Dear List, thanks for the helpI have made some slight progress. setting my function keys to software control,and setting the tab key to all controls, although I haven't seen as much benefit as I thought I would from the latter. My main problem now is I can't install an enhanced voice. When I first activated voice over it seemed to be using an enhanced voice, and then when I registered my apple ID it went back to compact, and this was before I had been anywhere near the voice over utility. I have listened to the podcast on applevis about installing an enhanced voice,but I can't get it to work. It is probably something silly that I am not doing. I have been able to play the enhanced quality voice for Karen twice, and then moved to the right both times, the first time it said OK default dimmed,and the second time it said Ok default implying that it could be activated,but then control option space just results in"closing dialog" and does not launch software update as per the podcast. Can some kind soul give me a list of every keypress after loading the vo utility to downloding the voice,baring in mind that I have been in there and it seems to remember where I was. When you select to change the default voice does that mean you can only download one voice because only one can be the default? Would it not be better to be able to download the voices you want, and then select the default from those? At a tangent how do you wake a macbook from sleep?

What is happening here is that there are 2 levels of function keys. By default they are hardware controls i.e. volume and brightness. So by pressing Function key + VO + F8 will get you there. The Function is next to the VO keys. Thus you just need to hold the bottom left-hand 3 keys and then press F8 and let go.
