Thanks for replying but I don't see column browser as an option. Could that be
because I am not running the most recent version of iTunes?

Hi Kimber. What version of iTunes are you running now? just wondering! Hav e
you tried VO space bar on MOre button , which takes you to your artist,
album, songs menus? I have not try this, but maybe you can do VO shift M for
options that will help you how to change settings in order to have your
artists names? Hope this helps! I look forward in hearing from you soon. Thanks

I've got an airport express from a couple of years ago.

I've been wondering for a while if there is an airport express with wifi AC or
if they are still limited to N.

For those of you packing AirPort 802.11 n or AC base stations from Apple
(Express, Extreme, Time Capsule), there are new updates for you: 7.6.7 for n
and 7.7.7 for AC. The fixes are mostly in the name of performance and
stability rather than anything groundbreaking, but I’d definitely suggest you
update.

You can update from iOS or OS X using AirPort Utility, as usual. If you’ve
configured it to open when alerts occur, then AirPort Utility for Mac may
already have opened up, as was my case. Then use the Update button on Mac or
confirm the prompts to update on iOS after choosing your base station and then
Version.

PS: Why are router utilities crap unless Apple does it? :)

RE: Wiping the Hard drive clean in a 2011 Mac computer

2016-05-26 Thread Simon Fogarty
Helga,

 Just a note to this,

In disk utility you will see a couple of different options of disks,
The top of the list should be the actual hard disk,
The next possibly named Macintosh HD, or if never named it might be unknown,

And the third of the disks in the utility list is one you "DO NOT" eraise!

The bottom of the list is the recovery partition, if you wipe this while in
recovery mode you wont go much further with your reinstall.

You shoul d only eraise the middle option of the disk list, it should be as I
said something like Macintosh HD,although you can name the HD anything now days.

Highlight this and then go to the eraise tab and find the eraise button and
click it then confirm and once that is done, go back to the list of utilities
which you can do by closing disk utility and find the install OSX and it will
use your wifi connection to install the version of OSX from the apple website

 Hope that helps.

Hi Helga, Your friend would want to boot into recovery mode. Just hold down
command+r on boot-up. I usually hold it down, wait until you hear the boot
tone, and then count to like 30 before releasing the keys.
After that wait like 2 minutes and then hit command+f5 to get VO up.
You'll find yourself in a table one of which is disc utility. Select disc
utility, select your macintosh hd and click on erase. Make sure the options are
HFS+ journaled and hit erase. After that close disc utility which will bring
you back to the table of options. Next select reinstall mac OSX. And you'll be
all set Hope this helps! Jeff

Well, it looks from reports like many of the changes were overdue bug fixes: an
issue with DHCPv6 and Cox, and an issue with clients being separated from one
another which broke AirPlay. Not sure how it took this long, but glad it’s
done. I’m not buying Google’s product; I like the Apple solution. On the
other hand, maybe it took so long because a new one is due out soon after a
long period of disinterest by Apple. Sometimes it happens like that.

Re: AirPort Firmware 7.6.7/7.7.7 Released

2016-05-26 Thread Caitlyn Furness
all went well here with the firmware update.

I’ve had that issue with airplay breaking during use, so I hope this is fixed.
Granted, it didn’t happen that often, but it was usually at a really good part
of the movie!! lol

4th Generation Apple TV.

2016-05-26 Thread Michelle's Home Emails
Hi Chris and all,

Michelle here,

The reason I asked if the Apple TV can have BRAILLE, I am now totally blind,
and have a substantial hearing loss. I thought having Braille on the Apple TV
would open up to for many Deafblind folks.

Though I can hear the tv with headphones, my hearing aid on max and my speech
processor on map 4. Reading subtitles would fill in the gaps I miss.

Just a thought.

Do you have bluetooth turned on on both devices?
How old is your mac.
Airdrop between iphone and mac is not supported by macs newer than 2012 unless

Thanks for this useful tricks. I am a heavy video editor as well, and I’ve

Creating Quick Events

2016-05-26 Thread Traci Duncan
Hi all, a couple Mac Calendar questions…

When creating quick events, is it possible to add alert times inside the quick
event edit field?

Can we create events that happen 2 days in a row? Say you have a meeting
Tuesday and Wednesday at 7PM. I couldn’t figure out how to write that in quick
events.

Also, can we only go so far into the future? I was trying to create an event
for next March, but calendar kept defaulting to March 2016. It worked fine for
creating an event for next January. Any thoughts there?

Thank you,
Traci

Re: Creating Quick Events

2016-05-26 Thread Tim Kilburn
Hi,

I believe that the alerts need to be set within the event details and thus are
not configurable from the Quick Event edit field. Similarly, if you wish to
have the event repeat such as you've suggested, it would also need to be set in
the event details. Regarding the far in the future events, as far as I know,
as long as you put the year into your Quick Event field, you should be able to
enter it for next March without issue. At least it worked for me. If you need
help with the Event details window., let me know.

Re: 4th Generation Apple TV.

2016-05-26 Thread Scott Granados
I would suggest writing accessibility at apple.com and suggesting they add
braille support to TVOS. Since bluetooth support is already there it should be
theoretically possible. Would be nice and maybe the group needs reminding
there are deaf blind users out there who would benefit. Hell, as someone who
grew up around way to much loud music I wouldn’t mind having the captions
available via braille.:)

2016-05-26 Thread Scott Granados
You can get a Dlink dumb unmanaged Gig switch for $30 or so.

Or you can do what I did, I used a Cisco 6509 with a 3BXL sup engine for a
while. It also made a good coffee table although it was way to loud. I’ve got
some Juniper EX switches now. Not nearly as cool looking but way way more
manageable.

2016-05-26 Thread Scott Granados
Simon, you don’t get that much more than 100 over N. You can but it’s not the
raw data rate either. Also, what’s your uplink speed to the network. You’re
in a pretty advanced part of the world I bet so it may be more than 100. Good
to clear the choke points but that might not be your biggest one.

Re: Google's Eric Schmidt uses an iPhone as his primary device, not android

2016-05-26 Thread Scott Granados
My objection is not with him using the phone, I hope he uses the competitions
device so you know how you stand. My objection was the weak argument he gave
for his device, the fact he’s not using a Google device but a 3rd party vendor
and the fact the iPhone is his primary the message he’s sending to me is not
only is google hardware not good enough but neither is android.

About flaming time, indeed.

Sadly it also made using it a little less efficient; you’ll notice that there
are now groupings around the table views.

Ah well, can’t have everything. And I’m now quite used to these little

Re: Google's Eric Schmidt uses an iPhone as his primary device, not android

2016-05-26 Thread Sabahattin Gucukoglu
Of course, it just makes sense. Apple shareholders are in it for the money and
would rather use PCs and Android to keep the costs down and specs up while
raking it in, while Alphabet’s top executive is using an iPhone because the
entire Android ecosystem is completely unsustainable in spite of the clear
dominant market advantage. It’s the perfect balance. :)

And Samsung are totally lousy at updates. There is that, I imagine.

Still, great to see the Android apologists trying to spin this one for all it’s
worth. It’s a good laugh.

Using SSH to find a computer

2016-05-26 Thread Angus MacKinnon
I think I am missing something. I learned that a person can use SSH commands in
Terminal. I have opened a terminal Window on my OS 10.11.5 iMac. After
Googleing SSH commands, I am still lost on how to use SSh to find the IP
Address of a computer that is plugged into my switch using ethernet. How do I
find the Ip Address of a computer Using SSH? And where do I find a screen
Reader friendly list of SSH commands. Thank you.

Re: Using SSH to find a computer

2016-05-26 Thread Alex Hall
I don't think you do. SSH requires that you already know the IP you're trying
to talk to. Once you're in, there's not really screen reader friendly or not,
because everything happens in the terminal. There are no graphics, no apps that
aren't also driven by text commands, nothing but terminal commands. Once you
SSH in, you're using the environment on the remote machine. For instance, if I
SSH into a Linux box on Windows, I'm using Bash commands, because Bash is
running on Linux. Windows doesn't have it, but my remote Linux machine does,
and that's all that matters. it's like remote control, but driven solely by the
command line.

Re: Pptp or vpn.

2016-05-26 Thread Sabahattin Gucukoglu
As a TV-licence-fee payer, I suppose I should be glad you all appreciate BBC
content so much, but also rather resentful at the idea that you’re getting all
this lovely content for free while I have to fork out actual cash for it, you
swine! :)

Geoblocking is utterly braindead, and every effort to undermine it can and
should be heartily encouraged. So, go ahead. I just hope the Beeb don’t get
around to authenticating each and every viewer, or that your VPN provider of
choice isn’t blocked, as they seem damned determine to pitch in with their
content licensers at the expense of all and sundry, including the fee-payer.

Mind you though, it’s a pretty big imbalance. Netflix content availability is
crap here in the UK, and the VPN crackdown is well and truly in force. Even
using an IPv6 tunnel broker no longer works—more’s the pity. :)

Re: Using SSH to find a computer

2016-05-26 Thread Sabahattin Gucukoglu
You won’t use SSH for discovery of that kind, although you can certainly use
SSH to connect to a discovered machine.

Is this other box iOS or OS X? Just use .local, where is the
short hostname of that host. You can set the short name in System Preferences,
Sharing, Edit. It will find the IP address automatically using Bonjour. I do
this all the time; very handy.

Select the fields you want to format. Then, go to the formatter and press the
cells radio button. Then in the scroll area you will find the data type pop up
button and some other related field such as how many decimal points for numbers

Re: Using SSH to find a computer

2016-05-26 Thread 'Chris Blouch' via MacVisionaries
Terminal on osx opens up a full bash environment where you can run
commands, write scripts and other things all through text. Apple has
some nice documentation here:

https://developer.apple.com/library/mac/documentation/OpenSource/Conceptual/ShellScripting/Introduction/Introduction.html

So from Terminal you would usually execute an ssh command to securely
connect to another box and type commands there. Usually you'll do either
ssh to some IP address, some DNS name which gets resolved for you into
an IP address, or, as was previously mentioned, some Bonjour name which
also gets resolved for you to an IP address. SSH replaces telnet on
modern systems where telnet was not secure and sent all text "in the
clear" between your machine and the remote host.

Re: AirPort Firmware 7.6.7/7.7.7 Released

2016-05-26 Thread Tim Kilburn
Hi,

Is your Express the only AP in your place? If so, then unless you have some
huge pipe out to the world from your ISP, then that 100 MB connection should be
fine. The AC and N connections that give you up to 1 GB connection are
primarily for internal data transfer between devices on the internal network.
As mentioned, your likely choke point is the pipe out to the Internet itself.

Hello Don,

Go to VoiceOver Utility (VO-F8). In the Verbosity category, select Hints, then
uncheck the Speak instructions for using the item in the VoiceOver cursor
checkbox.
Should you want the hint for an item, press VO-Shift-n.

Cheers,

Re: Deleting an Item from the Safari "Favorites" List

2016-05-26 Thread Craig Werner
I should have asked how I can delete a "Favorites" item using the
fewest keystrokes. The only way I have found to delete an item is to
open Safari, interact with the Sidebar, make sure the "Bookmarks"
radio button is selected, interact with the "Bookmarks" scroll area,
and interact with the "Bookmarks" table. I can then press "Delete"
after arrowing to the unwanted item. Surely, there must be a more
efficient way of doing this.
