Re: Big news for all Microsoft Office and or iOS fans!

2014-11-09 Thread BobH.
"a custom gesture: a two-finger double-tap to open an edit menu for a cell."

Surprised that doesn't start music or answer a call, close a call, prevent
some of those, or open cells when trying to do any of those other things.
That's hardly a custom gesture since it's fundamental to the rest of iOs.

I've come across the Rotor concept in other apps which then conflict with
the VoiceOver one.
This, in essence, is the same as that; i.e: it's a fundamental VoiceOver
gesture already.

Hello Chris and list,

It’s obvious that Microsoft has put some thought into how VO accessibility
should be implemented throughout this suite, so I hate to be too picky.
Nevertheless, here are my first impressions of the iPhone version of
Microsoft Office. I do not currently have access to the iPad version so I
cannot comment on its functionality. I do, however, have an Office 365
subscription, so I have full access to the suite.

In the iPhone version of Word, I haven’t figured out how to do too much
beyond basic text editing. For example, I am unable to work with tables as I
can in Pages. I also found that navigating by line with VO could sometimes
be unreliable in that VO would stop speaking the contents of the line under
the cursor, but I am also experiencing this problem in some other apps while
running iOS 8.1 so it may not be a Microsoft Word issue.

Microsoft Excel seems to be the most accessible app in the suite. There are
custom voiceover hints built-in as well as a custom gesture: a two-finger
double-tap to open an edit menu for a cell. I am quite impressed with my
first tour of Excel.

Microsoft PowerPoint has clearly also had some accessibility built in, but
on my iPhone 5s running iOS 8.1 it simply crashes too much to be usable. It
is clear that both playing and editing presentations have great potential to
work with VO as most of the controls speak well. I was able to open a large
PowerPoint presentation and move through the slides and see the content of
each slide. I was also able to select one of the text boxes in my
presentation to begin editing it. Unfortunately, before I do much I am
usually faced with the app crashing. At that point you have to re-launch the
app and start afresh, only to find, at least on my device, that it crashes
again before too long.

These apps integrate with a number of places for storing files including
Dropbox, which I am very impressed with. The menu options also appear to be
quite accessible. In short, the apps have a great foundation and with some
improvements may turn out to be a wonderful productivity suite, but I can’t
rely on them yet, with the exception, perhaps, of Excel.

Hi all
Yes, Microsoft Office is now available for iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad at a

Excel and PowerPoint right now from your nearest App Store. Best of all, it

at least done with full VoiceOver support! I congratulate Microsoft on their
efforts, and hope they keep it this way and is a good sign for things to
come, such as an accessible Office for OS X.
Enjoy!

opening not authorized programs

2014-11-09 Thread William Windels
Hello,

I was trying to open a program that I have downloaded from the internet but I
couldn’t do that because my security settings where set to allow only programs
to install from the app store and known developers.

Perhaps , this is a good/save option but sometimes , I would like to install
other programs also.

I know , I can change this in the security pannel but there is also a option
with control and clicking on the program to allow to install that program only.

My question: is there a way for vo-users to select this option for one time
with a similar procedure?

Kind regards,
William Windels

Hi, yes you can do this just fine using VoiceOver. Simply press VO+Shift+M to
open the shortcut menu and choose Open.

Of course, do be sure the app you want to run is actually legitimate and
obtained from a reputable source, else all the effort OS X has put into helping
you will have been for nothing. I don't know many apps now not signed though,
except for my own software and software that was never intended for the Apple
ecosystem.

Hi William,

Yes you can. Once you receive the warning message, press okay on it and then
in application folder, find your newly downloaded app, activate contextual menu
with vo+shift+m and choose open. You will get a different warning now with the
“open” and “cancel” button. Choose open.

Voiceover doesn't read attachment name after it's been attached in the body of the message

Under Mavericks, once I’ve pasted an attachment into the body of a new message,
Voiceover would read the name of this attachment. Under Yosemite, all I can

one of them, does it affect all the user accounts on that machine, or just

Safari Podcast 6

2014-11-09 Thread David Griffith
Someone has emailed me to report that Sendspace has weirdly renamed my
Safari Podcast Part 6 on searching so that the file extension is mp36
rather than mp3. I have deleted this version and re-uploaded the
original file which has the correct mp3 extension. Of course if you
have downloaded a version with this incorrect extension you also have
the option of renaming the original file extension from mp36 to mp3
yourself. The file will then play fine. I downloaded the file myself
to test his and the actual file is not corrupted just renamed. Very odd.

Re: how to add a 100 MB partition to my other partition

2014-11-09 Thread Jonathan C. Cohn
Is this 100MB partition on the same drive? Was it created with Bootcamp
assistant or just when creating the partition map? Disk partitions on Yosemite
are a bit different than on earlier system, so you should probably look up a
recent technical document. The boot partition in Yosemite uses the technology
used in Fusion drives that merge a SSD and a regular disk drive into one single
volume. It might be that there is a volume manager to handle this.

In some respects int might be just as well to keep the partition separate and
mount it as part of the process.
Best wishes,

Jonathan

Re: Big news for all Microsoft Office and or iOS fans!

2014-11-09 Thread Grant Hardy
Hi Bob,

Well, I suppose I could have clarified my message further. You are obviously
correct in that the two-finger double-tap gesture is hardly a new one for
VoiceOver users; it is in fact used extensively throughout the system. The
reason I referred to Excel as having a "custom gesture" is because of the
custom behaviour that Microsoft implemented for this gesture (e.g. showing
editing options for a cell).

I agree that another approach that didn't conflict with normal VoiceOver
behaviour may have been better.

Hi all
Yes, Microsoft Office is now available for iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad at a

at least done with full VoiceOver support! I congratulate Microsoft on their
efforts, and hope they keep it this way and is a good sign for things to
come, such as an accessible Office for OS X.
Enjoy!

RE: odd cursor behavior with VO and Mail tables

2014-11-09 Thread M. Taylor
Hello Mark B.

Did you ever resolve your mail navigation problem?

Subject: odd cursor behavior with VO and Mail tables

I’m having an issue with Voiceover’s operation within Mail under Yosemite. I
read my mail by interacting with the messages table and cursoring down through
subject fields. When I want to read the text of a message, I use VO-J to get
to the message content area and read it. Now, though, when I hit VO-J, my VO
mac’s cursor is not moving to the message content area, but the VO cursor still
is. The result is that I can read a message’s content with my VO cursor, but
my native cursor is still in the messages table, and if I use the arrow keys
without VO keys, my focus moves to an entirely different message, and the
content area changes. I have checked that the VO cursor is following the PC
cursor. I’ve checked that cursor tracking is on. I’ve restarted VO and even
the entire computer. My cursors keep separating in Mail, and I don’t like it.
Any fixes for this?

Cursor tracking problems when using my trackpad

2014-11-09 Thread Agent086b
Hello all,
in the past week or so I am being driven mad by VO when using my trackpad.
When flicking right either in Safari or on my desktop I have the following
problem.
VO will read something else on the screen before where I am. EG if on the
desktop I will hear Macintosh HD as I flick through the icons then the one I am
on. If in Safari if flicking down through headings I may hear what page I am on
then the heading. Cursor tracking says it is on. It is obvious that some cursor
is just not following. It is so bad I am giving up reading newspaper. I can
jump to headings with QuickNav on but when I flick through an article it then
reads some other part of the screen.
Does anybody else have this problem? If so do you have a fix.
I am using latest Safari and Yosemite.
Thanks for any help.
Max
