I would suggest though, that as a general matter, you should use a Fit-Headless
or other similar device with Mac Minis, so the operating system can grind on
the GPU; without it, the performance will be unimpressive, to say the least of
it.

There hasn't been anything happening on that list for some time now.
I don't know what it means if anything, but it might be necessary to start
another one at some point. It seems to come to life every once in a while, so
it might just be the nature of that particular topic. Of course, anything on
that could always be discussed here.

Breaking the Connection Between iPad and iPhone

2014-08-12 Thread Josh
Hello Everyone,

I am wondering how to well as the subject line says break the connection
between the iPad that my son plays on and my iPhone. To explain a little
more the text messages I receive and send pop up on the iPad. Some of the
conversations between my wife and I regarding him does not need to be
discussed in front of him nor where he can freely look at it. Is there any
way to make the iPad quit receiving the messages that I am sending and
receiving without changing the account it is on? I want to keep the same
account so I do not have to repurchase the apps that he loves and are
inaccessible to me. Any help with this will be greatly appreciated.

Re: Breaking the Connection Between iPad and iPhone

2014-08-12 Thread Jonathan Mosen
Hi Josh, you could all continue to use the same Apple ID for the Store, but
each have different Apple IDs for all other services such as iCloud, FaceTime
and iMessage. Or simply create a new Apple ID for your son for these other
services, and sign him in to it.
Alternatively, Apple has announced that when iOS 8 comes out, it will be
introducing a new feature called Family Sharing. This allows multiple Apple IDs
to share the same content. So you could set up a new Apple ID for your son on
his iPad, then next month when iOS 8 comes out, add him to a Family Sharing
group in which you or your wife are the Family Organiser. That way there is o
need to purchase the apps again.
I have an entire chapter on how to do this in my book, iOS 8 Without the Eye,
which will be released the same day iOS 8 is.
For now though, giving your son his own ID for iCloud services while keeping
the existing one for the store will fix the problem.

Re: facebook messanger apps

2014-08-12 Thread Thomas McMahan
If on a computer Adium can do it. Have two Facebook accounts running in it
when I have it going. It will stay on there most of the time, but some of the
people you chat with will come and go because they are using browsers. You
have to enable chat in your account settings.

There use to be an option to select to not synch the various devices and it
was just a matter of going into the device and selecting it. Is that not
still there? It may not be there and that is why I am not finding it or I am

Hi Josh, you could all continue to use the same Apple ID for the Store, but
each have different Apple IDs for all other services such as iCloud,
FaceTime and iMessage. Or simply create a new Apple ID for your son for
these other services, and sign him in to it.

Alternatively, Apple has announced that when iOS 8 comes out, it will be
introducing a new feature called Family Sharing. This allows multiple Apple
IDs to share the same content. So you could set up a new Apple ID for your
son on his iPad, then next month when iOS 8 comes out, add him to a Family
Sharing group in which you or your wife are the Family Organiser. That way
there is o need to purchase the apps again.

I have an entire chapter on how to do this in my book, iOS 8 Without the
Eye, which will be released the same day iOS 8 is.

For now though, giving your son his own ID for iCloud services while keeping
the existing one for the store will fix the problem.

Hi Josh, I don't know what that option might be, but I think the reality is
that iCloud services are becoming increasingly personal. So it makes sense to
have a collective ID for the store, but a separate ID for each individual. You
could always sign him out of iMessage I guess, but then he wouldn't be able to
use the feature at all.

Hello Everyone,

I figured out how to accomplish what I want to do for now. I went into
settings, messages, send and receive and deselected the one that was
connected to my phone number. I have the one that is connected to my e-mail
address selected, but not sure when that would apply when using text message
other than causing a headache for me when trying to forward something to my
e-mail address from text message. Jonathan enlightened me with some ideas
for when he gets a little older, thank you for the ideas.

Iblink Radio new app constantly crashing

Hey guys,

Was thrilled to hear that Iblink radio was finally on the mac, installed it and

Yes, it should, if the TV is on and you've got it receiving the Mini's signal.
You may have to select the right port on your TV if you have a choice of
selectable video sources, but this is TV-specific. Long and short: if people
can see your Mac desktop on the TV, then it's working.

The functionality of iBlink Radio for the Mac is very similar to that on
iOS. For example, you can't use voice chat but you can read forums, etc.

Flash Players

2014-08-12 Thread Josh
Hello Everyone,

My son was playing on the new iMac the other day and said he was unable
to play any games due to there not being a flash player installed. I looked
around the app store on the computer today searching for just flash players
and then searching for Adobe Flash Player. All I come up with is manuals and
texts to purchase. One time I got a Shazam app that popped up in the search
results, but no actual flash player. Will the HTML 5 that Chris talked about
on here the other day work? It was discussed in regards to YouTube so not
sure if it will work or not. Any help with this matter will be greatly
appreciated.

complete form at this time.

Re: Mac Developers List

2014-08-12 Thread Steve Holmes
That's interesting to know. I know some blind folks are doing some
development on the Mac platform and when I get a block of some free
time, I plan to teach myself how to program for that environment. I'm
an experienced programmer on other platforms but I do realize there
are some challenges in working with Xcode. I was thinking that list
would be a good place to get more specific help in our neck of the
woods so to speak. Well, if it is pretty much dead and noone ever
processes the pending subscribe requests, I might as well move on. I
probably will ask any questions I run into there on this list instead
then.

Also, I just learned that iMore has an accessibility forum I might
peak at; that might be another resource for us to work with.

I did a direct subscribe request via email this morning but if that
also falls flat, then I will probably just give up on that list.

Re: Mac Developers List

2014-08-12 Thread Barry Hadder
That list seems to go through fazes where it goes dead for a time then comes
back to life. So it could wake back up at some point.
Xcode 6 is now available to anyone with a free developer account. Beta 5 has
fixed a long standing nasty problem where it would hang if the keyboard focus
was moved around a project window when a storyboard file was open. So it's
really not bad to work with at all at this time.

Xcode6 is still technically under NDA, which is why I expect MV0Dev has been
quiet about it. I figure it'll come back to life once things get released
officially in a month or two.

One shouldn't have to wait 3 months to get subscribed. I had some interest
in iOS stuff that would be relevant for the VI phone list but with the
 track
record of very long waiting periods to subscribe, I just didn't bother. I
figured most new iPhone questions out on my own.
