I can't get control option f8 to bring up the voice over utility no

Sometimes you have to add the "FN-key" to this combination, just keep it
in your mind.

Re: Installing Windows 7 on an MBA using the DVD drive from a Macbook Pro

2013-12-05 Thread Alex Hall
That's complicated… Why not just use Remote Disk? Enable the feature under
Sharing in your System Preferences. Put the disk into the drive, give it a
minute, and then find "remote disk" on the sidebar of your MBA's Finder. Both
machines need to be on the same wifi network, but it should work. I installed
Windows on Fusion this way, using an old Mac Mini as the drive and loading it
onto my Air. You can even download a utility to do this on a Windows machine if
you need to.

RE: MBA Help

2013-12-05 Thread Lee Jones
Dear List, thanks for the helpI have made some slight progress. setting my
function keys to software control, and setting the tab key to all controls,
although I haven't seen as much benefit as I thought I would from the latter.
My main problem now is I can't install an enhanced voice. When I first
activated voice over it seemed to be using an enhanced voice, and then when I
registered my apple ID it went back to compact, and this was before I had been
anywhere near the voice over utility. I have listened to the podcast on
applevis about installing an enhanced voice, but I can't get it to work. It is
probably something silly that I am not doing. I have been able to play the
enhanced quality voice for Karen twice, and then moved to the right both times,
the first time it said OK default dimmed, and the second time it said Ok default
implying that it could be activated, but then control option space just results
in"closing dialog" and does not launch software update as per the podcast. Can
some kind soul give me a list of every keypress after loading the vo utility to
downloding the voice, baring in mind that I have been in there and it seems to
remember where I was. When you select to change the default voice does that
mean you can only download one voice because only one can be the default?
Would it not be better to be able to download the voices you want, and then
select the default from those? At a tangent how do you wake a macbook from
sleep?

Many Thanks and apologies for Rambling Lee

Hello,

I’m a new Mac user but feel it’s worth it. What is happening here is that there
are 2 levels of function keys. By default they are hardware controls i.e.
volume and brightness. So by pressing Function key + VO + F8 will get you
there. The Function is next to the VO keys. Thus you just need to hold the
bottom left-hand 3 keys and then press F8 and let go.

Hi alex,
I'm going to take a crack at some of your questions.

For your problem with vo taking over, and also for some of the key strokes
not being recognized, you can either turn off vo while in the virtual
machine or go into the vm prefs and then find the tab called keyboard, I
think. In there, there is a check box which tells the vm to ignore all mac
osx commands. For myself, once I checked that little box, the guest
operating system acted better!

The volume issue is probably windows volume and you can either turn up your
mac or go into control panel and turn up the volume in the other OS.

keyboard/mouse control between Windows and Mac, but that does not always

keyboard commander keystrokes are grabbed, so windows-b executes my battery

Re: VMWare questions

2013-12-05 Thread Caitlyn and Maggie
Well, that’s the kicker.. Sometimes I can command tab back into mavericks and
sometimes it doesn’t work.

I’m having a devil of a time with my vmware right now.. nothing is working
since I had to redo things. neither my xp machine nor my win 7 one are
functional for any real use yet, unfortunately.
Sorry.. was just saying what had worked in the past.

Re: Installing Windows 7 on an MBA using the DVD drive from a Macbook Pro

2013-12-05 Thread Chris H
This sounds awesome! So what can I do with Remote Disc? I only have one
Mac a Macbook Pro but I do have a Pc here. Any ideas greatly
appreciated. Thanks!

On 05/12/2013 15:11, Alex Hall wrote:

That's complicated… Why not just use Remote Disk? Enable the feature under Sharing in
your System Preferences. Put the disk into the drive, give it a minute, and then find
"remote disk" on the sidebar of your MBA's Finder. Both machines need to be on
the same wifi network, but it should work. I installed Windows on Fusion this way, using
an old Mac Mini as the drive and loading it onto my Air. You can even download a utility
to do this on a Windows machine if you need to.

First of all you gotta make an image outta your dvddrive, we will use
your mac with a dvddrive for this. Open a terminal under utilities.
and here is where it gets a little complex.
type "mount" it will look a little like this

sandras-MacBook-Air:MacOS sandra$ mount
/dev/disk0s2 on / (hfs, local, journaled)
devfs on /dev (devfs, local, nobrowse)
map -hosts on /net (autofs, nosuid, automounted, nobrowse)
map auto_home on /home (autofs, automounted, nobrowse)
sandras-MacBook-Air:MacOS sandra$
okay, since i don't have a cd-rom drive on the mba it is not being
shown, but if you can lay the dvd in your mac, and type mount i can
tell you which drive too use.
Anyways, after you have found the right drive you will type something like this
dd if=dev/dvd/path/ of=/place/for/the/new.iso
your drive will start up, and run for a few minutes, after that is
outta the way, you have your brand new image where you placed it , lay
it on an usb or something like that.
If you are using vmware you should be fine from here. If that aint
working out just write again
:)

Is this possible? I don’t have a portable external DVD drive. Seems as
though I recall hearing it is possible somewhere.

Thanks in advance for any help!

reading braille files

2013-12-05 Thread Chris Moore
Hello list,
Is there a way to read braille files other than textedit? I’m always leery
about making inadvertent changes to a file.

Another issue with reading braille files is having dots 7 and 8 raised on every
cell. As a workaround, I turned off “use dots 7 and 8 for cursor”. I actually
assign this command to 1-4-space.

Getting Started with True Crypt

2013-12-05 Thread Traci Duncan
Hi all,

I’m a newbie to True Crypt and I have a couple Mac questions with it.

1. In the security set up, where I move the mouse around for greater security,
how do I accomplish this on the Mac w/VoiceOver?

2. Can I mount my volume when True Crypt isn’t running? Say for example my
volume was y:/Safe Spot, could I hit command-shift-G and go to that folder?

Any further tips are welcome.

Thanks,
Traci

Hi.

Today abbyy has released a pro version of finereader for mac. You can buy it on
app store, and the finereader express has been removed as it looks to me. Is it
a free upgrade or? I do not have an express version, but I will probably buy
the new pro version.

Best regards Annie.

which premium english voices do you recommend is the best for hearing in pared users?

2013-12-05 Thread Daniel McGee
Hi all, 1st off, I relies that this is going to be a subjective question but am
looking for opinions/recommendations on which you think is the best english
premium voices in Mavericks and ios7 for hearing in pared users.

Currently, I am trying out the voices that one gets with the iOS devices and
know that there are more to choose from in Mavericks but the idea is that I
want to get comfortable with a particular voice and then I can take across iOS
and osx a like and even on that other OS that I won’t mention here but you get
the idea.

The voices are:
British english - Daniel
US English - Samantha
South Aferickan english - Tessa
Irish english - Moria
and finally
 Australia english - Karen

So far, I am going between
Daniel and Tessa I like the sound of Karen but her voice is a bit strong and
hard to get use to. As for Samantha’s voice, don’t even get me started on her
accent its too strong for me and most of the time I find that her voice goes in
one ear and out the other if you know what I mean. I have tried to use her but
can’t cope with her. lol

I look forward to hearing what you all have to say. Seriously, I would value
all of your opinions and if you have any good advice to give to someone trying
out new voices then I would be interested to hear it because at the moment I
feel like I’m just trying one and then switching to another and back again. If
anyone has a sort of process that would recommend in how to try and adapt to a
new TTS voice then I would be grateful if you would share it to this list in
order that I and others can hopefully learn from it.

Thank you

Daniel -

mail is broken

2013-12-05 Thread Antonio M. Guimaraes Jr.
Hello,

I upgraded to Mavericks, and I ran the mail upgrade that fixed some known
issues with Google.

I cannot rely on mail for my baby use if it continues to behave the way it is.

I am not getting messages to download properly. Before, they were downloading
up to September 5, 2012.

Then I got some messages from three or four days ago.

Now I have only one or two messages in my inbox.

If anyone has any suggestions, I will be monitoring this list from my iPhone
account.

Thanks,

Antonio

no, by all means i'm not representing the blind community or anyone. and, from
all of my message, i recall i use "i" on the message, not "we". So, is my
personal point of view, to pay for what i think is worth the money.
I'm not one that install hundrets of programs available just because they are
available, or just because they purposely build for the blind while, there are
some perfect main sstream program out there that work perfectly well.
Also, again, i use "I" in my message, not "We". it doesn't worry me what you
think of what its worth, but, at this stage, "i" simply can't justify the need
of QRead for Mac.

Hello all:
First, sorry for the of topic, but I urgently need a way to make a direct

Can anybody give me an example on how to create it?

Re: Installing Windows 7 on an MBA using the DVD drive from a Macbook Pro

2013-12-05 Thread Alex Hall
You can use it like a local disk drive for everything except music or,
possibly, DVDs with movies on them. For some reason, Apple disallows using
remote Disk to play, transfer, or otherwise manage music on CDs. I don't know
for sure, but they may apply the same limitations to movies as well. Still, you
can burn, copy, and perform other tasks; I mostly use this for installations on
the rare occasion something is on a CD.

Re: reading braille files

2013-12-05 Thread Eugenia Firth
Hi there
This doesn't solve the problem about making inadvertent changes, but believe it
or not, you can actually put a braille file in numbers. This has a great effect
which I like. It takes out the carriage returns at the Inn of the lines. It
puts little dots for spaces in the places. Like paragraph indentions, but I
find this to be pretty minor.

You can make a transformation in text edit to take out the capitalization so
that you don't have the dots seven and eight up. To do that you select all the
text go to the edit menu and go down to transformations and choose make
lowercase. This does not mess up a BRF file in so far as taking out all
capitalization because.6 is the capitals of course.

I think there is a way, and I haven't looked at it lately, that you can tell
TextEdit not to edit a file. Of course, you can make a copy of a file before
you start reading with it, so if you do happen to make changes you can just
copy the file back to your computer. That might be a good backup just in case.
Sincerely,
Gigi

Re: MBA Help

2013-12-05 Thread Tim Kilburn
Hi Lee,

It appears that Software Update no longer pops up when downloading voices. If
you press VO-space (VO means ctrl-optio) on the Default Voice pop-up then arrow
down through the list, after Customize, VO will read more voices and will say
“So and so Downloading” if a voice is being downloaded at that time. I believe
that it only downloads one voice at a time and will continue downloading voices
even when the VO Utility is not open. Once the voice has completed
downloading, you are able to choose it as your default.

When you choose Customize and navigate through the table of additional voices,
you can press VO-space to check as many voices as you wish to add to your
system. Once you’ve got all the voices checked that you want, stop interacting
with the table and navigate to the OK button then press it. As I mentioned
above, you can use that process to determine which voices are downloading and,
eventually, they should all be added to your system.

Regarding how to wake your MBA, just open the lid and it awakens. You’ll
likely need to press return or tap once on the trackpad to bring focus to the
authentication window where you can enter your password.

Re: VMWare questions

2013-12-05 Thread Caitlyn and Maggie
No, you don’t understand!
things were working fine for me under mavericks with fusion for a little while.

After a while, though, it seemed like I had to reinstall the OS because I was
having problems, but I didn’t do a clean install the first time because the
apple person I talked to while back said that wasn’t necessary. So, I redid my
OS and then I had to reinstall fusion. After I did that, my copy of xp wasn’t
acting right. IE flakes out and crashes, for example.

I have tried win 7 ultimate in hopes that it would be better but I’m having
problems with that, too. I can’t get it to recognize my super drive so I can
install window eyes. I might have to double check and make sure vm tools are
installed, though-that just came to me.

Windows is basically a big pita for me. I really wish I didn’t need it and am
actively looking for ways to just trash it altogether if i can.

Just me, though.

I hope you get your problem figured out. Fusion is very useable, once you get
it configured. it just might take you a while.

Good luck!

Re: which premium english voices do you recommend is the best for hearing in pared users?

2013-12-05 Thread Teresa Cochran
I like Daniel and Tessa as well. I have some high-frequency hearing loss, and
Karen is pleasant, but too soft for me to hear accurately what she says. I’d
really prefer more baritone voices, or even a voice similar to siri’s male one.
Having said that, I do mostly use Samantha on IOS and Alex in Mavericks. I wish
there was some way to make him available on IoS.

Re: OF topic, direct download dropbox link

2013-12-05 Thread Teresa Cochran
Put the file in your dropbox/public folder. Go to it and find the file. Once
you interact with it, go into the contextual menu and find the option that says
“copy public link”. You can then paste this link from your clipboard anywhere
you want.

RE: MBA Help

2013-12-05 Thread Lee Jones
Dear Tim thanks for the info. I activated the OK default button for Karen and
when software update didn’t come upI went back to the voice list. Abovecompact
Daniel was downloading Karen dimmed,I waited for a while but in the end the
downloading Karen option disappeared all together. When you say you can
download multiple voices using the default voice pop up and ok default button
is this not mislabelled because they can’t all be defaults?

Brailliant BI 40 For Sale

2013-12-05 Thread Desi Noller
Hi Everyone,

I am selling my Brailliant BI 40. I’m asking $2,000 for it. It is in
excellent condition! It comes with a leather case from Executive Products, and
a USB cable. It is under warranty until July. It can connect by either
Bluetooth or via USB. Battery life is up to 20 hours when using Bluetooth! It
can be charged with any standard USB charger, as well as by connecting it to
your computer! It also works beautifully with iOS devices, Macs, and PC’s!

If you’re interested, or have questions, please contact me off list at:
mailto:desiandca...@q.com

Thank you so much for your consideration! Remember, this is not a topic for
list discussion. The only reason I’m posting this here is that I know I can
reach a lot of blind folks who use iOS devices, and Macs, or who know other
people that do.

Re: finereader pro for mac.

I have the express for mac version and it is section 508 compliant, as is the
pro version (according the the website). If the pro version is as accessible as
the express version then I assume it is probably highly accessible.

Also, there is a $20 discount for upgrading from the express version, and all
ICA scanners are supported. the list of supported scanners is exhaustive.
This came out just in time for me as I was considering VueScan as a adjunct to
the express version.

Ann, could you give us all a more detailed report on the accessibility /
usability of the pro version?

Renaming a table in the new Numbers using Mavericks

2013-12-05 Thread Greg Aikens
Hi all,
I used to use the Inspector to change the names of tables in Numbers but am no
longer able to do so with Mavericks and the new version of Numbers. I see many
of the old features from the inspector in the format area, including a checkbox
that is called “Table Name,” but don’t see any way to change the table name.
When I hit Cmd+Option+I to open the inspector, Voiceover says “Show Inspector”
but my cursor isn’t put into the inspector window and I’m not sure how to get
to it.

Does anyone have any tips?

Thanks,
Greg

Re: MBA Help

2013-12-05 Thread Tim Kilburn
Hi,

Oops, sorry, maybe I said things in a confusing manner.

1. In the Speech pane of VO Utility, in the Voices tab, activate the Default
Voice pop-up.
2. Choose the Customize option.
3. Interact (VO-shift-down arrow) with the table of voices.
4. Navigate through the list pressing VO-space to check the voices you wish to
download. If the voice is already available to you, it will already say “So
and so, Checked”.
5. After you have all the voices you wish checked, stop interacting with the
table (VO-shift-up arrow) then navigate right to the OK button.
6. If you go back to the Default Voice pop-up, activate it, then arrow through
or VO-up or VO-down arrow through. The one that is presently downloading
should say “Downloading” and the ones that are in the Queue will say “Waiting”
after announcing the name.
7. Just leave your computer open and they will download. They might take
quite a while as the voices seem to come from a slower server.

As a matter of interest, I started some downloading at work this afternoon, did
some other things, closed my MBP and came home. I checked on them while
writing this message and they seem to have finished downloading. I now have
them all in my list of available voices from the Default Voices pop-up.

You may also like to note that there is a quick method of changing the voice on
the fly. Press VO-cmd-left or right arrow. As you go left or right, you’ll
hear “Intonation, Rate, Pitch, Volume and Voice” from which you can hold the
same keys down then use the up and down arrows to change things.

Later…

Side-note: I noticed that when I chose a few of these new voices, they played
for the demo but did not actually work properly for other tasks. I’ll have to
dig a little deeper to see what’s going on. Maybe it had something to do with
stopping and starting of the download process, or maybe I just need to restart
my beast.

2013-12-05 Thread Tim Kilburn
Hi,

To change the name of the Sheet, interact with the Sheet Navigator then press
VO-shift-m on the current sheet title. Choose Rename from the Contextual menu.
With respect to the Inspector, as you’ve determined, it is primarily within
the Formatter area. The Inspector is somewhat different within the new version
so hiding and showing the Inspector doesn’t perform in the same manner as in
iWork 09.

That's a useful tip about renaming sheets. Thanks! How Does one rename
different tables within the same sheet?

Popup Menus in Numbers

2013-12-05 Thread Nicholas Parsons
Hi,
I'm using the new Numbers on Mavericks. I've formatted some cells as popup
menus. These work beautifully as popup menus on my iPad. However, I can't get
the popup menus to work on my Mac. On the Mac, I can only edit the cells much
like ordinary text cells.
Does anyone know how to make the popup menu appear on the Mac?
Cheers,
Nic
