At this point, and I do not have sighted assistance at this time, I will say
that I have continued to try using the command+R suggestion to no avail; the
log in/password screen always comes up. I have tried holding this key
combination soon after pressing the start button and even before pressing the
start button without success. I have also used the restart option in the Apple
menu with this key combination with the same results. The version of the os is
10.6.8. I have a Windows keyboard connected and for all functions, the Windows
keyboard has worked as expected. Oh, and I am aware that the "Windows" key acts
as the "command" when using this keyboard. I will wait for sighted assistance
to try the plan B suggested earlier.

Thanks for the suggestions and I will keep all posted of my progress.

Mauricio

That’s debatable; with a used Mac, I’d probably want to boot into internet
recovery mode just to make sure the Mac went back to factory condition. Of
course, like you say, you can’t do this without some sighted help to get you
started, so it’s not useful in all situations and I’ll admit is probably
overkill.

Command-option-r boots into Internet Recovery which is not useful unless you
either have sighted assistance to connect to your wifi network or you connect
via ethernet. Command-r is what you want to boot into the recovery partition
stored on disk.
