Can I get my mackbook to be a little more patience when waiting for a command

2017-04-09 Thread Andy
Hi all.

I've purchased the book Janet Ingber - Everything You Need to Know to Use
the Mac and this is in txt format on my computer and JAWS is reading out the
chapters for me.

I'm at a section titled Configuring Your Mac to Work Well with VoiceOver. This
highlights several changes that I should make to help using the Mac more fun.

Trouble is that when I hold down the VO keys and M and then turn to my JAWS
computer for the next bit and return, it's too late, my Mac has gone to the
desktop, rather than wait for my response.

Is there a way to ask my Mac to give me a little more time when it's waiting
for a command from me?

Any advice would be very welcome.

Very best wishes.

Andy.

Re: Outlook 2016 or Apple mail

2017-04-09 Thread Donna Goodin
Hi John,

Thank you. This is really helpful and good to know. I'm hoping I can just
install Word, and not have to deal with the whole office suite, but I am not
sure about that yet.

Just curious, is there anyone on list who has experience with both using Word
for the Mac, and running Word in Windows using Fusion? Which gives the better
experience in Word? That's obviously another option. I have no interest in
polluting my Mac by putting Windows on it, but if there is a good reason to, I
would consider it.
Cheers,
Donna

Hi Dan,
There is one possibility!
Turn sound down to zero, “function eleven” repeatedly, and then “command five”

“Function ten” can turn “muting on, but this action is also announced.

Re: Outlook 2016 or Apple mail

2017-04-09 Thread Larry Thacker Jr.
I use Word on the Mac just because I’m more familiar with it, having used it on
Windows for nearly 20 years. You have to make some adjustments for apple
keystrokes, but it is usable. Item chooser is a good way to get to the ribbon
controls. Some of them you work with by VO-shift-M and other’s you just have
to interact with, but hints do say when you need the extra step. One extremely
annoying problem I had was that when switching to and from the app or sometimes
even using functions within the app, the document would jump back up to the
top. I finally discovered that Word is best used with cursor tracking turned
off. The down side is that sometimes VO will not be where you want it for
context related options like correcting spelling or grammar, but you can use
the VO to Keyboard focus hotkey, which I still forget the sequence for, to get
it in sync or briefly turn cursor tracking back on. I tried setting up an
activity to turn it off when in word, but it caused my computer to hang when
waking up from sleep. It’s disconcerting when some things don’t work as
expected because tracking is off, but it beats running Windows.

To the original question, I can’t compare apples to apples (forgive the bad
pun) since I never installed the Mac version of Outlook, but that one will come
down to personal preference provided accessibility remains constant. Outlook
is the king of ways to organize and flag your mail. At work where I’m forced
to used Windows, I employ these features to manage my inbox as a to-do list so
that I don’t have to flip to different screens to manage my day. Mac Mail
can’t touch that. However, overall I prefer Mac mail at home for it’s unified
inbox since I have multiple email accounts. A combination of reminders and a
service called followupthen.com keeps my home life on task.

I find that it conveniently separates mailing list messages from messages
addressed directly to me, and it does so automatically. The notifications
 it
creates on the lock screen are also useful. I think Microsoft Outlook for

demonstrates that programmers in Redmond have been paying attention to

Oh and yes the office installer will allow you to install only the programs you
want. I don’t know if they sell the programs themselves separately anymore and
suspect that may not be the most economical solution if available. Could be
wrong on that though.

I have never used word on the Mac, I really have no need since text edit does
what I want it too. As it comes to outlook and apple mail? I have to give the
thumbs up to apple mail, it organizes by thread, gives you a unified in box,
and I love the jump to favorites feature on the Mac, wish there was a way to do
this on phone!lol. I used the office suite on windows from 2005, until 2013.
I got my first Mac in 2011, but ran windows in fusion for 2 years. Once I
realized that text edit, and sometimes pages could do what I needed it to do, I

I have only experienced this when a new window is created and focus changes to
it. Were you giving vo-M as an example multi-step command, or was that the
specific command you issued? Also, what application were you in while doing
this? Generally, I have seen no place to adjust timeouts in the VoiceOVer
settings or VoiceOver utility.

Best wishes,

Re: Can I get my mackbook to be a little more patience when waiting for a command

Hello Andy,

Your Mac shouldn’t be going back to the desktop all the time. Where are you
trying to make the changes? Perhaps you’re touching something such as the
trackpad without realising it.

Cheers,

Re: Silently toggle voiceover

2017-04-09 Thread Jonathan Cohn
Hmm, Could this be done with Audio Hijack or Sound Flower? Basically have one
of those apps steal all sound and route it to /dev/null? I guess another
possible solution would be to create another sound output device controller and
go into VoiceOver Utility and re-route VoiceOver output to that device. This
would allow other sound output to occur but limit VoiceOver output. I expect
that if the desire is for editing sound on your Macintosh or giving a that you
would also want a quick way to route sound to the no sound device and back to
default sound device.

Perhaps though I am thinking too much into the problem and all the original
poster needed was the mute functionality.

Best wishes,

Jonathan Cohn

Re: Support for word processor styles in VoiceOver under Mac OS

2017-04-09 Thread Jonathan Cohn
Can you get the style from the ribbon? We were talking last week about pages
and it was mentioned that putting a hotspot on the style area could have pages
speak the style as it gets updated. I would expect that the same could be done
in Word, though I don't have my system around to test my theory.

Re: VPN questions

2017-04-09 Thread Eric Oyen
well,
depending on whether you use a free or paid service will make a difference in
both service quality and setup. I use a paid service myself. It's $7 a month
and is fairly reliable. I have tried some free services, but they are mostly
hit and miss and are not always as secure. the service I use is located here:
www.privateinternetaccess.com and they have both client software or you can
setup manually. Unfortunately, their client software for the mac is not
accessible, so I use a manual setup in the preferences pane. It works
reasonably well. I have also done the manual setup in windows 7. This has
allowed me to be able to have dropbox and a few other services when I am behind
a firewall (like over at Voc rehab) THeir IT folks have gotten on my case more
than once, until I pointed out to them that their own policy does not forbid
the use of a vpn (it does, however, forbid the use of sharing services that are
unprotected on their networks). I even had one of them try to break into my
machine (at my request) and they found it well nigh impossible. I had the
firewall on that win 7 box setup so that only traffic on the VPN was allowed in
or out and everything else got dropped. That took a lot of heavy customization
on my part to make it work.

so, if you want to run a VPN, which these days is pretty much going to be a
must now that ISP's aren't required to keep your info private, it is highly
recommended.. btw, a lot of the free vpn services are not all that bandwidth
friendly. thats why I use the service I do. they can support up to 20
Mbits/sec. for what I do, thats a must have.

Re: VPN questions

2017-04-09 Thread Jonathan Cohn
Eric,

I just want to correct one thing. The elimination of the ISP can't collect
traffic rule here in the US essentially does not change anything. Congress can
not actually shutdown entire rules without Agency changes unless they are brand
new rules. The privacy rules were I believe supposed to go into effect in June,
and don't forget even if those rules had gone into effect Google would still be
collecting and selling your data. In fact, be wary of any free or very
inexpensive internet based service, software does not just get created out of
thin air, companies pay good money for developers, and disk space costs
something too.

In fact one reason, congress did not like the new FCC rules was that they only
provided a that no equivalent protections of privacy could be leveraged by the
FCC over search engines, since the FCC only regulates the pipes and the FTC
would regulate other internet services.

Please forgive any specific inaccuracies in this post, I am going off of
materials I read in tidbits.com and severalpodcasts that I listened to over a
week ago.

Best wishes,

Jonathan

Not sure exactly what you are talking about. IOS 9 and 10 do have government

Jaws very choppy in VMWare fusion

2017-04-09 Thread Eric Brinkman
Hello all,

I've always been disappointed by how choppy and breaky Jaws is when
running in VMWare fusion. I just upgraded from Windows 7 to Windows
10 and Jaws is still choppy. I will be reading a line and Jaws will
suddenly stop, sometimes with a bit of a stutter, and will resume but
miss a few words. Do I need to switch to Bootcamp or can anything
else be done?

Thanks in advance.
Eric

Here is an Informative Article on How To Extend Battery Life on iOS and Android Devices

2017-04-09 Thread M. Taylor
Hello All,

The following article, the link to which is located at the end of the text,
is an Informative piece on how to extend battery life on iOS and Android
devices.

Enjoy,

How I added four hours of battery life to my smartphone every day for free
By Jennifer Jolly, Special for USA TODAY, April 9, 2017

Phone constantly dying? Here's how to get back battery life

Columnist Jennifer Jolly describes how to check if emails and apps are
draining your smartphone way too fast and what measures won't help. Jennifer
Jolly for USA TODAY

I've had big-time battery drain issues on my last three iPhones. I just
figured it was my fault - maybe I'm too addicted to apps, take too many
photos, or just use my phone too much?

It's an issue I've gone to Apple for help with many times. But the Genius's
- Apple's retail support - were flummoxed, too. After the typical
troubleshooting: Update iOS? Check. Adjust screen brightness? Check. Use
Wi-Fi when possible, turn off location services, and tone down
notifications? Check, check, and check again. Nothing seems to solve the
issues. Maybe I got the phone wet?

It was time to kick things up to the next level. I enlisted experts like
Scotty Loveless, a former Apple Genius and iOS tech who told me this would
not be another, "turn off every useful feature of iOS posts." because those
"really grind my gears." Finally, someone speaking my language!

With that said, here's how I finally beat the worst of my battery battles -
and now you can, too.

#1 Start with your own battery test

Your battery should only be doing its heavy lifting when you're actually
using your iPhone, and the rest of the time it should be relaxing in standby
mode. Sometimes an app prevents your phone from going into standby and
wreaks havoc on your battery life.

Here's how to test it:

Go into Settings > Battery. Scroll all the way down to the bottom and you'll
find two numbers, one for Standby and one for Usage. Your Usage number
should be way, way lower than your Standby number. If it's not, you might
have a problem, and you can confirm it by jotting down your Standby and
Usage times and then clicking the lock button on your phone. Let it sit for
about five minutes and then check the numbers again. If your Standby time is
five minutes higher, you're in good shape, but if your Usage time has bumped
up by a more than a minute it's a sign that your phone isn't resting like it
should.

On Android, you can get the same information under Settings > Device >
Battery (or Settings > Battery if you have a newer version of Android). The
information on this menu is essentially the same as it is on an iPhone, and
lists "Device Idle" which is the same as standby mode.

If you find that your phone isn't "resting" when you're not using it,
there's likely a very clear reason, which brings us to #2.

#2 Don't push me

When an app is doing things even when you're not using it, it could be
malfunctioning, and stuck in an endless loop that's draining all your power.
That's what happened to me, with, of all things, one of the email accounts I
had connected to my phone. Loveless picked up on this right away. "This
happens unbelievably often, especially with Exchange push email," he said.
"I knew when you told me your phone typically dies within six hours of being
off the charger, and the Standby and Usage are the same. Sometimes, these
times are not the same because the 'firmware is bad or corrupted,' but this
time it's because push email is keeping the phone from sleeping properly."

The fix was simple.

Go into Settings > Mail > Accounts> Fetch New Data. Mine was automatically
set to Push. Loveless recommended that I set it turn that off temporarily
and set it to Fetch every 15 to 30 minutes instead. You can also use the
Manual mode, which only scans for new messages when you actually open the
email app.

You can also tweak the push settings to fetch new emails only every hour or
so, which is also a big help. You don't sacrifice timely email updates
either, though you'll still save the most power by disabling push emails
altogether.

On an Android phone, you can manage the push notification settings for any
apps that use it by heading into Settings > Apps and then picking an app and
tweaking its individual settings.

#3 When background apps are the killer

There are other times too when an app is running when you're not using it
and that's called "Background App Refresh." There are lots of reasons apps
update in the background, like the Music app fetching new playlists,
Facebook updating your social feeds, and even Pokemon Go keeping an eye on
your steps so you can hatch eggs. It's all in the name of convenience, but
it might also be leaving you with a dead battery halfway through the
afternoon.

To check out which apps are eating up valuable power in the background go to
Settings > Battery and you'll see a list of the apps taking up your battery
life, with the topmost app being the biggest power hog. If you see an a

Re: VPN questions

2017-04-09 Thread Eric Oyen
not a problem. there are other reasons to use a VPN. However, 2 things I do
when using google:
1. I am not signed in
2. I always use a VPN when searching.

Also, of late, I have been having some trust issues with my current ISP. It
seems that they sent me a notice of copyright infringement about a shared file.
only problem, I was not sharing anything. So, I had to do a full blown security
audit of my machines and network. I did, eventually, found where the issue was
(the Lingsys router I have here had a security vulnerability that couldn't be
easily closed. As a result, one of my neighbors was using it to share files.
so, even though I had the thing password protected, it was still using a number
of items that made breaking the password trivially easy with the right
software. I finally managed to get a handle on the situation by turning off the
PIN the device had, turning off SSID broadcast and engaging MAC filtering. I
still can't completely trust the device, so I use a VPN pretty much all the
time now.

I am looking to upgrade the hardware though. A kit from Routerboard that I can
install an image of OpenBSD on would make things a lot better here. THere are
optional add-ons like WiFi B/G/A/N, a bridged set of LAN ports, an all weather
housing, etc. Once that is done and installed, I can install the VPN package
for OpenBSD on there, set it up to handle that and not worry too much. Then, if
I want to be ultra secure, I would continue to use a VPN tunnel from my
machine, thus doubling the protection.

Now, as to why I would want to use a VPN for other than just security? It's
simple. there are some programs hosted on the web that might be regionally
restricted (like sports events). So, I would want to be able to listen legally
and not be caught up in a blackout zone. Thus, VPN allows me to place my end
point elsewhere (like NYC, Sanfransisco, Detroit, Dallas, or even a foreign
country). A VPN also gets around what my ISP does when I am viewing something
like Hulu or Netflix (they try to lower the QoS for video streaming on content
that directly competes with their cable programming). With a VPN, they can't
see the type of traffic, so they can't change its priority. They have yet to
start doing so on encrypted tunnels. Besides, I am paying for a specific level
of service and I hate it when the ISP decides that my traffic needs to be
shaped. I don't have video here, so I expect full service. btw, I have already
filed a number of complaints over this issue with both the FCC and the FTC.
each time, my service gets maxed out for a few months and then they start the
games again.

Now, I am paying for 50 megabit/second service here and when the VPN is active,
I can still get 40 through. Thats not bad, all things considered. Since I
started using the VPN a year ago, the bandwidth shaping games have pretty much
stopped. However, lately, I have been catching RST packets being sent from 2
hops upstream from me. That causes the VPN to drop and I have to reconnect.
looks like its time to complain again.

anyway, thats a lot of how and why I use one.

Is it more secure? yes.
is it absolutely secure? not a chance! A very determined hacker will still be
able to break it, but its enormously more difficult. He'll just simply move on
to an easier target.

Re: Jaws very choppy in VMWare fusion

2017-04-09 Thread matthew Dyer
Hi Erric,

I only have this problem when jaws first loads at the login screen in windows
10. I do notes that jaws can be choppy from time to time, but not sure if it
is from vmware or windows itself.

HTH.

suddenly stop, sometimes with a bit of a stutter, and will resume but

Thanks in advance.

Feedly as colomns

2017-04-09 Thread Angus MacKinnon
I have Feedly installed in Safari 10.1 (11603.1.30.0.34) in OS 10.11.6. All I
seem to see is a list of RSS Feed’s and a Follow button. Can I get the RSS Feed
I subscribed to in colomn 1, Headline in Colomn 2 and a Preview in Colomn 3?
For example, BBC World News in colomn 1, The Latest Headline in Colomn 2 and a
Preview in Colomn 3. If so, How? Thank you. Thank you.

Re: VPN questions

2017-04-09 Thread E.T.
Interesting discussion. Much food for thought. I will study the VPN
site you suggested.

One thing you mentioned to Jonathan was that you disabled SSID in
your router. How does that affect your Wifi network. Can your devices
still see the network? I certainly would not mind hiding from the neighbors.

not a problem. there are other reasons to use a VPN. However, 2 things I
do when using google:
1. I am not signed in
2. I always use a VPN when searching.

Also, of late, I have been having some trust issues with my current ISP.
It seems that they sent me a notice of copyright infringement about a
shared file. only problem, I was not sharing anything. So, I had to do a
full blown security audit of my machines and network. I did, eventually,
found where the issue was (the Lingsys router I have here had a security
vulnerability that couldn't be easily closed. As a result, one of my
neighbors was using it to share files. so, even though I had the thing
password protected, it was still using a number of items that made
breaking the password trivially easy with the right software. I finally
managed to get a handle on the situation by turning off the PIN the
device had, turning off SSID broadcast and engaging MAC filtering. I
still can't completely trust the device, so I use a VPN pretty much all
the time now.

I am looking to upgrade the hardware though. A kit from Routerboard that
I can install an image of OpenBSD on would make things a lot better
here. THere are optional add-ons like WiFi B/G/A/N, a bridged set of LAN
ports, an all weather housing, etc. Once that is done and installed, I
can install the VPN package for OpenBSD on there, set it up to handle
that and not worry too much. Then, if I want to be ultra secure, I would
continue to use a VPN tunnel from my machine, thus doubling the protection.

Now, as to why I would want to use a VPN for other than just security?
It's simple. there are some programs hosted on the web that might be
regionally restricted (like sports events). So, I would want to be able
to listen legally and not be caught up in a blackout zone. Thus, VPN
allows me to place my end point elsewhere (like NYC, Sanfransisco,
Detroit, Dallas, or even a foreign country). A VPN also gets around what
my ISP does when I am viewing something like Hulu or Netflix (they try
to lower the QoS for video streaming on content that directly competes
with their cable programming). With a VPN, they can't see the type of
traffic, so they can't change its priority. They have yet to start doing
so on encrypted tunnels. Besides, I am paying for a specific level of
service and I hate it when the ISP decides that my traffic needs to be
shaped. I don't have video here, so I expect full service. btw, I have
already filed a number of complaints over this issue with both the FCC
and the FTC. each time, my service gets maxed out for a few months and
then they start the games again.

Now, I am paying for 50 megabit/second service here and when the VPN is
active, I can still get 40 through. Thats not bad, all things
considered. Since I started using the VPN a year ago, the bandwidth
shaping games have pretty much stopped. However, lately, I have been
catching RST packets being sent from 2 hops upstream from me. That
causes the VPN to drop and I have to reconnect. looks like its time to
complain again.

anyway, thats a lot of how and why I use one.

Is it more secure? yes.
is it absolutely secure? not a chance! A very determined hacker will
still be able to break it, but its enormously more difficult. He'll just
simply move on to an easier target.

Re: VPN questions

So if you hide from your neighbors then your router can’t avoid your networks
around you’s interference nearly as effectively.

If everybody is broadcasting then there are scheduling systems that kick in
that avoid collisions. If every body isn’t then you’ll slam in to their network
traffic and it can degrade performance.

Re: VPN questions

2017-04-09 Thread Scott Granados
Ok, so you don’t have to go that nuts to secure your WiFi but you’ve found
something that’s very important to point out. Dollars to Donuts I’m betting
you had WPS (WiFi Protected Setup) enabled. What this does is provides a
mechanism for machines to join your network either by each end simultaneously
pressing a button or by the far end client entering a numeric pin. This
reduces the requirement to join your. Network from guessing a complex key or
phrase to guessing 6 digits which is far far easier. What you should
definitely do is unless you use this feature you should disable it immediately.
Mac Filtering is ok but if I have your key I can still listen to your network
and glean data. SSId hiding is bogus and counter productive. First, with the
same software whether you broadcast your SSID or not makes no difference
because I can still pull the hidden SSID information right out of the air.
Secondly, when your hiding your SSID you’re not broadcasting your availability
and thus your breaking congestion avoidance mechanisms. You should broadcast
your SSID as not broadcasting gains 0 security and adds more issues than it’s
worth. The Mac filtering is a good idea but the most important is turn off
that WPS feature.

Are you using an SSD or rotating disk? Also, how many cores do you have and
how many cores and memory do you have dedicated to the VM? Most people don’t

2017-04-09 Thread Scott Granados
How much memory?

This sounds like a good config so far. I asked Eric because usually when I
check these people have 1 core dedicated with 512 megs of memory. Clearly
you’re a more power user than that and have more experience.

SSD is also a good thing to check off that you’ve done. I get 0 chop with 4
cores, SSD and 4 GB of assigned memory.

I’m also using eloquence for the speech engine. Both win 7 and 10 perform well.

Make sure you’ve upgraded the hardware drivers for VM fusion as well for each
VM.

2017-04-09 Thread Eric Brinkman
I have 16 gigs of RAM and have dedicated 12 to the virtual machine. I
previously only had eight allocated to the VM but thought allocating more might
fix this. Clearly it's not an allocation issue. How do I go about updating the
drivers? Might this problem have to do with me having upgraded from Windows 7
to Windows 10 within the VM? Once I did that, I edited the settings in fusion
setting my machine from Windows 7 to Windows 10. I am tempted to just back up
my Mac, wipe it, then start from scratch but I am trying to avoid doing that.

suddenly stop, sometimes with a bit of a stutter, and will resume but

Re: Jaws very choppy in VMWare fusion

2017-04-09 Thread Scott Granados
You can look at the application settings I believe it is which gives you the
option to upgrade the VM. It will tell you whether it’s necessary or not.

Another thing to try is uninstalling vmtools and reinstalling since that’s
where the video intercept and other support takes place.

Honestly though, something sounds out of place because you should not have chop
with this configuration.

Another thing to do is run the reclaim space option so it packs up your VM file
and compacts it for more efficiency.

Honestly though, I’m not sure your problem because it sounds like it should be
working very well with the configurations you’re using.

well, when I turned off SSID broadcast, it was a little harder to get new

Re: VPN questions

2017-04-09 Thread Scott Granados
That’s not my point though. My point is even with out putting in your
particulars I can still pull that information out of the air with out having to
enter anything. The SSID is also used for avoiding interference. The networks
are really indicated with their MAC addresses so your access point broadcasts
it’s MAC address as part of the packet. That’s present no matter what.

I guess what I’m saying is not broadcasting the SSID has no security value at
all and has the effect of causing additional congestion. Unless of course
you’re out in a rural area with very few networks.

Over all, turn of that WPS if it’s enabled, the Mac filtering is a good policy
but turn that SSID back on so you and your neighbor’s routers play nice. With
the changes I suggest and if you’re using WPA2PSK with a good key you’ll be
very secure.

Chris,

I kno this is late but what I can say is that Outlook is a lot better on the
IOS platform than it is on the Mac OS platform,

I still think Mail is better on the OSX side.

No worries,
I installed Outlook 2016 on my iPhone as well and was very pleasantly surprised
on how accessible it is. I was thinking of installing it on the mac but before
I did, I wanted to hear others experiences. (smile)

However, I have outlook 2016 on my IPhone and, do find it a lot easier to
use then the apple mail app.

I find that it conveniently separates mailing list messages from messages
addressed directly to me, and it does so automatically. The notifications it
creates on the lock screen are also useful. I think Microsoft Outlook for iOS
demonstrates that programmers in Redmond have been paying attention to
accessibility.

I have it installed on the Mac as well, but I haven't had enough experience
with that version to comment. Basic accessibility is present, but I don't know
how good it is or what limitations may exist.

One thing is Outlook 2016 is integrated with the Skype for business package so
you can see if co-workers are currently on-line without going to a separate
application. I do prefer the menus in Outlook for Mac over just using the
ribbon on my Windows side. At the office though, I tend to read via threading
using Apple Mail and general reading / responding using Outlook for Macintosh,
unless I am running a corporate copy of Windows in a VM, in which case I still
use Outlook for Windows.

My current frustrations with Outlook on Macintosh are as follows:
1. When multiple messages are selected, instead of saying 6 messages or 6 rows
selected it will say 36 cells selected.
2. The auto-expand / contraction of threads when reading by thread gets very
confusing. This can be disabled in options though.

The viewing of contact cards in Outlook for the Macintosh is much better than
what happens on the PC side.

Observations above are on a corporate Macintosh connected to an Exchange server
running Office 2016 on the Macintosh and Outlook 2013 on the Windows side.

Best wishes,

Jonathan

Hi,

RE: Outlook 2016 or Apple mail

2017-04-09 Thread Simon Fogarty
Hi Donna,

I have to admit I’m more a windows user than a mac user,
But the times I have tried to use word 2016 on the mac,
I’ve found it more of an issue than the windows version,
Part of this I think is familiarity of the product,
But my question would be why do you have to use word when pages can do pretty
much the same thing now days?

As for windows on your mac,
you need to go with what is going to work for you the best.
Office 2016 needs jaws 18 where as vo will work with office 2016 on the mac.
Probably not that helpful but I think for most usage you’d be fine with office
for the mac

Hi John,

Cheers,
Donna

Donna,

I have certainly used Word 2016 on the Macintosh with no major issues. I have
not tried anything complex however. Office 2016 has both Macintosh style menus
and also a ribbon, I believe there are more options embedded in the ribbon,
though the ribbon is not as keyboard interactive as it is on Windows. You have
to interact with the ribbon, select the category from the top row, then move
down and interact one more time to get to all the controls there. I expect that
one could use the item chooser in two quickly get to a ribbon item, but I have
only tried that in Outlook where even in my 2016 15 inch Mac Book Pro I escape
out of the item chooser before it brings up a list of items because it is too
slow.. (500 messages in inbox)

Hi all,

On a related note, can anyone give me the current status of Office,
specifically Word, on the Mac? I'm looking at some contract work that would
require me to use Word, so trying to figure out whether to do it on a PC, or
whether I could just use my Mac.

MY fault. I should have looked at the group I was responding too.
