Re: How do I play this interview?

2014-06-10 Thread Anne Robertson
hello Max,

Having opened the page, use the Web rotor and go to Links. Type MP4, press
Return and navigate right until you hear HTML5 and do VO-Space. It should start
playing.

Alternatively, you could download one of the MP4 files.

Cheers,

Anne

Bluetooth Barcode Scanners and Digit-Eyes

2014-06-10 Thread Mike Busboom
Hi.

Sometimes when I use Digit-Eyes, it takes me forever to find the barcode. For
me, this greatly reduces the utility of a program that I think is really good.

I have been looking at bluetooth barcode scanners, but I haven't purchased
anything yet.

Any thoughts?

Kindest regards and thanks in advance,

Mike

Hi Maria,

Try Miro Video converter. It's fairly accessible and will convert between

Re: Bluetooth Barcode Scanners and Digit-Eyes

2014-06-10 Thread Mike Busboom
Thank you for supplying this link, Isaac. Have you used this particular
scanner with Digit-Eyes and if so, how well does it work?

I guess what I am really asking is if it is possible, in principle, to use such
scanners with Digit-Eyes.

On a similar subject, is it possible to use such devices with other
blindness-related apps such as TapTapSee as well.

Thanks,

Mike

Hi,

You will need to use the function key as well, that's the one on the bottom
left of your laptop keyboard. Sounds as if in your Keyboard system

Google chrome, ChromeVox, and VoiceOver

fresh install versus update

So, Ray mentioned something that gave me pause.

I'd love to hear pros and cons for both approaches as I'm fairly new to this
operating system and came in with Mavericks already installed.

What is the difference, besides the process of course, of updating to 10.10 and
doing a fresh install?

I know one would backup the files and such to someplace like DropBox or an
external drive but from an operations standpoint, what do I gain or lose from
each method?

I'll be very interested to follow this one.

The difference between doing a update and a fresh install is that if you update

330 bucks. There are two versions of this scanner. Make sure you get the I
version. The standard version pares with the iphone, but only as a HID device.
Essentially it acts like a keyboard and that is it. The I version is fully
intergrated with digit-eyes. They are the same price too.

I have a sheet here that lets you adjust the scan time which I can send you
once you have your kdc. Default is two seconds and for me, I've found that I
need a bit mor time than that usually.

Apple’s Swift is instant hit among top programming languages

by MacDailyNews

[cfsp key="adsense_336x280"]"Apple's new Swift language, featuring
modern-day development capabilities for building OS X and iOS
applications, is likely to find swift, high placement in assessments of
programming language popularity," Paul Krill reports for InfoWorld.

"Both the Tiobe and PyPL indexes already have plans to accommodate
Swift," Krill reports. "'A preview shows that its first rating will
probably in the top 20 by [the July Tiobe index]. Swift is a natural and
long-awaited next step of Apple,' this month's Tiobe index description
said. The monthly index, which gauges language popularity via a formula
assessing searches on languages on sites like Google, Wikipedia, and
YouTube, has shown Swift's predecessor, the Objective-C language,
ranking not far behind C and Java in language popularity in recent years."

"In the rival PyPL index, which looks at how often language tutorials
are searched on in Google, a representative already has done a brief
assessment on Swift," Krill reports. "'Yes, it would come in ninth
position, based on the first week of data since its announcement,' said
Pierre Carbonnelle, who oversees the index... With a 6.6 percent share,
Objective-C ranks eighth on the PyPL index, which notes the language has
been climbing in popularity."

[cfsp key="adsense_336x280"]"Back in September we reported that Apple
was developing a feature to help users find their parked cars for its
in-house Maps app," Mike Beasley reports for 9to5Mac.

"While that feature wasn’t officially debuted during WWDC last week, new
icons found inside the Maps application indicate that the feature was in
development at some point and is likely still be worked on," Beasley
reports. "As we originally noted: 'Sources say that Apple is testing a
tool for its Maps app that, with the M7 chip, could analyze when your
car is parked. When you park your car, the iPhone will register the
car’s location.'"

Beasley reports, "Apple’s latest mapping software contains six images
dedicated to the parked car location feature, each a purple pin with a
car-shaped glyph."

Apple patent details iWatch-enabled weight training tracker

by MacDailyNews

[cfsp key="adsense_336x280"]"Apple on Tuesday was granted a patent for a
weightlifting tracking system that uses a standalone sensor to transmit
metrics to a remote display, which in some cases include a wristwatch,"
Mikey Campbell reports for AppleInsider.

"The U.S. Patent and Trademark Office granted Apple U.S. Patent No.
8,749,380 for a 'Shoe wear-out sensor, body-bar sensing system, unitless
activity assessment and associated methods' is actually a continuation
of multiple patents describing a fitness-related patent ecosystem,"
Campbell reports. "As granted, the patent covers a system in which a
sensor-laden device attaches itself to a weightlifting bar and counts
and displays repetitions. Unique to Apple's invention is the inclusion
of a watch for remote readings, possibly hinting at a future or intended
use case scenario for the company's much-rumored iWatch."

"Apple has yet to announce an iWatch, though many expect the tech giant
to introduce a wearable device of some kind later this year. With the
new HealthKit framework and corresponding Health app for iOS 8, which
can collect raw data from external devices, Apple is making a push into
fitness and health-tracking devices," Campbell reports. "As for its own
hardware, the latest rumors point to a form-fitting wristwatch device
with curved OLED screen."

Two arrested in Russia after confessing to Apple ID ransom scheme

by MacDailyNews

[cfsp key="adsense_336x280"]"Russian authorities say two people from
Moscow have confessed to a 'ransomware' attack on a number of Apple
device owners, mainly in Australia, during May," Charles Arthur reports
for The Guardian.

"An official statement on the Russian Ministry of Internal Affairs
website says that the duo, who live in the capital, hatched the scheme,
which they carried out first by creating a 'phishing' site to collect
iCloud logins, and then locking the devices," Arthur reports. "People in
Australia woke up to find a message on their iPhone, iPad or Mac saying
"Device hacked by Oleg Pliss" and that to unlock it they should pay a
ransom of $100. Some users in New Zealand, the US and UK were also
affected. Apple had said only that the attack was not a break-in to its
iCloud system, and that the affected users' login details must have been
compromised elsewhere. It has not released figures on how many people
were affected, though data from Australia and Apple's discussions boards
seem to suggest that dozens were hit by it"

"The two perpetrators - who were not named, but who were said to have
been born in 1991 and 1998, which would make them about 23 and 16 - also
confessed to another scheme, where they would connect a new device to a
hijacked iCloud account, and then use it to acquire large amounts of
media such as music and shows – which they then advertised for sale
online. One of those arrested had previously been tried on hacking
charges, the ministry said," Arthur reports. "Russia has been a centre
for a number of criminal hackers, with organised crime sometimes
involved in schemes to break computer security systems around banks and
other high-profile organisations."

*Read more in the full article here

*MacDailyNews Take: *The problem was/is that some people use one
password for everything they do online and, when one thing gets
compromised (eBay, for example), everything is accessible to criminals.

Use unique passwords and Apple's Keychain Access
 and iCloud Keychain

to create and manage them. When used properly, it works like a dream.

by MacDailyNews

[cfsp key="adsense_336x280"]"Apple appears to be removing many of the
popular music downloading apps from the iOS App Store, including those
that allowed users to obtain files from third-party file sharing sites,"
Richard Padilla reports for MacRumors. "The move is likely in an attempt
to push the iTunes Store and iTunes Radio, as well as to clean up the
App Store ahead of an overhaul in iOS 8."

"A search for the term 'music download' in the App Store displays a
message inviting users to try out iTunes Radio," Padilla reports.
"Previously, the same search would show results for a number of apps
that could download music and audio files from websites such as
Soundcloud and YouTube, with many appearing on the App Store's 'Top
Charts' section."

Padilla reports, "Some developers have also noted that Apple has asked
them to remove audio downloading functionalities from their app, perhaps
to prevent potential piracy."

Re: fresh install versus update

2014-06-10 Thread Alex Hall
Generally, a clean install is not required. Only if your Mac starts doing odd
things or not working properly should you do this. Some people do a clean
install for every major upgrade, but I say if you don't *need* to go through
the hassle, don't bother. In other words, try a regular upgrade first. If weird
things start happening, and no one else is having the same problems, and
regular troubleshooting (permissions repair, PRAM reset, etc) don't fix it,
only then do a clean install.

Apple removing music downloading apps from App Store

by MacDailyNews

Well unless the list owner says to stop, why stop? But providing a

get it themselves.

From what I read, some of the news should be of interest to the list
anyway.

Re: embossing from a Mac?

2014-06-10 Thread Robert C
I am waiting for Duxbury to port DBT over to Mac. And if that
version uses Microsoft Word, which supposedly will be accessible on the
Mac, it cannot be soon enough tho I may need the time to save up the
pennies for both. :)

But if there are other alternatives that would work, I would try those.

Re: embossing from a Mac?

2014-06-10 Thread Cheryl Homiak
I use an Index printer and Index has an application and driver. I use liblouis
and liblouisutdml for translation but I also do a lot of editing along with
that; there is also a louis program for the Mac but at least for the Spanish
there were problems with it last time I tried it but the English may work fine.
I'm just doing text files though, not Word files, but I don't need that for
what I am doing right now anyway. If you have an Index printer, a quick google
should bring up information as this was posted on the macvoiceover list and I
think some other lists a little over a year ago.

Re: fresh install versus update

2014-06-10 Thread 'Chris Blouch' via MacVisionaries
I can't recall the last time I did a clean install. Then again, I've not
had much trouble with my Macs. I just checked my preferences folder and
I files in there going back to 2007, which is probably the last time I
did a clean install. Guess I should delete some of that cruft some time
but disk space is cheap compared to the time it would take me to clean
house. If you had a mansion with a million beds, would you ever make
yours or just sleep in another one the next night?

Bluetooth Braille Displays

2014-06-10 Thread Daniel Smith

Hi everyone,

I'm in the research phase of purchasing a bluetooth braille display, and
I'm looking for advice from my fellow visionaries. I've never owned a
braille display, so I'm not too sure which models and brands are most
reliable, popular, etc.

What would you recommend for one whose primary use will be reading Braille
in other languages (I'm a biblical studies student at Yale) ). I'd like it
to be bluetooth so I don't need to deal with the additional wires, and I
don't mind it being a bit larger, since I'll be using it primarily at home.

Any and all advice is welcome.

Regards,
Daniel

Re: Google chrome, ChromeVox, and VoiceOver

2014-06-10 Thread 'Chris Blouch' via MacVisionaries
That seems to be the big drawback with ChromeVox. Not that it isn't
usable and such but that it only works inside the Chrome browser. So
anytime you want to do anything anywhere else in your computer you have
to go back to voiceover and switch mental models of keystrokes and
navigation. Not sure it's worth the hassle just for a different
experience inside the Chrome browser.

Re: Bluetooth Braille Displays

2014-06-10 Thread Brent Harding
The Focus 40 Blue is a pretty good display. It does both bluetooth and USB for
if yo were going to use it with the computer as well. Also, they have recently
added the ability to switch between the two so you could go from the phone to
the PC and back easily. I think the big issue might be whether or not voiceover
supports using braille in other languages more so than the display, as I would
assume all languages still use the same 6 or 8 dots of braille.

Re: deleting a table from a pages document

Hi,

When navigating through your Pages document, VO will announce when you come
upon a table and say something like Table 1. This should mean that focus is on
that table, so, just hit your Delete key and it should go away.

The embossers from Index work well. Your biggest problem, however, is not the

editing a bulleted list in Pages

2014-06-10 Thread Jenine Stanley
I was editing a document my husband sent me. It was a Word .docx file but came
into Pages OK.

He had a large bulleted list of things and each was several sentences long
within its bullet point. As I tried to edit, each word came out as "list
selected" or something like that before it said the word. There was a lot of
unnecessary verbiage before each word which made editing tedious. Possible but
tedious.

Any thoughts on how to edit such lists? I'm almost sure you guys were talking
about this earlier last week. I should just read every post because right after
you discuss something, I usually end up having to do it. :)

Re: embossing from a Mac?

2014-06-10 Thread Georgina Joyce
Hello,

I have just got an Index Basic going on my Mac.

Firstly I needed a USB to serial lead. I understand that there are 2 chipsets
supported. I was lucky that one that I had for some time was a supported one. I
had to find a Prolific driver and install it. It wasn't difficult. It generates
a /dev/cu.usbserial device which you send the braille for embossing.

Not sure if I needed the Index driver too but I installed it.

I had used nfbtrans on a linux command line so grabbed that. However, it was
not going to work on the Mac. There is a Mac patch copy floating about which I
eventually found. This works OK but is limited.

Then there is Louis a GUI accessible program. This works too. However, only
with text files. RTF and HTML etc files just seem to crash and don't work for
me. It does enable the translation of different braille tables.

So check out nfbtrans if you don't mind working from the command line or Louis
if you want a GUI interface.

So, because you didn't see the point, someone else is supposed to modify their
behavior? In case you didn't catch that, the emphasis was on the pronoun
"you."

Seriously,

Re: Bluetooth Braille Displays

2014-06-10 Thread Eugenia Firth
Hi there
If I had it to do over again, I would wait a while before getting any of the
focuses. First of all, you have to use Windows to update them. That may not be
a problem for you, but it is a pain for me. Second of all, right now some of us
are experiencing really big problems. Focus display with getting the focuses to
pair with the Mac. I hear that is going to be changed when next update comes
around, and I sure hope so.
I do not have the same problems with my Braille edge 40. I had a problem one
time, and that took about two weeks to resolve. Just my two cents on the matter.

Sincerely,
Gigi

Re: Bluetooth Barcode Scanners and Digit-Eyes

Hi there
I like Digit-Eyes, but I have found that for some things TapTapSee works
better. For example, if I just want to find out what's in a can of food, or
even a package, I found the TapTapSee is faster. Would this work for your
friend? That would allow him to be a lot more flexible insofar as accuracy is
concerned. Then he could just put the camera over whatever he wanted to know
about.

Re: Bluetooth Braille Displays

2014-06-10 Thread Brent Harding
They might've screwed it up a little in IOS 7. It did work good with IOS 6
though. I would've assumed that most of them used windows-based firmware
updaters, but the Braille Edge might have a way to load it by putting a file on
the SD card with it. The one issue I did have is that if the phone goes to
sleep, the bluetooth can't wake it, but that may be the way Apple devices are
in general.

   Hi there
If I had it to do over again, I would wait a while before getting any of the
I had a problem
one time, and that took about two weeks to resolve. Just my two cents on the

It would be nice to have some clarification on this matter. The one that now
seems to think it's okay to post from MacDailyationews is the one who

Thanks in advance.

Re: embossing from a Mac?

2014-06-10 Thread Cheryl Homiak
I thought about replying within the message but decided that might not work so
well for people who are trying to read fast. So I'll address each point here at
the top.

1. My cable came with the Index basic and I didn't have to go find a prolific
driver and cable. Maybe that is part of what the driver and application do
though I do also happen to have prolific cables because of using brltty. Maybe
it's been fixed but from Lion on, sometimes the official prolific driver caused
problems; for instance, unplugging it without killing brltty first caused
spontaneous reboot of my computer and I learned by searching online that this
was not a brltty problem but was related to the prolific driver's interaction
with the OS. And on one of my computers, installing the prolific driver did not
result in a cu.usbserial or any other cu. device in /dev. So I looked around
online and found that somebody had done a driver, though I had to directly
install the kernel extension instead of just running an installer. The naming
ends up being different from what the official driver did but it does start
with a cu prefix. Btw I think that keyspan cables are no longer useable at all;
I have a few of those too. The change in driver solved both issues. I'll post
the links in case anybody needs them. But because I kind of went down a rabbit
trail here let me again say that the cable that came with the Index Basic I
have worked out of the box for me along with the driver and application.

2. Actually, I used to compile nfbtrans on my Mac in terminal just as I did in
linux. I didn't actually use it for embossing but it could be done. I think I
had help in doing a patch at one time for the Mac but I don't know if I still
have it or if it would still work - this was a long time ago.

3. In addition to louis, which was done by Greg Kearney in order to implement
liblouis on the Mac,, there are liblouis and liblouisutdml, which I use on the
command line after compiling and installing. There are a few little quirks but
I was able to install them on the Mac. I also now have them installed on an old
powerpc Mac mini which I have turned into a debian linux machine. Unless Greg
has fixed the problem in louis,, the right tables aren't being loaded for
Spanish - I don't know about other languages. Part of the problem had to do
with UTF8 character sets but I would have to go back and look at my notes and
email exchanges with John Boyer and the related email lists to really give an
accurate explanation. The result was that most of my accents were not being
translated if I tried to use Louis but I would instead get these codes offset
by single quotes if I remember correctly.

3. I think that somewhere with using liblouis and liblouisutdml and maybe other
components, there is a program for doing rtf but I haven't ever tried it. While
I do use liblouis and company successfully, it is not automatic conversion by
any means. I have to do a lot of formatting within the text file to get what I
want in the braille file and even then I have to do editing in the braille file
too. Some of this may be my ignorance as to the proper way to do things but
just be warned if you use it, there is definitely work and problem-solving
involved.

Hth.

Hi Kawal, if your Focus Blue was new last year when you bought it, you can
update it. The only ones you can't update are the ones with whiz wheels, and
they stopped being sold in 2012.
Power 1 2 3 is a really cool feature for seamlessly switching between a
computer connected via USB and an iDevice connected with Bluetooth. Makes

Re: Bluetooth Barcode Scanners and Digit-Eyes

2014-06-10 Thread erik burggraaf
Hi Mike, It's as I said. The kdc is fully intergrated with digit-eyes. Once
pared it beeps the bar codes and instantly finds the information directly in
digit-eyes.

Most other bar code readers act as a HID device. That means the I device
treats them as a bluetooth keyboard. The digit-eyes web site can use them, but
HID devices are not intergrated into the digit-eyes app.

I have only one issue with the kdc and that is it frequently has to be repared
with the I device. I had planned to work on this, but I haven't had the time
and now I'm going to lose access to the equipment.

Re: Bluetooth Braille Displays

2014-06-10 Thread erik burggraaf
Hi Daniel,

I've done some very in depth comparisons of the various braille displays that I
have experience with. You can find them in the archive and most of the info is
still current.

I really like the braille edge and the brailliant BI, finding the build quality
to be very high and feel of the cells and control surfaces to be very
comfortable.

I despise the alva BC640 because I have ceen so many of them fail and because I
don't like the feel.

I don't mind the focus blue, but have only provided training on two units. One
went back for cell repair three months out of the box. The other wend back for
cell repair directly out of the box and now six months down it is going back in
because the keyboard won't work. So, I am none too happy with focus right now.

Has Anyone Tried This Kids' Game, Ballyland? Where to Find Executable File in Demo?

2014-06-10 Thread Teresa Cochran
I was poking around, and found this game: ballyland.com . It's a game for kids
with print disabilities, including visual impairment. there is a free demo, but
the folder seems to have an app alias with no app. Anyone else get this to
work? I'm stumped.
