RE: Blume Wifi

2017-06-11 Thread Simon Fogarty
Yeah that I understand but the actual quality of it once it’s up and working is
what I’m looking for.

The mesh networking idea as you say has been around for a while but putting it
in the home will make life easy for full coverage.

But I was wondering how you power the repeaters or units around the house,
Does each one need to be plugged in to a power socket?

I’m kind of wondering if this might be a problem solver for my place and my
neighbours to allow us to share an internet connection therefore me make some
extra cash each month.

Hi Simon,

The way it seems to work is you connect via 1 or 2 gigabit ports to your
network. Either by placing the master unit in router mode and having it handle
the whole internet connection or in bridge mode where it provides the access
point function but you provide your own routing hardware. (This will be my
config). Once connected you start an app on your phone (iPhone in my case but
both platforms are supported) and you configure the first plume device. Then
you power up and add each new device to the mesh. You don’t run physical wires
to anything but the controller or master access point. The rest use backhaul
channels to build the mesh. Once you’ve added all the access points you want,
you get a box of 6 for $320 US, they connect to a cloud application where the
mesh starts to optimize itself. The meshes can either direct connect back to
the control access point and or hop from one to another if that’s more optimal.
The cloud software and access points will steer the clients to the best
frequency and access point based on it’s location with in the mesh. IF 2.4 ghz
suddenly becomes more speedy you’ll drop to 2.4 and then be steered back up to
5 ghz if that returns to normal. Also uses tactics to isolate you from your
neighbors and so forth. Cool stuff. Google is also working in this space as
is Netgear and Niro. Plume seems to rate the highest and perform the best in
testing from the reviews I’ve read though.

Cool stuff. Mesh WiFi was usually the stuff of big enterprises, nice to have
it in the home now.

This is absolutely correct. You cannot navigate in the login window for
FileVault. It doesn't matter how many users have accounts on the system, you
simply type your user name at the prompt and then your password. You cannot
choose the user as you can do with the normal login window. FileVault's login
window is prompted before the system disk even is accessed. It is a special
login window entirely. So, there is no automatic login for any account and the
option to have VoiceOver speak in the login window is not available for
FileVault login.

just type your username and press return. If it accepts your username, two

start entering my password, a tone is sounded for each key-press. After you
finish the password, press return and you should hear three tones if the

Paul,

As already mentioned, I don't believe there is an approach to move a VM to a
dedicated partition, but if there is then it would be either using a Windows or
VM tool, so you might get better answers from a more Windows based group
(GUI-talk?). But then, I find as long as I don't have too many Safari windows
open, that my VM are speedy enough for Outlook and testing accessibility of web
pages with JAWS, WindowEyes or NVDA. Remember especially that on the Macintosh
windows and applications will keep the same documents open when closed and
re-opened. So perhaps just reviewing all open applications/windows might
significantly help your performance if physical memory is running short on your
system.

Hopefully Windows will work much faster than using VMWare. I am not concerned

A complication is that I no longer have the install CDs for Windows or some of

Is such a migration possible? If so can it be done without sighted help? I have

Many thanks for any tips.

Well, if your current machine has all of the recent OS upgrades then yes. But
the migration tool does not clone your current computers drive and onto the new
machine. Instead it migrates the users home directories and account
information and Applications in the Applications directory from your current
computer that are not on your new computer. It will also get WiFi and clock
settings from your current computer and move that information into the
appropriate places on the new computer. If you installed an application in a
location other than /Applications, or modified Web Server settings or crontab
entries, don't expect those to be migrated, though they might be migrated.
Almost all settings from System Settings and Application specific settings
panels does get migrated to the new system.

Re: VIrtual box and other operating systems than windows.

2017-06-11 Thread 'Janina Sajka' via MacVisionaries
Thankfully, you don't have to rely on Voice Over when running Linux
shell level apps. Instead, you use Speakup, or brltty, or emacspeak, or
perhaps the new Henrii. Voice Over would be as bad at the Linux shell as
it is in the Mac terminal.

You might want VO in Linux graphical desktop apps, but it won't run
there, either. Instead, you use Orca.

Strange problem with bootcamp.

2017-06-11 Thread matthew dyer
Hi all,

Yesterday I was playing with bootcamp to see if I could get windows 10
installed and got the following message after hitting continue. This disk is
not journaled go to disk utility and enabl journaling. When I go to disk
utility to do so, the option is dimmed. In the info tab under Macintosh HD, it
shows that journaling is on. What else is going on. I tried first aid and it
said that my disk is ok. I really don’t want to reinstall Mac OS if I don’t
have to. I need to get an external. Hd before I do that as I want to have a
backup if possible. Any ideas on this one?

Thanks.

Re: VO bug logging in with Filevolt enabled

2017-06-11 Thread Kawal Gucukoglu
Hi.

I have been catching up with all my e-mails today so come late to this thread.

I have been using File Volt for a long time and after getting voice over to
come on in the login screen in preferences, it did not work when I shut down
and restarted the computer. It makes a bleep for you to enter your user name
and once you press return, another bleep for you to enter your password.

Hi,

Yes, as long as you have some method by which it can contact you. When you hit
"Forgot Password", it will either ask you to answer your questions, or send you
an eMail to the old address. If you can still recall those answers, or if you
have access to the old eMail, then you could gain access to that old Apple ID.
Once you have access to it, you need to make it your primary Apple ID and make
the new one a family member. The family members have access to the primary
person's purchases and their own, whereas the primary seems to only have access
to their own purchases, unless things have changed.

Re: VO bug logging in with Filevolt enabled

2017-06-11 Thread Tim Kilburn
Simon,

Are you doing this from complete shutdown or restart? With File Vault enabled,
the initial login screen after restart or shutdown is pre-system load-up, thus
VO is not usually available. After you've got past this screen, then can be a
second login which is totally available. Now, I'm running an older MBP, so
it's possible that things act differently in newer Mac models, but I'm not
certain. It seems problematic though if VO was available at the initial Login
screen as that would mean that unrestricted access to much of the file system
would be gained before the password was required.

Re: VO bug logging in with Filevolt enabled

2017-06-11 Thread Dan
Hello list,
Here's my 2 cents worth.
I'm currently running the latest OS12 on my MBP 2014 model year machine. I have
5 accounts on this machine and the system is FileVault encrypted. I have VO set
to come on during login.
This is what happens when I boot the machine.
1. the machine starts.
2. After a few seconds, VoiceOver asks for my account name.
3. After I type my account name and press enter, the machine asks for my
password.
4. I type in my password and hit enter.
5. The machine emits 3 short beeps and boots to the main screen of what ever
account I have booted in to.
Note, if I type the password incorrectly, the machine wants me to type it in
again.
This is just how it works for me.

Re: VO bug logging in with Filevolt enabled

2017-06-11 Thread Jonathan Cohn
Simon,

Either you have the older version of File Vault enabled or else they eliminated
functionality in some systems. I just tried your instructions, and the vo keys
with arrows shift arrows and control arrows say nothing when on the initial
boot screen. This is true on both my MacBook Air (11-inch, Early 2015) and my
MacBook Pro 2015 bought in June 2016.

of course there is the slight possibility that since I changed my default login
screen to have text entry for the user name that the firmware based user name /
password fields are behaving the same. The firmware login has three phrases it
will speak, username, password, and user name or password incorrect.

.
Best wishes,

Jonathan Cohn

No, it's not working here either. I just created a few accounts on my Mac
Book Pro and I am not getting any functionality for navigating in the initial
FileVault screen. I'm only prompted for my user name and then my password.

I guess I get the same results as the rest of you are getting when my 2014 MBP
running Sierra boots up . it doesn't say anything until it starts up then it
asks for username, and I found out that after I type the username, I can tab
and it will prompt for the password. Then I tap enter aget the three beeps and
proceed into the syhstem.

Life is 10% what happens, and how you take it, and 90% what you do about it,
and what you make of it.

Hi!
Yes!
I did that today and it works but it was a bit of a struggle.
You have to use the mouse commands in voiceover to get things work.

Re: VIrtual box and other operating systems than windows.

2017-06-11 Thread Jonathan Cohn
There is one possibility of using VoiceOver when working with a Linux VM but I
would expect it would not work very well.

1. Start Linux VM.
2. Start X11 server on the Macintosh and have it connect to the VM.
3. Try using VoiceOver with the X11 Screens.

I have no idea if the X11 window server which is now a download from the Apple
and not usually installed on the OS has any hooks to work with VOiceOVer. But
then the last time I used X11 was in 2009. Hmm, I wonder if XTank would work
with VoiceOVer?

Best wishes,

Jonathan Cohn

 Scott,
I am curious, if one uses this program to connect to a different operating

By which I mean does Voiceover work even in these different environments?

Yes, this is a good thing. If you are not using an app, there is absolutely no
reason for it to be tracking your location, it serves no purpose and probably

You power them by plugging them in. They are small pods that just sit around

Re: Blume Wifi

2017-06-11 Thread 'Chris Blouch' via MacVisionaries
I have Gb internet at work and the only thing I've found that will fill
the pipe is Apple updates. I think it's peaked at 112MB/s download
getting an iOS update. Everything else seems to have bottlenecks
elsewhere the cap the throughput.

either direct connect back to the control access point

The cloud software and access points will steer the
clients to the best frequency and access point based on
it’s location with in the mesh. IF 2.4 ghz suddenly
becomes more speedy you’ll drop to 2.4 and then be
steered back up to 5 ghz if that returns to normal. Also
uses tactics to isolate you from your neighbors and so

read though.
Cool stuff. Mesh WiFi was usually the stuff of big
enterprises, nice to have it in the home now.

 Hi,

That is correct. The Finder cannot be closed, nor does it need to be.
Things like Spotlight are usually services, not apps, thus when you
 close
it, the Finder is still considered the running application, but focus

not within the correct window. The cmd-tab I mentioned will bring
 focus
back to the correct Finder window and you should be fine to proceed.

If you still have questions, feel free to ask away.

It may have something to do with the Family situation, although I'm not

RE: VO bug logging in with Filevolt enabled

2017-06-11 Thread Simon Fogarty
I'm just wondering if the person that had this issue at the start can advise if
they get the start up tones from their Mac when they power it on?

I found at work today that a machine had been muted or at least the start up
tones had been muted and therefore VO wouldn't start up at the log in screen,
yet after restarting the start up tones vo worked fine at start up.

Hello,

This login is a very limited system screen and though it sounds similar to
VoiceOver it is not VoiceOVer It will say user name until you enter a legit
user name something like "john" or "joncohn" and hit enter once your user name
has been accepted it will say password. If you enter the correct password then
in a few seconds you will have all the normal functionality available or else
it will say username or password incorrect.

My experience has been I have to type in all the characters of my username I
have never found a way to do this with arrow keys and certainly the VO style
keys I have found to do nothing.

As in plugging them in to mains power and they then pick up the wifi network

You power them by plugging them in. They are small pods that just sit around
the property. You can mesh as many as you want together they come in boxes of
1 3 and 6 I believe.
