Hi all
Discovered something awesome on the Mac tonight. Want to copy an address, write
a new email, add a sender to contacts etc? No problem! Here's how to do it:

1. In Mail, open a message or interact with the message content scroll area.

2. Interact with the message headers group.

3. Find the contact of interest using VO-arrow keys, then VO-space to activate.
A nice little menu with options such as copy address and add to contacts should
appear.

To me, this reminds me a lot like Thunderbird on Windows where you can right
click a contact and a similar menu appears.

Let me know your thoughts.

It worked like a charm for me. One thing to remember is that the username you
need isn't the one you use to sign into Facebook, it's the one they assign you.
To see it, open FB, click on your Profile, then look at the URL. The username
you need will be in the URL as Tim describes. Good luck!

It's actually command! left and right arrow, not just left and right arrow
by themselves. Then, if you wanna rewind or fast forward, that's
command+option+left and right arrows. command+option+down arrow is mute,
then if you want to unute, just raise your volume with command+up arrow
 until the desired level.

Re: Can someone explain how to add Facebook to Messages

2015-06-29 Thread Donna Goodin
Hi George,

So, I don't really understand this all that well, but here goes.

FB, for whatever reason, assigns you a username, that is separate from the one
you use to sign in. If it's like mine, it will be a name followed by a number,
something like this: John.Smith.23. That is apparently the one that Messenger
needs. tim Said you can view this on your FB login page, but I was not able to
do that. So I logged in to Facebook, clicked on Profile, then navigated over
to the address bar. The username you need will be part of that URL. You then
put that, in the username field. So using my example, it would look like
john.smith...@chat.facebook.com . The
password is the same one you use to log in to FB

Also, don't forget that before you do any of this, you have to add Facebook as
an account in System Prefs under Internet accounts.

Hope this helps.
Take care,
Donna

The easiest thing is probably a USB sound card. They can get quite small, and
should work well enough. Are you certain the jack has died, though, and not
just been muted? Remember that audio levels for speakers will be different from
headphones, so it's possible for the internal speakers to work but for the
headphones to not be making noise at all.

update and correction to earlier messages re Workout on Apple Watch

2015-06-29 Thread Donna Goodin
Hi all,

As some of you may recall, I posted earlier that the watch gives you no alert
when you've met your work-out goal. This is incorrect. However, there is a
voiceover bug that incorrectly reports the time you have entered.

If you notice, when you've selected the type of work-out you want and go to set
the time, Voiceover defaults to a time, and you'll hear something like "thirty
seconds." Well, it's actually not 30 seconds, it's 30 minutes. So, when I was
turning the crown until Voiceover spoke the time as 30 minutes, what I was
actually setting my work-out time to was 30 hours. lol, no wonder I didn't get
an alert, I would have had to work out for 15 hours just to get to the halfway
point. So treat seconds as minutes, and then set the time you want, and you
will in fact get an alert at the halfway point, and then again when your
work-out is completed. I'm going to report this to Apple Accessibility, so
hopefully they can get it straightened out.

I hope this is helpful.
Cheers,
Donna

haptic feedback on Watch for timer

2015-06-29 Thread Jenine Stanley
My Watch seems to have lost track of the haptic feedback for the timer. It now
just gives the audible alarm with no tap or buzz.

I’m thinking I just need to un-pair and re-pair the Watch as some other things
are getting a bit off track as well.

Has anyone had this happen? Right now it’s not a frustration but when I was in
the gym and couldn’t really hear the alarm well, and was on an arm bike, that
haptic really helped know when my workout time was up.

Clean install of Yosemite with VoiceOver

2015-06-29 Thread Andrew Lamanche
Hi,

I have just had to start reinstalling Yosemite on my macbook air. I've started
from the recovery partition by erasing my hard drive and then pressed
reinstall. Apple verified my computer and I pressed the agree button in the
dialog that appeared. And then I couldn't hear anything. There's no speech.
Does this mean that the reinstallation is proceeding? Should I have speech
with it or do I have to wait until the download completes and reinstallation
starts? Is this normal? Please reassure me, I'm panicking a bit.

Many thanks,

Andrew

Re: haptic feedback on Watch for timer

2015-06-29 Thread Tyler Thompson
I recently had my haptic feedback stop for all notifications, alarms and even
siri. It seems that going into settings and turning on prominent haptic, then
holding the button and powering off the watch, giving it a few seconds and
powering it back on solved my issues.

Re: haptic feedback on Watch for timer

2015-06-29 Thread Brent Harding
No, haven't had that happen, but for incoming phone calls, I get no
notification of any kind that the phone is ringing. It doesn't make a
difference if my phone is held right next to the watch or across the room.
One time it worked, if I turned it to face the phone, but would quit ringing
if I turned just a bit.

Subject: haptic feedback on Watch for timer

My Watch seems to have lost track of the haptic feedback for the timer. It
now just gives the audible alarm with no tap or buzz.

I’m thinking I just need to un-pair and re-pair the Watch as some other
things are getting a bit off track as well.

Has anyone had this happen? Right now it’s not a frustration but when I was
in the gym and couldn’t really hear the alarm well, and was on an arm bike,
that haptic really helped know when my workout time was up.

Try cmd-f5. Even if the installer is proceeding, assuming the Mac isn't
restarting or something, you should get speech. It might be that VO is actually
on and you'll turn it off; in that case, just press cmd-f5 again.

Re: Clean install of Yosemite with VoiceOver

2015-06-29 Thread Andrew Lamanche
Hi Alex,

Thanks for responding. I've been trying command+f5 repeatedly and no luck. A
sighted person tells me when I press command+f5 that he can see Voiceover on
and off on the screen but I have no speech. It's curious. With sighted help
I'm downloading Yosemite as we speak but I'm still disconcerted why I lost
speech. Hopefully once the process starts I will get voiceover back.

What about trying to turn up your system volume? The commands are F12 to
increase, and F11 to decrease. You may need to hold down the function key as
you execute these commands.

Recommendations for good ToDo app for iOS

2015-06-29 Thread Jenine Stanley
I’m looking for recommendations for a good ToDo app that will allow me to list
things and be reminded on a regular basis, more than once a day, to actually do
them. Then an easy way to delete or move the task to a Done list.

does this make sense?

Curious to see what you all use. I’d like this mainly for iOS but a Mac version
would also be helpful.

Haptic feedback failing

2015-06-29 Thread Jenine Stanley
Thanks for the thought on the haptic feedback. Mine has gone on and off
periodically and today after reading your messages, I tried setting an alarm
both with Siri and manually. Both of course featured a perfect haptic feedback
along with the alarm sound. This is sort of how my Watch is behaving now,
little things stop then start again. No giant deal really

Yes, turning it off and on again does seem to help and pairing it again every
now and then does too.

Oh, first gen products. I do wonder how on earth I lived without it though.

But they were all fixed by doing a restore on the phone from my Icloud
backup and completely resetting the watch to factory defaults. I was
sad to lose my data but the performance improvements have been
remarkable. It didn't take long to do either one but I hope I don't
have to do it again. Everything just hums or haptics along though now.

I can't find the app. Are you sure of the spelling?
I used to use fantastical which is a calendar and reminders app but reliable
voiceover accessibility broke in a big way so I had to quit it. It was a

Re: Clean install of Yosemite with VoiceOver

2015-06-29 Thread Andrew Lamanche
Listers,

Thanks to all for your responses on my trouble with Yosemite clean install. In
the end, I had to ask sighted assistance since Voiceover would sometimes speak
during the installation and then it would disappear again. The machine I was
doing the clean install is late 2010 macbook air but I can't see why it would
matter. It is truly bizarre when so many of you have achieved clean install
with voiceover, and here I was having to work with a pair of eyes to do so.
Once installed, I have voiceover as normal but I am just curious and somewhat
disappointed and worried in case I should have to do the clean install again.

Thanks a lot for all your suggestions.
