Christopher,

Since I am not sure if you read my original message, please allow me to provide
some original and some new information: This MacBook Pro (MBP) was given to me
so that I could learn to use a Mac using VoiceOver. At the time, the MBP had 3
accounts and I was provided the password for the main account holder. In
learning to use the MBP, I changed the name of the main account holder, added
an email account to MacMail, and have been performing some basic yet essential
tasks. I have been able to learn a lot with this configuration. However, one
thing I cannot do is access the App Store or iTunes because I do not have the
original owner's Apple ID password. Sure, I can ask for this information, but I
have been so appreciative of the gift of the circa 2011 MBP, I do not want to
inconvenience the gifter; passwords are such a personal commodity and I have
always stressed that passwords should not be given out lightly. Additionally, I
am seeking the experience of performing the desired task. So, with all this
information, is "File Vault" something I need to disable? Again, if I must, I
will contact the original owner and ask for their Apple ID password.

Thanks,

Mauricio

Do you have File Vault enabled? This could prevent access to the recovery
partition if you don't know your credentials. It *could* happen.
