ITunes wish list issue solved

2014-01-28 Thread Ray Foret Jr
Hi,

You may recall I could not make my wish list appear from the library view the
other day. I found out what was wrong. I did not wait long enough after
ITunes loaded before I tried it. You need to wait for about a minute or so for
everything to load after launching ITunes. After launching Itunes and waiting
about a minute or so, The wish lists will appear in your library if you press
the list button just to the left of the ITunes store button.

the contacts app

2014-01-28 Thread Scott Berry
I am trying to make sure all my contact have the correct info. But once I am
done with the card I am working on it seems as though the only choose I have is
to close all Windows with Command W. Is there a way to get back in to the list
of contacts so I can continue working down the list?

I've always done command W to close the window that you are editing. I hope you
know you can do command shift l to edit a card.

If anyone knows how to get back to the contact list, I too would like to know.

Thanks.

It appears to be downloaded. Other movies in the cloud have a download button

I never open a separate window to edit a contact. I usually use Contacts in
Group view mode, if that makes any difference. This gives you a table of groups
on the left, the contact info area in the middle, and the list of contacts on
the right. Once I select a contact I press the edit button and then interact
with the contact info area to edit the info. Once I'm done I press the done
checkbox and move back to the list of contacts. It is probably not the fastest
way, but it works fine and this might be the sort of thing you're looking fore.

The paragraph style button is the second item in the formatter. It's the one

checked.

I don't think you can. Time machine will back up in the background, all the

Find a contact, cmd-l to edit. Once done, stop interacting twice, vi-right
three times (at least on my system) and uncheck the 'done" checkbox. Then go
find another contact and repeat. As Nick said, this is in group view, the only
view I have ever used. In fact, I didn't know other views existed. :)

Response from Tax Act

2014-01-28 Thread Eugenia Firth
Hi guys
I have an update on continuing grief filing taxes this year. I just received an
email from Tax Act that will not please you guys, and I certainly found it
unpleasing. I sent a rather sharp email back.

I was told that good old Tax Act does not have resources to test all screen
readers and that they could not provide me support. I old them the IRS
should require it, and that as for the Maccording, they didn't even have to buy
the screen reader.

I am going to wait for the braille copies from the Alternative Media Center for
my credits because I discovered that, even though I figured out a way to get
data in here and save the file without crashing VoiceOver, I haven't figured
out how to get the Continue button to come up for calling up an existing file
that has been encrypted. I tried everything I could think of. So now I am going
to call up PDF Pen and correct my forms and wait for the braille copies to
finish it.

Regards,
Gigi

You can't specify that, unfortunately. You could opt for a disk cloner like

HI Jürgen,
Select the cells you wish to make popup menus or checkboxes;
Jump to the formatter with VO-J;
Select the Cell radio button, navigate to the cell formatter scroll area and
interact with it;

Update on my laggy Mac situation

2014-01-28 Thread Alex Hall
Hi all,
First, some comments on how things have been after my complete re-install
Sunday. I waited until now because I was copying data back from Time Machine,
letting Box and Dropbox sync their data with my hard drive, setting up my
first-ever Windows VM and having that sync with my cloud services, and letting
Spotlight index everything.

My Mac, I'm very sad to say, feels no faster. Apps still take a while to open,
or open immediately but are busy for a while. Mail messages usually open
immediately, but some can still take a long time (plaintext ones, so it's not
an html rendering thing). VO has hardly bee choppy so far, so that's something,
but nothing says that problem can't come back - it was never a constant issue
in the first place, so it may well return soon.

I am at a loss. I looked at my Activity Monitor, and saw that Mail had written
1.07gb of data, the largest amount written as far as I can tell. That isn't
surprising, though, as that was likely when it was pulling all my mail for the
first time since the re-install. All other apps seem normal, so there appears
to be no excessive data usage. Even before the update, after I dumped
Soundflower, nothing was making excessive use of the CPU, so that was not the
problem. If anyone has suggestions, I'd love to hear them. Short of a new
machine or downgrading to 10.8, I am out of ideas.

Creating Folders for iCloud Documents

2014-01-28 Thread Nicholas Parsons
Hi all,

I'm enjoying using the new iWork documents in iCloud as they sync well with my
iOS devices. However, I'd like to create some folders for my iCloud documents.

>From what I've read, one simply drags one document on to another to create a
>folder in iCloud. I can't seem to get this to work with VoiceOver.

The main problem seems to be that something is blocking the mouse. When I bring
the mouse and check its position with VO-F5, my Mac just beeps at me which is
usually the sign that something's wrong, and usually means the mouse is out of
action. In this state, VO-comma does not work, and neither does VO-Shift-Space.
I tried bringing the current window to the front with VO-F2, and hiding all
other apps with command-option-h, but neither of these made any difference.

Any ideas? Is there a work around for VoiceOver users by any chance?

Cheers,
Nic

Re: Update on my laggy Mac situation

2014-01-28 Thread Teresa Cochran
I hate to be a wet blanket, but this is an honest question. How old is your
hard drive? My Mac mini became very laggy and choppy for about two weeks before
the hard drive completely went, and I had to have it replaced. You might do a
disc check and see if things are going ok with it. If there are problems, you
might try a disc repair.

as for apps opening slowly, I think this is a bug with Mavericks, but it
doesn’t happen with all users. I have this issue myself, and so do others
running various Mac desktops.

You might try full screen. I’ve found this makes using the mouse easier, since

An accessible text editor for programming

2014-01-28 Thread Otto Hylli
Hello
I am looking for an accessible text editor for programming purposes for OS X
(mountain Lion to be exact). Something like PsPad, context or Programmers
notepad on Windows. It can be free or paid. Does anybody have any suggestions?
For example Smultron 5 available from the mac app store looks good but I don't
know if it is accessible And because it is not free I don't want to just try it.

Re: Update on my laggy Mac situation

2014-01-28 Thread Alex Hall
My Mac is from August of 2011. I have used it heavily ever since, though mostly
in Windows for the first year. There is a Mac Mini downstairs that is from
2007, and it is still going strong. In fact, interns of launching apps, it is
faster than my Mavericks machine. This has been going on since I installed
Mavericks, not a day before, and that was back in November. Hopefully, if my
hard drive were going to kick the bucket, it would have done so by now.

It's interesting that slow-to-launch apps is a problem on others' systems as
well. Here's hoping that 10.9.2 will fix this problem.

Why not use Xcode? It only supports C-based languages, but if you are looking
to program for the Mac, it has everything you need. For other languages, look
at Eclipse. I have no idea if it is accessible, but it is free, so worth a

This may be another one you may not want to invest the time, but here goes.
Ifyour Mac was running well using Mountain Lion, is it worth it to roll back to
that OS? I have had 2 tech people at my local Apple store stating that they
haven't yet upgraded their Macs at home and are still using ML. Just another
thought to consider.

Thanks for the suggestions. I am planning to program in Python and may be also
HTML and javascript so Xcode is not for me. Eclipse has some plugins for Python
development and actually I use it (for java programming) at work on a Windows
machine. However I am not really looking for an IDE but something lighter i.e.
a text editor with some nice features for programmers like go to line and
correct handling of indentations which are important in Python.

Re: Creating Folders for iCloud Documents

2014-01-28 Thread Tim Kilburn
Hi Nick,

1. Go to the Finder.
2. Up to the Go menu.
3. VO down to Library, let go of the VO keys then press return. You must hold
down the VO keys in order that the Library choice is available.
4. Navigate to the Mobile Documents folder, open it.
5. Find the com~apple~Pages folder, open it.
6. Open the Documents folder.
7. cmd-shift-n to create a new folder and name it whatever you want.
8. Move the items you want in each folder with the cmd-c and cmd-option-v
commands.
9. Close the window.

All done. It should be fine for the Mac now but it’s a little confusing when
using your iDevice but not too bad. For example, when in Pages on the iPhone,
you need to double-tap on the “Rename item” to access the folder contents. So,
if I create a folder called Safety, double-tapping on the name Safety won’t do
what you want but double-tapping on the Rename Safety item will reveal its
contents at which time you can double-tap on the name of a specific file to
open it. A little awkward but doable.

HTH.

Re: a question about Time Machine

2014-01-28 Thread Chris Blouch
Just a slight clarification - TM backs up any changed files once an
hour. There are third-party preference panes like Time Machine Scheduler
which will let you set up different intervals or to not run between
certain hours:

http://www.klieme.com/TimeMachineScheduler.html
Donationware
https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/time-machine-backup-scheduler/id668331139?mt=12
$4

although I haven't played with them. If you don't mind using the
terminal and are on OSX prior to 10.8 you can change the default value
of the time between executions by doing:

sudo defaults write /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.apple.backupd-auto
StartInterval -int XXX

where XXX is replaced by the number of seconds between backup attempts.
So if you want only once a day you could set XXX to 86400.

For newer versions of OSX you'll have to edit the plist file located at

/System/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.apple.backupd-auto

and change the default 3600 to whatever timing you actually want. At
least I couldn't figure out how to access the Interval value using
defaults write.

Re: a question about Time Machine

2014-01-28 Thread Chris Blouch
Hmm. Seems like plistbuddy should do the job for newer versions of OSX.
Something like

/usr/libexec/PlistBuddy -c "set :LaunchEvents:com.apple.time:Backup\
Interval:Interval 3600"
/System/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.apple.backupd-auto.plist

where 3600 is replaced with the time delay you want. Worth giving it a
try. You'll have to be root or use the sudo command for it to stick.

trying to get to recovery mode

2014-01-28 Thread eric oyen
hello everyone,

I am at a loss on how to get into recovery mode.

I know you are supposed to hold down the option key on boot, but beyond that, I
don't know which entry to arrow to (non speaking interface at that level).
anyone have suggestions or a more direct keyboard shortcut to allow me to boot
into it directly?

I believe the keys are cmd-r. Hold that as your Mac boots and it will be in
recovery mode. VO will say something, but you need to hit cmd-f5 to get vo to

Re: trying to get to recovery mode

2014-01-28 Thread Daniel McGee
What you should do is once you hear the Mac’s chine sound issue the keystroke
Command R for a few seconds then let go.
Now wait a while i’d say 30sec to a minute and then issue the toggle command to
turn on Voiceover which is Command F5. Voiceover should start talking and you
should now be in recovery mode.

I hope this helps

Re: A very frustrating discovery regarding playing movies downloaded from iTunes

2014-01-28 Thread Tim Kilburn
Hi,

It looks like they’ve changed some things around a bit or I’ve got some things
backwards. When the movie is downloaded, you are correct in that it only shows
the versions of HD available. If the movie is up in the Cloud,, that is, it's
not yet downloaded, the SD version is available in the Video Quality menu. So,
you could either stream it from the Cloud or download the SD version and see if
that works through the projector. I’m surprised that other digital movie
providers do not have some sort of DRM restricting this as well. The license
agreement says that the movie is for personal use only, thus, this was a method
of restricting the ability of users to project to larger audiences.

 Hi,

I’ve seen this with HD movies purchased from iTunes. There are threads on
the Internet talking about it that I browsed sometime during last Fall.
Supposedly, if you view the SD version instead of the HD version,, iTunes
will allow many of the projectors to show the content. All Movie/TV
purchases downloaded from iTunes also include the SD (Standard Definition)
version along with the HD version. To access the SD version, navigate to
the Movie or TV show, press VO-shift-m to bring up the Contextual menu and
go to the Video Quality item. Select SD from there and see if it works.
Not promising anything, just recall reading this somewhere.

Agreed in principle, but teachers have been showing videos purchased by them or
through their schools for decades. So such restrictions, insofar as for
educational purposes, is a step backwards, not forwards.

Re: An accessible text editor for programming

2014-01-28 Thread Kayaker
Hi,

The best text accessible editor I've found is called Smultron. It is available
in the app store and I like it for all pure text editing. There are several
versions for various MacOS versions. I believe Smultron 5 is the last one for
Mountain Lion, while the latest Smultron 6 only works with Mavericks.

I personally use it for my code as well as editing text files like property,
xml or host files.

The cost of the app is $4.99 in the Mac app store for each numbered version.

Hi,

Re: A very frustrating discovery regarding playing movies downloaded from iTunes

2014-01-28 Thread Tim Kilburn
Hi,

I know what you mean and feel your frustration. I was a teacher in the
classroom up until three years ago but now manage the technology for our school
district. Just because it has been done, or is done, doesn’t necessarily mean
that it is legal or in the spirit of the law. Teachers are not known for
abiding by copyright laws, Software License Agreements and such, but, we all
know the restricted budgets of the education system so, latitude is often the
norm. It is difficult to have DRM for some users and no DRM for others so,
often the common denominator is to apply these restrictions to all.

That’s enough philosophy from me for now. The only thing I can suggest is
testing if the SD version works.

Hi,
Perhaps, but prior to streaming content, those copies were physical items

If your goal is one that would fall under the license agreement, then this

2014-01-28 Thread Agent086b
Hello,
is it possible to change the date & time on iCloud? If we send email from an
iCloud address it shows U S date & time. As I am on the other side of the world
I would like to show my time here.
Thanks for any advice.

Re: Creating Folders for iCloud Documents

Hi Tim,

Thanks for this. I wasn't sure it would work that way. Apart from the odd
behaviour on iOS, which is pretty hilarious, that method sounds perfect. Thanks
for your help.

Cheers,
Nic

I think probably if you want a better sound you might need to invest in a

Clean install

2014-01-28 Thread Terje Strømberg
Hi

A while back, in the Windows days, i read about a nerd that was thoroughly
convinced about this method:
1. Do the command + r when you hear the start up chime.
2. Shift - vo + down arrow to interact with the table.
3. Go down to disk utility and hit shift - command + up arrow to stop interact
with the table.
4. Tab once and go right to the delete and hit it.
5. Chose Mac OSX Extended Journal.
7. Chose the name MacIntosh HD as name.
8. Go right to security options, hit it and interact.
9. Go right with the slider to 62% about. Stop interact and hit the ok key.
11. Go right and hit the delete key. It will take about 5 - 20 minutes before
you can hear thear the progress indicator say 10 - 25 ours remaing. When
finished. Close the disk utility and hold down the option key when the startbup
chime. Install OSX and all you wish.

• Take a backup.

Do the steps from 1 - 12 again, but this time you install the latest obackup
with the clean install and the apps and stuff you need for the moment.

Now you can go down town and drink 4 beers and two glass of vine and listen to
some music.

Take care

Creating Recipes In Mac Gourmet Deluxe vs. iOS

2014-01-28 Thread Eileen Misrahi
Hello Folks,

To me the interface of the iOS version of Mac Gourmet is easier to navigate and
input the data correctly into the fields. I have been attempting to use Mac
Gourmet Deluxe on my Air, but I find it more confusing and not direct to input
the info for a recipe. Are there any tricks or tips others can suggest? It took
a couple of trials, but I was successful on syncing the created recipe on my
iPhone to my Mac. So, maybe this is my solution for now. I have a busy task at
hand to get the recipes into this application. However, once this is done, it
will be extremely handy in the kitchen. All suggestions on how to input the
info on the Mac side would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

Kind regards,
Eileen
