Terminal on osx opens up a full bash environment where you can run
commands, write scripts and other things all through text. Apple has
some nice documentation here:
https://developer.apple.com/library/mac/documentation/OpenSource/Conceptual/ShellScripting/Introduction/Introduction.html
So from Terminal you would usually execute an ssh command to securely
connect to another box and type commands there. Usually you'll do either
ssh to some IP address, some DNS name which gets resolved for you into
an IP address, or, as was previously mentioned, some Bonjour name which
also gets resolved for you to an IP address. SSH replaces telnet on
modern systems where telnet was not secure and sent all text "in the
clear" between your machine and the remote host.

In the future I was planning in the future getting a Raspberry Pi. Before I do,
I was thinking of beefing up my SSH and/or bash andd/or linux before I do. I am
rusty on all of the previous.
I use a iMac with OS 10.11.5 and have an older Mac with OS 10.8.2.
