some really handy Facebook shortcuts

Hi all,

this week's issue of Flying Blind mentioned an AccessWorld article about FB

I want to post a sincere “Thank You” to Scott for directing me to the DJAY

Hi Anders,

Logic pro is accessible. You can go to the logic VIP google mailing list to get
more information about it.

I’ve tried contacting ableton a few years back to ask to make it accessible,
but I have no idea where it is right now. It would be something of a revolution
if that was indeed accessible.

audio description for HBO Now?

This may be a silly question but I’m enjoying my free month of HBO Now and
would also like to take advantage of any audio description available. I know

One small correction. The shortcuts, where the article says to access with
ctrl+option+whatever, just press ctrl+shortcut key. Ctrl+option+shortcut
doesn't work...it's just ctrl. This definitely makes Facebook somewhat less of

Bill.
Glad it was helpful. This has me reconsidering my now defunked mixing
career. I was quite heavily involved with DJing and electronic music
several years back, before we had all of these options that were
mainly accessible and before I ever used VoiceOver on the Mac. All my
mixing was done on Windows software, but there wasn't the braille
display support I needed to continue working with the software options
I was looking at.

Best of luck,

Converting from pages to office for submission in college classroom

2015-04-16 Thread Pamela Francis
Hi folks,
I'm asking this question in my daughters behalf.
She has had a Mac for the past three years recently purchased a new computer
in order to have access to office in order to submit her schoolwork online to
her respective teachers. My question is twofold Does office for Mac come in
a student edition as does the Microsoft equivalent? If not, does anyone know of
extensions that will allow her to convert her work from pages to word? I may be
a bit late with these questions as she went out to purchase an HP computer for
the sole purpose of gaining access to Microsoft office. Hopefully I can find
the answers for her in order that she can ultimately take it back, allowing her
to use the copy of pages she has to continue her schoolwork. Accessibility is

Re: Navigating safari in iOS.

2015-04-16 Thread Tim Kilburn
Hi,

For #1, down in the lower right of the Safari screen is a button labelled
Pages, activate that then you will have all the open pages listed for you.
There is a close button connected with each.Regarding all the FaceBook
questions, I find the FaceBook app much easier to navigate than doing it on the
web, so can’t really answer those questions other than to say that you’d have a
much easier time accomplishing those tasks in the iOS FaceBook app.

Hey all. So, continuing my whacky experiments with a Bluetooth keyboard, I

aren't, here are a couple specifics.

1. How do you close a page?

The rest of these are all Facebook:

2. How do you get back to a page? For example, suppose I click on the
notifications button and it says I have comments on three of my posts. I click
on the first comment somebody's made, then I want to get out of that and back
to the notifications, to see the next comment somebody's made.

3. Can you use edit fields? I tried to write a comment on a post. When I click
in the field, either with up and down arrows or VO-space, it says "quicknav
off" like it should, but when I start typing, it tries to jump me around the
page, I think 'h' was doing a heading navigation for example.

I know there are other features in safari on iOS I've forgotten about like the
reader thingy, because I honestly haven't used safari much. So a general guide
would be handy, if anybody's got one. Thanks!

Re: Converting from pages to office for submission in college classroom

2015-04-16 Thread Tim Kilburn
Hi,

Yes, at least in Canada, there is education pricing for the Office for Mac
suite and it is considerably less expensive. I can’t imagine that US customers
would have it any different. Regarding exporting Pages documents to Word, this
functionality is built right in to Pages. Make sure that your Pages document
is saved, then go up to the File menu, down to Export, right and down to Word
in the sub-menu. Follow the prompts and you’ll have a Word (.docx) document
just as simple as that.

Hi there! How accessible is HBO Now on iOS? I don't know if Game of Thrones
is described for HBO in the states because the only thing that has working
description is my parents' DirecTV, and they don't subscribe to HBO. I
thought about going with this trial since it would be at least $12 cheaper
than Time Warner per month when you factor in having to pay that for a box

This may be a silly question but I’m enjoying my free month of HBO Now and
would also like to take advantage of any audio description available. I know
that there’s audio description for Game Of Thrones as the audio is posted to
the Blind Mice Mart Movies site shortly after the season ends. Is this just
a feature for our British friends or can I access it here? If so, how? I’m
using an Apple TV and iPhone to access HBO Now.

The “Play” button is not accessible with VO on the iOS app for HBO Now, in this
version anyway. You have to turn off VO and tap the screen to get things to
play. thanks to the other lister who gave me that tip.

It’s much more accessible on the Apple TV.

On the phone though you can binge watch as episodes of a series will play in
order without stopping. I haven’t figured out how to do this on the TV yet.
Other than the play button issue, the iOS app is accessible as far as I’ve used
it. I haven’t gotten Air Play to work
but that’s not anything new. Jenine Stanley

That's an OS X bug, or perhaps a poorly implemented feature. What you have to

Re: audio description for HBO Now?

2015-04-16 Thread Brent Harding
Maybe from the control center it will work. I've been able to airplay
Meerkat streams this way, but it might be some copy protection junk at play
there. As for Netflix, you have to rangle with getting audio description
turned on with each episode, and sometimes it quits appearing. I wouldn't
advise trying to find it on Spanish, French, or German over there because it
just might make the screen that language, and then you have a real mess.

This is great news! It’s not that pages isn’t a fine app, but work places for
whatever reason generally use Microsoft products and, if this progress is
meaningful, and thus far, it appears to be, it could lead to more Macs in the
work place. My four sighted friends who are Mac users all use Microsoft office
for the Mac, I’m just happy to see the needs of blind users are at last being
considered.
One question for you all, how does one access the ribbon? I am not seeing a
ribbon, and I have used the toggle ribbon command with no results. I see no
ribbon on the screen.
Thanks.

Re: Ableton for mac.

2015-04-16 Thread Christopher-Mark Gilland
Logic actually is! accessible. Don't give people the wrong idea. It's
certainly by ab, suh, lootly! no means up to par with ProTools. That, I'll
give ya, but don't go around saying Logic doesn't work. I've used it in a
studio environment, and though it was limited the things I could accessibly
do, I was indeed independently able to bang out a session. Did I say it was
fun? Heavens no! But! it was doable, and that is the point.

I've never heard of the software you suggested, but how about Reaper from

http://www.reaper.com

in combination with Asara and SWF.

http://www.reaperaccess.com

Put all 3 together, you're only looking at $60.00.

And, Reaper is quite accessible on the mac, once you get SWF and Asara both
installed.

I'm still primarily a ProTools guy, by far and away, but I have been
exploring Reaper quite a bit more, and to be frankly honest, I'm incredibly
impressed at what I've so far seen.

Hi!
Is there any idea in trying out ableton live for mac?

Its sad that logic isn’t accessible as its less expensive than pro tools.

We've had this discussion on list with about 5 or 10 people answerring this

this has been answered already not just once or twice, but quite a few
times. Anyway, remember, Office 3 65 has absolutely nothing! and did I
mention nothing! to do with accessibility. Ab, suh, lootly? nothing! All
Office 3 65 is is simply a cheaper way for you to get what you'd normally
pay several hundred dollars to get Microsoft office up front. Instead of
paying for an office license, you're basically renting your license for a
monthly $10.00USD fee. In other words, as long as you keep paying that $10
fee, your license will keep working.

It's tied to your Microsoft live ID, and if you don't have one, then you can
create one for free. This is the same e-mail and password you use to sign
into all other Microsoft products and services. The term Office 3 65 is
nothing more than the name of the flat rate monthly subscription.

Whether you pay monthly for Office via Office 3 65, or! you simply just pay
outright for a license, nothing as far as the actual software is concerned
will change or be any different.

It's kind of like saying you're on a 200 minute plan with free nights and
weekends no data, no texting, vs. your on the 2GB data family share value
plan, unlimited text unlimited talk. Whether you're on that 200 minute
plan, or the data family share value, either way, you're still on the same
cellular network. It's just a plan difference. The plan difference though
isn't going to change how you use Talks, Mobile Squeak, Talkback, Narator,
Voiceover, etc. Same principle concept here. Office 3 65 is the name of a
plan which gives you Microsoft Office software for one month for the cost of
$10.00.

Does that make more sense? I hope so!

Yeah, but HBO now isn't gonna necessarily have all the same content that

Hi there! How accessible is HBO Now on iOS? I don't know if Game of Thrones
is described for HBO in the states because the only thing that has working
description is my parents' DirecTV, and they don't subscribe to HBO. I
thought about going with this trial since it would be at least $12 cheaper

Re: audio description for HBO Now?

2015-04-16 Thread Christopher-Mark Gilland
I actually have quite a predicament. I signed up for a trial to HBO Now,
using my Apple TV. The issue is, it never when creating the account and
setting up the ITunes subscription asked me for a password. Now, I can't
log in from the I O S app, because I don't know what my password is. It's
not my ITunes password. I already tried that. I think they e-mailed me a
randomly generated password, but I never got the e-mail. When I go to
forgot password, they e-mail the reset link to me, but apparently my e-mail
provider keeps eating it. No, this provider I use isn't GMail. For
security reasons, being I normally only use this e-mail address for my apple
ID, I'd rather not reveal which provider it is, but I will say I've gone in
on the webmail side and have made sure it wasn't in spam or junk, and it's
not.

So, how do I fix this issue? I can't just create another trial
subscription, and if I cancel this subscription, then, I won't have the
ability of getting another trial down the road.

Is there any way I can contact HBO Now and have them help me out? It's
looking like I'm gonna have to somehow change the e-mail address I used when
registerring. But, I can't do that, if I don't have my password.

I wouldn't advise trying to find it on Spanish, French, or German over

The “Play” button is not accessible with VO on the iOS app for HBO Now, in
this version anyway. You have to turn off VO and tap the screen to get
things to play. thanks to the other lister who gave me that tip.

It’s much more accessible on the Apple TV.

On the phone though you can binge watch as episodes of a series will play
in order without stopping. I haven’t figured out how to do this on the TV
yet. Other than the play button issue, the iOS app is accessible as far as
I’ve used it. I haven’t gotten Air Play to work

That's really weird, as the ribbon definitely is there when I use it. Stop
interacting with everything in Word, and I do mean, everything. Then go to the

paying for an office license, you're basically renting your license for a
monthly $10.00USD fee. In other words, as long as you keep paying that
$10

fee, your license will keep working.

It's tied to your Microsoft live ID, and if you don't have one, then you
can

create one for free. This is the same e-mail and password you use to sign
into all other Microsoft products and services. The term Office 3 65 is
nothing more than the name of the flat rate monthly subscription.

Whether you pay monthly for Office via Office 3 65, or! you simply just
pay

outright for a license, nothing as far as the actual software is concerned
will change or be any different.

The plan difference
though

isn't going to change how you use Talks, Mobile Squeak, Talkback, Narator,
Voiceover, etc. Same principle concept here. Office 3 65 is the name of
a
plan which gives you Microsoft Office software for one month for the cost
of

$10.00.

Does that make more sense? I hope so!

Chris.

Re: Office 365.

2015-04-16 Thread Christopher-Mark Gilland
I know one thing: I just submitted a bug report. At the end, it says this
survey is conducted by Com Store marketting research. I damn well hope they
don't start calling me trying to market things to me, or give me those
stupid phone calls like Do you wanna go back to school? Apparently they
collect data on behalf of Microsoft, so God only knows where things are
really first hand going before MS sees them.

I gave my phone number, just in case they need to follow up. Now, I'm kind
a wishing I hadn't done so.

VoiceOver volume is down

2015-04-16 Thread Antonio Guimaraes
Hello,

My Voiceover speaking volume is going down for no apparent reason.

I have an earPod headset plugged in.

The volume seems to come back when I press back space, as when typing this
message right now. I am not sure what makes it go in and out. I am in a noisy
environment. I can only imagine some noise-canceling feature is activated.

However, only the VoiceOver speaking volume is affected. Media, and effects are
not.

Perplexed,

About Garageband Mac

2015-04-16 Thread Daniela Rubio
Hello:
I have some questions for GB experts.
Question 1.
Can we, in an accessible way, establish a certain region, from bar x to bar y
to reproduce as a loop?
I can see that it might be done by the ruler, but I can’t see that Ruler. If I
want to do it, the loop always is set up in the region from bar 1 to bar 4. How
can I move that?

Question 2.
Is there a way to go to the end of the project with a shortcut as we could do
before?

Question 3.
How can we set ut an area of track automatization, for example, to change pan
or volume? Is this accessible?
Thank you for your helpful aid!

Re: Navigating safari in iOS.

2015-04-16 Thread John Schucker
I probably would, but I can't get the FB app, as the minimum
requirements are iOS 7, and I'm running 6.whatever. That's the latest my
iPod touch will take. I tried clicking the "all versions" link in iTunes
or whatever it is to see if I could get at an older version, but it
didn't really seem to actually change anything. If you know of a way to
get an older version, I'd surely appreciate it.

Thanks for the Safari tip, see I totally forgot about that. Is the
reader just a button as well? You know the thing that strips links and
such out of articles?

web, so can’t really answer those questions other than to say that you’d have a
much easier time accomplishing those tasks in the iOS FaceBook app.

When I click in the
field, either with up and down arrows or VO-space, it says "quicknav off" like
it should, but when I start typing, it tries to jump me around the page, I think 'h' was
doing a heading navigation for example.

I know there are other features in safari on iOS I've forgotten about like the
reader thingy, because I honestly haven't used safari much. So a general guide
would be handy, if anybody's got one. Thanks!

Re: Help needed with DJay pro

2015-04-16 Thread Yuma Decaux
Hey Scott,

Never stop it. I used to Deejay before I lost sight but couldn’t stop going.
Now my rig’s quite messy because of the number of things I’ve connected to my
setup but I use Logic pro x and deejay in concert with a bunch of controllers
and instruments. Deejay can be placed as a channel in logic pro x with
controllers assigned to deejay controls and others to logic pro x controls. I
would recommend to anyone to use controllers. The initial mapping setup is a
nightmare to do, test and retest but once you got it, there’s nothing more
entertaining and fun + you can do things very quickly instead of voing around
with standard keys.

Controllerizm beats typing everytime.

Cheers,

I know there are ways of running the above synthesiser on a Mac.

But it's horribly unstable.

Putting aside the Infovox voices are there any text to speech products that can
be used on OS X that rival eloquence for responsiveness?

Re: the reminders app

2015-04-16 Thread Robin
Are you or anyone using Siri able to have Siri
Set a Reminder such as, Remind Me to say "Happy
Birthday" to "my sweety" (insert your sweety's name)? Just Wondering

You could interchange "Happy Birthday" for
anything such as, "Happy Mother's Day", "Congratulations forr ...", ETC.

I know for a fact this can be performed on other
MobilePlatforms with their respective Personal
Assistants at least 1 MobilePlatform

How To Make Your Mac Chime When You Plug It In

2015-04-16 Thread Alex Hall
Hi all,
I saw this today and thought it was pretty cool. I tried it, and it worked; my
Mac now plays the familiar chime we all know and love from iOS when it gets
plugged in. In other words, my phone and Mac now play the same sound when I
hook them to power. No, it's not necessary, but I really like it and it's just
one command I could undo if I ever wanted to. Here's how to do this (remember,
you need OS X 10.10.3 or newer):

What on earth is going on with verifying billing info in iTunes store on my Macbook with Yosemite?

2015-04-16 Thread Christine Grassman
I purchased and downloaded a few things from the app store on my iPhone earlier
with no problem. Just now, however, when I attempted to renew a subscription, I
was asked in the iTunes store, on my MacBook, to verify the billing info. It is
showing the correct final four digits for my credit card, and is giving me two
pop-up menus for month and year. Nothing I do is enabling me to select month
and year; there are a series of bullets in each field, so I don’t know whether
they are filled in already and just not showing. Then there is an empty edit
box for the security code. Am I supposed to assume the month and year are
correct, tab past and just fill in the security code?
TIA.

I understand that, but there is no way for me to tell whether what they have is
correct if I cannot read the month and year, and/or cannot move to the correct
month and year because the pop-up menu is not working.

Re: audio description for HBO Now?

2015-04-16 Thread Brent Harding
Of course not, but since I have the preferred package, or whatever it is
that likely would have few channels that aren't available without a box, it
doesn't make sense to pay extra for the box if all I wanted beyond my
package was HBO since HBO Now is available online. Another benefit lots
didn't think of is that you can, through iTunes, cancel and resubscribe any
month you want without the $5 setup fees cable might charge, so if you watch
for specific things that come and go, you can do that.

Yeah, but HBO now isn't gonna necessarily have all the same content that
you'd find with Time Warner Cable. For example: I highly highly doubt that
you'd find Dr. Phil on HBO Now.

Hi there! How accessible is HBO Now on iOS? I don't know if Game of Thrones
is described for HBO in the states because the only thing that has working
description is my parents' DirecTV, and they don't subscribe to HBO. I
thought about going with this trial since it would be at least $12 cheaper
than Time Warner per month when you factor in having to pay that for a box
each month.

Help please! My MacBook is not turning on

2015-04-16 Thread Ezzie Bueno
Hello friends:

The subject says it, my MacBook is not turning on, despite the charger being
plugged in. The last time I used it, I only shut the lid for the night and the
next day it wouldn't power on. I plugged it into the charger thinking that it
might have died, but it still doesn't turn on. I've tried using different
outlets, and different chargers and I get no results. What advice do you have
for me that I could try? And by the way, this is a MacBook Pro 2012.
Any help is greatly appreciated. :-)

Thanks,
Ezzie

Re: Converting from pages to office for submission in college classroom

2015-04-16 Thread Grant Hardy
Lately, Microsoft has been giving Office 365 subscriptions away to students for
free, provided you attend an eligible school. You generally need to enter your
school’s Email address to confirm eligibility. My understanding is that this is
supposed to be a worldwide offer. Details may be found here:
http://products.office.com/en-us/student?tab=students

The current shipping version of Office for Mac is not accessible with VoiceOver
but it appears that the next version of Office will be more accessible.
Microsoft is offering a public preview of the next version of Office for Mac
right now, and the latest preview build offers pretty good, basic VoiceOver
accessibility in Word. If your daughter wants to switch to Office, give the
Preview a go and see if it meets her needs. You can find more information about
the preview here: https://products.office.com/en-us/mac/mac-preview

That said, as Tim stated, you don’t have to switch away from Pages for the sole
reason of wanting to save in Word format. You can export to Microsoft Word
format from within any Pages document. The option is under the export submenu,
found in the file menu.

Lastly, if for whatever reason you need to fall back to Windows in the future,
you don’t need to purchase a separate computer. You can install Windows on the
same Mac machine you already use. You might have to buy Windows from the
Microsoft Store if you don’t already have a license, but this should be cheaper
and more convenient than buying a whole new PC. Here’s an article from
Microsoft explaining Boot Camp. The article references Windows 7, but it
includes a link to the Microsoft Store where you can buy Windows 8.

Hi,

It could be stuck in state that doesn’t recognize the power on request. Hold
down the power button for 5 to 10 seconds then release. Wait at least 30
seconds after that then try to power it on again. See if that does the trick.
Let us know the results and there are other things to do before giving up.

Matt, remember that you need to be running 10.10.3. You also need to have the

RE: How To Make Your Mac Chime When You Plug It In

2015-04-16 Thread M. Taylor
Hello Alex,

Thanks for this. It's pretty nifty.

Now, if we could only get VoiceOver to say, "Screen Locked" when one locks the
screen on the Mac; making it consistent with the iOS experience. (smile).

When the bottom row of apps, in iOS, began being preceded by the word "doc" I
thought it would only be a matter of time before locked screen would be
announced in OSX.

I know there are ways of running the above synthesiser on a Mac.

But it's horribly unstable.

Putting aside the Infovox voices are there any text to speech products that can
be used on OS X that rival eloquence for responsiveness?

Re: Help please! My MacBook is not turning on

2015-04-16 Thread Ezzie Bueno
Hi:

I've tried the suggestions that you guys sent me, including everything that's
in the online support article. Unfortunately, my MacBook will still not turn
on. The speech is not muted, as I can tell that the light on my screen is it
coming on. I also have the control F 11 and F 12 Comanced make sounds when I
increase and decrease the volume, as that is how I can sometimes tell whether
my computer is on and I'm just turned off voiceover for the use of someone
else. I hear no chime or anything when I try powering up the computer. I guess
I'm going to have to visit the Apple Store, which is always a nightmare! LOL.

Any further suggestions would be appreciated. :-)

Best,
Ezzie Bueno

I don't recall seeing those symbols in the command. It should be on its own

Re: Help please! My MacBook is not turning on

2015-04-16 Thread Tim Kilburn
Hi,

One last thing before going to the Apple Store. Try an SMC reset. To
accomplish this, plug in your power adaptor to the wall and to your MBP. Hold
down the left-side shift-control-option keys at the same time as pressing the
power button. Release them all. Wait about five seconds then try the power
again. If that doesn’t do anything, then it sounds like it may be the logic
board and that means a trip to the Apple Store or Apple Authorized Service
Provider. Not good news either. I’ll stop there.

Hi,

It works on an early 2011 MBP. Now if I could figure out how to make it chime
if it got unplugged too, just in case it accidentally gets pulled out.

I don't think this will be doable because I can't get the wine.app. Anybody
have it? Even when I go to the homepage, the download link for the wine app
don't seem to exist. And the one that is in the README file simply isn't found.

Cant' access help menu in Microsoft Word for mac

2015-04-16 Thread Andrew Lamanche
Hi Listers,

I've successfully installed Microsoft Word on my macbook pro. When I go to the
menubar and voiceover to the help menu, I can find the search field, I can type
the search term, but I can't seem to read any results. There's a table there
but it appears to be empty or voiceover reads just "image" and I can't
activate anything there. By the way, I don't see the "check for update" item
in the help menu either. Is this regular?

Many thanks

Andrew

RE: How To Make Your Mac Chime When You Plug It In

2015-04-16 Thread M. Taylor
Hello Joe,

ON a Mac notebook, running Yosemite, you may lock the screen by simply pressing
the power button for approximately one
second. There is no audio feedback, indicating that the screen has been
successfully locked. Please note that pressing the power button for longer
than one second will cause the Shutdown prompt to appear.

Press almost any key on the notebook to unlock the screen.

This is for Joe who asked about elequence for the Mac earlier.

I found the Wine app in my dropbox.

I’ve given him feedback so here’s hoping he fixes some of the latency.

The Wine translation is so fragile as to be pointless IMO.

I agree: I wish Apple would just acknowledge that formant synthesis has some
merit, and let third parties join the fun. Tell Apple you think so, and
perhaps they’ll listen. Somehow though, I feel fairly sure that politics
and/or stalwart loyalism will keep it from actually happening. Hey, there’s
already Fred if you insist on staying in the past, and Alex is really awesome …

How do I go about installing Microsoft Office on to my Mac?

2015-04-16 Thread Eleanor Roberts
Hi list

Please forgive my ignorance and hope you can help me. I've currently got Office
365 running on my IPad and IPhone so I can use Word etc. However, having read
recent e-mails and seeing how accessible Office for Mac seems to have become
I'm quite keen to try and install it on my Mac tooo. So was wondering if anyone
could send me sone instructions on how I go about installing it please? Also,
bearing in mind I'm already paying for Office 365, will I need to create a new
account for my Mac?, or will I be able to use the same one?

I'm also quite keen to do this as I have an interview on Monday, and think it'd
be great to be able to tell them that I can successfully use Word etc on my Mac
as well as my IPad.

So any help anyone can give with this on how to install the programme would be
much appreciated.

Many thanks.

Eleanor

Re: How do I go about installing Microsoft Office on to my Mac?

2015-04-16 Thread sadamahmed1992
Hi Eleanor,

You can access the preview at the below link:

http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/p/?LinkId=523849.

Once it's downloaded open the file and proceed with the regular software
installation.

Then open word and use your screen reader commands to check for updates.

Relaunch word from the doc or applications folder and you should be good to go.

Regarding Office 365 I don't believe you need to pay again.

Kind regards,

Re: How To Make Your Mac Chime When You Plug It In

2015-04-16 Thread christopher hallsworth
I did it just now. You paste in the window that has keyboard focus when
Terminal first opens. I had to look it up in the edit menu, since on the other
platform with its own command prompt the paste command there doesn't work. On
the mac, it's different and in fact easier. The regular paste command,
command-v, does work.
