mailboxes hidden in Mavericks

2014-06-18 Thread Marissa Manzino
Hi all,

I created a mailbox to archive all my work e-mails, but I cannot see it in the
mailbox sidebar. Any ideas? It's like it's hidden from view or something. If
you have any ideas please let me know.

Musically,
Allison

Kudos to Apple Accessibility

2014-06-18 Thread Jenine Stanley
For those who don't think anything ever happens with Apple Accessibility,
here's a happy story.

I recently decided to stop complaining about a couple issues and take them to
Apple Accessibility.

One issue in IOS is the speaking of the word "selected" before some but not all
picker items. This is maddening in long lists of items like times.

They responded immediately asking for an example of an app in which this
occurs. It's easy to find in the calendar app. I reported such and got a very
nice note back stating that the issue has been documented and passed to the
appropriate department.

Yeah, I know, that sounds like lip service but I don't think so. I think it
actually got done.

I also received detailed instructions for how to report the problem of VO
losing focus on some IOS apps. I thought at first it was just the Amazon app
but the more I explored the issue, it seems to happen to a lesser degree in
other apps as well. I'll have more time this weekend to try the instructions
and send a report.

Have I ever heard from Dell when reporting things? Microsoft? rarely and then
it is a cnned response. Yay Apple.

Vulnerability of running Windows on a Mac

2014-06-18 Thread George Cassell
If one were to run Windows on a MacBook Air, would that copy of Windows, and
it's host computer, still be vulnerable to the viruses and other malware that
currently infests the world of Windows computers, thus requiring all that

Using Finder to discover the contents of a CD or DVD

2014-06-18 Thread Mike Busboom
Hi everyone.

Is there a way on the Mac to insert a CD and not have it automatically launch?
I need to explore the contents of several CDs and just using Finder would do
great, provided I could do so without the CD or DVD in question automatically
beginning to play.

Many thanks.

Yes, of course! Windows is still Windows wherever it is! However, if you have
good Windows protection it is not inevitable that you have viruses; you just
have to be vigilant and keep up-to-date. Also remember that one can not afford
to be unprotected on the Mac opperating system either.

Re: Using Finder to discover the contents of a CD or DVD

2014-06-18 Thread Cheryl Homiak
Yes, there is a pane in System Preferences that gives you options for what
happens when you insert various types of cds and dvds. However, at least in
Mavericks, unless you still have a built-in cd/dvd drive, that pane only
appears when you attach an external cd/dvd player/burner, which I just
discovered when trying to answer this question; I had just assumed that pane
was still there. It appears to me that it isn't necessary to actually have
anything in the external drive to make the pane appear but I don't know whether
or not having a cd or dvd in the drive changes the options in the pane; I would
think it doesn't. Of course, if you still hav a computer with a built-in drive,
the pane will be there also. So set your preferences in this pane and then make
sure in finder preferences you have the box checked for cds and dvds to show in
finder and I think this should meet your need.

Hth.

Hi, Cheryl,

First of all, thank you for this information. I'll follow your instructions.

Do you know if there is any command, such as holding down a specific key while
inserting a CD or DVD for just the occasional CD or DVD perusal?

Thanks so much.

You are very welcome! It sure scared me when I went into System Preferences and
couldn't find that particular preference pane!

As far as I know there is no way to do this by holding a key down, etc. It
actually doesn't take long, though, to go in and change your preferences though
I realize it is slightly inconvenient.

Good iPhone app for recording audio snippets

I want to record short guitar riffs and progressions on the iPhone, and then be
able to easily play them back - perhaps looping them if desired. Kind of like

Re: Vulnerability of running Windows on a Mac

2014-06-18 Thread 'Chris Blouch' via MacVisionaries
More specifically, while a virtualized instance of Windows is just as
suceptible to viruses and Windows running on a real box, how that
overflows to your Mac depends on how much access to your Mac you give
Windows. I don't give Windows direct access to my Mac's drive as usually
being able to cut and paste between the two worlds does what I need. You
can also set it up where you can copy files from the Mac to the PC and
back. While PC viruses in files moved to your Mac won't effect your Mac,
you might pass them along to another Windows user who will care. Also,
while few voiceover users will care about Office for Mac because of its
near total inaccessibility, any Word macro viruses are, by definition,
cross-platform. So if you do use Word on the Mac you probably should
have your files scanned just in case.

Re: Selecting Items to add to a playlist in the new iTunes

2014-06-18 Thread Tim Kilburn
Hi,

So far, the only thing you can do would be to use the VO selection method of
VO-cmd-return on multiple items. This though, would be extremely tedious if
you had to use this method for large numbers of songs. This sort of thing has
happened before in iTunes and has been fixed in later releases. It's just too
bad that whatever developer(s) who work on iTunes keep breaking it in this
manner.

enough that he had us do a screen-sharing session, because he didn't have
access to a Braille display. We concluded that the only way to edit Braille
commands was by using command-b first, but he offered to put in my suggestion
for using the Braille display to edit commands as a feature request. I
definitely wouldn't have felt comfortable initiating this with most other
companies. This is the main reason I have Apple products.

I recently decided to stop complaining about a couple issues and take them to

One issue in IOS is the speaking of the word "selected" before some but not all
picker items. This is maddening in long lists of items like times.

They responded immediately asking for an example of an app in which this
occurs. It's easy to find in the calendar app. I reported such and got a very
nice note back stating that the issue has been documented and passed to the
appropriate department.

Yeah, I know, that sounds like lip service but I don't think so. I think it

I also received detailed instructions for how to report the problem of VO

tutorials for VoiceOver

2014-06-18 Thread Juliette

Hi all,
I don't actually have my Mac yet, but I was wondering if there were any
other resources I should consider, besides the $20 textbook by Janet
Ingber that I just purchased from National Braille Press. I have also
read some of the Getting Started with VoiceOver and Mavericks that is
featured on the System Access Mobile Network, to try and familiarize
myself with VoiceOver. Are there any other resources I can sign up for?
I do know about the Mac Masters series through Fedora Outlier, but
since I don't have the Mac yet, I was looking for any other books I
could be reading up on beforehand. Thanks so much.

Juliette

over drive books

2014-06-18 Thread May McDonald Homuth
Hi there everyone.

I have a program called Macsome Audiobook
Converter that works great for audible books, but from what I can tell it
doesn't work for over drive books. That is unless I'm overlooking something.

Does anyone know of a program that can convert these books like Macsome
Audiobook
Converter can do for audible books?

Re: over drive books

2014-06-18 Thread Teresa Cochran
I don't know which converter to use, but most Overdrive books are wma Windows
Media files, so you'll need one that will convert from that format. Also, there
is some sort of DRM protection on them that makes them time-limited.

I made a mistake when posting the command for opening folders. It's
option-down-arrow and option-up-arrow. To open a single file, it's
command-down-arrow.

Hi,

Works fine for me. I tried it in Icon view and List view with cmd-o and it

As I recall, you can burn them onto a CD, but that makes it an audio CD, or
should I say *many CDS, because audio CDS take up much more room than mp3 ones.

Comparing VO Keystrokes in OS X and iOS?

2014-06-18 Thread Teresa Cochran
Hi, all,

If my poor old late 2009 Mac Mini doesn't have a fried logic board, I'll
replace the hard drive so it can limp along for another year. If it's destined

it. I use a Braille display and the virtual keyboard with my iPod 5th gen and
iOS currently. I'm wondering if a lot of the basic VO functions work the same
with the same keystrokes, such as opening apps, text selection, etc.?

Thanks,
Teresa

Darn overdrive books. They should be as easy to work with as audible, lol.

Yes, I know what you mean. Even Audible would be an imfrovement. It would be

Selecting up with option-shift-up arrow doesn't work for me either. Couldn't
get VO-return to work either. It worked for the first couple of lines and then
I lost the selection. Haven't tried extensively with the VO-return method
though.

Actually, I stand corrected. Option-shift-up arrow is working for me, though it
sounds like it doesn't work. I get the same sound of losing the selection, but
when I press command-c and then paste somewhere else, the copy and paste works.

Re: Kudos to Apple Accessibility

Hi,
I am just flat we have the level of structure in accessibility that we have in
ios. I love the support, although I don't like that I have to make a phone call
just to set up a rescue email address to reset my account questions. But over
all, I love apple customer support and the knowledge that apple accessibility
has about VoiceOver and how it all works. I've never once had to contact them,
but the storied I've heard have been nothing but great in telling of apples
commitment to accessibility. And while I still have problems with activating
again my book share account with mobile safari, I still love VoiceOver.

Re: Comparing VO Keystrokes in OS X and iOS?

2014-06-18 Thread Alex Hall
Many do, and the non-VO keystrokes for navigating and manipulating text are
identical. Basic navigation (vo-left/right/space) and reading (vo-a/w/c) are
the same, but the iOS platform lacks many advanced keystrokes. For instance,
hotspots/webstpots, vi-key lock, focus/cursor/window information, etc.

Thanks, Alex. My thought is that the touch-screen feedback will for the most
part make up for the lack of window information. Between the touch-screen,
Braille display, and keyboard, it seems like I'd be comfortable with the amount

Re: Comparing VO Keystrokes in OS X and iOS?

2014-06-18 Thread Ryan Mann
A lot of the IOS key strokes are similar. For example, you can hit Left and
Right Arrow together to turn Quick Nav on and Off. You can hit Left and Up
Arrow together to switch between rotor settings then Up/Down Arrow to move to
the next or previous rotor item. One thing you can't do on IOS is hit
Command+Tab to switch between open applications. If you are in an edit
box, you can hit Option+Shift+Arrow key to select text just like on Mac OS.

How to remove write-protection from my USB-stick or flash-drive, whatever they call them these days

2014-06-18 Thread Helena Fehr
Hi, all!
I've got a 32 gigabyte flash-drive I'm tyring to use on my Mac, it's one of
those Fat32 format ones, so I cna use it on my windows and on my Mac computers,
but I keep getting an error that it's write protected, and that I should remove
the write protection from teh flash-drive before I can use it again. I've
googled it, and found oodles of stuff to do it on windows, but the only way I
could find to do it wan't accessible with my screenreader. Can anyone tell me
if there is a way to do it on my Mac?
And no, I've heard that some flash-drives have a switch to protect and
unprotect them; my flash-drive is not one of those.
Thanks!
You can email me offline or on Mac Visionarries, though emailing me personally
will help more, otherwise I may not get your responses.

God Bless!!!
Helena

May the Lord bless you and protect you; may the Lord's face radiate with joy
because of you; may He be gracious to you, show you His favour, and give you
His peace (Numbers 6:24-26).
In Jesus' Name. Amen.

Re: Comparing VO Keystrokes in OS X and iOS?

2014-06-18 Thread Alex Hall
One consideration is that, aside from battery life and a few iPad-only apps,
the iPad offers no significant advantages (that I can think of) over the iPod.
At the least, they are identical in terms of VO keystrokes, so hook a keyboard
to the iPod and see what you think. I believe you said you have an iPod - if
not, ignore me.

No, command-tab won't work, but go-h is your home button; press h twice while
holding down the vo keys and you are in the App Switcher. It is kind of similar
to the Application Chooser on the Mac. Certainly it is far less convenient, but
the option is there.

I like having a full computer for apps the iOS platform can't run (Xcode, some
nice Youtube apps, etc) but those aren't a concern for you. However, someone
mentioned external drives, and that's a great point. Also, iOS lacks
commanders, so no assigning frequently used actions or even ApleScripts to
gestures or keystrokes. Overall, because of the shortcut key support in apps
Not necessarily in VO) I find the Mac or a Windows machine more efficient to
use. That's just me though.

Finally, the new Macbook Airs, and even the Pros from the brief times I've felt
them, have very little in the way of vents or other holes. They use solid state
drives, so have no moving internal parts except for some amazingly quiet fans
you really can't access (the Airs seem to have no fans, but I could be wrong).
Debris, then, is really not as much of a concern, and of course they make a
myriad of cases for all these devices.
