one password

2015-03-21 Thread jeff `greene
Hi, This might have been covered before, but here goes... I have been
wanting to use a password manager like one password for a long time. I
heard a while ago that part of one password wasn't accessible, have
they corrected that? Also I tried a password manager on the windows
side a while ago that promised to log me into all my sites
automatically. But, it only worked about half the time. How is one
password on automatic log-ins?
Thanks, Jeff

Re: audacity help please

2015-03-21 Thread Alex Hall
Sound flower is broken in Yosemite, and hasn't gotten updated yet. I'm not sure
where it came into this discussion--I thought the goal was recording via
microphone, but I was obviously mistaken. Audio Hijack, from
www.rogueamoeba.com, can do what you want, and www.applevis.com has a podcast I
did explaining that app. You can record using Audio Hijack, then edit the
resulting files in Audacity.

Chris, I'm not sure why you'd want to switch to Audacity over Pro Tools, if you
already have it. Pro Tools is way more advanced and polished, from what I hear;
Audacity is great for a lot of things, but it's still free. If you have Pro
Tools already, I can't see an advantage is not using it and using Audacity
instead.

As to all the effects you asked about, I've not done that kind of work. All I
can do is point you to the online help and forums, and suggest you go through
all the options in the Effects menu. Those dialogs should all be accessible,
though you'll need to tab through them or focus won't follow you to edit fields
correctly. Keep in mind that Audacity can also handle any Nyqvist plugins you
want to throw at it, so you may well find a third-party effect you prefer and
use that instead.

I just installed the pianoteq 5 demo on my mac. This ranks far above
Truepianos. The sound is fairly realistic and approaches that of an acoustic
piano. I’m considering buying it depending on the cost and the potential
hastle of getting it installed and configured. True pianos sounds like a toy
in comparison.

Hi there.

I think you’d better inform yourself how this stuff works. Happily, there just
_happens_ to be a book on the subject, by a person that just _happens_ to be on
this list, and that just _happens_ to be targeted at the blind/VI, from Mosen
Consulting. It is paid, but it’s a great listen. Details here:
http://mosen.org/index.php/audiobook-imagine-theres-no-countries/

As to the legality claim, I think it’s best to take a wild guess, take a risk,
or check with your council. Certainly you are going against the wishes of the
Copyright holder; for the UK, the content is only for consumption by
licence-fee payers. I don’t agree with the author that geoblock avoidance is
that different from piracy, but I also heartily agree that it’s a very good
idea. The Internet is meant to be global, and if you can reach the content, I
think you’re entitled to it. Most VPN services are specifically targeted to
solving your problem; they let you connect to a server in the target country,
and essentially route your traffic by way of that server, hence giving you
access to material that is supposedly restricted to that region.

Have fun!

Cheers,
Sabahattin

I haven’t found any part of 1password on the mac, or iPhone that wasn’t
accessible. There is a way to log in to sites automatically, put you must log
in to 1password first, this is to keep your data more secure.

Hi Cliph, Thanks for the info! I believe in earlier versions of one
password the safari plug-in that did the auto-log-in was the part that
didn't work. Also, do I get one password from the app store, or from
the developer's website?
Thanks, Jeff

Re: one password

2015-03-21 Thread Rod Skene
I have the Mac App Store version of one password. I also have not found
anything that seems to be an accessible with the app although I have some
trouble completing some tasks. I think most of my problems or me and not
accessibility issues. I'm sure if I studied the manual more I would be a better
one password user.
I also have the iOS app and it works great. Rod

Sent from my iPhone with dictation software. Please excuse any errors.

Upgrade from iPhone 5 to iPhone6?

2015-03-21 Thread Phil Halton
My 2 year contract ends in a few weeks and I’m tempted to upgrade from the
iPhone 5 to the 6. Is this just a lateral move or are there some real upsides
to this upgrade? How about downsides?
Thanks

Re: Upgrade from iPhone 5 to iPhone6?

2015-03-21 Thread jeff `greene
Hi Phil, I just upgraded from the 5s to the 6. Wasn't planning on
doing it but I was having trouble with my old carrier and wanted to
switch. The PRO side of the upgrade is: the 6 is faster, the 6's
radios seem faster, and I like the bigger screen and thinner design.
The biggest speed difference I've noticed is that if podcasts are
downloading I now can play internet-connected games without noticing
any lag. Also the phone reboots faster if you need to shut it down. I
haven't really noticed any cons.
Hope this helps! Jeff

Re: audacity help please

2015-03-21 Thread Christopher-Mark Gilland
I wasn't planning to switch entirely. I just wonderred how much could be done
in Audacity, as coming from the standpoint of an audio engineer as myself, the
more software and tools I have to work with, the better.

Choice is a good thing!

Chris.

Sound flower is broken in Yosemite, and hasn't gotten updated yet. I'm not
sure where it came into this discussion--I thought the goal was recording via
microphone, but I was obviously mistaken. Audio Hijack, from
www.rogueamoeba.com, can do what you want, and www.applevis.com has a podcast I
did explaining that app. You can record using Audio Hijack, then edit the
resulting files in Audacity.

Chris, I'm not sure why you'd want to switch to Audacity over Pro Tools, if
you already have it. Pro Tools is way more advanced and polished, from what I
hear; Audacity is great for a lot of things, but it's still free. If you have
Pro Tools already, I can't see an advantage is not using it and using Audacity

Hi Jeff,

Do you have any plastic templates to put on your IPhone 6 screen? The reason I
am asking is I have large finger tips, & on an IPhone 5 I was constantly
touching 2 screen buttons. That is why I refused receiving one of those IPhones.

If you do have, or know of such templates, Please fwd the name of your outlet &
prices.

Greatly Appreciated & Thanks,

Re: Upgrade from iPhone 5 to iPhone6?

2015-03-21 Thread Alex Hall
The only downside is the size. The 6 is larger than the 5, though not by all
that much, and the 6 Plus is a monster. You'll also need new accessories--case,
screen protector, etc. Aside from that, and the fact that you'll then be in a
new contract with the 6 and thereby miss this year's updated phone, there are
no downsides I can think of. The upsides are numerous:

* faster processor and cell connection
* Apple Pay, if your area and bank support it
* Touch ID, for using your fingerprint in place of some passwords and to unlock
your phone
* better battery
* larger screen
* better camera
* I know I'm forgetting more

Re: Bring back the old Garage Band

2015-03-21 Thread Christopher-Mark Gilland
I'm very very glad you liked it. You will need sighted help getting it
licensed with your key, but once that is done, you're good to go.

Let me make a major suggestion though, just to save you some money in the
longrun. Don't get the full Pianoteq package. First of all, a lot of what
it can do can be done with a good recording DAW. Basically, what it gives
you are things like placing virtual microphones in the spectrom to give
different color tonements, and different frequency responses. You can set
virtual spacement, meaning, how much space on the spectrom between your
left/right channels, and where on the keyboard... which note... you want the
crossover to start, and how deep of a crossover slope you want. Things like
this. A lot of this could be done as well though with a good phasing plugin
within your DAW. ProTools has a few of these which are very good, and I'm
sure that Garageband, even in the older versions does as well. If nothing
else, though a bit pricy, check out some of the stuff both from isotope, or
from Waves. Both of which have plugs that could be used in GB that are
just! fan! Tastic! Anyway, getting back to Pianoteq... I'd personally just
go with Pianoteq Stage. You're only going to get basically one bank of
pianos with this version, if I understand correctly, but here's the other
thing... Unless you have someone prepare you already made presets, the main
plugin window isn't going to be the most accessible. It kind of is, but I
just don't know to what extent. If all you're wanting though is a decent
sounding grand piano, then Pianoteq Stage is probably most likely all you'll
need. It's not Synthogy Ivory by any means, nor is it my Roland RP401R
Rosewood digital piano by any means, but it definitely does get the job
done.

Chris
I just installed the pianoteq 5 demo on my mac. This ranks far above
Truepianos. The sound is fairly realistic and approaches that of an
acoustic piano. I’m considering buying it depending on the cost and the
potential hastle of getting it installed and configured. True pianos sounds
like a toy in comparison.

Video isn't going to happen, Audacity is audio only. You could use iMovie
or another app for adding the finished audio track to a video project.

To do what you're wanting, just open Audacity; it will have a new project
open automatically. Hit cmd-comma, choose the Devices item from the table, and
interact with the scroll area, then review the items to be sure your audio
input is set how you want. Stop interacting twice, find the OK button, and
press it.

Now, use R to record. Space will stop recording, and P will pause or
resume recording without stopping completely. Once you have the instrumental
track, and have pressed space to stop it, repeat the process for vocals, and
any other layers you want.

Use up and down arrows to move through your different tracks. Vo-shift-m
will open a context menu, from where you can rename, move, and otherwise adjust
each track.

Re: Upgrade from iPhone 5 to iPhone6?

2015-03-21 Thread Christopher-Mark Gilland
Oh, my, gosh! Do it! Again, I said, do it do it do it! I upgraded my 5S,
and I tell ya, though I still have it as a non-activated backup, I would
never! look back under normal circumstances.

I think the screen with the little vision I have is way better, the internal
speakel is most definitely better in my opinion, and finally I find that
things run a bit more snappy, and are a bit more responsive over all. Yes,
the physical size of the 6 and 6 Plus are significantly bigger than the 5
and 5S, I'll give you that, as well for that mind, as the 5C. Some people
hate this, and say it's way way way way! too big for them. Personally,
maybe it's just me, but I found the extra size to be very welcomed. I
actually found it to spacially help me tremendously. This however will vary
from person to person.

I'd suggest going in and looking at one. If your contract is up, and you
won't pay anything anyway, then you really honestly might as well do it.

Just my two cents.

2015-03-21 Thread Christopher-Mark Gilland
Also, one other thing I thought of: I'm not sure if this is a 5X vs. a 6X
thing or not, but I'm finding that Safari works amazingly well on the 6 Plus
I have. On my 5S, don't get me wrong, it worked fairly decently, but there
were some issues here and there. Finding things on a web site with the item
chooser, for example, didn't always seem to correctly work. Now, I only
know maybe of one web site that the chooser pukes and chokes on, and the
only reason is because the web site has literally over 12 thousand links on
the one page itself, so you can probably imagine. That's quite extreme
though. And before anyone asks what the hell web site this is that would be
so big, I'm sorry, but unfortunately, I'm not authorized to disclose that
information, so, you're just gonna have to therefore take my word on this.

the other thing I absolutely love about my 6 Plus is, I went from a 32GB 5S
to the 6 Plus 128GB. Being I'm a music lover at heart, a professional
musician, and a sound engineer all 3, having that extra capassity is more
worth it than you ever could know!

I would never use hide my ass VPN. They do log your web traffic.

Re: Upgrade from iPhone 5 to iPhone6?

2015-03-21 Thread Alex Hall
I know it happens every year. Given that we're about halfway there already,
though, why not pick the newer one if you'll have it for two years? It's not
like upgrading from a 4 or 4S, where you're stuck on iOS7 and modern apps cause
your device to run really slowly. The 5 is a capable device, though time will
tell what iOS9 does to it, and if you're replacing it but it still works, I'd
wait. Besides, what if the next generation finally drops the 16GB model, and
instead starts at 32GB for the same price? I explained this much better in the
article I wrote for AppleVis, so I'll just put that link below.

Re: Upgrade from iPhone 5 to iPhone6?

2015-03-21 Thread Lisette Wesseling
Hi there,
For the person wanting the screen protector with dots for the iPhones, they are
made by speeddots.com and are sold by them and lots of other vendors.
They have two models: a standard and an advanced. The www.speeddots.com website
is the one I've always used, and explains everything very clearly.
Good luck.

If I remember how this works correctly, and forgive me. It's been a while
since I first downloaded the software, I think that you need to sign up before
given access to the download link. Have you done this yet? Trust me if not.
It's well worth it! I along with about 5 of my other blind friends, both
Windows, and Mac users use it, and we all swear by it! Trust me, I'd not steer
ya wrong. And, yes. They definitely do have a trial. I want to say it's 7
days, if I'm not mistaking. So, if you don't like it, no big deal. If nothing
else, no promises, but I might still have the dmg lying around. Just know
however if I do, you'll still have to sign up so that you can log the software
into your account.

Re: hide my ass vpn

2015-03-21 Thread Sabahattin Gucukoglu
Somebody had to say it.

I know the app is very accessible and the service is very populist, but do see:
https://invisibler.com/lulzsec-and-hidemyass/

Ultimately, if you aren’t doing anything naughty, you’ll be fine, and HMA is
reputed to be a very good service. It also has the most servers, so if that’s
a very important consideration for you, go with them. But Private Internet
Access and VyprVPN are the other contenders in this game, and I think check out
their policies and support if you want to avoid the logging, even if the app is
less accessible, there are fewer servers, and possibly worse speeds.

Re: hide my ass vpn

2015-03-21 Thread Christopher-Mark Gilland
OK, firstly, I don't use the I O S app, but I do know a friend of mine who
does. The app isn't actually called Hide My Ass, so let me check with him and
see the name of it exactly, then I can send you a share link via e-mail.

As for where to download the software, I looked, and unfortunately, I don't
actually have the dmg any longer. Let me look on the web site, and see if I
can find it.

Somebody had to say it.

I know the app is very accessible and the service is very populist, but do
see:

https://invisibler.com/lulzsec-and-hidemyass/

Ultimately, if you aren’t doing anything naughty, you’ll be fine, and HMA is
reputed to be a very good service. It also has the most servers, so if that’s
a very important consideration for you, go with them. But Private Internet
Access and VyprVPN are the other contenders in this game, and I think check
out their policies and support if you want to avoid the logging, even if the
app is less accessible, there are fewer servers, and possibly worse speeds.

Re: vpn service

2015-03-21 Thread Sabahattin Gucukoglu
The way I do multiple geographic VPN servers with Vypr is to simply set up
multiple profiles in iOS settings. From what I’ve heard of HMA, that’s
actually the right way to do it there, too, because every time you switch
region you need a fresh VPN profile. Indeed, if you can get the app to work
for you, Vypr are making a big thing of not needing that; you install a profile
just once, and they use DNS redirection to send you to the right server
according to your choice in the app.

My understanding is that HMA excels in server location diversity, whereas Vypr
is clearly very good at protocol support, better at privacy, and delivers
variable speeds (some people report it is the worst in their benchmark tests
for some regions). I, needing only the UK and Turkey, found no difficulty
there, because the connectivity is fine, but having fewer servers means you do
need to be close to a server in order to gain the speeds. However I must tell
you that I never did sign up for HMA. Vypr simply met all my requirements, and
the free trial checked out OK for me, so I signed up for Basic for a year.

Cheers,
Sabahattin

mp3 re-encoder

2015-03-21 Thread jeffrey greene
Hi, I’ve been looking for a program to re-encode mp3’s and reduce the size of
my audio books. I’ve been having no luck either on the web or mac app store.
Everybody recommends something called mp3 quality modifier but when I download
it its a windows program. Anybody have any suggestions? I downloaded 2 mp3
converter apps from the mac app store but they both shorten the playback time
of the converted file.
Thanks, Jeff

If I remember how this works correctly, and forgive me. It's been a while
since I first downloaded the software, I think that you need to sign up before
given access to the download link. Have you done this yet? Trust me if not.
It's well worth it! I along with about 5 of my other blind friends, both
Windows, and Mac users use it, and we all swear by it! Trust me, I'd not steer
ya wrong. And, yes. They definitely do have a trial. I want to say it's 7
days, if I'm not mistaking. So, if you don't like it, no big deal. If nothing

Anyway, I'm gonna put a link to this site up on my web site, and believe you

Do you have a blog or a web site? If so, I'd love to link to it as well, to
help you generate some traffic.

RE: mp3 re-encoder

2015-03-21 Thread jeffrey greene
Hi guys, I finally found an app to re-encode my audio books. Its called pro
audio convertor from the mac app store. This is the third app zI’ve tried, all
the others shortened the file and cut the end of the book off. I just
re-encoded a Derek Landy book that was 1.02gb its now 267mb and its the same
length as before.
Just thought you’d want to know. Jeff

  Wayne,

I found the download link. You're right, it was a little tricky to find. I
had to google it. I'm uploading it now to a more convenient place for you,
then will e-mail you the link, so be on the lookout.
