Re: Watch Screen Responsiveness with VoiceOver

2015-06-28 Thread Nicholas Parsons
Thanks, all, for the feedback. I had heard that the IPX7 water resistant rating
meant it could be submerged in water up to a depth of 1m for up to 30 mins. The
Apple Store staff member who helped me try on the watch said they don’t
recommend waring it in the shower, but then I read that Tim Cook wears his in
the shower. But then again I suppose Tim Cook doesn’t need to worry about
needing to buy a new one if anything happens to his while wearing it in the
shower. One other issue, I suppose, with waring it in the shower is if soap
gets into it. Maybe it can handle water but I don’t know about soap.

Anyway, I took it to the Genius Bar today. They did some diagnostic testing and
said there seemed to be a software issue. AS the Watch is such a new product,
further testing would require them sending it off site, possibly taking up to
one week. I don’t really want to be without my watch for a week, so at the
Genius’s suggestion I’m just going to try resetting the Watch settings and
then the iPhone settings. Before doing that I might just try restarting the
Watch regularly as you all are suggesting.

So it seems others aren’t having any issues with the Watch activating on
wrist-raise even with speak on wrist-raise turned off, is that right? Can any
others of you confirm that?

Re: watch apps

2015-06-28 Thread Nicholas Parsons
TripView is used for getting timetables for public transport. It updates in
real time with delays and changes etc. It can use your location to show you the
next train, bus, ferry etc departing from the nearest stop to you. So for
instance, I have it set up so that I just swipe up from my clock face on my
watch and I can see when my next train is departing and from which platform. I
have it set up so it only shows me the trains I actually want to catch. I don’t
know about Brisbane but I don’t see why not. The app does pull data from the
iPHone but there is rarely any noticeable lag or whatever. It works really well.

Complications are the customisable little bits of information displayed on your
clock face. These include things like weather, time, calendar appointments,
activity, date etc; I don’t think there are any specifically for heart rate.
There is a “glance” for heart rate, though, but glances are something slightly
different. Glances are a whole screen of information, including from third
party apps, which you get to by swiping up from the clock face.

Re: Hourly Precipitation on the Watch

2015-06-28 Thread Nicholas Parsons
Just a follow up on this one. The weather app now seems far more accessible to
me with VoiceOver on the Watch. Each hour is an item which VoiceOver focus can
flick to, just as on the phone. This is whether viewing it in the weather app
or by Siri. Odd, as I’m running the same Watch OS as before. There doesn’t seem
to have been a software update, yet it seems to have improved. On this last
point, I’ve also noticed that Siri no longer asks me to confirm a reminder. She
just says she’ll remind me, and there’s a button to remove the reminder if I
want. This is much better as most of the time she gets it right anyway and
confirming just becomes an unnecessary extra step. But interesting that this
seems to have come about without an OS update.

This is not necessarily a new feature. It was available in earlier versions of
OS before it was broken in Maverick, if I can remember correctly. So this is
not new, but it looks like it has been repaired thanks to many of us
complaining, if I remember well.

in point of fact and for what it’s worth, you could still achieve this

Glances in Apple Watch

2015-06-28 Thread 'Graham' via MacVisionaries
Hi,

Sorry if this has already been covered before.
Yesterday I bit the bullet and bought the Apple Watch 38mm edition. So far I’m
really enjoying it.
However there is a small issue I’m encountering which could be me an inherent
fault or Vo problem.
When I go to glances, when I do the two finger swipe left or right gesture it
very rarely works. I can get round this by doing the one finger swipe up or
down to next or previous glance so its not a game changer.
Just wondered has anyone else come across this problem?
Fyi, I have updated the watch to the latest IOS version 1.1 via my iPhone.

Thanks for any help or advice received.

Warm regards

Graham

Re: Watch Screen Responsiveness with VoiceOver

2015-06-28 Thread Jenine Stanley
I occasionally have an issue where Siri won’t activate on wrist raise and I
have speak with wrist raise off. It works most of the time but you have to wait
like 2 seconds after you raise your wrist to call on Siri, it’s not immediate.
Of course this morning when I’m trying it,it won’t work unless I’ve tapped the
watch face to wake it up so you may be on to something but my Watch needs to be
paired again to fix some issues. You may try unpinning it and pairing it again.
that seems to help here.

RE: Glances in Apple Watch

2015-06-28 Thread george b
I have the same issue trying to do any kind of 2 finger swipe. I have big
fingers and can not get them apart far enough on the small screen to have v o
recognize them as a 2 finger swipe.

Subject: Glances in Apple Watch

Graham

Re: Glances in Apple Watch

2015-06-28 Thread Jenine Stanley
Hi,

I had the most trouble with this when first using my Watch too. Let me see if I
can explain how I finally dealt with it.

I assumed that like the phone, to do the 2-finger swipe right and left, you
placed your fingers horizontally on the screen with your hands perpendicular to
each other. Your swiping hand, which in my case is my right hand, is facing the
Watch and going the same direction as the band.

I have a 38mm Watch and I don’t have large fingertips. they aren’t dainty
either and no long nails to worry about.

The swipe gesture didn’t work though.

I found that in order to swipe, I had to put my fingers on the Watch
vertically. I put my right hand on top of my left hand, right hand fingers
facing my elbow and swipe toward and away from my elbow to get the desired
result. Works almost every time. You do have to swipe straight which is
another issue. I found I was accidentally angling my fingers no matter how I
swiped.

the vertical swipe though seems to work better than the horizontal way.

As always though your mileage may vary.

Can someone explain how to add Facebook to Messages

2015-06-28 Thread Donna Goodin
Good morning, all,

I've been trying to figure out how to get my FB account connected to Messages.
I have it set up in Internet Accounts, but the only apps affiliated with it are
Calendar and Contacts, and I don't see a way to add Messages. So I went into
Messages, but FB is not one of the new account options, even under Other
Account Type. any help would be much appreciated.
Cheers,
Donna

Re: Can someone explain how to add Facebook to Messages

2015-06-28 Thread Tim Kilburn
Hi,

Posted from the earlier discussions on this list with a few clarifications:

Open the Messages app on the Mac if you haven’t done so yet

Pull down the “Messages” menu and choose “Add Account…”

>From the message account screen, choose “Other messages account…” and click on
>“Continue”

Pull down the menu next to “Account Type” and select ‘Jabber’ from the list
In “Account Name” enter your Facebook account user name as follows:

yourusern...@chat.facebook.com (the Facebook username is whatever your Facebook
profile URL is, for example: if you're logged into FaceBook on your Mac, go up
to the Address field and it should read, "www.facebook.com/your_username’
therefore, the username would be “your_usern...@chat.facebook.com” and the
account name would then be your_usern...@chat.facebook.com)
Enter your Facebook account password in the password field, this is the same
one you use to login to Facebook from the web or the apps

Ignore all other settings and choose “Create” – this will setup Facebook
messaging client and in a moment you’ll see your Facebook Friends list populate
as a buddy list, complete with friend names and friend profile pictures

Message anyone in the list as usual, the conversations are going through
Facebook Messenger

You can access the Facebook Friends buddy list at any time from the “Windows”
menu item in Messages app, where you can also set your status to be online or
offline, or away.

HTH

Later...

I had to turn wrist raise off as Voice Over keeps speaking.

Of course this morning when I’m trying it,it won’t work unless I’ve tapped the
watch face to wake it up so you may be on to something but my Watch needs to be
paired again to fix some issues. You may try unpinning it and pairing it again.
that seems to help here.

This afternoon I have tried sending text messages on my new Apple Watch. For
some reason each time I get an error message to say that the message text

Using the same contact information on my iPhone works every time.
Has anyone any ideas?

Kind regards

Command-option-r boots into Internet Recovery which is not useful unless you
either have sighted assistance to connect to your wifi network or you connect
via ethernet. Command-r is what you want to boot into the recovery partition

Safari and Command tab vs VoiceOver

2015-06-28 Thread Bill Holton
Does anyone else have this problem. I can Command tab quickly between any
and all apps, go into an app, such as iTunes, then command tab away and to
the next app quickly.until I reach Safari. Then, even after the page has
completely loaded, I cannot accessibly command tab away from Safari with
speech. Apparently, the apps are changing on the screen, but it is 20-30
seconds before VO start talking again.
Any help/advice appreciated.
Bill

Re: Wiping A Mac Clean and Starting Over

That’s debatable; with a used Mac, I’d probably want to boot into internet
recovery mode just to make sure the Mac went back to factory condition. Of
course, like you say, you can’t do this without some sighted help to get you
started, so it’s not useful in all situations and I’ll admit is probably
overkill.

haven't used iTunes in a while and when I tried to use it today , the left
and right arrows do not go to the next track . Also , when playing an
album it will play a song and than stop without proceeding to the next
track . I hope it is something stupid that I am doing or not doing . I
am having this problem on my mac . My iPhone is working fine.

RE: Wiping A Mac Clean and Starting Over

2015-06-28 Thread Mauricio Molina
At this point, and I do not have sighted assistance at this time, I will say
that I have continued to try using the command+R suggestion to no avail; the
log in/password screen always comes up. I have tried holding this key
combination soon after pressing the start button and even before pressing the
start button without success. I have also used the restart option in the Apple
menu with this key combination with the same results. The version of the os is
10.6.8. I have a Windows keyboard connected and for all functions, the Windows
keyboard has worked as expected. Oh, and I am aware that the "Windows" key acts
as the "command" when using this keyboard. I will wait for sighted assistance
to try the plan B suggested earlier.

Thanks for the suggestions and I will keep all posted of my progress.

RE: Wiping A Mac Clean and Starting Over

2015-06-28 Thread Mauricio Molina
Christopher,

Since I am not sure if you read my original message, please allow me to provide
some original and some new information: This MacBook Pro (MBP) was given to me
so that I could learn to use a Mac using VoiceOver. At the time, the MBP had 3
accounts and I was provided the password for the main account holder. In
learning to use the MBP, I changed the name of the main account holder, added
an email account to MacMail, and have been performing some basic yet essential
tasks. I have been able to learn a lot with this configuration. However, one
thing I cannot do is access the App Store or iTunes because I do not have the
original owner's Apple ID password. Sure, I can ask for this information, but I
have been so appreciative of the gift of the circa 2011 MBP, I do not want to
inconvenience the gifter; passwords are such a personal commodity and I have
always stressed that passwords should not be given out lightly. Additionally, I
am seeking the experience of performing the desired task. So, with all this
information, is "File Vault" something I need to disable? Again, if I must, I
will contact the original owner and ask for their Apple ID password.

Thanks,

Mauricio

As a last resort, if your Mac supports a later OS, you could grab it from the

Re: headphones

2015-06-28 Thread Alex Hall
The easiest thing is probably a USB sound card. They can get quite small, and
should work well enough. Are you certain the jack has died, though, and not
just been muted? Remember that audio levels for speakers will be different from
headphones, so it's possible for the internal speakers to work but for the
headphones to not be making noise at all.

Hi,

Posted from the earlier discussions on this list with a few clarifications:

Open the Messages app on the Mac if you haven’t done so yet

Pull down the “Messages” menu and choose “Add Account…”

>From the message account screen, choose “Other messages account…” and click on
>“Continue”

Pull down the menu next to “Account Type” and select ‘Jabber’ from the list In
“Account Name” enter your Facebook account user name as follows:

yourusern...@chat.facebook.com (the Facebook username is whatever your Facebook
profile URL is, for example: if you're logged into FaceBook on your Mac, go up
to the Address field and it should read, "www.facebook.com/your_username’
therefore, the username would be “your_usern...@chat.facebook.com” and the
account name would then be your_usern...@chat.facebook.com) Enter your Facebook
account password in the password field, this is the same one you use to login
to Facebook from the web or the apps

Ignore all other settings and choose “Create” – this will setup Facebook
messaging client and in a moment you’ll see your Facebook Friends list populate
as a buddy list, complete with friend names and friend profile pictures

Message anyone in the list as usual, the conversations are going through
Facebook Messenger

You can access the Facebook Friends buddy list at any time from the “Windows”
menu item in Messages app, where you can also set your status to be online or
offline, or away.

To see it, open FB, click on your Profile, then look at the URL. The username
you need will be in the URL as Tim describes. Good luck!

Make certain you have interacted with the document area. Sometimes it seems as

The discount is good through the next 30 days. The cost per single user
license is actually $29.99 but, for the next 30 days, one can get it for
$22.99. I will pay also.

Re: Setting up Apple Watch.

2015-06-28 Thread Daniela Rubio
Hi!
What I and many others have done is to turn on the watch holding the “friends”
button (the long one)about 6 seconds, ; and after that, triple tap the digital
crown to get VO working.
Then, go to your Watch app in iphone, and when you start to link a watch and it
asks you to put the watch to the camera, go and press a button that says
something about pairing the watch manually.
When you do so, you need to do the same in the watch and in the watch screen, a
6 digit code will appear. That code is to be entered in the iphone app and
that’s it, the watch will be linked.
After that, your iPhone will start asking you all it needs to set up your
watch, and also VoiceOver will keep on speaking in your watch.
Hope it helps. It is easy once you have it in front, no big deal.
Take care!
