems to me I remember that it doesn’t. But I will have to check
into it.

RE: New router or not?

2019-06-14 Thread Simon Fogarty
No reason why you can't use it as an access point in another part of the house
to extend your range,

You should have no issues connecting it via a network cable from one of the
ports on the back.

Re: Using My iPad, More and More

2019-06-14 Thread KliphnShari Miller
Yes, I helped teach a specific class on this just this spring. I haven’t
turned on my Mac mini in almost 4 months, I probably should just to update apps
and Mojave. But my iPad Pro 11 inch gets the job done for me, the reading of
email on the split screen is not bad at all. You just change your router to
containers as another member mentioned, and everything is smooth sailing. I am
even able to connect to my 2 servers, one at home, and one at my daughters
home. And there are a lot of new great features coming to iPad OS that will
make it even easier to navigate.

Hi,

I've primarily just left the defaults as is with success. I have also simply
left Archived messages going to the All Mail folder. Just make sure that you
have iMap enabled in the Gmail settings on your web interface. Regarding
expunging, as far as I know, that is the automatic elimination of deleted items
after a specific amount of time. I haven't properly read up on it, so anyone
is welcome to correct me if I'm mistaken.

Hi,

It sounds like there is something going on with the library database. If the
problem is still happening, let me know and I'll try to find the method for
repairing the database file.

Re: Everyday tasks that few people do anymore because of technology, USA Today

2019-06-14 Thread Pete De Vasto
Hi Mark and all,

Yes. This is a wonderful article. I wanted to read the original article because
it sounded like there were links to more detail about some of the things
mentioned. Hover, when I tried to open it from this e-mail, USA Today could not
find it. I discovered, and this has happened to me many times too, that the
link didn’t get copied correctly into the e-mail. I took a couple of minutes to
repair it, and wanted to share the one that will work in case anyone else might
be interested:

Time for warning messages.

2019-06-14 Thread Anders Holmberg
Hi!
There’s a setting in VoiceOver utility called if i direct translate from
Swedish show time for warning messages.
This can be checked or not and if checked you can set this from 1 to 6 seconds.
However i do want this to be turned off sometimes as it can mess up my reading.
But when turned off the braille does not show if i set something in the rotor,
for example headings or links or doesn’t show if i set speech on or off.
So i want to have a shortcut set on my braille display to toggle this on or off.
BUt when i try to find this i can’t do that in Voiceover utility.
Do i first need to set this as a shortcut on my keyboard and then set it on the
braille display?
I hope you can understand what i want to do?
Thanks.

Re: Question for Apple TV users regarding sound bar

2019-06-14 Thread Mary Otten
Hi Simon,
I have decided on a poke sound bar, from Amazon for 400 bucks. It had really
good reviews, including one by a blind person who said they were using an Apple
TV with it. It is the Polk audio magnifi max. It comes with a nice healthy
sized sub, so I am looking forward to a significant upgrade especially as
concerns movie viewing.

Re: reformatting 2009 iMac drive

2019-06-14 Thread 'Tim Kilburn' via MacVisionaries
Hi,

Do you already have the High Sierra installer? Or, does it already have High
Sierra on it? I ask this because it is slightly challenging to download the
High Sierra Installer app now that Mojave is the most current MacOS. It is
doable, but not as easy as just going to the App Store. Beyond all this, the
process is difficult to explain without knowing if you're hoping to do an
upgrade to your existing MacOS, or a complete clean install of High Sierra.

Hi,

Sorry. Took me a bit to get around to looking at this one. When you say that
you're changing the label of an unopened folder, what exactly are you doing?
Are you using the VO labelling feature, or something else? I've never modified
the name of a folder from the outside before, only while in the folder have I
ever messed with the title of the folder.

 Hello there
Well certainly, The new iPad iOS does have a lot to offer new iPads.
However, dance your question, I believe there are two ways to get this
done, i.e. and boss braille. However, work to do this is ongoing. I’m not
sure, but if iPadOS runs in implementation of CUPs, that shouldn’t be very
hard to do. If you have a custom PPD filter written for the printer, this
actually can be done. However, printers now do you have Wi-Fi support, so
this in fact it may be easier. What I’m worried about is the translation
of braille documents. And I’m not sure as to what capabilities the iPadOS
 actually has to handle that.

RE: reformatting 2009 iMac drive

2019-06-14 Thread Simon Fogarty
Hi,

Tim might think differently to me on this,

2 ways I would suggest are either you have a USB flash drive setup to be a
bootable installer with High sierra on it.
Not that complicated so log as you have an 8gb usb flash drive and obviously
the actual install media.

Or possibly the simpler one is turn the machine off,

Hold down the command and R keys then while holding them down power on the
machine and hold those keys for approx. 30 seconds or a little longer with the
2009 machine. Then let thos keys go and give the machine time to start up to
the mac os utilities

Note I should have said this will need a wi fi connection to get internet
access.

Then once up and running turn voiceover on and use disk utility to eraise the
drive
And then the install mac os option to install which is from the net and will be
possibly slow depending on what type of connection you have.

Quick and simple I know but there is slightly more but it’s more time related
than anything else.

Re: reformatting 2009 iMac drive

2019-06-14 Thread 'Tim Kilburn' via MacVisionaries
Hi,

OK, the easiest then.

1. Backup anything important if you can't easily get it from iCloud, Google or
wherever you do Cloud things.
2. Restart you're Mac.
3. As the startup chime sounds, hold down the cmd and r keys simultaneously
for about five or six seconds.
4. Patiently wait for about 3 minutes, then press cmd-f5 to turn VO on. If VO
doesn't come on, wait another minute then try again.
5. Choose your Language if that window appears. If it does not, then you
should be at the MacOS Utilities screen.
6. Click on Disk Utility then Click on Disk Utility in the table, then click
on Continue.
7. Once Disk Utility opens, select Macintosh HD from the table of connected
drives.
8. Stop interacting with that table, then interact with the ToolBar and click
on Erase.
9. Let it do its thing. When it's done, click on the Done button.
10. Quit Disk Utility by pressing cmd-q.
11. In the MacOS Utility, select Re-Install MacOS from within the table of
choices, then click Continue.
12. Follow the prompts through some Continues and Agrees.
13. Select Macintosh HD if it is not already selected.
14. Click Install.

For the most part, that's it. Let it do it's thing. If it restarts itself,
wait a few minutes, then press cmd-f5 to turn VO back on. If VO doesn't start
talking, wait a while longer and try again. Once it's all done, you should
hear a person say something about "MacOS 10 containing a built in screen reader
called VoiceOver". You can then turn VO on and enter the necessary info to
setup your Mac.

HTH.

Re: reformatting 2009 iMac drive

2019-06-14 Thread 'Tim Kilburn' via MacVisionaries
Hi,

Simon's method is quick and dirty. I forgot to mention the part about
connecting to WiFi. I'm used to doing this with an ethernet connection on
those older iMacs, so forgot to mention that part. Ethernet connections are
better for this, but if you were connected to WiFi before you started this
process, you should be OK, as it should remain connected to that network.

Re: Changing Folder Names in iOS 12

2019-06-14 Thread 'E.T.' via MacVisionaries

Tim,
It was never clear to me if I should do this with folder open or
unopened. I used the double tap and hold and have also used my braille
display to do it.

In this case, I ended up moving the apps to a new folder to fix it.

Hi,

Sorry.  Took me a bit to get around to looking at this one.  When you

else?  I've never modified the name of a folder from the outside before,
only while in the folder have I ever messed with the title of the folder.

Hi Simon,
I have decided on a poke sound bar, from Amazon for 400 bucks. It had really
good reviews, including one by a blind person who said they were using an Apple
TV with it. It is the Polk audio magnifi max. It comes with a nice healthy
sized sub, so I am looking forward to a significant upgrade especially as
concerns movie viewing.

Requesting Information on Checkwriting Apps

I have been a long-time user of the Talking Checkbook app but the app isn’t
